California State University, Northridge Application Deadlines
California State University, Northridge runs two intakes a year for Indian students, with Fall drawing the overwhelming share of program openings. Deadlines below come from the official CSUN international admissions page, and individual master’s programs may close earlier than the university-wide window.
California State University, Northridge’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August), when most master’s and undergraduate programs open here.
| Intake | Level | Applications Open | Final Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Graduate (Master’s) | 1 August 2026 | 15 May 2027 (documents by 15 June 2027) | USD 70 (INR 6,615) | Cal State Apply |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | Undergraduate | 1 August 2026 | 15 May 2027 (documents by 15 June 2027) | USD 70 (INR 6,615) | Cal State Apply |
| Spring 2027 | Graduate (Master’s) | 1 July 2026 | 31 October 2026 (documents by 15 November 2026) | USD 70 (INR 6,615) | Cal State Apply |
| Spring 2027 | UG Transfer | 1 July 2026 | 15 October 2026 (Closed) | USD 70 (INR 6,615) | Cal State Apply |
Several Nazarian MBA, education and engineering programs set internal deadlines two to four months before the university cycle closes. The Nazarian MBA’s international deadline for Spring 2027 was 30 September 2026, so Indian applicants should target Fall 2027 for comfortable processing.
Planning note: CSUN admits on a rolling basis once documents arrive, so submitting four to six months before the deadline usually means a decision in early 2027 for Fall admits and more time to arrange the F-1 visa interview in India.
California State University, Northridge Eligibility Requirements
CSUN uses a cumulative GPA review alongside English proficiency, with no SAT or ACT requirement for international undergraduates. The institution-wide floors apply across all nine colleges, though competitive programs such as MS Computer Science raise the GPA bar.
- UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent or higher, with Mathematics studied through Class XII for STEM majors
- PG general entry: four-year bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, which maps to around 60 percent in Indian marksheets
- Program-specific floors: MS Computer Science asks for 3.0 GPA (around 75 percent), MS Computer Engineering 2.75 (around 65 to 70 percent), most other engineering master’s hold 2.5
- MBA floor: 2.5 GPA plus GMAT or GRE, with a waiver provision for applicants carrying strong academic records or qualifying work experience
English proficiency minimums accepted for both UG and PG include:
| Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 80 (legacy scale) / 4.0 (new revised score) |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 |
| PTE Academic | 58 |
| Duolingo English Test | 105 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 180 |
CSUN English Proficiency Waiver for Indian Students
CSUN waives English proficiency testing only for applicants who hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree from an institution where English is the principal language of instruction. The list covers the US, UK nations, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and specific Caribbean nations. India is not on this list, so an English-medium Class XII or Indian bachelor’s does not qualify. Indian applicants must submit a valid IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or Cambridge score with their Cal State Apply application.
California State University, Northridge PG Programs for Indian Students
CSUN’s graduate catalogue spans engineering, business, education, communication and allied health across nine colleges. Base graduate tuition sits at USD 21,342 (INR 20.17 Lakhs) per academic year for non-residents, before campus fees and mandatory health plan. See the course-wise fees breakdown for per-programme costs.

Insider note: CSUN admits international undergraduates for both Fall and Spring intakes, but freshman seats in Film, Music and Nursing fill through separate priority deadlines in January 2027.
California State University, Northridge MBA Admissions
The David Nazarian College of Business and Economics runs the CSUN MBA as a flexible evening program designed for working professionals and full-time international students. Base MBA tuition is USD 29,046 (INR 27.45 Lakhs) per academic year for non-residents, higher than general graduate rates due to professional-fee loading.
Admission into the Nazarian MBA is a two-stage process. Applicants submit via Cal State Apply, then separately to the MBA Program Office with GMAT or GRE scores and supporting materials.
Nazarian MBA Eligibility Floor
- GPA minimum: 2.5 across the four-year bachelor’s degree
- GMAT or GRE: required at submission, with a waiver available for applicants with strong academic records or substantial managerial experience
- Work experience: not mandatory but strengthens the application, and the evening cohort averages three to five years
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80, IELTS 6.5 or PTE 58 for Indian applicants
Nazarian MBA Deadlines for Indian Applicants
CSUN sets separate international deadlines ahead of the university cycle. For Spring 2027, the international deadline was 30 September 2026 (now closed), with department applications closing on 31 October 2026. For Fall 2027, Indian applicants should aim to submit by February or March 2027 to allow F-1 visa scheduling. The university-wide Fall deadline of 15 May 2027 remains the hard cut-off.
