University of Delaware offers 25+ scholarships, of which 15 are accessible to Indian applicants. The headline awards are the International Student Merit Scholarship for undergraduates and the University Graduate Scholars Award for Master’s and PhD students.

Indian applicants also access the India-exclusive Rama Marda ’72 Graduate Scholars Fund. Assistantship packages pay USD 22,000 stipend plus full tuition. External awards like Fulbright-Nehru stack on top.

    • Highest UG merit award: USD 15,000 per year (INR 14.18 Lakhs), renewable for four years.
    • Fully funded PhD package: 100% tuition waiver plus USD 22,000 (INR 20.79 Lakhs) annual stipend plus 87% health cover.
    • India-exclusive award: Rama Marda Graduate Scholars Fund covers tuition plus fellowship for applicants who finished undergraduate study in India.
    • Next hard deadline: January 15, 2026 for the undergraduate International Student Merit Scholarship.

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 USD = INR 94.5 as of September 2026. A "tuition waiver" means the university does not charge tuition. A "stipend" is cash paid to the student for living costs.

University of Delaware Scholarships for UG Students

Every international freshman who applies is auto-considered. There is no separate scholarship form. The table lists three awards Indian students most often secure.

    ScholarshipAnnual ValueEligibilityDeadline (2026 Intake)
International Student Merit Scholarship USD 2,000 to USD 15,000 (INR 1.89 to 14.18 Lakhs) International freshmen with strong academics; renewable up to 4 years January 15, 2026
World Scholars Program First semester abroad in Madrid or Rome built into tuition Admitted freshmen in select majors; 100 seats total January 15, 2026 (invitation based)
Delaware Will Shine Scholarship (donor-funded) USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 (INR 0.95 to 4.73 Lakhs) Admitted undergraduates; donor-specific criteria apply Rolling; tentative March 1, 2026

The merit scholarship is renewable for up to four years if you maintain the academic threshold set in the award letter. Indian applicants with a 90% plus Class 12 average and SAT 1300 plus typically secure an award between USD 10,000 and USD 15,000.

The University of Delaware admissions page lists SAT or ACT scores as test-optional, but strong scores sharpen your merit award. World Scholars needs no extra fee: Madrid or Rome runs for one semester before you move to the Newark campus.

University of Delaware Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

UD graduate scholarships for Indian Master’s applicants cluster around three mechanisms:

    • Named university awards like the Graduate Scholars Award cover tuition plus a stipend.
    • Assistantships (TA or RA) pay cash support alongside a full tuition waiver.
    • College-level awards shave 20% off tuition at Lerner for business students.
    ScholarshipAnnual ValueEligibilityDeadline (2026 Intake)
University Graduate Scholars Award Full tuition for Fall and Spring plus academic-year stipend High-achieving graduate applicants; competitive, merit-based January 16, 2026 (noon ET); second round February 24, 2026
Teaching Assistantship (TA) USD 22,000 stipend (INR 20.79 Lakhs) plus full tuition and subsidised health cover Master’s and PhD applicants selected by the hiring department Rolling; priority date January 15, 2026 for Fall 2026
Research Assistantship (RA) USD 22,000 cash support with tuition waived and 87% health insurance Awarded by faculty tied to funded research projects Rolling; priority date February 15, 2026 for Fall 2026
Lerner Graduate Tuition Scholarship 20% of tuition (approx USD 7,400, INR 6.99 Lakhs) plus waived application fee All admitted Lerner graduate students, including international Automatic on admission; apply by April 15, 2026
Houston-NEDA Engineering Graduate Scholarship USD 10,000 per year (INR 9.45 Lakhs) Engineering students with prior degrees from NED University, Pakistan Automatic for eligible applicants; tentative February 1, 2026

Reddit Insight: Most Indian MS Computer Science and MS Data Science students at UD do not receive an incoming TA or RA. They land assistantships from their second semester after proving coursework performance, lifting cash support to INR 20 Lakhs plus from Spring onwards.

If you target an MS at the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, the 20% scholarship is automatic. Combine it with a part-time graduate assistantship for a working stack worth USD 15,000 plus (INR 14.18 Lakhs plus) per year.

India-Specific Scholarships at University of Delaware

UD runs one named fund exclusively for Indian students. The Marda family established it with a USD 2 million (INR 18.9 Crore) donation in 2023. First Marda Scholars enrolled in Fall 2023.

    ScholarshipAnnual ValueEligibilityDeadline (2026 Intake)
Rama Marda ’72 Graduate Scholars Fund Tuition scholarship plus annual fellowship stipend (department-funded tuition) Incoming graduate students who started and finished UG in India Tied to graduate application; tentative January 15, 2026
Rama Marda Scholars Supplementary Award One-time USD 1,500 to USD 3,000 (INR 1.42 to 2.84 Lakhs) travel and settlement grant Marda Scholars accepting offers for Fall 2026 Issued with offer letter; tentative April 2026

To be considered, you must apply through the standard graduate programme. Nominate yourself in the funding section of the application. The Graduate College and your home department jointly select the final cohort each year.

