Christian Brothers University is a private, Catholic, Lasallian institution in Memphis, Tennessee, founded in 1871 and ranked #37 in the US News Best Regional Universities South 2026. As per the US News 2026 edition, CBU is also ranked #13 in Best Value Schools and #12 for Best Colleges for Veterans in the South. Christian Brothers University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must clear the academic minimums, submit an English proficiency score, and provide a WES-evaluated transcript along with the financial sponsorship paperwork.
Postgraduate applicants must submit:
- Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 6.0/10 in a relevant discipline (recommended)
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 75 (writing 4.5), PTE Academic 55, or Duolingo 110 for MSEM and MSCIS; MBA and MSDS require TOEFL iBT 82 and PTE 59
- NACES credential evaluation (WES ICAP recommended), CV, statement of purpose, and passport copy
- Two-year work experience for MBA (Leadership track)
Undergraduate applicants must submit:
- Class 12 with 75% or minimum 3.0/4.0 GPA (as per the CBU international undergraduate page)
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 68, PTE Academic 50, or Duolingo 100
- SAT 990 or ACT 19 optional (only for scholarship consideration if GPA is above 3.0)
Note: The application fee is waived for international applicants, and the CBU Affidavit of Sponsorship must show a bank balance of at least USD 28,000 (INR 26.80 lakh) dated within the last four months.
Christian Brothers University Acceptance Rate 2027
The CBU acceptance rate is 52% (estimated), placing it in the moderately selective band among US regional universities. The number is derived from third-party admissions aggregation and is not published by CBU on its official page.
CBU applies a holistic review with strong weight to Class 12 or bachelor’s grades, a written statement, and demonstrated financial capacity. Indian applicants who clear the WES minimum equivalency and the English test cut usually receive an admission decision within four to six weeks.
Reality check: A 52% rate is not the same as an easy admit for international students. CBU’s I-20 team requires clean financial documentation; incomplete Affidavits of Sponsorship are the most common reason Indian offers are deferred.

Christian Brothers University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
CBU occupies a 76-acre tree-lined campus in Midtown Memphis, roughly four miles east of downtown and 15 minutes from the Memphis International Airport.
- Location and transit: MATA bus route 50 runs along East Parkway; Uber and Lyft cover downtown and the airport for USD 15 to 25
- Housing: 43% of students live on campus across five residence halls; guarantee applies to first-year freshmen
- Facilities: Plough Library, Rosa Deal fine arts studios, De La Salle Hall engineering labs, Canale Arena (NCAA Division II), and a dedicated career centre
- Indian community: International students represent more than 40 countries; South Asian Student Association hosts Diwali and Holi on campus each year
- City peers: Sits alongside University of Memphis in the same city, sharing an active internship pipeline with Memphis Fortune 500 firms
What Indian students say: Small class sizes and direct faculty access make it easier to secure a graduate assistantship. Memphis living costs are noticeably lower than California or the North-East, though the summer heat and limited transit take some adjustment.

Christian Brothers University Rankings 2027
As per the US News 2026 edition, CBU is ranked #37 in Best Regional Universities South, #13 in Best Value Schools, and #12 for Best Colleges for Veterans in the South. It does not currently appear in the QS World, THE World, or US News Best Global Universities editions.

