University of Kentucky admissions run on separate cycles for undergraduate and graduate applicants, with a Fall intake that carries the vast majority of programs and a smaller Spring window for a subset. Freshman applicants need Class XII at 65 percent or above. Master’s applicants need a Bachelor’s with a minimum 2.75 GPA (roughly 60 percent) from a recognised Indian university.
- Next live deadline is 1 December 2026 for the Fall 2027 primary intake under Early Action.
- Base tuition for international undergraduates runs about USD 33,729 (around INR 32.29 Lakhs) per year, with a USD 60 (around INR 5,745) undergraduate application fee.
- Undergraduate floor is Class XII at 65 percent with IELTS 6.0. Master’s floor is a Bachelor’s at 2.75 GPA with IELTS 6.5.
- Institutional acceptance rate sits at roughly 94 percent, though competitive programs like MS Computer Science and the Full-Time MBA screen tighter.
Popular choices among Indian applicants include MS Computer Science (a 2-year STEM course), MS Mechanical Engineering, and the one-year Full-Time MBA at Gatton College. Indian students consistently rate the university positively for its co-op access, on-campus housing, and support through International Student and Scholar Services. Individual departments can set earlier program-specific deadlines. The Common Application for the 2026-27 cycle opened on 1 August 2026 per the platform’s own first-year students page. If a deadline falls on a weekend, UK extends it to 11:59 pm Eastern time the following Monday.
Planning note: Applying by the Early Action deadline of 1 December 2026 makes you eligible for merit scholarship consideration and the Lewis Honors College, a Regular Decision file loses both routes even if the academic record is identical.
University of Kentucky Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at UK splits by level. Freshman applicants are evaluated on Class XII results and English proficiency, with no SAT or ACT required. Graduate applicants are evaluated on their Bachelor’s GPA and, for many programs, a written personal statement. The engineering college keeps a higher financial-proof bar for the I-20.
UK Undergraduate Eligibility
- Academic floor: Class XII at 65 percent or above from a recognised Indian board (CBSE, ISC, state boards).
- Subject requirement: English/Language Arts across all four years of secondary school.
- SAT/ACT: Not required. UK is test-optional through the 2028-29 academic year for freshman admission, though engineering and scholarship review still consider a submitted score.
- Transfer floor: Minimum 2.0 undergraduate GPA (roughly 60 percent), with completed English 101 and 102 waiving the TOEFL.
UK Graduate Eligibility
- Academic floor: Bachelor’s degree from a recognised Indian university with a minimum 2.75 GPA (approximately 60 percent, or a US B-minus equivalent).
- GRE/GMAT: Required only for select programs, Agricultural Economics, Animal and Food Science, Architecture, Business Administration, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Radiation programs, and Urban Design. Institution code is 1837.
- Personal statement, CV, and one to three letters of recommendation are program-dependent, the MBA needs one letter, most MS programs need three.
English Proficiency Minimums
| Test | Undergraduate Minimum | Graduate Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 overall | 6.5 overall |
| TOEFL iBT | 71 (or 4.0 on the revised scale from 21 January 2026) | 79 (or 4.0 on the revised scale from 21 January 2026) |
| TOEFL Essentials | 7.5 | Not accepted |
| Duolingo English Test | 105 | 115 |
University of Kentucky IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Two routes exist for Indian applicants to skip the English test at UK. At graduate level, submit an attestation letter from your university’s registrar confirming English was the sole language of instruction across your Bachelor’s degree, this is the medium-of-instruction (MOI) waiver most Indian applicants use. At undergraduate level, transfer students who have completed English 101 and 102 at a US higher-education institution qualify for a TOEFL waiver. India is not on the country exemption list published by UK because Indian secondary schooling permits multiple language mediums, so the MOI attestation is the standard workaround.
