Indian applicants can view the full St. John’s University admission process for document checklists and English-test cut-offs.

Reddit Insight: Threads on r/IntltoUSA and applicant community forums confirm St. John’s does not offer FAFSA-based need aid to international students, only merit awards. Indian applicants should treat the merit tier as their entire aid package.

India-Specific Scholarships at St. John’s University

St. John’s University does not run a scholarship reserved only for Indian nationals. Every merit award listed above stays open to Indian applicants, and the university does not cap the number issued to Indian students.

Applicants from India should therefore focus on two levers: the general merit tier at admission, plus external India-based scholarships that pair with the SJU offer.

Route for Indian ApplicantsWhat It CoversAction Required
General Academic Merit (UG)Up to USD 35,000 / year (INR 33.41 Lakhs); reduces UG tuition to roughly INR 20 LakhsSubmit admission application; strong 12th board score and SAT or ACT if available
Graduate Merit plus Tobin or Greenberg awardsUSD 3,000 to full tuition on select programmesApply to the target master’s programme; no separate scholarship form for most awards
External India Government or Trust ScholarshipsFull funding stack up to INR 95 Lakhs (Inlaks) or INR 43 Lakhs / year (Fulbright-Nehru)Apply through USIEF, Inlaks Foundation, JN Tata Endowment, KC Mahindra Trust

A common stack for Indian PG applicants combines a Tobin scholarship of USD 8,000 with a JN Tata loan scholarship of INR 10 Lakhs. That mix covers tuition plus the first semester of Queens rent.

See the broader St. John’s University overview for stackable financing pathways.

    St. John’s University PhD Scholarships

PhD funding at St. John’s University sits inside three named packages. Every doctoral applicant with a strong research record is reviewed for funding at the point of admission.

AwardWhat It CoversWork LoadDeadline for Indian Applicants
Doctoral Fellowship (Psychology)Tuition remission for up to 15 credits per semester; annual stipend18 hours per week supporting faculty researchFall 2027 tentative December 15, 2026 (annual cycle)
Graduate Assistantship (Departmental)Tuition remission plus stipend; renewable up to 3 yearsUp to 20 hours per weekRolling; strongest candidates apply by tentative January 15, 2027
University Doctoral Fellowship (first-year)Full remission plus stipend, plus 6 extra summer credits after year oneSame 18-hour research commitmentTied to admission; Fall 2027 tentative January 15, 2027
School of Education Doctoral FellowshipTuition remission and stipendUp to 20 hours per weekTentative December 1, 2026 (annual cycle)

Indian PhD applicants must tick "Yes" to the assistantship question on the graduate admission form. Missing that box removes the application from the funding pool.

A published GRE score above 315, one first-author paper and two research references push most Indian applicants into the funded tier.

External Government Scholarships for St. John’s University Indian Applicants

Government and trust scholarships from India pair well with the St. John’s University merit offer. The Fulbright-Nehru package alone can cover a full year of tuition plus living cost.

Indian applicants should track these five external routes:

    • Fulbright-Nehru (USIEF): the highest-value option for master’s applicants; annual cycle opens May and closes June each year.
    • Inlaks Shivdasani: single-shot funding of up to INR 95 Lakhs; must hold an SJU offer before applying.
    • JN Tata Endowment: interest-free loan scholarship; open January to March each year.
    • KC Mahindra: interest-free loan scholarship; deadline sits at the end of March.
    • EducationUSA Advising Centres: free advising for scholarship shortlisting and essay review across nine Indian cities.
    ScholarshipAmountLevelDeadline
    Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship (USIEF)USD 35,000 to USD 45,000 / year (INR 33.41 to 42.95 Lakhs); tuition, airfare, living, health coverMaster’s, 1 to 2 years2027-28 cycle tentative May 15, 2026 open, June 15, 2026 close (annual cycle)
Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research FellowshipLiving stipend, airfare, health cover for 6 to 9 months at a US hostPhD scholars registered in India2028-29 cycle applications close tentative July 15, 2026
Inlaks Shivdasani ScholarshipUp to USD 100,000 (INR 95.45 Lakhs) total; tuition, living, one-way airfareMaster’s, MPhil, DoctoralTentative February 14 to March 31, 2027 (annual cycle)
JN Tata Endowment Loan ScholarshipUp to INR 10 Lakhs (interest-free loan) plus travel and prize grantsMaster’s, PhD, Post-doctoralTentative January 5 to March 29, 2027 (annual cycle)
KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies AbroadUp to INR 10 Lakhs (interest-free loan scholarship)Master’sTentative March 31, 2027 (annual cycle)

Indian applicants targeting SJU can combine the university merit award with any one external scholarship. Fulbright-Nehru rules do restrict double-dipping on tuition, so most awardees use SJU merit for living expenses instead.

