New York University fees for Indian students combine tuition and mandatory fees of USD 68,576 (INR 57.26 Lakhs) per year for most undergraduate programmes and USD 42,030 (INR 35.10 Lakhs) per year for the Tandon MS Computer Science, the single most Indian-applied graduate course. MS Financial Engineering at Tandon and the Stern MBA also draw large Indian cohorts, priced at Tandon’s per-credit rate of USD 2,525 (INR 2.11 Lakhs) and USD 89,524 (INR 74.75 Lakhs) per year respectively.

The September 2026 intake is closed to new applications. Your realistic entry is the January 2027 intake for select graduate programmes and undergraduate transfers, or the September 2027 intake, which is the primary Fall cycle open to all first-year undergraduate and graduate applicants across NYU schools.

  • Undergraduate (most schools): USD 68,576 (INR 57.26 Lakhs) per year in tuition and fees
  • Undergraduate (Stern Business): USD 70,464 (INR 58.84 Lakhs) per year
  • Graduate (Tandon MS CS): USD 42,030 (INR 35.10 Lakhs) per year
  • Graduate (Stern MBA): USD 89,524 (INR 74.75 Lakhs) per year
  • Tandon and Stern MS auto merit scholarship: up to USD 25,000 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) per student

Total four-year undergraduate cost at NYU reaches roughly USD 420,000 (INR 3.51 Crore) including living expenses, while a two-year Tandon MS Computer Science totals about USD 179,000 (INR 1.49 Crore).

Exchange rate used throughout: 1 USD = INR 83.50 (xe.com, day-of).

September 2027 Intake: Planning Cycle

Intake: January 2027 applications close 1 November 2026 for select graduate programmes and undergraduate transfers; September 2027 applications are open across all undergraduate and graduate schools. Applying now for September 2027 allows a 12+ month runway for F-1 visa processing and financial aid decisions.

Fee update: The 2026/27 rate of USD 68,576 (INR 57.26 Lakhs) governs undergraduate entrants starting September 2026 and January 2027; PG rates range from USD 42,030 (INR 35.10 Lakhs) at Tandon MS CS up to USD 89,524 (INR 74.75 Lakhs) at Stern MBA. September 2027 entrants pay the 2027/28 rate, historically 3-5% higher, roughly INR 2.30 Lakhs more per year.

When to pay: A non-refundable enrolment deposit of USD 500 (INR 41,750) is due within 30 days of your admission decision to secure your seat and trigger Form I-20 (the document you need for the F-1 visa); the full instalment schedule and payment methods sit in the Tuition Deposit section below.

Scholarships: Auto-considered NYU merit awards up to USD 25,000 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) are assessed with your Tandon or Stern MS application, no separate form. External Indian awards (Inlaks, JN Tata, KC Mahindra, Narotam Sekhsaria) open October 2026 to March 2027 for the September 2027 cycle.

New York University Tuition Fees by Programme

NYU prices tuition by school rather than by course, so the fee you pay depends on whether you enrol at the College of Arts and Science, Stern, Tandon, Tisch, or Steinhardt. Graduate programmes at Tandon and Steinhardt are billed per credit, which lets you finish faster or slower to control annual outflow.

New York University Undergraduate Fees: September 2026 and January 2027 Entrants

Most undergraduate programmes charge the university-wide tuition and fees rate; Stern (business) and Tisch (arts) carry a school-specific premium.

New York University Graduate Fees: September 2026 and January 2027 Entrants

The Stern MBA and Tandon engineering master’s programmes are the two heaviest Indian applicant streams. Tandon and Steinhardt bill per credit, so annual outflow scales with course load.