University of Kentucky PG Programs and English Scores
The Graduate School at UK offers over 100 Master’s and doctoral degrees across engineering, business, sciences, and health disciplines. English score floors below are the institution-wide Graduate School minimums, and a few colleges (Nursing, Communication) set them higher. Base tuition for international graduate students runs roughly USD 20,000 to USD 30,000 per year depending on program, plus mandatory fees. See the course-wise fees breakdown for the current figures by program.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science | 2 years (STEM-designated) | Bachelor’s in CS or related with 2.75+ GPA, plus prerequisite coursework in data structures, algorithms, and OS | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| MS Mechanical Engineering | 2 years | Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or related with 2.75+ GPA | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| MS Electrical Engineering | 2 years | Bachelor’s in EE or related with 2.75+ GPA. GRE required | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| MS Finance | 1 year | Bachelor’s with 2.75+ GPA, plus prerequisite coursework in economics and accounting | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| MS Hospitality and Tourism Management | 2 years | Bachelor’s in any discipline with 2.75+ GPA | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| Master of Public Health | 2 years | Bachelor’s with 2.75+ GPA, plus prerequisite quantitative coursework | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| Master of Science in Nursing | 2 years | BSN with 3.0+ GPA and active RN licensure | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| MS Agricultural Economics | 2 years | Bachelor’s in economics, agriculture, or related with 2.75+ GPA. GRE required | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
| Master of Architecture | 2 to 3 years | Bachelor’s in any discipline (3-year track) or pre-professional architecture degree (2-year track). GRE required | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 79 |
Insider note: The MS Computer Science, MS Mechanical Engineering, and MS Electrical Engineering programs are STEM-designated, which extends OPT eligibility to 36 months after graduation instead of the standard 12. Indian applicants with post-study work as a priority typically shortlist these three first.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Kentucky Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Kentucky Gatton MBA Admissions
The Gatton College Full-Time MBA is a 12-month residential program that starts in late May. It is the shortest MBA route at UK and the only one shaped for Indian applicants relocating to Lexington. Part-time and healthcare MBAs are open online or hybrid but structured for working US professionals, and neither issues an F-1 visa. The Full-Time MBA rounds below drive to a January 15 international deadline.
Full-Time MBA Application Rounds
| Round | Deadline (May 2027 intake) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | 15 October 2026 | Best for scholarship priority |
| Round 2 | 1 December 2026 | Standard fellowship consideration |
| Round 3 | 15 January 2027 | International applicant deadline, required for I-20 issuance |
| Round 4 | 1 March 2027 | Domestic only, I-20 timeline too tight for F-1 |
| Final Round | 18 April 2027 | Domestic and rolling |
Gatton MBA Test Policy and Interview
Applicants must submit GMAT or GRE scores or request a test waiver. A waiver is granted if you have one or more years of post-undergraduate work experience with a 3.0+ Bachelor’s GPA, a 3.5+ GPA in a business or STEM Bachelor’s, an advanced degree, or three-plus years of military service. GRE or GMAT is still required for scholarship consideration.
The interview is required for admission to the Full-Time cohort. It is invited after the file review, conducted virtually with a member of the admissions committee, and is the last step before a final decision. Indian applicants typically hear back within two weeks of the interview.
English minimums are TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5. The application fee is USD 75 (around INR 7,181), submitted through the UK Graduate School portal. A 500-word personal statement, one professional letter of recommendation, and a CV are required. See the Gatton MBA program page for cohort profile and fee detail. For a comparative view of scholarships against MBA tuition, see the funding options for Indian students.
Reality check: Round 3 on 15 January 2027 is the last realistic window for Indian applicants to secure the I-20, complete visa interviews at a US consulate, and reach Lexington for the late-May start. Missing Round 3 usually means waiting a full year.
University of Kentucky Application Process
The application flow at UK differs by level. Undergraduates use the UK Application or the Common Application, while graduate applicants use the UK Graduate School portal. Both paths are online end to end, and neither requires you to mail physical documents at the application stage.
- Create an account. Freshmen open a Common App account or a UK Application account (both accepted equally). The Common App for the 2026-27 cycle opened on 1 August 2026. Graduate applicants create a UK Graduate School account at apply.gradschool.uky.edu.
