New York University admissions welcome Indian students through the Common Application and school-specific graduate portals. Class XII at a 3.0 GPA (around 75%) meets the undergraduate floor. Postgraduate entry needs a recognised Bachelor’s degree with strong academics.

  • Next live deadline is Early Decision I on 1 November 2026 for Fall 2027 primary intake.
  • Base UG tuition is USD 68,576 (₹65.41 Lakhs) plus a USD 85 (around ₹8,175) application fee.
  • UG needs Class XII at 3.0 GPA. PG needs a Bachelor’s, both with an IELTS 7.0 floor.
  • Overall acceptance rate is 9% for the Class of 2029, making NYU highly selective.

Popular Indian-student picks include the BS at Stern (Business), BFA at Tisch (Arts) and MS Computer Science at Courant. NYU is the second-largest US host for Indian students by enrolment, and reviews highlight strong industry access from the Manhattan campus. New York University Application Deadlines for Indian Students

New York University runs three published undergraduate rounds and school-specific graduate windows for Fall 2027 entry. Indian applicants should target the earlier rounds so that visa processing, I-20 issuance and SEVIS registration all fit inside the timeline before August 2027 orientation, per the official NYU international applicants page.

NYU’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August–September) — most undergraduate and graduate programs open here. The January (Spring) intake is limited to select graduate programs and internal transfers.

New York University Eligibility Requirements for Indian Students

NYU applies a school-by-school academic bar and a university-wide English proficiency threshold. Indian qualifications (CBSE, ICSE, state boards) are accepted at face value for undergraduate entry, and Indian three-year Bachelor’s degrees from UGC-recognised institutions are accepted for most postgraduate schools, including Tandon, Steinhardt and Wagner.

  • UG general entry: Class XII at a 3.0 GPA (around 75%) or higher, per NYU’s international first-year page.
  • UG competitive schools: Class XII at 90%+ typically clears Stern, Tandon and CAS shortlists.
  • PG general entry: Bachelor’s from a UGC-recognised university with a strong CGPA (around 3.0 US equivalent).
  • PG standardised tests: GRE or GMAT where the specific program requires them, GRE waivers are common in engineering.

English proficiency is required for most Indian applicants, with school-level minimum scores as follows.

Level / School TOEFL iBT IELTS PTE Academic Duolingo
Undergraduate (all schools) 100 (5 under the new scoring) 7.0 Accepted, score set per school 125
Graduate — Tandon Engineering 90 (4.5 under the new scoring) 7.0 65 Accepted
Graduate — Stern, CAS, Wagner (typical) 100 (5 under the new scoring) 7.5 Accepted Accepted
Graduate — SPS Accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo Set per program Accepted Accepted

New York University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

NYU waives the English proficiency test if English is your first language or if you have completed your last three years of schooling entirely in English medium. Most Indian CBSE, ICSE, IB and English-medium state-board applicants qualify for this waiver on the basis of Class XII English-medium instruction. You still upload a school-issued medium of instruction letter confirming the fact.

Graduate applicants who hold a US Bachelor’s completed over four years, or any US Master’s, are similarly exempt. NYU explicitly reserves the right to request a test even after a waiver has been applied, so keep an IELTS or Duolingo slot booked as a backup until the offer is confirmed.

New York University Postgraduate Programs and Requirements

NYU’s postgraduate portfolio spans the Tandon School of Engineering, Stern School of Business, Courant Institute (Mathematics and Computer Science), Steinhardt (Education, Media, Culture), Wagner (Public Service) and the Center for Data Science. All admit for the Fall 2027 primary intake, with smaller January 2027 windows in select programs.

Postgraduate base tuition sits around USD 55,000 to USD 68,000 (₹52 to ₹65 Lakhs) per academic year depending on school, exclusive of fees and living costs.

For the full course-wise fees breakdown, see our course-wise fees breakdown. Scholarships and assistantships are managed at the school level and are separate from the admissions decision.

New York University Undergraduate Programs for Indian Students

NYU’s undergraduate schools apply the same Common Application deadlines but assess candidates against school-specific academic and portfolio bars. Stern, Tandon and CAS are the most selective, with acceptance rates under 5%; Tisch requires an artistic portfolio or audition on top of the Common App.

All undergraduate applicants pay the USD 85 (₹8,175) application fee through the Common Application. Base tuition at CAS for 2026-2027 is USD 68,576 (₹65.41 Lakhs), before fees and cost of living.