ProgrammeAnnual Tuition (USD)Annual Tuition (INR)
Stern MBA (Full-time, two years)USD 89,524INR 74.75 Lakhs
Tandon MS Computer Science (annual bill, standard load)USD 42,030INR 35.10 Lakhs

Note: The Tandon MS Computer Science annual figure of USD 42,030 assumes a standard full-time load. Most Indian students finish in three semesters (roughly 30 credits total) at USD 2,525 per credit, giving a two-year programme cost of approximately USD 75,750 (INR 63.28 Lakhs) in tuition alone, before living costs.

Key Insight: Undergraduate entrants for September 2026 and January 2027 are billed at the 2026/27 rate of USD 68,576 (INR 57.26 Lakhs). September 2027 entrants will move to the 2027/28 rate, likely around USD 71,300 (INR 59.54 Lakhs) if the 4% average holds, roughly INR 2.30 Lakhs more per year for the same degree over four years, that is a cumulative INR 9 Lakhs more across a full undergraduate programme.

Cost of Living in New York City for Indian Students

NYU’s official cost-of-attendance published by the Bursar puts undergraduate living expenses in Manhattan at USD 32,422 (INR 27.07 Lakhs) per academic year on a 9-month basis. Graduate students living off-campus for twelve months face indirect costs of USD 42,274 (INR 35.30 Lakhs), which excludes tuition and mandatory health insurance.

Food and Housing (on or near campus)USD 2,938INR 2.45 LakhsINR 22.08 LakhsUG figure is 9-month, PG 12-month. Sharing a Brooklyn or Jersey City apartment cuts this by 25-30%.

Source: NYU Financial Aid, Cost of Attendance 2026-27.

Note: NYU does not guarantee graduate housing. Most Indian PG students share apartments in Brooklyn (Downtown, Fort Greene), Jersey City, or Long Island City, paying USD 1,200 to USD 1,800 (INR 1.00 to INR 1.50 Lakhs) per person per month versus USD 2,500+ (INR 2.09 Lakhs+) for a Manhattan studio. Booking your first six weeks in a short-term rental before flying gives you time to inspect apartments in person and avoid a full 12-month lease you cannot break.

The USD 22 to USD 35 (INR 1,837 to INR 2,923) restaurant meal in Manhattan is the single largest lifestyle expense most Indian students underestimate. Cooking four days a week keeps your monthly food bill under USD 500 (INR 41,750) instead of USD 900 (INR 75,150), a saving of roughly USD 4,800 (INR 4.01 Lakhs) per year.

Currency Tip: Your first-semester tuition, roughly USD 34,000 (INR 28.39 Lakhs), falls due about six weeks before the September 2027 intake begins. Book a forward contract at INR 83.50 to INR 84.00 once your I-20 is issued, since a one-rupee swing on USD 34,000 equals INR 34,000 (about one month of Brooklyn rent).

Total Cost of Studying at New York University

First-year total cost for an Indian undergraduate at NYU is USD 101,533 (INR 84.78 Lakhs) including tuition, living, and one-time visa charges. A two-year Tandon MS Computer Science totals about USD 179,000 (INR 1.49 Crore) including living and health insurance.

Full four-year undergraduate cost, factoring the average 4% annual fee escalation, reaches roughly USD 420,000 (INR 3.51 Crore). A two-year Tandon MS Computer Science totals about USD 179,000 (INR 1.49 Crore) and a two-year Stern MBA reaches USD 277,000 (INR 2.31 Crore). At a loan of INR 1.50 Crore for the Tandon MS at 10.5% over 10 years, EMI works out to approximately INR 2.02 Lakhs per month; the same maths on a INR 2.30 Crore MBA loan gives about INR 3.10 Lakhs per month.

Key Insight: A Tandon MS CS applicant with a strong profile who wins the auto-considered USD 25,000 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) merit scholarship brings the two-year net cost down to approximately USD 154,000 (INR 1.29 Crore), a saving of INR 20.88 Lakhs off the sticker figure. Submit the Tandon MS CS application in the first review round (deadline 15 December 2026 for September 2027 intake) to be considered for the largest awards, since Tandon reduces merit budgets in later rounds.