- Choose your program and intake. Select Fall or Spring, and the specific major or department. Graduate applicants must pick the exact program before uploading documents.
- Upload transcripts and test scores. Attach unofficial Class XII marksheets or Bachelor’s transcripts for the initial review. IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo scores can be sent directly by the testing body.
- Submit the essay, CV, and recommendation letters. Freshmen submit the Common App personal essay. Graduate applicants upload the program-specific personal statement, CV, and one to three recommendation letters via the portal.
- Pay the application fee. Pay the USD 60 (around INR 5,745) undergraduate application fee on the UK Application portal, or the USD 75 (around INR 7,181) graduate application fee on the Graduate School portal. Payment is by international credit card or wire transfer.
- Wait for the admissions decision, then submit the I-20 financial documents once admitted.
University of Kentucky Admission Decisions Timeline
Decision speed at UK depends on level and application track. Freshman decisions are quicker than graduate, and MBA decisions are gated by the interview round. Once admitted, the acceptance deposit locks your seat and unlocks the I-20 for the F-1 visa process.
- Freshman Early Action: Decision typically issued by mid-January 2027 for a 1 December 2026 submission.
- Freshman Regular Decision: Decisions rolling from mid-February 2027, with the enrollment deposit due by 1 May 2027.
- Graduate Master’s and PhD: Decision timing varies by department, generally 4 to 8 weeks after the program’s own deadline. Fall 2027 applicants who file by 15 April 2027 typically hear back by June.
- Full-Time MBA: Interview invitation within 3 weeks of the round deadline, final decision within 2 weeks of the interview.
- Deferral: Admitted undergraduates may request a one-term deferral by contacting the Office of Admissions in writing.
Documents Required for University of Kentucky
The document bundle at UK is standardised across programs, with a handful of extras for graduate applicants. Prepare digital copies in PDF before you start the online application to avoid last-minute scanning delays. Financial documents are only submitted after the admissions decision.
- Valid passport bio-page scan (at least six months of validity beyond the intended start date).
- Official transcripts and marksheets, Class XII for freshmen, all Bachelor’s semesters for graduate applicants.
- Degree certificate or provisional certificate for graduate applicants.
- Official English proficiency score report (IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo).
- Statement of Purpose or personal statement, 500 words for the MBA, longer for research Master’s and PhD.
- Curriculum vitae or resume, required for all graduate applications.
- Letters of recommendation, one for the MBA, three for most MS programs, submitted directly by referees via the portal.
- GRE or GMAT score report, only for programs that require it (see Eligibility section).
- Bank statement showing USD 47,000 for undergraduates or USD 49,200 for engineering graduates, plus the Sponsor Guarantee Form, submitted post-admission for I-20 issuance.
University of Kentucky Acceptance Rate
The University of Kentucky operates an access-oriented admissions model, which means it admits most applicants who meet its stated academic thresholds. The institutional acceptance rate sits at approximately 94 percent, one of the higher rates among R1 research universities in the United States. This does not translate uniformly across every program.
UK Acceptance Rate by Program Type
Freshman admission at 94 percent is largely formulaic, meeting the Class XII 65 percent threshold with English proficiency is enough for most majors. Nursing (BSN direct admission) and engineering scholarship pools are more selective, with cohort GPAs and SAT scores well above the general applicant pool. Graduate program selectivity varies dramatically by department: MS Computer Science admits roughly 30 to 40 percent of qualified applicants because seat count is capped, while less-saturated Master’s programs run closer to the institutional average.
What This Means for Indian Applicants
The high overall rate is genuinely helpful, Indian applicants with Class XII at 70 percent-plus and IELTS 6.5-plus have realistic odds at most undergraduate majors. The lever that matters is Early Action submission, which unlocks Lewis Honors College review and merit scholarships. Applying Regular Decision closes those doors even if the file is identical. For a sense of where UK sits globally, see its ranking band.
Insider note: A high acceptance rate reflects self-selection, applicants who apply to UK have usually done research on their fit. It should not be read as "everyone gets in with 55 percent Class XII", the 65 percent floor is a hard rule enforced by International Admissions.
