University of Nebraska - Lincoln Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

University of Nebraska - Lincoln requires Indian applicants to clear an academic minimum, a verified English test score, and third-party credential evaluation before an offer is issued.

Postgraduate requirements:

  • Academics: Four-year Indian bachelor’s with 55% aggregate or CGPA 5.5 on a 10-point scale (recommended); competitive MS applicants typically hold 65% or above
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, or TOEFL PBT 550, with departments such as Computer Science requiring TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0
  • Credentials: WES course-by-course evaluation of Indian transcripts; documents attested if issued in regional languages
  • Standardised tests: GRE optional for most engineering MS programmes, though strong quantitative scores strengthen assistantship candidacy

Undergraduate requirements:

  • Academics: Indian Class 12 board result with 70% to 85% (recommended); minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale equivalent
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5, PTE Academic 53, or DET 105
  • SAT / ACT: Required only for the College of Architecture and College of Engineering intakes

Applicants aiming at engineering MS pathways can compare cohort profiles across MS in Computer Science universities in USA before shortlisting.

Key insight: IELTS waivers are granted only where the bachelor’s degree was delivered fully in English and the university certifies the medium; a CBSE English-medium school certificate alone is insufficient for UNL graduate departments.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln Acceptance Rate 2027

University of Nebraska - Lincoln reports an overall acceptance rate of 77%, placing it firmly in the accessible R1 research tier. Selectivity tightens sharply at the graduate engineering and business analytics level, where cohorts are capped by assistantship funding rather than by academic minimums.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202677%Stable
202578% (estimated)Stable
202478% (estimated)Stable

[Source: University of Nebraska - Lincoln Institutional Research 2026]

Undergraduate international admits with 75%+ Class 12 marks and a valid English score are rarely declined. Graduate acceptance for MS Computer Science and MS Mechanical Engineering sits well below the university average, reflecting fixed lab space and TA budgets.

Reality check: A 77% headline rate does not signal easy MS entry for Indian applicants, because competitive engineering departments filter for research fit, GRE quantitative scores, and prior coding or lab publications.

Subject strength is concentrated in agriculture (QS 2026 #46; ARWU GRAS 2025 #18), education, and psychology. ARWU GRAS 2025 places biomedical engineering, food science, and management inside the global top 100.

Key insight: A QS 801-850 band still clears the recognition threshold for Indian public-sector employers and most private banks, so the drop from 711 does not affect Indian degree recognition or education loan eligibility.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln stands out on affordability, Fall assistantship availability, and QS #46 agriculture strength, making it a defensible mid-cost pick against Purdue’s premium tuition and coastal-metro peers. See PhD universities in USA for the doctoral pathway across the same peer set.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln fits Indian students who value R1 research, low living costs, and STEM OPT eligibility over headline QS position or a coastal city address. The total investment for a two-year MS Engineering degree sits near ₹85 lakh, against a $75,000 to $95,000 median starting band that lets graduates recover cost inside three post-OPT years.

Applicants seeking a top-100 QS brand, Silicon Valley proximity, or elite cohort selectivity should look beyond Nebraska. A realistic parallel choice for Indian applicants is Iowa State University, which mirrors the land-grant profile with a similar fee and location trade-off.

University of Nebraska - Lincoln FAQs

Ques. Which MS programs at University of Nebraska - Lincoln are STEM designated?

Ans. MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Statistics, MS Mechanical Engineering, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Civil Engineering, MS Construction Engineering, MS Agronomy, and MS Business Analytics all carry STEM designation at University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Ques. How does UNL verify Indian transcripts and Class 12 documents?

Ans. Graduate applicants must submit official transcripts through WES for course-by-course evaluation, while undergraduate applicants can submit Class 12 marksheets directly through the international admissions portal. Transcripts issued in regional languages need certified English translations. Provisional degree certificates are accepted at the offer stage, with final degrees required before enrolment and I-20 issuance.