New York University Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

NYU requires a non-refundable enrolment deposit of USD 500 (INR 41,750) within 30 days of your admission decision to secure your seat and trigger issuance of Form I-20 (the Certificate of Eligibility you need to book an F-1 visa interview). The deposit counts toward your first-semester tuition.

Methods of Payment for International Students

  • Flywire (NYU’s designated international payment provider): supports payment from India in INR via bank transfer, saves 2-3% versus a raw SWIFT wire, and posts to your NYU Bursar account within 3-5 business days.
  • Convera (formerly Western Union GlobalPay): alternative provider accepted by NYU; competitive rates for INR-denominated transfers.
  • SWIFT bank transfer: supported but adds INR 800 to INR 1,500 in intermediary fees and can take 5-7 business days.
  • Forex card (loaded in USD): useful for the deposit and living expenses; carry two cards from different issuers as a backup.
  • Education loan disbursement: HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, and IDFC First disburse directly to NYU via Flywire; open your loan account before the deposit deadline.

Steps to Pay Tuition Fees at New York University

  1. Accept your NYU offer via the Applicant Portal (deadline stated in your decision letter, typically 1 May 2027 for September 2027 UG entrants and 15 April 2027 for most PG programmes).
  2. Pay the USD 500 (INR 41,750) non-refundable enrolment deposit through the Applicant Portal.
  3. Receive Form I-20 from NYU Global Services (couriered to India, allow 2-3 weeks).
  4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 29,225) and book your F-1 visa appointment.
  5. Activate your NYU Albert student portal, view your tuition e-bill in the Bursar section.
  6. Pay the first-semester balance through Flywire before the semester start; NYU accepts split payments if your loan disburses in tranches.
  7. Save every payment receipt in one folder; your F-1 visa officer and your bank both ask for these later.

Instalment Schedule and Discounts

NYU’s default plan is per-semester, meaning you pay half the annual bill in August (Fall) and half in December (Spring). NYU also offers a Monthly Payment Plan through NYU Bursar for a USD 100 (INR 8,350) annual enrolment fee, spreading the semester bill over 4-5 monthly instalments. NYU does not offer a discount for lump-sum annual payment.

Source: NYU Bills, Payments and Refunds.

Note: For September 2027 entrants, the enrolment deposit typically falls due 1 May 2027 (UG) or by mid-April 2027 (most PG). Bank transfers from India can take 5-7 business days plus a day for NYU to post; initiate the transfer at least 10 days before the deposit deadline to avoid I-20 delay, which cascades into the F-1 visa timeline.

Hidden Costs of Studying at New York University

Beyond tuition and standard living costs, Indian students at NYU consistently underestimate eight line items that add USD 8,000 to USD 12,000 (INR 6.68 to INR 10.02 Lakhs) to first-year budgets.

  • F-1 visa costs (once, before travel): SEVIS I-901 fee USD 350 (INR 29,225) plus MRV visa fee USD 185 (INR 15,448), total USD 535 (INR 44,673). Budget these by June 2027 for the September 2027 intake.
  • NYU Global Services fee: USD 115 (INR 9,603) per semester for international students, funds visa advising and OPT processing, so USD 230 (INR 19,205) per academic year.
  • Mandatory health insurance (graduate): USD 5,100 (INR 4.26 Lakhs) per year; waivable only with equivalent US-based employer coverage, not with an Indian policy.
  • Initial setup (first month in NYC): Security deposit (typically 1-2 months’ rent, USD 2,000 to USD 3,600 or INR 1.67 to INR 3.01 Lakhs), furniture, bedding, utility deposits, one month of eating out before your kitchen is functional. Budget USD 3,500 (INR 2.92 Lakhs).
  • SEVIS-mandated full-time enrolment: You cannot drop below 12 credits (UG) or 9 credits (PG) without SEVIS advising; a dropped course with no waiver means re-taking at the full per-credit rate the next semester.
  • Winter clothing: Manhattan winters run to -10 degrees Celsius. Budget USD 400 (INR 33,400) for a proper down coat, waterproof boots, gloves, and thermals bought locally after arrival.
  • Return flight in emergencies: One-way NYC to India in peak season runs INR 90,000 to INR 1.40 Lakhs; keep a liquid emergency buffer rather than tying funds up in a fixed deposit.
  • NYC state and city taxes on on-campus and OPT income: Roughly 8-10% of gross deducted at source; your effective take-home from an on-campus role at USD 15 (INR 1,253) per hour is closer to USD 12 (INR 1,002) per hour.