USA F-1 Student Visa for University of Kentucky Applicants
Every Indian student joining UK on a full-time degree needs an F-1 student visa, issued after the university generates the I-20 form and the applicant clears a US consular interview. The F-1 visa is only issued for full-time on-campus study, and part-time online programs at UK do not qualify.
Start the visa process the same week you receive the I-20 by paying the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,513) and the DS-160 fee of USD 185 (around INR 17,714). Schedule the F-1 interview at a US consulate in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, or Hyderabad, Hyderabad and Chennai see the highest student visa volumes and typically offer the fastest slots. Carry your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, passport, admission letter, financial documents (bank statement showing tuition plus one year of living costs), and academic records to the interview. Post-arrival, you must register with UK’s International Student and Scholar Services within 30 days of the semester start to activate your SEVIS record.
2026 update: US consulates in India have expanded student visa interview capacity ahead of the Fall 2027 cycle. Book your slot as soon as the I-20 arrives, typically 60 to 90 days ahead of the Fall intake, because peak May-July slots fill fast.
Tips and Application Checklist for University of Kentucky
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UK across recent Fall cycles. They compress the choices that matter and the timeline that keeps you inside the I-20 window.
- Aim for Early Action, not Regular Decision. The 1 December 2026 deadline unlocks Lewis Honors and the largest merit-scholarship pool, a nearly identical Regular Decision file receives neither.
- Use the MOI attestation letter for the IELTS waiver at graduate level if your Bachelor’s was taught in English. Order the letter from your university registrar 6 weeks before the deadline.
- Start the WES transcript evaluation early if your target program requests it, turnaround runs 3 to 5 weeks and is a common bottleneck for MBA and MS Nursing files.
- Choose UK Application over Common App if you are only applying to UK, the interface is lighter and the file loads faster.
- Request transcripts and LORs 8 weeks before the deadline. Indian university registrars run slow around board-exam season, and referees need reminders.
- Book IELTS or TOEFL by early October 2026 if you plan to submit for the December Early Action round, allow 2 weeks for scores to reach UK.
- Prepare the F-1 financial documents in parallel with the application. Bank statements older than 6 months are rejected for the I-20.
- Pay the enrollment deposit by 1 May 2027 if admitted to Fall 2027, this triggers I-20 issuance and starts the F-1 clock.
Applying to the University of Kentucky is a straightforward exercise if you time the Early Action deadline, use the MOI waiver where you qualify, and clear the I-20 financial documents in parallel with your file review. Combine that discipline with a shortlist of two or three programs and the process compresses to about 12 weeks end to end.

- Tuition : The tuition was a bit higher for international students.
- Job Market : the job market in Lexington was very limited.

- Yes, i received a scholarship. The name of the scholarship is William C Parker. As i was a transfer student from another university, the only criteria was the scores from previous university.
- The award amount was 5k USD for 1 year.

- Because the campus was beautiful and it wasn’t too far from my home, it was a school that almost all of my older family relatives went to as well.
Overview
My experience here would be a very good one. I expected it to be boring since I had to follow into my relatives footsteps but I had a lot of fun. The faculty members will always be sure to keep you on your toes and push you to do your best. This university is for people who want to try different things while being pushed out of your comfort zone.
Scholarship
I received an Indian girl support scholarship that gave me around 25k in money for my studies.
Overview
I liked the program because of it's the incorporation of theatre, fine arts, and communications in the secondary English education curriculum and their masters with an initial certification program. They also had a speech team which I valued and eventually joined. Finally, they gave good scholarships to out of state students.
Scholarship
I filled out the general application which was fairly simple and gained a lot of scholarship money from that. Additionally, I have filled out the departmental application each year and have not yet received any aid from that. They do give you the chance to ask about your application which I have not personally taken advantage.
Overview
I chose the University of Kentucky because of the layout of the campus, the nice dorm rooms and the accreditation of the college of nursing. The buildings are all fairly new and well taken care of. The city is also within walking distance.
