California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants clear a two-part gate at Cal Poly Pomona: an academic threshold on the Indian scale plus an English test minimum. All test scores below are drawn verbatim from the current CPP International Admissions page for 2027 intake.

Postgraduate (Master’s / MBA):

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.5 GPA on the US 4.0 scale, translating to 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 for Indian applicants (recommended); MBA and Accountancy typically look for 3.0 GPA or 65% equivalent.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 new scale, effective 21 January 2026) / 80 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.5; Duolingo English Test 105.
  • Credentials: WES or approved equivalent evaluation of Indian bachelor’s transcripts; original transcripts and marksheets sent by post.
  • Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT for MBA and select engineering programmes; waivers granted case-by-case for strong academic profiles.

Undergraduate (Bachelor’s):

  • Academic: Minimum 2.5 GPA (3.0 for non-California residents) in Indian Class 12; translates to 70% to 75% aggregate (recommended). CBSE, ICSE, and state-board results are all accepted.
  • English: TOEFL iBT 4 (1-6 new scale) / 71 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.0; Duolingo English Test 95.
  • English waiver: Available for applicants with three or more years of full-time secondary schooling where English was the primary medium of instruction.

Key insight: Indian applicants can waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement by producing a medium-of-instruction letter from a CBSE, ICSE, IB, or IGCSE school confirming English-medium instruction. Attach the letter to the Cal State Apply file to trigger the waiver automatically.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Acceptance Rate 2027

Cal Poly Pomona does not publish a headline institutional acceptance rate segmented by international applicant status. Public third-party sources place the overall admit rate between 55% and 74%; the mid-range figure below reflects post-2023 selectivity tightening in impacted engineering and business majors.

Estimated acceptance rate: 55% (estimated)

The rate varies sharply by major. Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Business Administration are classified as impacted programmes with tighter GPA cut-offs, while general Liberal Arts and less-competitive majors sit closer to the 74% headline. Indian applicants clear the 55% band comfortably with a strong academic profile and a clean English score.

Reality check: The 55% headline understates true difficulty for Indian applicants targeting impacted engineering majors, where the effective admit rate can drop below 40% for out-of-state international candidates. Cushion the shortlist with two safer CSU peers.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Cal Poly Pomona reports strong graduate outcomes anchored by aerospace, engineering, hospitality, and technology recruiters based across Southern California.

  • Placement rate: 95% employment or graduate school enrolment within 6 months of graduation, per Money.com College Scorecard data.
  • Median salary: Early-career $72,000 (₹68.72 lakh); mid-career $110,000 (₹105.00 lakh) per US Department of Education College Scorecard.
  • Top engineering recruiters: Boeing, Northrop Grumman, NASA JPL, SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Pratt and Whitney, ULA, Nvidia, and ExxonMobil.
  • Post-study visa: 12-month OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension gives 36 months of legal work time for STEM master’s graduates, opening two full H-1B lottery windows.
  • Career support: Cal Poly Pomona career fairs draw more employers than any other CSU campus; industry-linked capstones and co-op placements sit inside most engineering degrees.

Insider note: The aerospace cluster around Long Beach, El Segundo, and Hawthorne means Boeing, Northrop, and SpaceX interviews often happen on-campus, sparing Indian graduates the cost and F-1 complications of long-distance recruiting travel.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona vs Peer Universities

Cal Poly Pomona sits inside the California State University public system alongside strong peer engineering campuses. The peer set below covers other CSU polytechnic and engineering-heavy publics that Indian applicants routinely cross-shortlist.

UniversityAvg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR)Collegedunia Study AbroadOne-line differentiator
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona$17,812 / ₹17.00 lakh#440Southern California polytechnic; strong aerospace and hospitality pipeline
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo$21,000 / ₹20.04 lakh (estimated)#260 (estimated)Higher-ranked sister polytechnic; harder admit for Indian applicants
San Jose State University$20,000 / ₹19.09 lakh (estimated)#310 (estimated)Silicon Valley base; unmatched Bay Area technology recruiting
San Diego State University$19,000 / ₹18.14 lakh (estimated)#285 (estimated)Coastal campus; strong for biotechnology and hospitality
California State University, Long Beach$18,000 / ₹17.18 lakh (estimated)#325 (estimated)Large public near Los Angeles; broad programme mix

Cal Poly Pomona differentiates on aerospace industry access, the College of Engineering’s #9 US News national rank, and the strongest US polytechnic hospitality programme (CEOWORLD #8). Where San Jose State dominates on Bay Area placements and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo edges on overall regional rank, Pomona holds the lowest-cost route into the Southern California engineering job market.

Key insight: Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo share a system-level academic brand but recruit in different job markets; SLO feeds Bay Area and Silicon Valley engineering, while Pomona feeds LA aerospace and hospitality.

Cal Poly Pomona is built for Indian STEM undergraduates and MBA candidates who want a public California polytechnic degree with a learn-by-doing curriculum and direct Southern California industry access. Total 4-year undergraduate investment lands near ₹160 lakh; the ₹68.72 lakh median early-career salary plus the 36-month STEM OPT window anchors a workable loan-repayment path.

It is not the right pick for applicants chasing global QS or THE rank prestige or a research-heavy pathway to a US PhD. Those profiles should shortlist Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (higher regional rank, tighter admit) or top University of California campuses alongside Cal Poly Pomona.

Overview

They had the program I wanted with lower tuition than other schools. This college also happened to be relatively close to my parents so the convenience of that was a definite factor for my choice.

Fees

The fees are around 13k for tuition but that does not include the necessity of books, scantrons, parking pass, and printing assignments.

Overview

Cal Poly Pomona is a 'hands-on' school, they're very well known for their 'learn by doing', the philosophy which is very beneficial in various factors, and for engineering majors, it is really helpful, especially because they prepare you for the work field.

Fees

Tuition is about $7500 but they break it down to you by tuition, transportation, meals, personal expenses, room & board, books, etc. Which came out to a total of approximately $18000 a year. Other charges include the parking pass which is about $150 a semester. Sometimes professors need you to use certain items for their class like the 'blue book' or other items that aren't necessarily expensive but they still are necessary, they are 0.60 each I believe.

Overview

Because it has a great accounting program and offers lots of opportunities for jobs and internships. It allows me to have hands-on experience and get lots of opportunities to get out and go into the field of accounting.

Fees

I am not sure about the fees. It shouldn?t be more than $40 per person if they are not a cal poly Pomona student.

Overview

The location was ideal for me. As a cal state university, the price was affordable. The professors of the CLASS were knowledgeable and great to work with. There was no need to write an application essay or to take the act

Fees

ASI charges, health charges, the parking charge is outraging! I attended while the university was on a quarter system, now under the semester, the charges are even higher.
