University of Delaware Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
University of Delaware admission requirements are grouped into academic thresholds, English proficiency, standardised tests and credential verification, applied consistently across the Graduate College with programme-level variations noted below.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree from a UGC-recognised institution with a minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10; competitive Computer Science, Data Science and MBA cohorts admit at 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS Academic 7.0 for most masters; MS Engineering programmes accept TOEFL 90 / IELTS 6.5; PTE Academic 68 and Duolingo English Test 120 accepted where the department confirms
- Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation of the bachelor’s transcript is required for degree recognition and is accepted directly by UD
- Additional: GRE recommended for MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Engineering; GMAT or GRE preferred for MS Business Analytics and Information Management; two letters of recommendation and a statement of purpose are mandatory
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 CBSE, ISC or state board with 75% to 90% (recommended); engineering and business tracks require Mathematics through Grade 12
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS Academic 6.5, Duolingo English Test 110 or PTE Academic 53; other accepted tests include TOEFL Essentials, Cambridge English Assessment, EIKEN, SAT English and ACT English section
- Application fee: $75 (₹7,159), waivable through EducationUSA advising centres in India for eligible applicants
Key insight: Applicants scoring TOEFL 79 to 89 or IELTS 6.0 are routed to the Accelerate-U Delaware (A-UD) pathway, which begins with one semester of English and academic support before rolling students into the full degree; this is neither a rejection nor a conditional offer but a paid bridge programme.
University of Delaware Acceptance Rate 2027
University of Delaware acceptance rate sits at 70.6% overall based on Fall 2024 admissions data, with the international cohort admitted at a slightly tighter 68.9%. UD is therefore classified as moderately selective, which favours Indian applicants who meet the recommended academic and English thresholds.
| Cycle | Overall Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2024 | 70.6% | Stable |
| Fall 2023 | 72.0% (estimated) | Slight tightening |
| Fall 2022 | 74.0% (estimated) | Downward trend since 2020 |
Programme-level acceptance rates diverge from the university average, with MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and the Lerner MBA running significantly tighter than the headline rate. Nursing is the tightest undergraduate track and Chemical Engineering the tightest for domestic engineering seats.
Reality check: A 68.9% international acceptance rate reads generous, but only if the application clears the recommended 6.5 CGPA and TOEFL 100 bar; roughly 45% of Indian applicants are rerouted to the A-UD pathway or waitlisted at Computer Science, so applicants at 5.5-6.0 CGPA should slot UD as a target school with a Rutgers-tier backup.

University of Delaware Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The main campus sits on 968 acres in Newark, Delaware, a small college town 20 minutes from Wilmington by SEPTA regional rail and about 90 minutes from Philadelphia by Amtrak. The campus is walkable end to end and served by a free UD shuttle network that links the North, Central and South academic clusters.
- Location and transport: Newark Regional Rail station adjoins campus; SEPTA and Amtrak connect to Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC and New York within three hours
- Housing: Guaranteed for all first-year undergraduates; off-campus rentals for graduates average $850 to $1,100 per month for shared accommodation
- Facilities: STAR Campus (Science, Technology and Advanced Research) hosts the College of Health Sciences and industry research labs; the Lewes coastal campus supports Oceanography and Marine Studies
- Indian community: Active Indian Graduate Student Association (IGSA) runs Diwali, Holi and Ganesh Chaturthi; roughly 700 to 900 Indian students across degree levels form the second-largest international cohort
- Career and health: Center for Global Programs and Services runs OPT and CPT workshops; Student Health Services covers routine care under the mandatory insurance plan
What Indian students say: Newark is quieter than Boston or Chicago, which pushes weekend social life onto the campus itself; the trade-off is lower rent and a shorter walk to labs, which most STEM master’s students rate as a net positive by the end of the first semester.
University of Delaware Scholarships 2027
University of Delaware scholarships for international graduate students centre on merit fellowships and assistantships administered by the Graduate College; roughly 80% of full-time graduate students receive some form of merit-based financial support, though no fund is exclusively earmarked for Indian nationals.

| Collegedunia Study Abroad | 2026: #364 of 824 | NA | NA |
[Source: QS, THE, US News, ARWU, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
UD’s strongest subject positions are in Oceanography, ranked #43 worldwide by ARWU GRAS 2025, with Chemical Engineering and Hospitality & Tourism Management both in the 51-75 global band. THE Subject Rankings 2026 place Engineering and Education Studies in the 176-200 band, and Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks UD #165 in the USA.
Key insight: The QS 2027 #575 rank keeps UD comfortably inside the eligibility band for Indian public-sector education loans and PSU employer recognition; the ARWU 201-300 band and THE 401-500 band matter more for research-track PhD applicants than for MS employability.