Total budget for first-year hidden costs at NYU works out to approximately INR 8 to INR 10 Lakhs above the published cost of attendance.

Note: The single hidden cost Indian families most consistently miss is mandatory graduate health insurance at USD 5,100 (INR 4.26 Lakhs) per year. It is billed directly on your Bursar e-bill each semester and is not covered by education loans that are sanctioned strictly against your NYU offer letter’s tuition figure. Increase your loan request by at least INR 8.50 Lakhs (two years’ worth) at sanction to avoid a mid-programme shortfall.

Fee Saving Strategies for Indian Students at New York University

The five highest-value fee-reduction levers for Indian students targeting the September 2027 NYU intake, ranked by cash saved, are graduate assistantships, borough choice, credit optimisation, Section 80E of the Income Tax Act, and OPT plus STEM-OPT earnings.

  • Graduate Assistantships and RA/TA positions (Tandon, Steinhardt, GSAS): Tuition remission ranging from 50% to full, plus a stipend of USD 15,000 to USD 25,000 (INR 12.53 to INR 20.88 Lakhs) per year. Apply directly to programme coordinators within your first semester; the single highest-value saving lever at USD 25,000+ (INR 20.88 Lakhs+) per year.
  • Live in Brooklyn or Jersey City, not Manhattan: Sharing a two-bedroom in Downtown Brooklyn or Journal Square costs USD 1,200 to USD 1,500 (INR 1.00 to INR 1.25 Lakhs) per person per month versus USD 2,500+ (INR 2.09 Lakhs+) for a Manhattan studio. Annual saving: USD 12,000 to USD 18,000 (INR 10.02 to INR 15.03 Lakhs).
  • Credit-load optimisation (Tandon per-credit programmes): Complete the Tandon MS in three semesters instead of four by taking 12 credits per Fall and Spring plus a 6-credit summer, capping tuition at USD 75,750 (INR 63.28 Lakhs) instead of USD 84,000+ (INR 70.14 Lakhs+) across four semesters.
  • Section 80E deduction on education loan interest: The Indian Income Tax Act allows unlimited deduction on education loan interest for eight years from repayment start. On a INR 1.50 Crore loan, this saves approximately INR 4 to INR 6 Lakhs in total tax over the deduction period.
  • OPT and STEM OPT earnings (F-1 students): All NYU degrees qualify for 12 months of Optional Practical Training (paid work in your field) after graduation; STEM-designated degrees at Tandon and Courant (including MS CS, MS Data Science, MS Financial Engineering) qualify for a 24-month extension, giving three full years of US work income. Median NYC starting salary for these programmes runs USD 95,000 to USD 140,000 (INR 79.33 Lakhs to INR 1.17 Crore) per year, materially offsetting loan EMI within the OPT window itself.

Tip for Indian Students: The highest-value single lever for the September 2027 Tandon MS cycle is a Graduate Research Assistantship, which combines tuition remission with a stipend. Email 8-10 Tandon faculty directly (with your CV and one paragraph on why their lab) between January 2027 and March 2027, immediately after your admission decision. Assistantships are informally allocated by faculty rather than through a central portal, so early direct outreach is the deciding factor.