St. John’s University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship an Indian student can stack at St. John’s University?

Ans. An Indian first-year UG can stack up to USD 38,000 per year (INR 36.27 Lakhs). This combines the top USD 35,000 general merit award with the USD 3,000 Catholic High School scholarship. At PG level, a Greenberg School or Insurance Leader Fellowship can cover full tuition of USD 56,140 (INR 53.59 Lakhs). Adding an Inlaks award on top pushes total support past INR 90 Lakhs.

Ques. When should Indian applicants apply to get the best scholarship shot at St. John’s University?

Ans. Submit the admission application by the Fall 2027 Early Action window, tentative November 15, 2026. Merit tiers fill on a rolling basis, and stronger merit offers go to earlier applicants. Graduate applicants targeting Spring 2027 intake must file by the confirmed October 1, 2026 deadline. Award letters typically follow the admission letter within 2 to 4 weeks.

Ques. Do Indian students need a separate scholarship application at St. John’s University?

Ans. No, for most awards. The general merit, Catholic High School, Alumni, Tobin, Greenberg and O’Connell scholarships are triggered automatically by the admission application. Only the Ozanam Scholars, Catholic Scholars, Insurance Leader Fellowship and Zurich Fellowship require a separate form. Assistantship applicants must also tick "Yes" on the graduate admission portal.

Ques. What academic profile does an Indian applicant need for the top merit tier at St. John’s University?

Ans. St. John’s University has not published a fixed cut-off. Indian applicants who reach the top USD 35,000 UG band typically show 90%+ on CBSE, ICSE or major state boards. An SAT above 1350 or ACT above 29 strengthens the case. At PG level, a 3.4 CGPA (roughly 75% Indian aggregate) and a GMAT of 620+ track with the USD 9,000 top graduate tier.

Ques. How does the Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship work for an Indian student applying to St. John’s University?

Ans. Indian applicants apply through USIEF, not the university. Fulbright-Nehru pays USD 35,000 to USD 45,000 per year (INR 33.41 to 42.95 Lakhs) and covers tuition, airfare, living and health cover. Applicants need a 4-year UG degree or a 3-year UG plus PG, plus three years of full-time work experience. The 2027-28 cycle opens tentative May 2026 and interviews run October to November 2026.

Ques. Does the merit scholarship cover Queens rent for an Indian student at St. John’s University?

Ans. The full-cost 2026-27 on-campus package is USD 83,790 (INR 79.98 Lakhs). Even the top USD 35,000 UG merit only trims that to USD 48,790 (INR 46.57 Lakhs). Indian students should plan for USD 15,000 to USD 18,000 (INR 14.32 to 17.18 Lakhs) in yearly living cost even with maximum aid. On-campus work on the F-1 student visa (capped at 20 hours a week during term) bridges roughly half that gap.

Ques. Which St. John’s University scholarships are already closed for the current cycle?

Ans. The Fall 2026 Ozanam Scholars and Catholic Scholars deadlines have passed. Service awards for children of police, firefighters and military closed on January 31, 2026 (US-only). Indian applicants planning to arrive in Fall 2027 should watch the Ozanam window, which reopens tentative December 15, 2026.

Scholarship

Yes, I received a Catholic High Schooler scholarship just for coming from a CHS, then I received an academic scholarship which was awarded based on my high school grades and merit. I didn't have to apply for scholarships, St John's does that for you and automatically awards it. I applied for FAFSA through their official process.

They gave me a lot of scholarship money and it's only 20 mins from home so I can commute and save the money I would've spent doing elsewhere. Combined with FAFSA, it hardly costs much for me to attend.