New York University Stern MBA Admissions and Deadlines

NYU Stern runs a four-round MBA calendar for the Full-time (Two-Year) programme, with parallel Focused (One-Year) MBA rounds capped at the January deadline for international applicants. Round 4 is closed to international students because it does not leave sufficient runway for F-1 visa processing.

NYU Stern MBA Application Deadlines

  • Round 1: 15 September 2026 — earliest indication of scholarship priority.
  • Round 2: 15 October 2026 — most balanced round for Indian applicants.
  • Round 3: 15 January 2027 — final round open to international applicants.
  • Round 4: 15 April 2027 — Focused MBA and domestic only.

NYU Stern MBA Eligibility and Test Policy

Stern accepts GMAT, GRE, Executive Assessment (EA), LSAT, MCAT or DAT scores; scores are valid for five years from test date. Waivers are considered for candidates with strong quantitative undergraduate records or advanced degrees.

The full-time MBA does not publish a fixed work-experience requirement, but the median incoming class has around 5 years of professional experience. The Focused (One-Year) MBA is open to applicants with 0 to 3 years of experience. The Executive MBA requires a minimum of 7 years of full-time work experience with at least 5 years in a professional or managerial role.

Every full-time MBA applicant sits an interview with the admissions committee or a Stern alumnus. Interviews are by invitation only after an initial application review, typically 4 to 6 weeks after each round’s deadline. The USD 250 (₹23,850) application fee is non-refundable and paid on submission.

Insider note: Indian MBA applicants routinely aim for GMAT 720+ or GRE 328+ to be competitive at Stern, given a shortlisted-applicant median GMAT of around 740.

New York University PhD Admissions for Indian Students

NYU offers doctoral programmes across GSAS (Graduate School of Arts and Science), Tandon, Steinhardt, Stern and the Grossman School of Medicine. Most PhD programmes admit only for the Fall 2027 intake, with applications closing between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027 depending on department.

New York University PhD Funding for Indian Students

Almost all NYU PhD offers are fully funded for the standard 5-year duration, covering tuition, an academic-year stipend (typically USD 40,000 to USD 47,000 per year, around ₹38 to ₹45 Lakhs for 2026-2027), health insurance and student fees. Stern’s PhD offers extend to summer support in most departments. Funding decisions are made alongside admission, so a separate scholarship application is not required.

New York University PhD Application Process

  1. Identify 2 to 3 faculty whose research aligns with your interests and reach out with a short pitch by October 2026.
  2. Submit the online application with statement of purpose, writing sample (Humanities/Social Sciences) or research statement (STEM), CV and three letters of recommendation.
  3. Upload GRE scores where required and pay the USD 90 (₹8,586) application fee.
  4. Wait for shortlist and interview invitations, usually issued between February and March 2027.

Reality check: Only around 5 to 10% of PhD applicants clear the shortlist at competitive NYU departments. Direct-to-PhD from a strong Indian Bachelor’s is possible in STEM but rare in Humanities.

New York University Application Process for Indian Students

The application process at NYU splits along undergraduate and graduate routes, but both run online end-to-end and require Indian applicants to plan around F-1 visa processing time. Build in at least 12 weeks between offer receipt and travel.

  1. Pick your school and programme and confirm eligibility, fees and English requirement on the official page.
  2. Register on the Common Application (undergraduate) or the school-specific graduate portal.
  3. Prepare Class XII / Bachelor’s transcripts, standardised test scores, essays, letters of recommendation and financial documentation.
  4. Book and appear for IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo unless your medium-of-instruction waiver applies.
  5. Complete the online application form, upload documents and submit essays or the personal statement.
  6. Pay the application fee of USD 85 (₹8,175) for undergraduate, USD 90 (₹8,586) for most graduate schools, or USD 250 (₹23,850) for Stern MBA through the Common App or school portal.
  7. Track application status through the applicant portal and respond promptly to interview or supplementary document requests.
  • Recommendation letters: 2 for undergraduate, 3 for graduate.
  • Essays: Common App personal essay plus NYU-specific "Why NYU" supplement.
  • Financial certification: Bank statement or affidavit covering the first year of costs.

New York University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

NYU’s overall acceptance rate was 9% for the Class of 2029, down from the low double digits a decade ago. School-level rates vary widely, and the international acceptance rate typically sits within a percentage point of the overall figure, per the detailed acceptance rate trends.

