California State University, Northridge Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
California State University, Northridge sets a uniform academic floor across most master’s programmes, with departmental additions for STEM subjects. All figures below come directly from the international graduate admissions page.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree: Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, roughly equal to 55% or CGPA 5.5 out of 10 in the Indian system
- Alternate GPA route: Minimum 2.5 in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of undergraduate study
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL Paper 550, IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE Academic 58, Duolingo 105, or Cambridge C1 Advanced 180
- Credential verification: WES or a CSUN-approved evaluator translates and evaluates Indian transcripts
Undergraduate Requirements
- Class 12: Completion of an all-India board with grades that map to a GPA of at least 2.5 (approximately 60% aggregate) (recommended)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 61 minimum for undergraduate freshmen, IELTS Academic 6.0 (recommended); verify at the international freshman page
Every test score above traces to the official international graduate admissions page. TOEFL iBT scores are shown on the legacy 0 to 120 scale as published; California State University, Northridge has not yet republished on the newer 1 to 6 band scale that ETS introduced on 21 January 2026, so submit scores in the scale printed on your report and confirm acceptance with the admissions office.
Key insight: California State University, Northridge waives the English test if you completed your bachelor’s or master’s degree in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or select Caribbean nations. An Indian English-medium degree alone does not qualify.
California State University, Northridge Acceptance Rate 2027
California State University, Northridge does not publish a single official acceptance rate for international applicants. Third-party estimates place the overall admit rate at 68% to 92% (estimated), reflecting the university’s mission as an access-focused campus in the California State University system.
| Applicant Group | Estimated Admit Rate | Context for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Overall undergraduate | 68% to 92% (estimated) | Class 12 with 60% aggregate typically clears the academic floor |
| Graduate (aggregate) | 60% to 80% (estimated) | Programme-level selectivity varies; STEM master’s are tighter |
| MS Computer Science | 25% to 40% (estimated) | Competitive; higher GPA and coding portfolio strengthen the file |
Admit rates for MS Computer Science and MS Electrical Engineering run tighter than the university average because applicant volume from India, China and Vietnam heavily exceeds seats. Non-STEM master’s such as Public Administration, Education and Communication carry higher admit odds. Deadline compliance and a clean statement of purpose weigh more heavily than the 2.5 GPA floor.
Reality check: A 2.5 GPA (55%) file clears the academic minimum, but Indian STEM applicants competitive for scholarships and assistantships usually present GPAs above 3.2 (72% or CGPA 7.2/10). Aim above the floor, not at it.

California State University, Northridge Scholarships 2027

| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |

[Source: California State University, Northridge Office of International and Exchange Student Services]
Planning note: Most scholarships require a full semester of enrolment before you apply, meaning Fall 2027 entrants target the November 2027 and April 2028 windows. Plan to self-fund Year 1 and layer scholarships plus a graduate assistantship into Year 2.

ARWU Shanghai has placed California State University, Northridge in the top 500 globally for Psychology and top 300 for Communication Studies in its 2021 subject tables. US News additionally ranks the campus #9 among top public schools in the Regional Universities West category for 2025.
Key insight: For Indian applicants, the US News regional rank matters more than the world rank. It signals employer recognition in California and USCIS acceptance for OPT and H-1B filings, which is what pays back the fee outlay.