Applicants with first-class CGPA from IITs, NITs, BITS, VIT, Anna University and strong state engineering colleges report the highest success rate. The fund flows through departmental tuition scholarships plus a stipend top-up.

Reddit Insight: Marda Scholars confirmed on department forums that the award stacks with a TA or RA. Final package can reach USD 30,000 plus (INR 28.35 Lakhs plus) across tuition and cash in the first year.

    University of Delaware PhD Scholarships

UD funds the majority of doctoral students with a complete package. 100% tuition for Fall and Spring is standard. Add a stipend plus 87% health cover.

Summer Doctoral Fellowship USD 9,000 (INR 8.51 Lakhs) summer stipend Doctoral students with no or minimal summer funding March 20, 2026 (noon ET)

Review the University of Delaware subject rankings before you pick a department. A strong ARWU or THE subject rank often correlates with a larger pool of RA funding.

External Government Scholarships for University of Delaware Indian Students

Four external awards fund Indian Master’s and PhD students at UD. Each requires a separate application outside UD channels. Stack them with UD aid: Fulbright is restricted, but Tata, Inlaks and Mahindra stack freely.

    ScholarshipAnnual ValueEligibilityDeadline (2026 Intake)
Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship 100% tuition plus USD 1,800 to 2,500 per month (INR 1.70 to 2.36 Lakhs) plus airfare Indian citizens with 55% plus marks and 3 years work experience July 1, 2026 (for 2027-28 intake)
JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship Interest-free loan up to INR 10 Lakhs plus gift stipend up to USD 6,000 (INR 5.67 Lakhs) Indian citizens under 45; Master’s, PhD or post-doc overseas March 15, 2026 for Fall 2026 cycle
Inlaks Shivdasani Scholarship Up to USD 100,000 (INR 94.50 Lakhs) covering tuition, living and airfare Indian passport holders under 30; UG from recognised Indian institution March 31, 2026 (12:00 PM IST)
KC Mahindra Scholarship Up to INR 10 Lakhs interest-free loan; top awardees receive grants Indian citizens pursuing Master’s at a top international university Tentative March 31, 2026
Narotam Sekhsaria Scholarship Interest-free loan up to INR 20 Lakhs Indian citizens under 30 pursuing Master’s or PhD abroad Tentative April 15, 2026

Fulbright is the gold standard but limits visa flexibility. Fulbright scholars receive a J-1 visa with a two-year home residency rule. If H-1B stay is your plan, Tata or Inlaks make more sense.

Admissions decisions from UD typically arrive by mid-March, which aligns well with the Tata and Inlaks deadlines. Lock the UD offer first, then apply to externals with the admission letter.

University of Delaware Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum funding an Indian student can stack at University of Delaware?

Ans. A Marda Scholar who also wins a TA or RA can secure a package worth INR 30 Lakhs plus annually. The stack covers full tuition, a USD 22,000 (INR 20.79 Lakhs) cash stipend and 87% health cover. A one-time travel grant up to USD 3,000 (INR 2.84 Lakhs) adds further relief. Add Inlaks externally for a near-zero-cost degree.

Ques. When should Indian applicants start the UD scholarship timeline?

Ans. Begin 10 months before Fall intake. The UG merit scholarship deadline is January 15, 2026 for Fall 2026. Graduate Scholars and Unidel reviews run on January 16 and February 24, 2026. Admissions decisions arrive by mid-March, in time for Tata (March 15) and Inlaks (March 31) externals.

Ques. Is a separate scholarship application needed at University of Delaware?

Ans. No for the UG International Student Merit Scholarship and the Lerner 20% graduate tuition scholarship. Both are automatic on admission. Yes for the University Graduate Scholars Award, the Unidel award and all external Indian scholarships like Fulbright-Nehru, JN Tata and Inlaks.

Ques. What academic profile does the top USD 15,000 UG scholarship need?

Ans. Indian applicants who received awards near USD 15,000 (INR 14.18 Lakhs) typically showed a 90% plus Class 12 aggregate. SAT 1350 plus or ACT 30 plus is the test benchmark. Two strong recommendation letters helped. Essay quality and co-curricular depth push borderline files into the top tier.

Ques. How does the Rama Marda Graduate Scholars Fund work for Indian applicants?

Ans. The Marda fund gives a tuition scholarship plus a fellowship stipend to graduate students who completed their UG at any recognised Indian university. You apply through the regular graduate programme and tick the funding consideration box. Faculty reviewers pick the final cohort each cycle. First-class CGPA holders from top Indian engineering institutes report the strongest hit rate.

