New York University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

New York University sets high academic and English-proficiency thresholds across schools with school-specific standardised test requirements.

PG Requirements at New York University

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); Stern MBA and Courant target 70% or CGPA 7.0/10
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 7.0 or Duolingo 125; component minimums vary by school, verify at IELTS exam page
  • Credential verification: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation for Tandon, Steinhardt and Wagner
  • Standardised test: GMAT or GRE required for Stern MBA (median GMAT near 730); GRE waived for most Tandon MS programmes

UG Requirements at New York University

  • Academic: Class 12 with 80% to 92% (recommended); Stern seeks 90%+ with strong Math scores
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.5 or Duolingo 135; verify at NYU official admissions
  • Standardised test: SAT or ACT optional through Fall 2027; strong scores recommended for scholarship consideration

Key insight: NYU does not accept IELTS Indicator or TOEFL Home Edition for graduate admission in most schools. Indian applicants must book test-centre slots at least 10 weeks before the deadline given India-wide slot shortages.

New York University Acceptance Rate 2027

New York University maintains an overall undergraduate acceptance rate of 8% for Fall 2024, making it one of the most selective private universities in the United States. Official rate reliability is high; NYU publishes admissions data annually through its Common Data Set.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
Fall 20248%Stable
Fall 20238%Stable
Fall 202212%Tightening

[Source: NYU Common Data Set 2024-25]

Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts sit below 6% acceptance. Tandon School of Engineering admits at slightly higher rates near 25% given engineering-specific applicant pools.

Reality check: Indian applicants at NYU face a de-facto rate closer to 5-7% at Stern and CAS due to over-representation from India. Balancing Class 12 board scores with strong SAT and extracurricular depth lifts admit probability meaningfully.

New York University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

New York University sets its main campus around Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, with the Tandon engineering campus in Downtown Brooklyn. NYU has no gated central quad; academic buildings integrate directly into the New York City street grid.

  • Location and transport: Washington Square campus sits on the West 4th Street subway line, with 30-minute reach to Brooklyn Tandon; the free NYU inter-campus shuttle runs weekdays
  • Housing: NYU guarantees on-campus housing for all four undergraduate years; only first-year graduate students receive priority housing at Stuyvesant Town and Alumni Hall
  • Notable facility: The Elmer Holmes Bobst Library holds over 4 million volumes across 12 floors, open 24/7 during term
  • Indian community: NYU India Association and Tandon Indian Graduate Student Association host Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; over 3,000 Indian students study across NYU campuses

What Indian students say: Manhattan removes the need for a car and puts recruiters walking distance from lectures. Rent squeezes budgets but the internship density during term makes the premium worth it for Stern and Tandon students.

Subject-wise, NYU Stern ranks #9 globally for MBA in the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2026, and Tandon computer science ranks in the QS top 50 for Computer Science and Information Systems.

Key insight: NYU’s consistent global top-40 placement supports F-1 visa credibility at US consulates in India and satisfies Indian public-sector employer recognition (DoPT, RBI, PSUs) where "top 100 QS" listing is a hiring filter.

New York University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

New York University graduates land jobs across investment banking, consulting, tech and media, with Stern and Tandon leading placement metrics.

  • Stern MBA employment rate: 93% within three months of graduation (Stern Employment Report 2024)
  • Stern MBA median base salary: USD 175,000 (INR 152.3 lakh) with median signing bonus USD 30,000 (INR 26.1 lakh)
  • Tandon MS median starting salary: USD 130,000 (INR 113.1 lakh) for Computer Science and Financial Engineering graduates
  • Top recruiters: McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Amazon, Google, Meta and Deloitte hire consistently from Stern and Tandon
  • Careers support: Wasserman Center for Career Development and Stern Career Center run mock interviews, resume clinics and on-campus recruiting; F-1 students access 12 months OPT plus 24-month STEM extension

Insider note: Indian graduates at Stern MBA cluster into consulting and investment banking; Tandon Indian graduates place strongly at Amazon, Meta and quant hedge funds. H1B lottery timing remains the biggest post-graduation hurdle for both cohorts.

