The University of Tennessee, Knoxville distinguishes itself on Oak Ridge Lab access and its ARWU top-20 subject strengths, and it offers a lower-cost non-resident Southern US public option relative to Purdue and Ohio State. Peer universities like Virginia Tech carry higher QS positions and DC-corridor recruiter density, so shortlist choice hinges on subject fit and geography.
The University of Tennessee, Knoxville fits Indian applicants targeting STEM MS pathways with a total two-year investment near INR 88 lakh (tuition plus living), a median graduate salary of USD 62,000 that anchors ROI, and STEM-designated OPT extending post-study work to 36 months on the F-1 visa. Oak Ridge Lab access and ARWU top-20 subject strength in metallurgical engineering and business administration make it a strong pick for research-oriented masters.
The university is a weaker fit for Indian applicants who need Bay Area or NYC recruiting proximity, elite QS-top-100 branding for return-to-India employers, or a large Indian graduate cohort. Virginia Tech is a realistic named alternative that carries a stronger CS ranking and Washington DC corridor recruiter density.

Campus Life
- The Knoxville campus is very large and has many departments. There are four other campuses as well. There are clubs for different activities, and there are always events happening on campus.
- The libraries are huge and very advanced, offering both physical and digital resources. The university provides R1-level research facilities. The sports culture here is also very strong.
Fees
- As PhD students, we don't have to pay the program fees. The department takes care of it.

Overview
I was eligible for in-state tuition, which was probably the big selling point. When I toured I absolutely loved it, and I got that "I belong here" feeling. I knew all along that I wanted to attend a really large SEC school.
Fees
There is tuition, room and board, transportation fee, technology fee, any textbook fees, inclusive access fees, in addition to laboratory fees, as well as maintenance fees campus-wide for each and every student.
Overview
I got a full ride for this college and my brother went there and had a great experience. The theatre department also had a Lord D theatre on campus that we got to collaborate with and participate in shows with.
Fees
There are a lot of fees obviously, but one important thing for parents to remember is that students have the option to opt in or out of student programming fees. This is where a portion of students fees go towards student events. If you opt-in you can go to events for free usually.