Ques. Will a UD scholarship cover rent in Newark, Delaware?

Ans. A UG merit scholarship of USD 15,000 (INR 14.18 Lakhs) does not cover rent. Newark off-campus housing runs USD 800 to 1,400 per month (INR 0.76 to 1.32 Lakhs). A graduate TA or RA stipend of USD 22,000 (INR 20.79 Lakhs) comfortably covers rent, food and utilities for a shared apartment.

Ques. Can Fulbright-Nehru scholars pick University of Delaware freely?

Ans. Yes. UD is on the Fulbright-Nehru approved host list for Master’s degrees. The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) handles placement in consultation with the candidate. Note that Fulbright carries a mandatory two-year India return clause after study, which blocks H-1B conversion in that window.

University of Delaware Scholarships: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 7 Reviews

At UD, receiving scholarships or financial aid appears to be limited, with few students obtaining them annually. Funding opportunities such as research assistantships (RA) or teaching assistantships (TA) can potentially waive entire semester fees, but this largely depends on the department, faculty, and available funding for specific projects. Notably, the Material Science and Engineering department is known to provide RAs that cover tuition and offer a stipend.

However, the ECE department is reportedly underfunded, making RAs and TAs rare. For international students, external scholarships are unavailable, but there is a possibility of a 50% tuition fee reduction for the first semester based on one's profile, provided it is requested. Overall, the college has limited funding, reducing the likelihood of widespread scholarship availability.

  • No External Scholarship for International Students. However, For the first semester, based on your profile, you may be given 50% off of the tuition fees upon asking (if not asked, no use). If you are a TA/RA, you may be given a tuition waiver. I haven't received anything, as I have not asked in my first semester and am not a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant.

  • I opted for Off campus accommodation using leasing websites. I have a group of 4 people. So, it cost around $450 per head in sharing. However, there are cheaper options.
  • For future students, look for apartments like Southgate Garden, Lehigh, Thorn or any townhouses using the Zillow website. Make sure the accommodation has a UD Shuttle bus facility, which helps you commute within the university.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not receive any scholarship or financial aid. While other departments do offer it. The ECE department in UDel is not very well funded.
  • Even students rarely get TA or RA in the ECE department as compared to other departments.
  • I haven't seen anybody get financial aid or scholarships for master's students. Maximum I have heard of students get RAship(Research Assistantships), that is in Material Science and Engineering department only. So those students don't have to pay tuition but get a stipend.

  • I found the Indian Graduate Student Association WhatsApp group through someone I met on the platform reddit, from a person who was also going to attend Udel. From the group WhatsApp group, I messaged and spoke to people to help find roommates. Among roommates, I discussed the various accommodation options.

  • The monthly rent is $1650 for 2 BHK, 1 BA. This includes a washing machine, dryer and oven. My accommodation is 1.4 miles from campus.

  • Most Indian students stay off-campus, like I do. They stay in the same accommodation as I do.

  • My recommendation for future students seeking accommodation is that they please stay as close to campus as possible. It does matter a lot in terms of commute and utilizing opportunities on campus.

Scholarship

  • No, I did not receive any scholarship in my course.
  • None of my batchmates received any scholarships from the college.
  • I think very less number of students receive scholarships each year. The amount depends on what kind of scholarship they received.
  • The funding is very less in this college , so there is a very less chance of getting the scholarship for students.

  • I find my accommodation by talking to the seniors. I messaged in the groups and collected information from them.
  • There is a site called apartments.com , in this site we can find the available housing in the locality.
  • The monthly rent is around 1800, and all the basic amenities are included in that.
  • The challenges are finalizing house from India itself, without seeing the place by myself.
  • My accommodation is 3 miles from the campus

Scholarship

  • No I have not recieved any scholarships from UD so far but getting a research assistantship or teaching assistantship can waive off entire semester fees but it depends on the department, faculty and thier funding sources for that project.
  • I have seen couple of graduate students getting their fees waived off for the fall 2024 semester and spring 2025 semester

  • I found the accomadation on appratment.com and found roommates through wahtsapp groups.
  • My monthly rent is 1894 dollars which includes gas and heating, there's seprate bill for light, water and wifi.
  • I did not face much challanges while finding the accomadation which was a pretty straight forward process of understanding locations close to the university for the accomadation there's nothing so difficult about it.
  • My accomadation is 2KMs away from the university. Most indian students live at Pine Brook Apartments.

I have lived in Delaware my whole life and love it here! I love the master's speech pathology program at the University of Delaware too, you start working with clients two weeks into the program and they value experience over classroom learning.

I chose the university of Delaware due to the close location to home (3 hours) and the campus environment. I really liked how it had a college feel but also didn?t feel isolated from the world like some other colleges felt.