Living and placement information for MBA students sits on the funding and scholarships page. Browse funding options for Indian students for Nazarian-specific awards.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official CSUN Nazarian MBA page for your chosen program before applying.
California State University, Northridge Application Process
Indian applicants submit a single Cal State Apply application for the chosen major and intake. CSUN opens that platform roughly one year before the intake begins. Programs with internal review (MBA, Communication Disorders, Nursing) run a parallel departmental file.
- Create a Cal State Apply account at calstate.edu/apply/international and select California State University, Northridge as the campus and your target major.
- Fill in academic history, including Class XII marks, bachelor’s transcripts with grade-to-GPA conversion, and English-test scores.
- Upload the Statement of Purpose, resume, letters of recommendation and the Affidavit of Financial Support (CSUN form).
- Pay the application fee of USD 70 (INR 6,615) via credit or debit card at submission on Cal State Apply.
- Mail or electronically send official transcripts, degree certificates (if completed) and official test scores to the CSUN Admissions office before the document deadline.
- For MBA and selected master’s programs, submit the departmental application with GMAT or GRE scores separately to the program office.
CSUN acknowledges each submission by email within 48 hours and issues a MyNorthridge Portal login once the file is created in Admissions.
California State University, Northridge Admission Decisions
CSUN reviews applications on a rolling basis once Admissions receives the full file. The timeline below reflects what Indian applicants typically experience from submission to I-20 release.
- Review window: four to eight weeks after documents arrive, with department-level programs adding another two to four weeks
- Offer letter: conditional admission letter delivered via the MyNorthridge Portal, confirming academic eligibility and listing any English or coursework conditions
- Acceptance window: Fall 2027 admits must accept by 1 May 2027 and submit the Intent to Enroll, while Spring admits by mid-December
- I-20 issuance: released after Admissions receives the Confirmation of Financial Resources and bank statement, with typical processing of two to three weeks
- Deferral policy: one-semester deferral allowed for international admits in most programs on written request before enrolment
- Visa scheduling: F-1 interview at a US consulate in India (Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad or Kolkata) once the I-20 arrives
Reality check: CSUN does not run waitlists for most master’s programs. If you miss the deadline or fall below the GPA floor, apply for the next intake rather than wait on a Fall 2027 decision reversal.
California State University, Northridge Documents Required
CSUN asks Indian applicants to submit the paperwork below alongside the Cal State Apply form. Keep certified copies ready since Admissions reserves the right to request originals before issuing the I-20.
- Passport bio-data page, scanned colour copy valid at least six months beyond intake start
- Official transcripts in the original language and certified English translations for Class XII, bachelor’s and any PG study
- Degree certificate (provisional or final) if the bachelor’s is completed at application time
- Statement of Purpose of 500 to 1,000 words tailored to the chosen major
- Two to three Letters of Recommendation from academic faculty or employers
- Resume or CV listing education, internships and work experience
- English proficiency score report sent directly from the testing agency to CSUN
- GMAT or GRE score report for the Nazarian MBA and select analytics or engineering master’s
- Affidavit of Financial Support (CSUN form) with sponsor signature
- Bank statement showing liquid funds of approximately USD 42,000 (INR 39.69 Lakhs) for one academic year of graduate study, or USD 40,000 (INR 37.80 Lakhs) for UG
- Two passport-size photographs for the I-20 and campus ID
California State University, Northridge Acceptance Rate
CSUN does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. The overall admit range is estimated at 68 to 92 percent, based on CSU-system campus admissions patterns and auto-admit practices for applicants meeting the state-system minimum. The campus admitted 751 Indian students across cohorts, including 539 at master’s level, which signals strong Indian-applicant throughput.
Which CSUN programs are competitive for Indian students?
The GPA floor shifts the acceptance picture materially. MS Computer Science asks for a 3.0 GPA and sits at the selective end, drawing more applications than seats. MS Computer Engineering (2.75 GPA) is moderately selective. MS Software Engineering, MS Engineering Management, MS Manufacturing Systems Engineering and the Nazarian MBA (all 2.5 GPA) sit in the accessible band for well-prepared Indian applicants.
How to strengthen your CSUN application
Submit two to four months before the deadline rather than at the cut-off. A clean SOP that maps your bachelor’s coursework to CSUN faculty research, plus a 7.0+ IELTS or 95+ TOEFL, lifts a borderline 2.5 GPA file into a confident admit. Program coordinators flag incomplete financial documentation as the top reason for I-20 delays, not academic weakness.
Insider note: Students with Indian B.Tech or BE degrees from AICTE-approved institutions clear CSUN’s four-year baccalaureate rule without a WES or ECE credential evaluation in most cases. CSUN accepts transcripts directly from the awarding university.