New York University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers US private research universities Indian students commonly cross-consider with NYU on QS rank, PG fees and Manhattan-area placement outcomes.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Avg Annual PG Fee (USD)Avg Annual PG Fee (INR lakh)Differentiator
New York University#3565,000 to 90,00056.6 to 78.3 lakhManhattan recruiter access; STEM-designated Tandon MS

Boston University#10865,000 to 75,000 (estimated)56.6 to 65.3 lakhLower NYC-adjacent cost; larger Indian cohort in engineering
USC#4265,000 to 80,000 (estimated)56.6 to 69.6 lakhWest Coast tech recruiter density; Viterbi engineering

[Source: QS World Rankings 2027, university websites]

NYU wins on Manhattan location and Stern MBA recruiter density; Columbia and Cornell hold rank advantages but concentrate offers in narrower verticals.

Key insight: Indian PG applicants comparing Manhattan schools should weigh Tandon’s STEM-OPT eligibility (36 months work permit) against Columbia SIPA or Cornell Tech options. Rank matters less than the school-specific recruiter list for the target function.

New York University suits Indian students prioritising a global city, English-medium instruction and STEM-OPT eligibility, with a total investment of USD 170,000 to 205,000 (INR 148 to 178 lakh) for a two-year master’s degree paying back through Stern MBA median base of USD 175,000. Manhattan recruiter access remains the strongest single advantage, backed by F-1 student visa pathways.

New York University does not suit applicants seeking low tuition or generous full-tuition scholarships; students on tight budgets should shortlist Boston University or Purdue instead, where merit awards cover a larger share of total cost.

Ques. Are education loans from Indian banks accepted at New York University?

Ans. NYU accepts education loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI Bank, SBI, Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing. The Global Services Office issues I-20 documents showing NYU cost of attendance so lenders can size the loan. Cosigner-free loans usually cap near USD 100,000 (INR 87 lakh) through Prodigy and MPOWER for Indian applicants.

Ques. What transcript verification does NYU need from Indian universities?

Ans. NYU accepts credential evaluations from World Education Services or Educational Credential Evaluators for graduate admission. Course-by-course evaluation is required for Tandon and Steinhardt; document-by-document works for Stern MBA. Undergraduate applicants send official Class 12 mark sheets through Common App or their school counsellor directly to NYU Admissions.

Ques. Does New York University offer conditional admission for Indian applicants?

Ans. NYU issues conditional admission when English proficiency scores fall short but academic profile meets the bar. Applicants join the American Language Institute for pre-sessional English at Washington Square campus, then enter their degree programme after passing exit assessment. Stern MBA and NYU Law do not offer conditional admits under any pathway.

Ques. How does NYU support dependent visa for spouses of Indian students?

Ans. F-2 visas serve spouses and children of F-1 students. Applicants submit marriage certificate, financial proof covering an additional USD 15,000 (INR 13.1 lakh) per year for spouse, and DS-160 for each dependent. F-2 dependents cannot work in the US; they may enrol part-time in academic programmes with prior consent from USCIS.

Campus Life

  • The campus life is very lively. The infrastructure is top notch with the highest of facilities available for students. From startup accelerators, to research labs, everything is covered. There are tons of extracurricular activities that takes place. NYU has more than 300 clubs on campus and we have multiple events taking place every day where we get to network and even work on our skills. For NYU we have two campuses, one in Brooklyn and the main campus is in Manhattan, we have free bus facilities to travel from any one campus to other, and have access to every university building.
  • We have libraries in both the campuses, Manhattan being the main campus has a dedicated 12 floor library building for students that remains open 24x7 and can accommodate 2500+ students at a time. So students can go there at any time to study. There are a number of sport facilities also available for students. We have access to Gym, swimming pool, and other sports facilities.

Fees

  • The tuition fees for my course is around $45,000 for one year and since it's a two year course, it's around $90,000 for the entire course. This fees can be lowered if you get scholarship from the university. Scholarships are granted to admitted students based on their profile and the form they submit to get into the university.
  • They usually offer 1 year fixed scholarship, and the same scholarship continues for the second year only if you maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3 and above at the end of the first year.

  • We have 2 campuses, one in Manhattan and another in Brooklyn. Most of our classes will be in NYU Tandon, which is located in Brooklyn. We have free shuttle services to travel between these campuses.
  • We have multiple libraries; one of them is the Dibner Library in the Tandon campus, and there are more in the Manhattan campus. We can also access public libraries using our NYU ID. We can access our college gym with ID for free and also the swimming pool and all sports facilities. We can take medical insurance from NYU which is expensive.
  • The major events are the NYU entrepreneurial festival, and we will be celebrating all Hindu festivals in the Hindu Student Union. We have an Entrepreneurial club which is in the top 8 in the US.
  • We have a very good club for Hindu students and also other religions. They will celebrate their festivals, and they will have weekly events. For example, in the Hindu student union we have weekly Darshanas where we will be performing poojas. And we will celebrate all festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, and Ganesh Chaturti. We have basketball, and one drawback is that we don't have any open stadium or court. SO it is difficult for those who want to play outdoor games.