Is New York University Worth the Cost for Indian Students

A two-year Tandon MS Computer Science at NYU costs INR 1.49 Crore total, against a Manhattan median starting salary of USD 120,000 (INR 1.00 Crore) per year for MS CS graduates and three years of legal US work rights (12-month OPT plus 24-month STEM extension); the programme pays back within 3-4 years of graduation for most Indian graduates who convert OPT into H-1B.

NYU sits at #35 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and #26 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, with Stern ranked among the top 10 US MBA programmes in the Financial Times MBA Ranking. Tandon’s Computer Science, Data Science, and Financial Engineering programmes place graduates in every top-tier tech and quant firm operating in NYC (Google, Meta, JP Morgan, Two Sigma, Bloomberg), giving Indian graduates access to a hiring market that is second only to the San Francisco Bay Area for STEM roles.

OPT and STEM OPT policy in force on the writing date allows a total of 36 months of post-study work for STEM graduates at NYU (12-month standard OPT plus 24-month STEM extension), which materially lowers the loan-repayment risk profile compared to countries with shorter post-study windows. An INR 1.50 Crore loan at 10.5% carries an EMI of approximately INR 2.02 Lakhs per month; a Tandon MS CS graduate earning USD 10,000 (INR 8.35 Lakhs) per month gross in NYC covers this comfortably from year one of OPT.

Key Insight: The single number that makes September 2027 entry at Tandon financially sound is the median starting salary of USD 120,000 (INR 1.00 Crore) against a total programme cost of INR 1.49 Crore. Net of the auto-considered USD 25,000 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) merit scholarship, a graduate earning at median clears the loan principal within 2.5 to 3 years on OPT alone, before considering any H-1B conversion.

Budget INR 84.78 Lakhs for the first year of an NYU undergraduate degree or INR 75.10 Lakhs for the Tandon MS Computer Science, with total programme costs of INR 3.51 Crore (four-year UG), INR 1.49 Crore (two-year Tandon MS), and INR 2.31 Crore (two-year Stern MBA). Auto-considered scholarships up to USD 25,000 (INR 20.88 Lakhs) reduce the graduate net figure by roughly 14%; stacking with JN Tata’s INR 10 Lakhs brings a Tandon MS CS below INR 1.20 Crore. At the current INR 2.02 Lakh EMI on a INR 1.50 Crore loan set against a USD 120,000 (INR 1.00 Crore) NYC starting salary, the payback horizon is 3 to 4 years for STEM graduates on the 36-month OPT window. For a September 2027 target, lock the Tandon or Stern application in the first review round (deadline 15 December 2026) to be considered for the largest merit awards.

Ans. USD 500 (INR 41,750), non-refundable, due within 30 days of your admission decision. For September 2027 undergraduate entrants, the deposit typically falls due 1 May 2027; PG deadlines vary by school but usually fall in mid-April 2027. The deposit counts toward first-semester tuition and triggers issuance of Form I-20 for your F-1 visa.

Ques. What are the hidden costs at NYU that Indian students should budget for?

Ans. Budget an additional INR 8 to INR 10 Lakhs beyond published cost of attendance for F-1 visa costs (USD 535 or INR 44,673), mandatory graduate health insurance (USD 5,100 or INR 4.26 Lakhs per year), NYU Global Services fee (USD 230 or INR 19,205 per year), initial NYC setup (USD 3,500 or INR 2.92 Lakhs), and winter clothing (USD 400 or INR 33,400).

Ques. Is the NYU MBA worth it for Indian students?

Ans. Stern MBA total cost is INR 2.31 Crore against a median post-MBA salary of USD 175,000 (INR 1.46 Crore) per year based on FT Ranking data, placing Stern among the top 10 US MBA programmes. On a INR 2.30 Crore loan at 10.5% for 10 years, EMI is approximately INR 3.10 Lakhs per month, comfortably covered by a New York City post-MBA salary of INR 12 Lakhs+ per month gross.