University of Delaware Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
University of Delaware’s career outcomes for the Class of 2024 showed roughly 92% of graduates employed, in graduate school or in service within six months of commencement, as per the UD Career Center First-Destination Survey.
- Placement rate (Class of 2024): ~92% employed or in further study within six months
- Median starting salary (bachelor’s): $60,000 (₹57.3 lakh), market median across colleges
- Median MS starting salary: $75,000 to $95,000 (₹71.6-90.7 lakh) for STEM tracks, per UD career outcomes
- Median post-MBA salary (Lerner): $95,000 to $110,000 (₹90.7-1,05 lakh), per Lerner College outcomes data
- Employer sectors: Finance, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, technology consulting, defence and aerospace, healthcare; DuPont, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, ChristianaCare, W. L. Gore and Deloitte recruit on campus each year
- Career support: UD Career Center runs H-1B sponsorship workshops; STEM designation on 40+ master’s programmes qualifies graduates for the 36-month OPT extension
Insider note: Indian MS Computer Science and MS Data Science graduates cluster in the Wilmington-Philadelphia-New York corridor within 12 months of graduation; the banking sector in Wilmington (JPMorgan Chase, Barclays, Bank of America) is UD’s single most consistent recruiter of H-1B sponsors for technology and analytics roles.
University of Delaware vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants shortlisting UD typically weigh it against three mid-Atlantic and Northeast public research peers on tuition-to-salary ratio, STEM depth and city access.
| University | QS World 2027 | Avg Annual PG Tuition & Fees | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Delaware | #575 | $22,164 (₹21.2 lakh) | Lower cost, strong Oceanography and Chemical Engineering |
| Penn State University | #92 | $40,000 (₹38.2 lakh) (estimated) | Higher QS rank and broader programme scale |
| University of Massachusetts Amherst | #260 | $36,500 (₹34.8 lakh) (estimated) | Stronger Computer Science ranking, larger tech cohort |
| Rutgers University-New Brunswick | #314 | $32,000 (₹30.5 lakh) (estimated) | New Jersey employer network, larger Indian community |
| Virginia Tech | #366 | $30,000 (₹28.6 lakh) (estimated) | Stronger engineering brand and tighter industry ties |
UD wins on absolute cost against every peer here and on cost-per-outcome for Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Oceanography master’s tracks. Applicants prioritising the QS number and a bigger Indian cohort will find Penn State, UMass Amherst or Rutgers a better fit.
The University of Delaware is the right fit for the Indian applicant who prizes a STEM-designated master’s at low tuition and needs a fundable path from CGPA 6.0 to 6.5, willing to trade a bigger-name QS rank for a $22,164 annual tuition and a median MS starting salary near $85,000. Total two-year investment of roughly ₹85.75 lakh clears the ROI test within three post-OPT years for most Computer Science, Data Science and Chemical Engineering graduates, and the STEM designation unlocks the 36-month OPT extension that a UK or Canadian alternative cannot match.
UD is not the right fit for the applicant chasing a top-100 QS name, a Boston or Bay Area location, or heavy on-campus placement for finance and consulting. That profile is better served by Penn State or, at a similar price point, UMass Amherst.
University of Delaware FAQs
Ques. Does University of Delaware require the GRE for MS programs?
Ans. GRE is recommended but not universally required for MS admission at UD. The Department of Computer and Information Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering strongly encourage GRE scores from Indian applicants for assistantship consideration. MS Business Analytics and Information Management and the Lerner MBA prefer GMAT or GRE, while several MS Engineering tracks have moved to optional. Check the specific programme page before the 15 January 2027 funding cutoff.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on the UD campus?
Ans. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on the UD campus during the academic year and full-time during official breaks. Common on-campus jobs include research and teaching assistantships, library and dining services, and IT help desk roles paying $12 to $17 per hour. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training (CPT) tied to a degree-relevant internship, which the CGPS office authorises after the first academic year.
Ques. What is the application fee for University of Delaware graduate programs?
Ans. The graduate application fee at University of Delaware is $75 (₹7,159) for the 2026-27 admission cycle, paid by credit card during the online application. Fee waivers are available for applicants from Bridge to the Doctorate, LSAMP, McNair Scholars and GEM Consortium programmes. Indian applicants routed through EducationUSA advising can request a waiver if they qualify under the financial hardship pathway, though approval is at the department’s discretion.
Ques. How long does OPT last for UD master’s graduates?
Ans. Standard OPT after any UD master’s degree lasts 12 months and starts immediately after completion of studies. STEM-designated master’s graduates from UD, which includes MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Cybersecurity, MS Business Analytics and Information Management and most MS Engineering tracks, can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, taking the total work authorisation to 36 months. USCIS requires an approved E-Verify employer for the extension.
Ques. Which STEM-designated master’s programs does University of Delaware offer?
Ans. UD’s STEM-designated master’s list covers MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Cybersecurity, MS Artificial Intelligence, MS Business Analytics and Information Management, MS Financial Services Analytics, MS Electrical and Computer Engineering, MS Mechanical Engineering, MS Chemical Engineering, MS Materials Science, MS Biomedical Engineering, MS Statistics and MS Bioinformatics. STEM status is confirmed by the CIP code on the CGPS I-20 and unlocks the 24-month OPT extension for Indian graduates seeking H-1B sponsorship.
Ques. Do Indian applicants need WES evaluation for UD applications?
Ans. UD’s Graduate College accepts a course-by-course WES evaluation of the Indian bachelor’s degree, though it is not universally mandatory at application. Most STEM and business departments prefer WES-verified transcripts before making a final admission decision, and the Lerner MBA requires it. Order the WES report at least six to eight weeks before the target deadline, since Indian university transcript verification typically takes four to five weeks even when the applicant follows the sealed-envelope route.
Ques. Does University of Delaware offer conditional admission for Indian students?
Ans. Yes. Applicants who meet all academic requirements but fall short on English proficiency (TOEFL 79 to 89 for UG or IELTS 6.0 to 6.4) are admitted to the Accelerate-U Delaware (A-UD) pathway, a one-semester bridge before the full degree begins. Graduate applicants can be routed to the English Language Institute pre-sessional programme for one or two semesters. Both routes are fee-charged and count toward F-1 status maintenance.
Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for University of Delaware students?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank and Axis Bank all fund UD master’s programmes, with SBI Global Ed-Vantage covering up to ₹1.5 crore for STEM tracks. Non-banking finance companies like Avanse, Auxilo and InCred offer collateral-free loans up to ₹75 lakh for STEM master’s at UD. Interest rates for secured loans typically sit between 8.5% and 10.5% for the 2026-27 disbursal cycle.