USA F-1 Student Visa for California State University, Northridge
Indian admits need the F-1 student visa, issued by the US embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. CSUN issues the Form I-20 once the admission file and financial documents are complete, and the I-20 unlocks the visa interview booking at ustraveldocs.com/in.
The F-1 process has four steps for Indian applicants. First, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,075) using the I-20 number. Second, complete the DS-160 application and pay the USD 185 (INR 17,483) visa fee. Third, book a biometric slot plus a consular interview, as current wait times in India range from four to twelve weeks. Fourth, carry the I-20, CSUN admission letter, SEVIS receipt, DS-160 confirmation, bank proof, academic transcripts and English test scores to the interview.
Post-arrival, CSUN runs mandatory international orientation and SEVIS check-in at the International and Exchange Student Center within 15 days of arrival. STEM master’s graduates (MS Computer Science, MS Computer Engineering, MS Electrical Engineering) qualify for the 24-month OPT STEM extension beyond the standard 12-month OPT, giving up to 36 months of US work authorisation. For deeper visa procedure, see the USA F-1 visa guide for Indian students.
2026 update: F-1 visa interview waivers for renewals ended in early 2025, so first-time Indian applicants must attend in person. Book the interview immediately after the I-20 arrives to clear in time for Fall 2027 orientation.
Tips for California State University, Northridge Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at California State University, Northridge over recent intakes.
- Target Fall over Spring, as most programs open only for Fall, and the Spring cycle closes by October of the prior year with limited seats.
- Lead with Class XII mathematics for any STEM major, as CSUN engineering departments screen for Math at Class XII before checking GPA.
- Convert your Indian percentage to GPA on a 4.0 scale in the Cal State Apply form. A 60 percent score typically maps to a 2.5 GPA, 75 percent to a 3.0 GPA.
- Front-load the financial affidavit, since CSUN cannot issue the I-20 until bank proof clears review, which often adds two to three weeks.
- IELTS over TOEFL is widely accepted and faster to retake in Indian metros if you miss the 6.5 band.
- Request transcripts in sealed envelopes from your Indian university registrar, since CSUN admissions prefers the issuing-institution seal over a third-party evaluation.
- Watch the OPT STEM window, and select the STEM-designated track within MS Engineering Management if the extended work authorisation matters to your post-study plan.
California State University, Northridge Admissions Checklist
The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete between research and arrival, mapped to the Fall 2027 timeline.
- 12 months before: Shortlist CSUN alongside two to three CSU peers, then register for the IELTS or TOEFL by August 2026 for Fall 2027.
- 8 months before: Request Class XII and bachelor’s transcripts from your Indian institution in sealed, attested envelopes.
- 6 months before: Draft the SOP, request LORs with four weeks lead time, and open the Cal State Apply account.
- 4 months before: Submit the Cal State Apply form, pay USD 70, and dispatch official transcripts and test scores to CSUN Admissions.
- 8 to 10 weeks after submission: Review the MyNorthridge Portal daily for the conditional admission letter and any document requests.
- On I-20 arrival: Pay the SEVIS fee, complete DS-160, and book the F-1 interview at the nearest US consulate.
- Pre-departure: Buy health insurance meeting CSU minimums, arrange on-campus or nearby Northridge housing, and complete pre-arrival SEVIS check-in on the CSUN portal.
California State University, Northridge admits Indian students for Fall and Spring on a rolling CSU review. Fall 2027 is the primary cycle and remains open through 15 May 2027 with a USD 70 application fee. Submit three to four months early for a comfortable I-20 and F-1 timeline.
California State University, Northridge Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the minimum GPA for CSUN graduate programs for Indian students?

Overview
This was the closest state school to me which made it appealing because I could save money and also attend a decent school. They had the major I wanted which made sense to me. I also liked the idea of a big school but a small program. The school has 40,000 people but my program I see the same faces in most classes.
Overview
I currently go to CSUN as a CTVA (Film/Television) Student and I love the opportunities I get to have as a CSUN CTVA student. Compared to many film schools in SoCal. CSUN is very affordable and many of my professors do work within the Film/TV industry in Los Angeles.
Scholarship
The financial aid process was easy due to the FAFSA and my classes were paid for due to the FAFSA. Scholarships were a bit difficult for me to find and to get since I had to apply and look all over for one. It got overwhelming to look for scholarships.
Overview
The program offered was the best fit for my individual needs. I liked the campus and the environment as well as the faculty and their areas of research. Lastly, the program gave me internships that would allow me to be able to gain experience as well as potentially get a job right out of college.