Ques. Which is cheaper for Indian students, NYU Tandon MS or NYU Steinhardt?

Ans. Steinhardt at USD 2,243 (INR 1.87 Lakhs) per credit is roughly 11% cheaper than Tandon at USD 2,525 (INR 2.11 Lakhs) per credit. A 30-credit master’s programme costs USD 67,290 (INR 56.19 Lakhs) at Steinhardt versus USD 75,750 (INR 63.28 Lakhs) at Tandon, though most Steinhardt programmes are in education, communication, and applied psychology, not engineering or computing.

Ques. How can Indian students pay their NYU tuition from India?

Ans. NYU’s designated international payment provider is Flywire, which supports INR-denominated bank transfers from Indian banks at rates 2-3% better than raw SWIFT wires. Convera (formerly Western Union GlobalPay) is a supported alternative. Education loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, and IDFC First disburse directly to NYU via Flywire.

Ques. What is the F-1 visa cost for NYU and how long does processing take?

Ans. SEVIS I-901 fee USD 350 (INR 29,225) plus MRV visa application fee USD 185 (INR 15,448), total USD 535 (INR 44,673), both paid before your visa interview. Interview wait times at Indian consulates range 2 to 8 weeks depending on the post; for a September 2027 intake, book your slot by May 2027 to allow buffer for administrative processing.

Ques. Does NYU offer instalment payment plans for tuition?

Ans. Yes, NYU offers a Monthly Payment Plan through the Bursar for a USD 100 (INR 8,350) annual enrolment fee, spreading each semester bill over 4 to 5 monthly instalments. Default billing is per-semester (half in August, half in December). NYU does not offer a discount for lump-sum annual payment.

Ques. Can Indian students at NYU work part-time to offset tuition?

Ans. F-1 visa rules allow up to 20 hours per week of on-campus work during term and 40 hours during breaks. NYU on-campus jobs pay USD 15 to USD 20 (INR 1,253 to INR 1,670) per hour; a full 20-hour week yields roughly USD 1,200 (INR 1.00 Lakh) per month gross, offsetting living costs. Off-campus work requires CPT or OPT authorisation, typically available after two semesters of enrolment.

  • So here at NYU, there is very limited on campus accommodation, and it is majorly for the undergrads. And only a few for the grad students that too fills up quickly since it is very limited. So mostly everyone prefers to lease an apartment in the city and 3-4 students live together depending on the size of the apartment. I found the accommodation in this NYU Community for Indian students on whatsapp. A lot of people post there regarding housing and other important stuff.
  • My monthly rent is $1000, and since it's not an on campus accommodation, I had to buy everything that I wanted, from Bed frame, to table, chair, wardrobe, etc. We also can buy it second from the same Whatsapp community since a lot of people also post there if they want to sell something, even Facebook Marketplace is a good place to buy second hand utilities.
  • Apart form that it usually depends on the apartment owner of the things they provide. Mostly gas, heater (not always), washer and dryer (depends on owner id they provide), fridge, these things are provided by the owner of the apartment.

  • I first made my roommates, and then we looked for online websites like Zillow, Craiglist, etc.
  • My monthly rent is 620$ for my location, and there is a refrigerator, microwave oven, dishwasher, and a room heater there.
  • The main problem was there was no one there who could verify the accommodation in person.
  • First make a group, then start looking for an apartment from May itself, because it takes time to get an apartment.
  • It's 6 miles from my location. Most of them stay in the same area where I live.

I really enjoy studying at NYU, we have soo many resources that two years does not seem enough to explore and use all of them. We also have a safety cab service where we can book free cabs between 11pm and 6 am but only between campus buildings. We also have a box office where we can book cinema and broad way show tickets for heavily discounted prices. The education here is amazing and you will learn a lot if you choose to. Scoring marks depends on how much you actually learn and perform in the college.

Research output, facilities and industry connections are very strong in the field I want to study in. Professors are very experienced and pioneers in the field.
