San Jose State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
SJSU sets a university minimum GPA threshold, and many programmes layer higher subject-specific cutoffs on top for Indian applicants.
Postgraduate Requirements at SJSU
- Academic: Four-year Bachelor’s with a minimum 2.5 GPA on 4.0 scale, equivalent to 55% or CGPA 5.5/10. Competitive MS Computer Science and MS AI cohorts admit closer to 65% or CGPA 6.5/10.
- English test minimums (verify at official page): TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 scale) or 80 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS Academic 6.5, IELTS Indicator 6.5, PTE Academic 53, Duolingo English Test 120. Speech Pathology and Biotechnology require IELTS 8.0.
- Credential verification: WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation required for all Indian transcripts.
- Standardised tests: GRE required by some engineering programmes; GMAT waived for MBA Professional applicants with strong work experience.
Undergraduate Requirements at SJSU
- Academic: Class 12 CBSE, ICSE, or state board with 70% aggregate minimum for CSU eligibility. Engineering, Nursing, and Business majors are impacted and admit closer to 80% to 90%.
- English test minimums (verify at official page): TOEFL iBT 3.5 (1-6 scale) or 61 (0-120 legacy scale) for non-engineering majors, and TOEFL iBT 4.0 or 80 for engineering. IELTS Academic 6.0 non-engineering and 6.5 engineering. PTE Academic 44 or 53. Duolingo 95.
Note: Indian applicants with a three-year Bachelor’s taught fully in English can request a TOEFL waiver at SJSU, provided the medium of instruction letter is issued by the university registrar and not the department.
San Jose State University Acceptance Rate 2027
The overall SJSU acceptance rate stands at 85% (estimated) for the 2025-26 cycle. Programme-level admit rates vary widely because SJSU designates competitive majors as "impacted" and applies stricter cutoffs. This figure is a session-derived estimate and not an officially disclosed institutional publication.
| Year | Overall Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-26 | 85% (estimated) | Broadly stable |
| 2024-25 | 78% (estimated) | Slight widening for non-impacted majors |
| 2023-24 | 67% (estimated) | Post-pandemic tightening |
Impacted majors like Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Nursing admit closer to 30% to 40% of applicants. The MS AI programme is the tightest graduate seat.
Reality check: A 85% headline rate does not apply to Indian MS Computer Science or MS AI applicants. Assume a 25% to 40% effective admit rate for popular STEM tracks, and target GPA 3.5 or CGPA 7/10 minimum to stay competitive.

Insider note: Most Indian MS students share a two-bedroom apartment with three roommates in West San Jose or Santa Clara. This drops monthly rent below USD 900 per person and puts VTA light rail within walking distance.
San Jose State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
San Jose State University spans a 154-acre urban campus in downtown San Jose. The city is the tenth-largest in the United States and forms the civic heart of Silicon Valley.
- Location and transit: Downtown campus with VTA light rail, Caltrain access to San Francisco, and 15-minute drive to San Jose International Airport.
- Housing: On-campus residence halls cost USD 15,543 to 17,000 per academic year, with limited guaranteed placement for new international graduate students.
- Notable facility: The Martin Luther King Jr. Library is one of only two joint city-university libraries in the United States.
- Indian community: Roughly 900 Indian students are enrolled, with active chapters of the Indian Student Association and Telugu Students Association.
What Indian students say: Direct access to Silicon Valley internships is the single largest campus draw, and housing search remains the toughest first-semester hurdle. Most students recommend booking accommodation four weeks before landing in San Jose.
San Jose State University Scholarships 2027

SJSU also holds #1151-1200 in the QS Sustainability Ranking 2026 and #21 tie in US News Undergraduate Engineering (non-doctorate) 2026. The Lucas College is ranked #3 among Top Public Regional Universities West.
Key insight: The absence of a QS World rank matters less for Indian applicants than the US News Regional #4 position. US employers, F-1 visa officers, and Silicon Valley recruiters weight the regional and subject rankings more than global position for CSU institutions.

