Kean University Admission 2027
Kean University runs a rolling admissions cycle across Fall and Spring intakes, with the Fall (August) intake serving as the primary window for Indian applicants seeking on-campus master’s placements.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| MS Computer Science (Spring 2027) international priority deadline | October 1, 2026 | Programme begins January 2027; STEM-designated |
| Spring 2027 MBA, MS Accounting, MS Biotechnology deadline | December 1, 2026 | Rolling review; earlier submission favoured for I-20 |
| MS Computer Science (Fall 2027) international priority deadline | April 1, 2027 | Priority consideration for graduate assistantships |
| Fall 2027 undergraduate international priority deadline | April 30, 2027 | Rolling admission accepted thereafter |
| Fall 2027 MBA, MS Accounting, MS Biotechnology deadline | June 30, 2027 | Programme start late August 2027 |
Credential evaluation through a NACES-affiliated agency such as WES should begin at least 8 to 10 weeks before the target deadline. The application fee is USD 75 (INR 7,181), payable online through Kean’s application portal.
Planning note: Book the SEVIS I-901 fee payment and visa slot within 15 days of receiving the I-20 to avoid the November to December OFC rush that consistently delays Indian applicants for the Fall intake.

Kean University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Kean University admissions for Indian applicants rest on three pillars: academic transcripts, an English proficiency test, and NACES-verified credential evaluation.
Postgraduate applicants:
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55-60% or CGPA 5.5-6.0 on a 10-scale (recommended); need-based aid consideration requires GPA 3.0 equivalent to 60% or CGPA 6.0/10
- English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 79 (or paper-based 550) with a minimum total score of 4 for tests after January 21, 2026; IELTS 6.0; Duolingo English Test 105
- Credential verification: Official transcripts evaluated course-by-course by a NACES-affiliated agency such as WES, ECE or SpanTran
- Standout requirement: GRE or GMAT waivers apply for several programmes; verify at the specific programme page
Undergraduate applicants:
- Academic: Class 12 completion with 60% or higher (recommended) and a course-by-course evaluation of the transcript by a NACES agency
- English test minimums: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 105, with scores from tests taken within two years and sent directly by the testing agency
- Test-optional policy: SAT and ACT are optional; Indian applicants can apply with a strong Class 12 record alone
Key insight: The IELTS 6.0 minimum at Kean is one of the most accessible thresholds among U.S. National Universities. Applicants who studied at English-medium Indian universities can request an English proficiency waiver by submitting the medium of instruction certificate directly to Graduate Admissions.
Kean University Acceptance Rate 2027
Kean University reports an acceptance rate of 75.9% (estimated), sourced from the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard. The figure aligns with the moderately selective 70-79% band reflected in U.S. News admissions data for the 2026 cycle.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 cycle | 75.9% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 cycle | 76.9% (estimated) | Stable |
The rate is holistic across all undergraduate applicants; selective majors like Nursing, Speech Pathology and Physician Assistant Studies operate cohort limits that push effective acceptance rates far lower. Graduate admission is programme-specific and does not publish a single rate.
Reality check: A 75.9% rate makes Kean an accessible option for Indian Class 12 applicants scoring 65 to 75%. Do not read it as guaranteed entry into Nursing, MS Physician Assistant Studies or Speech-Language Pathology, where cohort caps and prerequisite coursework tighten selection significantly.

Kean University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
Kean University’s main campus sits on 240 acres at 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, New Jersey, 20 miles west of Manhattan and 15 minutes from Newark Liberty International Airport.
- Location and transport: The Union campus connects to New York Penn Station via NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line in 45 minutes, easing weekend job or internship access
- Housing: On-campus residence halls host around 2,000 students; housing is not guaranteed for international graduate students, and most secure off-campus rentals in Union and Elizabeth

What Indian students say: Indian graduate students often highlight Kean’s small class sizes and direct faculty access as a genuine advantage over larger state universities. The rail link to Manhattan is repeatedly flagged as the deciding factor for CS and finance internships.

Key insight: A U.S. News National Universities rank of #318 keeps Kean University eligible for Indian education loan lender panels at HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank and Avanse. Indian employers recognise U.S. graduate degrees regardless of numerical ranking, so this tier does not restrict Kean graduates in tech, banking or consulting hiring in India.

