Montclair State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Montclair State University records an acceptance rate of 87% per US News Best Colleges 2026. The figure places it among the moderately selective public research universities in New Jersey.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 edition (US News) | 87% | Stable |
| 2025 edition (US News) | 88% | Marginal decline |
The comfortable acceptance rate reflects the public-mission mandate. US News ranks Montclair State at #9 nationally for Social Mobility. Indian applicants who meet the recommended thresholds and submit on time have strong odds.
Reality check: An 87% admit rate is not automatic entry. STEM tracks such as MS Computer Science are more competitive because they carry the STEM OPT extension. Apply in the December to March window.

Montclair State University vs Peer Universities
Peer alternatives from New Jersey include: Rutgers University New Brunswick, Rowan University and Kean University. Basis is QS rank, Collegedunia Study Abroad rank and average PG tuition for the 2026-27 cycle.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad | Avg PG Fee (USD/year) | Avg PG Fee (INR lakh/year) | One-line Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Montclair State University | Not ranked | #452 of 824 | USD 20,052 | INR 19.2 lakh | Affordable public MS with 24-month STEM OPT and NYC access |
| Rutgers University New Brunswick | #215 | NA | USD 35,802 (estimated) | INR 34.3 lakh (estimated) | Flagship R1 research profile with broader recruiter base |
| Rowan University | Not ranked | NA | USD 22,050 (estimated) | INR 21.1 lakh (estimated) | Similar public price with an engineering-heavy programme mix |
| Kean University | Not ranked | NA | USD 19,140 (estimated) | INR 18.3 lakh (estimated) | Lower price point with fewer STEM-designated tracks |
Key insight: Montclair State beats Rowan and Kean on AACSB accreditation and ten STEM-designated MS tracks. It prices the full Master’s programme INR 15 lakh below Rutgers on total tuition.
Montclair State’s edge is the Feliciano MBA at AACSB tier plus ten STEM-designated Master’s tracks. The suburban campus sits 30 minutes from Manhattan. Indian applicants trade the QS-brand signal Rutgers carries against a materially lower fee bill.
Montclair State University suits Indian STEM applicants seeking the NYC job market. A two-year MS runs INR 45 lakh. That sits well within market-median USD 65,000 to USD 85,000 (INR 62 to INR 82 lakh) salaries. The universities in USA pipeline supports STEM OPT graduates.
It is not the fit for applicants chasing an R1 research brand or a QS top-300 stamp. For that objective, Rutgers University New Brunswick and NJIT are more common Indian-applicant choices, both under two hours from campus.

Overview
My girlfriend recommended it to me for their psychology program. And since it's a state college, the tuition was not as expensive compared to out of state colleges. The distance also played a role, it is not far from my home. There is even a bus that goes there from port authority in New York. Being a commuter, this played a big role into choosing this college.
Fees
They charge a small tuition fee. The exact number I'm not sure about because I have not received my final billing statement for the semester. Since I am a student from the United States, I would not know much about international applicants. I do know that there is an international students program offered by Montclair. One of my classmates is from Jamaica and he told us briefly about the program.