US News additionally ranks CBU #12 in Best Colleges for Veterans (Regional South, 2026 edition), a data point relevant to Indian applicants whose employers finance US study through veteran spouse benefits.
Key insight: Regional ranking status does not disqualify CBU from Indian education loans or F-1 visa approval; the university’s US Department of Education Title IV eligibility and STEM-designated masters carry the same OPT and loan-partner recognition as national-level peers.
Christian Brothers University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
CBU reports strong post-graduation outcomes driven by Memphis’s Fortune 500 corridor and the university’s dedicated career centre serving all four schools.
- Average starting salary: USD 54,000 per year (INR 51.68 lakh) across recent graduates
- Employment within 9 months: 92% of graduates in relevant employment or further study
- Graduate programme placement rate: 97% nationally as per CBU communications
- OPT top salary for international STEM graduates: up to USD 137,000 per year (INR 1.31 crore) reported by CBU international office
- Named Memphis recruiters: FedEx, AutoZone, and International Paper hire CBU graduates each year across engineering, finance, and MIS roles
- Career support: One-on-one advising, on-campus recruiting, and STEM OPT documentation support for the 24-month extension
Insider note: The Memphis Fortune 500 corridor gives CBU a stronger local recruiting pipeline than its national ranking suggests. Indian MBA students routinely intern at FedEx or AutoZone during the second year.
Christian Brothers University vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares CBU with regional Tennessee peers and a private US benchmark, focusing on cost and access rather than global brand. Cross-country peers such as Tufts University anchor the higher-tier private-research end.
| University | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR) | Acceptance Rate | One-line differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian Brothers University | USD 21,900 / INR 20.96 lakh (30-credit MBA) | 52% (estimated) | Small Lasallian Catholic; Memphis employer pipeline |
| University of Memphis | USD 16,452 / INR 15.74 lakh | 95% (estimated) | R1 public research; scale and lower tuition |
| University of Tennessee Knoxville | Verify at UT Knoxville fee schedule | 44% (estimated) | R1 flagship state university; broader research spend |
| Tufts University | USD 68,000+ / INR 65.08 lakh (market median) | 10% (estimated) | Highly selective private research; global brand |
CBU stands out on delivered cost-per-credit and a personal Lasallian teaching model that mid-tier public peers cannot match in class size. Indian applicants who want a private US experience without the USD 60,000+ tuition of a top-30 private will find the value proposition compelling.
Christian Brothers University is right for Indian applicants who want a private, faith-influenced US education under USD 40,000 annual tuition, need a STEM OPT-eligible masters, and prize small class sizes with named-employer Memphis internships. The full four-year investment of roughly INR 240 lakh, weighed against an average starting salary of INR 51.68 lakh, makes CBU a workable ROI once merit scholarships and on-campus housing are used to compress net cost.
It is not the right fit for applicants who need a top-100 global brand for family or employer reasons, or who want a large city campus with subway-scale transit. Those applicants should consider the University of Memphis for public scale, or a national private such as Boston University for brand.
Christian Brothers University FAQs
Ques. What English tests does CBU accept for its graduate admissions?
Ans. CBU accepts IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Express, Duolingo English Test, and Cambridge C1 or C2 certificates for graduate international applicants. The Gadomski School of Engineering (MSEM and MSCIS) sets the floor at IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 75 with writing 4.5, PTE 55, or Duolingo 110. The MBA, MS Data Science and MS Educational Leadership programmes require higher scores: TOEFL iBT 82 or PTE 59.
Ques. Does Christian Brothers University waive its application fee for international students?
Ans. Yes. Christian Brothers University waives the application fee for all international undergraduate and graduate applicants applying via the CBU online portal or the Common Application. Indian applicants therefore pay nothing to submit the primary application. Only downstream costs such as the WES ICAP credential evaluation (roughly USD 220) and the SEVIS I-901 fee (USD 350) after acceptance apply.
Ques. What bank balance is required for the CBU I-20 issuance?
Ans. The CBU Affidavit of Sponsorship must show a minimum bank balance of USD 28,000 (approximately INR 26.80 lakh) and the statement must be dated within the last four to six months at the time of submission. This proves ability to cover the first year of tuition, fees, and living expenses in Memphis. The bank statement can come from a parent, guardian, or approved sponsor and must be translated into English if issued in a regional language.
Ques. Can Christian Brothers University students work part-time on the F-1 visa?
Ans. Yes. Enrolled F-1 students at Christian Brothers University may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the semester and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Off-campus work under Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training requires prior authorisation from the CBU International Student Services office and a written offer tied to the field of study.
Ques. Which credential evaluation services does CBU accept for Indian transcripts?
Ans. CBU requires a NACES-member evaluation for all international transcripts. World Education Services (WES) ICAP is the recommended evaluator and the most commonly used by Indian applicants. The Evaluation Company and International Education Evaluations (IEE) offer discounted rates to CBU applicants. Original Indian marksheets and provisional certificates must be sent to the evaluator directly by the issuing university, not by the applicant.
Ques. Does Christian Brothers University require the GRE for graduate applicants?
Ans. Christian Brothers University does not require the GRE for the MBA, MS Engineering Management, MS Computer Information Systems, or MS Data Science programmes. Applicants with strong bachelor’s grades and relevant work experience are evaluated on academic record, resume, and statement of purpose. Only the MS Clinical Mental Health Counseling and select doctoral tracks may ask for supplementary standardised testing on a case-by-case basis; check the programme page before applying.
Ques. Which Memphis employers hire Christian Brothers University graduates?
Ans. CBU graduates are hired by the major Memphis Fortune 500 employers, including FedEx for logistics and IT roles, AutoZone for corporate finance and MIS, and International Paper for engineering and supply chain positions. The university’s career centre runs on-campus recruiting events with these firms each semester. Regional healthcare systems such as Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and Baptist Memorial also hire from the Rosa Deal School and Nursing programmes.
Ques. How long is the CBU I-20 processing wait after acceptance?
Ans. Christian Brothers University issues the I-20 within roughly two weeks after the applicant submits a completed Affidavit of Sponsorship, passport copy, and the required bank statement. The document is couriered internationally to the address on file. Indian applicants should book their US embassy F-1 visa slot only after the I-20 arrives and the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 is paid.

- Proffesors were friendly and guided althrough my masters program very good.
- Management helped processing in all kind of USCIS application process like opt and stem opt very efficiently .
- CBU degree has helped lot of students to pursue their carrrier post masters .
Dislikes
- No dislikes about the university from my side but these are the some dislikes only few people say .
- Accreditation Probation: In late 2023, SACSCOC placed CBU on probation for financial responsibility and governance, causing student anxiety about future academics and athletics.
- Budget Cuts & Layoffs: Significant budget cuts led to faculty layoffs (around 30) and elimination of non-faculty positions, impacting morale and program availability.
Campus Life
- My college has different blocks. Our main campus is located in Memphis, Tennessee, on East Parkway Road.
- Yeah, we have a library, sports facilities, and medical services too at our university.
- I can not name them cause I don't remember the names, but I do know that the major campus festivals, clubs, and popular events are held often.
- The extracurricular activities are a lot like cultural events, etc.
Fees
- The estimated tuition fee is like 11000 for 12 months.
- And the insurance is 3500, which will be added to your monthly installments if you choose a plan.
- My monthly expenses are like 2000 to 2500$ on average for the monthly installment for university and my accommodation, and basic expenses. I used to love off-campus, not on campus. My transportation and other regular expenses were a bit high because I am a high-spending guy, actually. For an average student, 2500 $ or 3000$ monthly can cover everything here in Memphis, TN, including your university fees.