Kean University vs Peer Universities
Peer set below draws from New Jersey and mid-Atlantic public universities Indian applicants commonly weigh against Kean, benchmarked on QS 2027 world rank, annual PG fee and academic differentiator.
| University | QS World Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD/INR) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kean University | Not ranked | USD 16,364 / 15.67 lakh | Lowest publicly-set PG tuition in New Jersey; in-state rate for internationals |
| Montclair State University | Not ranked | USD 25,000 (estimated) / 23.94 lakh (estimated) | Broader research portfolio; higher international tuition |

Kean University stands out on affordability after the Fall 2026 in-state tuition extension, cutting master’s cost by 25 to 40% versus most New Jersey peers. Its social sciences ranks (Public Policy #179 global, Social Work #264 global per U.S. News) match or exceed several peers without QS presence.
Is Kean University Right for Indian Students?
Kean University fits Indian applicants seeking a moderately selective U.S. public university with the lowest published master’s cost in New Jersey; total two-year MS investment of USD 47,488 (INR 45.47 lakh) against a median alumni salary of USD 39,976 (INR 38.28 lakh) produces payback within three post-OPT years. The New York-Newark rail link and 36-month STEM OPT window strengthen the return further for MBA universities in USA shoppers looking beyond top-100 fees.
Kean University is not the right fit for Indian applicants targeting FAANG-tier tech placements or QS top-200 brand signalling. Applicants with those goals should benchmark against New Jersey Institute of Technology or Stony Brook University before finalising.
Kean University FAQs
Ques. How can Indian students verify transcripts for Kean University admission?
Ans. Kean University requires a course-by-course credential evaluation from a NACES-affiliated agency such as World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators or SpanTran. Indian applicants must send sealed Class 12 and bachelor’s transcripts directly to the agency, which then transmits the evaluated report to Kean’s admissions office. Start the process 8 to 10 weeks before the target deadline, since WES turnaround for Indian documents typically runs 3 to 5 weeks.
Ques. Does Kean University waive GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants?
Ans. Several Kean University master’s programmes waive GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants meeting minimum GPA and work experience thresholds. MS Computer Science, MS Accounting and the MBA Global Management track do not mandate GRE or GMAT for the 2027 cycle, though strong scores strengthen graduate assistantship consideration. Confirm the current requirement on the specific programme page before submitting the application, since waiver criteria are reviewed each cycle.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Kean?
Ans. Yes, Indian F-1 visa students at Kean can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and up to 40 hours per week during breaks. Off-campus employment requires prior authorisation through Curricular Practical Training after two academic terms, or through Optional Practical Training after graduation. On-campus roles include library assistants, research assistants and dining service positions.
Ques. Is the Kean University application fee waived for Indian applicants?
Ans. Kean University charges a USD 75 (INR 7,181) non-refundable application fee for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants. Fee waivers are limited to participants of specific U.S. recruitment programmes and are not automatically extended to Indian applicants. Payment is processed online via the Kean application portal using an international credit card, and cannot be refunded once submitted.
Ques. How does Wenzhou-Kean University compare with the Union campus for Indians?
Ans. Wenzhou-Kean University is a China-based joint venture campus offering select Kean degrees at lower tuition in a bilingual environment. Indian students seeking a U.S. degree, U.S. work experience through OPT, and access to the New York job market should apply to the Union, New Jersey campus. Wenzhou-Kean is more suited to Indian applicants prioritising China exposure or reduced fees over U.S. post-study work rights.
Ques. What financial proof do Indian F-1 applicants submit to Kean University?
Ans. Indian F-1 applicants to Kean University must submit a bank statement or bank letter covering one full year of cost of attendance, roughly USD 31,000 (INR 29.68 lakh) covering tuition and living. Acceptable sources include savings account statements from any scheduled commercial bank in India, education loan sanction letters from lenders like HDFC Credila or ICICI Bank, and third-party sponsor affidavits. Documents must be dated within six months of submission.
Ques. Does Kean University require an interview for Indian graduate admission?
Ans. Most Kean University master’s programmes do not require an interview for Indian graduate applicants and admit purely on transcripts, English scores and statement of purpose. The MS Physician Assistant Studies, MSW Social Work and MA Speech-Language Pathology programmes may request an admissions interview via video call for shortlisted candidates. Indian applicants receive the interview invitation by email typically 4 to 6 weeks after the priority deadline.
Ques. What refund policy applies if Indian students withdraw from Kean University?
Ans. Kean University refunds tuition on a graduated schedule based on the withdrawal date within the term. Full refund is available if withdrawal is completed before classes begin, dropping to 75% during week one, 50% during week two and 25% during week three. No refund is issued from week four onward. Indian students who withdraw after visa arrival must also notify the Center for International Studies to preserve F-1 status for future re-entry.