Fees

  • The tuition fee comes to around $23000 per semester, so we will have 4 semesters in 2 years. Finally, we will be paying $92000 as the tuition fee. In addition to this, we have to take health insurance, which will cost us 960 per semester for NYU health insurance.
  • The fee should be paid semester-wise, or there is another option to pay in instalments, for which they will charge an extra few dollars.
  • I am paying a total rent of 860 for a private room, including all utilities. The cost for utilities would be around $60. Other than that, for food, travel and other things we will be spending around $300. Totally, we need 1200 minimum per month for living expenses with a private room.

  • The college has multiple campuses spread across the city, including the main campus in downtown Manhattan and Engineering campus in Brooklyn. Facilities have huge libraries, sports gyms, medical clinics, and study lounges.
  • Libraries have study pods as well for individual and group study. Popular events include the annual Tech Fest and career fairs and cultural events, including Indian Cultural events. There are many clubs like coding, cybersecurity, dance, and so on, which provide great extracurricular options to engage students.

Fees

  • Semester-wise breakdown of fees, where we need to pay for credits we take and per-credit cost was $2100. Per Semester we are expected to take 9 credits, and last semester, 3 credits.
  • Monthly expenses depend, but for me it was $1100 on an average. There are many ways to make it cheaper and most of the expense will be for your housing. For me its 780 and I am switching to 610 now so it will be cheaper.

  • NYU has multiple campuses, with the main one located in Manhattan, and additional campuses in Brooklyn and Abu Dhabi. The campus offers great facilities like a large library, sports centers, and medical services available to all students.
  • Some popular fests and events include NYU’s Strawberry Festival, Welcome Week, and the NYU Music Festival. There are also cultural and career events throughout the year. There are tons of clubs and organizations, including ones for academic interests, cultural groups, volunteer work, and career networking. Personally, I’m involved in debate, student government, and a community service club. Extracurricular activities are huge at NYU, with options to participate in sports, theater, music groups, and even entrepreneurial events like pitch competitions.

  • My college have a lot of campuses. They have quite a lot in New York, Washington DC, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi. All of the facilities are available in most of the campuses such as student lounge, basket ball court, swimming pool, library, medical center, gym etc.
  • Major campus festivals are NYU All Campus Tournaments in which various departments across NYU compete in various games to win prizes. There are a lot of clubs for extra curricular activities such as painting club, singing club and many more.

Fees

  • The fee structure is around $70000. There are 4 semesters each consisting of 9 credits. Remaining 3 credits can be divided into 1.5 each which allows you to do summer and spring internships.
  • Cost of per credit was around $2305. Insurance cost is separate which is around $3k. The fees are charged semester-wise and have to before every semester begins. I pay $800 for a private bedroom including all utilities and $200 for food and $70 for transportation.

  • NYU has basically two campuses in New York City. One in Manhattan, and the other in Brooklyn.
  • All the campuses have been equipped with the same facilities, including libraries, sports complexes, and medical services.
  • The major festivals are Tech Fest, Diwali, New incoming students Orientation, New Year party, etc.
  • They celebrate events from all races around the world. Like Holi, Diwali, Lunar New Year, Dragon Fest, etc.

Fees

  • 74000$, 2450$ for each credit, and the degree requirement is 30 credits. So, the credit * cost of each credit is the total tuition fee, which is 740000$.
  • Semester-wise, but according to credits taken in the respective semester. So, it is also not the same every semester.
  • 1000$(600 rent, 200 groceries, 200 - bills, 100 - miscellaneous). Some of my friends also spend around 1500 on monthly expenses.

Overview

I chose this college because I wanted to upskill my copywriting skills and Humber College was the only college which offered a course that would help me do so within the budget that I had planned. Overall experience I would say has been great so far. Right from the moment I came here it has been a smooth ride. I enjoyed the courses I chose, I made good friends.

Overview

Till now it has been great. Extremely tough curriculum, but it is after all NYU. There have been many great events. Even one job fair. It is great but little too expensive. For MS students in Courant and Stern they don’t give any scholarships which is bad. Otherwise great. Good faculty, tough but good.