School-Level Acceptance Rates at NYU

  • Stern School of Business: under 5%, one of the most selective undergraduate business admits in the US.
  • Tandon School of Engineering: under 5% at the undergraduate level, with Master’s admits closer to 30 to 40%.
  • College of Arts and Science: around 5 to 8% for competitive undergraduate majors like Economics and Computer Science.
  • Tisch School of the Arts: around 20% overall, portfolio-driven.

What NYU Looks For in Indian Applicants?

NYU admits shortlist on the strength of Class XII or Bachelor’s grades, standardised tests, essays, extracurricular depth and demonstrated fit with the specific school. For Indian applicants, this typically means 90%+ in Class XII, a 1450+ SAT or 32+ ACT if submitted, a genuine "Why NYU" supplement, and a sharp Common App personal statement. Stern also weights leadership; Tandon weights competition or research experience.

Insider note: NYU is test-optional through Fall 2027, but 75%+ of admitted Indian applicants at Stern and Tandon submit SAT or ACT scores. Submitting a strong score materially helps.

USA F-1 Student Visa for New York University

Every Indian student admitted to NYU applies for the F-1 student visa once the I-20 form is issued by NYU’s Office of Global Services. Start the visa process the day the I-20 arrives; F-1 slots at Indian consulates fill quickly between May and July each year.

The F-1 sequence involves paying the SEVIS I-901 fee, completing the DS-160 online application, paying the visa MRV fee, and appearing for the consular interview. Total government fees come to USD 535 (around ₹51,065), made up of the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (₹33,390) and the visa MRV fee of USD 185 (₹17,649). Financial proof for the first year of cost of attendance, along with the NYU offer letter and I-20, is mandatory at the interview. Post-arrival, register with NYU’s Office of Global Services within 15 days of the programme start date to activate the SEVIS record.

2026 update: US consulates in India continue to prioritise F-1 slots for students with an August 2026 or August 2027 programme start. Book the earliest available slot after your I-20 is issued.

Tips for New York University Admissions

The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at New York University over recent Fall intakes.

  • Target Early Decision I on 1 November 2026 if NYU is your first choice — admit rates are meaningfully higher.
  • Submit SAT or ACT scores even under test-optional policy if you score 1450+ or 32+.
  • Write the "Why NYU" supplement around a specific programme, professor or New York-linked opportunity, not campus prestige.
  • For Stern, quantify leadership impact using metrics from school clubs, Olympiads or work.
  • For Tandon, showcase projects on GitHub, hackathon wins or published research.
  • Apply for the CSS Profile alongside the Common App to be eligible for NYU’s need-based aid pool.
  • Book your IELTS or Duolingo slot by August 2026 even if you expect a medium-of-instruction waiver.

New York University rewards early-decision Indian applicants with slightly better odds, but the same academic bar applies. Line up transcripts, test scores and a specific "Why NYU" narrative before the Common App opens on 1 August 2026, and target ED I for the strongest signal.

  • I got a scholarship from NYU that is $4000 per year. Generally, most of those who get admitted to NYU get this scholarship.
  • One of my friends got full funding from the Karnataka state government, where they will cover his whole tuition fee and also his living expenses. It is called Dr Ambedkar Overseas Scholarship.
  • Eligibility for this is that the student should have an income below 12 L and he should belong to the SC/ST category. The same scheme is there in the Central government as well, but it is more competitive when compared to the state scholarship.

  • Yes, I received a $2,500/semester merit scholarship.
  • Students who have a GRE above 320 have a great chance to receive the merit scholarship. To get a merit scholarship, you must apply before the priority deadline. Applying early improves your chances, so I recommend checking priority deadlines and submitting the application before time.

  • I did not receive any scholarship but my friends have. The scholarship amount varies from $5000 - $7000 for the entire course. I don't know the exact number of people who received it but many of my friends got it.
  • I think to be eligible for scholarships you should have good GRE and TOEFL scores. Maybe 120+ in GRE and 115+ in TOEFL. The name of scholarship awarded to students is called merit scholarship.

Overview

I chose this college because I wanted to upskill my copywriting skills and Humber College was the only college which offered a course that would help me do so within the budget that I had planned. Overall experience I would say has been great so far. Right from the moment I came here it has been a smooth ride. I enjoyed the courses I chose, I made good friends.

Overview

Till now it has been great. Extremely tough curriculum, but it is after all NYU. There have been many great events. Even one job fair. It is great but little too expensive. For MS students in Courant and Stern they don’t give any scholarships which is bad. Otherwise great. Good faculty, tough but good.