California State University, Northridge Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
California State University, Northridge does not publish a single university-wide placement rate. Career outcomes vary sharply by college, with the Nazarian College of Business and the College of Engineering and Computer Science reporting the strongest early-career salaries.
- Median starting salary (market median): $65,000 to $75,000 per year (₹61.9 to 71.5 lakh) for MS Computer Science and MS Electrical Engineering graduates in Los Angeles, based on regional Bureau of Labor Statistics data
- Career services: The Career Center runs on-campus recruiting drives, resume workshops and a job portal integrated with Handshake
- Representative employers in California: Aerospace and tech firms in Southern California including Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Warner Bros. Discovery, Amazon and Kaiser Permanente recruit CSUN graduates; specific per-cohort recruiter lists are not officially disclosed
- Optional Practical Training: All F-1 students access 12 months of OPT after graduation; STEM master’s designated CIP codes qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of US work rights
- Alumni notes: Diane Warren (songwriter), Cheech Marin (actor) and Eileen Collins (astronaut) are among the university’s high-profile alumni
Insider note: Los Angeles is a strong graduate hire market for entertainment technology, aerospace and health analytics. Indian MS graduates land more offers by combining a CSUN degree with paid internship experience during the second year.
California State University, Northridge vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups California State University, Northridge with three California State University sister campuses that Indian applicants shortlist alongside it, matched on non-resident fees and admit selectivity.
| University | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Annual PG Non-Resident Tuition (USD) | Annual PG Tuition (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| California State University, Northridge | #413 | $21,342 | 20.3 lakh | Largest single-campus in the CSU system, LA employer base |
| San Diego State University | NA | $20,332 | 19.4 lakh | Coastal location, stronger research classification |
| San Jose State University | NA | $21,010 (estimated) | 20.0 lakh | Silicon Valley internships within commuting distance |
| California State University, Los Angeles | NA | $21,000 (estimated) | 20.0 lakh | Downtown LA campus, closer to entertainment employers |
California State University, Northridge stands apart on scale and price. It offers the widest master’s catalogue in the group and matches SDSU and SJSU on fees while sitting at a lower selectivity bar for STEM master’s applications.
The 356-acre campus and 41,319-student enrolment give access to research groups and industry-partnered courses that smaller regional campuses cannot host. This is the practical trade for applicants weighing this university against smaller CSU sisters.
California State University, Northridge fits Indian applicants who want a Southern California base, a total two-year investment near ₹42 lakh in tuition and about ₹54 lakh with living costs, and access to a Los Angeles graduate hire market that pays median salaries of $65,000 or more for STEM master’s degrees. STEM OPT eligibility extends US work rights to 36 months.
The university is a poor fit for applicants who need a top-100 world rank for corporate India recognition or a research-heavy doctoral pipeline. If either matters more than location and price, San Diego State University or a UC campus better meets the brief.
California State University, Northridge FAQs
Ques. What English tests does California State University, Northridge accept from Indian students?
Ans. California State University, Northridge accepts six English tests from Indian graduate applicants. Minimums are TOEFL iBT 80, TOEFL Paper 550, IELTS Academic 6.5, PTE Academic 58, Duolingo English Test 105 and Cambridge C1 Advanced 180. The test is waived if you completed your bachelor’s degree at an accredited US institution or in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the UK. An Indian English-medium degree does not qualify on its own.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at CSUN?
Ans. F-1 students at CSUN can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the semester and 40 hours per week during breaks. Off-campus work needs prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training after the first academic year. On-campus roles include library assistants, research assistants and tutoring positions posted through Handshake and CSUN Careers.
Ques. How does California State University, Northridge evaluate 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. California State University, Northridge accepts three-year bachelor’s degrees from universities recognised by the University Grants Commission of India on a case-by-case basis. Applicants should submit transcripts through WES for a course-by-course evaluation, which converts credits and grades to the US GPA scale. BA, BSc, BCom and BBA graduates from top Indian universities are typically eligible; three-year non-honours degrees from lesser-known institutions may need a one-year bridge programme.
Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for CSUN?
Ans. Major Indian public and private banks fund education loans for CSUN graduate programmes. SBI, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Avanse Financial Services list CSUN as a recognised institution. Unsecured loans up to ₹40 lakh are common for STEM master’s; larger loans require collateral such as property or fixed deposits. Confirm current interest rates directly with the lender before disbursement.
Ques. What is the application fee at California State University, Northridge?
Ans. The Cal State Apply application fee is $70 (₹6,672) per programme, payable at submission. The fee is non-refundable regardless of admission outcome. CSUN does not offer routine fee waivers for international applicants, though occasional partnership agreements with recruitment agencies in India carry a discount. Applicants should budget for a single application unless targeting multiple CSU campuses.
Ques. Does CSUN require GRE scores from Indian graduate applicants?
Ans. Most CSUN master’s programmes do not require GRE scores. MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Mechanical Engineering and the MBA at Nazarian College have all made the GRE and GMAT optional or waived. A strong GRE quantitative score of 160 or above still helps scholarship and assistantship applications. Confirm the requirement on each departmental page before applying.
Ques. What financial documents does California State University, Northridge need for I-20?
Ans. CSUN issues the Form I-20 only after receiving proof of funds covering the first year of study, roughly $41,740 for a graduate student living off campus. Accepted documents include an Affidavit of Financial Support signed by the sponsor, a recent bank statement dated within the last six months and an education loan sanction letter. Fixed deposit certificates and provident fund statements are usually not accepted as liquid proof.
Ques. How does conditional admission work for CSUN applicants?
Ans. CSUN offers conditional admission to academically qualified applicants who fall short only on English proficiency. Conditional admits enrol in the Intensive English Programme at the Tseng College first, then transition into their degree after passing an internal English assessment. Applicants with a GPA of 3.0 or higher but a low IELTS or TOEFL score are the primary group targeted. The conditional letter still supports the F-1 visa application.

- Its diversity and inclusivity on campus and the peaceful suburban atmosphere near the large city. Easy to get in touch with professors and few other on campus resources. Filled with students of CSUN all around the campus, every one around valley is some how connected to college.
Dislikes
- No good scholarship options. Few options which don't even cover one month grocery bill advertise it self as a scholarship. Not east to move around, had to find transportation except one or two services. Expensive than LA sometimes.
Overview
Its good until you are challenged or try to be more career focused.
Campus Life
Campus is filled up with commuting students from Monday to Thursdays 9.00 to 17.00. Other than that everything is quite lonely except for the game nights and event days, which is full of students. Outdoor trekking, bicycling, sport events are excellent things to make good friends and hangout with others.

Overview
This was the closest state school to me which made it appealing because I could save money and also attend a decent school. They had the major I wanted which made sense to me. I also liked the idea of a big school but a small program. The school has 40,000 people but my program I see the same faces in most classes.
Fees
I believe it costs around $7k a year to attend full time. I did not get any loans or scholarships to cover this. I am not international so I’m not sure, but my guess is the resources are limited due to this being a state school. Financial aid is first allocated to California residents and then whatever is left can go to others.
Overview
I currently go to CSUN as a CTVA (Film/Television) Student and I love the opportunities I get to have as a CSUN CTVA student. Compared to many film schools in SoCal. CSUN is very affordable and many of my professors do work within the Film/TV industry in Los Angeles.
Fees
Tuition is usually $16k a year. Fees range from parking passes, student health fees, and if you are a housing student. Housing fees do apply.
Overview
The program offered was the best fit for my individual needs. I liked the campus and the environment as well as the faculty and their areas of research. Lastly, the program gave me internships that would allow me to be able to gain experience as well as potentially get a job right out of college.
Fees
It is a two-year program and each year has a set number of classes to take. Therefore, there is a set tuition fee. On top of that, one must pay for housing if they do not live nearby.