- Facilities like Gym, Swimming pool, Library are accessible and very big.
- To be very precise, University of Delaware is safe to come up to - very low crime rate.
Dislikes
- Mid-level expensive university with no scope for scholarship for international students.
- Less number of Indian restaurants, in comparison to other states. Food, unless you know how to cook, is a problem.
- It feels like a small town or may be village as there are limited options to enjoy within the city without a car - Only one shopping mall, not too many movie theaters or entertainment options, only 2 Indian stores.
Campus Life
- There will be events going on across the campus every day. You just have to make time for them; most of them are sponsored, so you will receive free food and some goodies like pens, caps, T-shirts, bags, etc.
- We have almost all the facilities needed, like an athletic center, Library, Gym, Swimming pool, and community groups. We also celebrate festivals on campus like Diwali, Garba, and Holi.
Fees
-
Fee Structure:
- It is credit-based. Number of credits needed to finish for a particular degree changes from course to course. One credit cost is $1028. I finished 30 credits for my degree.
- There are a few mandatory fees, like the International Service Fee (I was charged $180 per semester) and Health Insurance (differs from semester to semester, around $1500 - $1600).
- Monthly expenses differ from $500 to $1000, based on your preferred way of living (shared room/private room, etc.).

- Safe campus and surroundings
Dislikes
- Mediocre reputation
- Too relaxed peer group
- Less funded opportunities such as TA/RA within ECE Department for MS students
Campus Life
- My college has three campuses: north campus, south campus and main campus.
- The college has a library and a sports facility that includes a stadium, gym and courts to play various sports and swim. It also includes medical services facilities. I am not sure about specific campus festivals.
- There is the Diwali and Holi party that I look forward to and International coffee hour every week.
- There are also occasional events by the Indian Graduate Student Association that I attend. There are also football matches that people follow here very often.
Fees
-
$1,069 per credit (9 credits for the first 3 semesters and 3 credits for the last semester). Total of 4 semesters. So for each of the first 3 semesters, it is $11,116.64 per semester. An extra $1495.64 every semester is for health insurance, a wellness fee and a facility fee charged by the university.
-
It's charged semester-wise and based on credits.
-
I spend $1000 every month. $700 is for e-bill, rent, internet and water bill.
$300 is mostly for food and eating out. Very negligible transportation costs because a university shuttle is present and the public bus system is strong and very affordable. Just $1 to any destination per trip.

Campus Life
- Our campus organizes a lot of events for the students.
- Campus is distributed all over the city, not just one place. We have free bus facilities for the students in the regions where campus is covered.
- We have numerous sports clubs and intramurals are conducted over twice in a semester. We have a competitive gaming club and students can interact with others and play console games.
- College conducts different informational events and webinars, along with the food and drinks.
Fees
- The fee depends and varies to individual courses. The criteria credit per hour and it multiplies the number of credits you have taken in that semester.
- The additional charges are insurance and living fee depending on type of housing you have taken.
- The fees are charged semester-wise in this college.
- The monthly estimate of expenses is around 600 - 800 USD. The transportation is free near campus.

Overview
I have lived in Delaware my whole life and love it here! I love the master's speech pathology program at the University of Delaware too, you start working with clients two weeks into the program and they value experience over classroom learning.
Fees
Aside from tuition, there was also a housing/food fee if a student chose to live on campus. This fee included both housing and dining hall access. Students are also charged a health fee which gives them access to the health center and gym.
Overview
Wide range of academic programs and a fantastic marching band. It was important to be able to keep music in my life as well as academics! I was even able to minor in piano while studying neuroscience.
Fees
Both tuition and room and board were paid by the semester. Other fees included a technology fee and wellness center fee. I may be missing a couple, but they are all on the university's website.
Overview
I chose the university of Delaware due to the close location to home (3 hours) and the campus environment. I really liked how it had a college feel but also didn?t feel isolated from the world like some other colleges felt.
Fees
The tuition is fairly expensive for an out of state student. Books aren't expensive if you get them through third party websites.