San Jose State University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
SJSU reports strong employment outcomes because of its Silicon Valley pipeline. The Career Center runs semester-long recruiting fairs that draw tier-one tech employers on-site.
- Employment within 6 months (MS Computer Science): 92% (per 2019-20 SJSU salary survey, latest published)
- Median MS Computer Science starting salary: USD 105,000 (INR 100.70 lakh, market median)
- Median MS Engineering starting salary: USD 95,000 to 110,000 (INR 91.11 to 105.49 lakh, market median)
- Top recruiting sectors: Software, cloud infrastructure, semiconductor design, and consumer electronics
- Post-study work: Standard 12-month F-1 OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension for eligible programmes, granting 36 total months of US work authorisation.
Insider note: Apple, Google, Cisco, NVIDIA, and Adobe hire SJSU MS graduates directly through campus career fairs. Indian graduates typically secure offers before OPT begins, which shortens the H-1B sponsorship timeline meaningfully.
San Jose State University vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants compare SJSU against Bay Area, CSU system, and cross-country public peers with similar cost profiles and STEM depth. The comparison anchors on annual PG fees, ranking, and Silicon Valley proximity.
| University | US News Regional or National 2026 | Collegedunia Study Abroad | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| San Jose State University | #4 Regional West | #440 | USD 19,785 / INR 18.98 lakh | Direct Silicon Valley pipeline |
| California State University East Bay | #37 Regional West | NA | USD 19,032 / INR 18.25 lakh (estimated) | Bay Area location, lower rent cluster |
| San Francisco State University | #25 Regional West | NA | USD 19,032 / INR 18.25 lakh (estimated) | Urban San Francisco base |
| California State University Long Beach | #12 Regional West | NA | USD 20,196 / INR 19.36 lakh (estimated) | Southern California hiring network |
| University of California Santa Cruz | #85 National | NA | USD 33,564 / INR 32.19 lakh (estimated) | UC system research prestige |
SJSU offers the strongest employer proximity per dollar spent among CSU peers. Its regional US News rank leads the West bracket for six consecutive editions.
San Jose State University suits an Indian STEM applicant with a GPA of 3.5 or CGPA 7/10 and a career target inside a Silicon Valley product firm. The two-year MS investment of INR 65 lakh, against a median first-year salary of INR 100.70 lakh, delivers full cost recovery within nine months of employment. Direct hiring pipelines with Apple, Google, and NVIDIA form the strongest single advantage of the SJSU brand for Indian F-1 MS in USA applicants.
SJSU is not the right pick for applicants prioritising a global QS or THE rank for their post-study country return, or for students needing large need-based aid. Applicants in that bracket should evaluate the University of Illinois Chicago as a public alternative with stronger global ranking coverage.
San Jose State University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on the SJSU campus?
Ans. Yes, F-1 international students at San Jose State University may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during regular semesters. Most SJSU MS Computer Science, MS AI, MS Data Science, MS Engineering, and MS Software Engineering programmes qualify. Employers must be E-Verify enrolled for the STEM extension application to be approved.
Ques. Are conditional offers issued at San Jose State University?
Ans. SJSU does issue conditional offers to international graduate applicants who meet academic thresholds but have pending final transcripts, degree certificates, or English test scores. The condition must be cleared before the I-20 is released. Conditional admits should submit outstanding documents at least six weeks before the semester start date to secure visa timelines and course registration.
Ques. Does SJSU require WES evaluation for Indian transcripts?
Ans. Yes, San Jose State University requires a course-by-course credential evaluation from WES or ECE for all Indian graduate applicants. The evaluation must be sent directly by the evaluating agency to SJSU Graduate Admissions. WES evaluation typically takes 7 to 20 business days after receiving official transcripts. - Faculty here are very welcoming. They make us feel comfortable during the class, so that we can even ask questions without any hesitation. They are very accessible.
Campus Life
- There is an organisation for Indian students that is recognised by the university. We celebrate all the Indian festivals. They also conduct workshops for resume building and to grow our network.
Fees
- Tuition fees are $31,000 and Insurance for the entire duration would be around $4000 living expenses would be $900 per month

- The curriculum of the university is good and has in-depth knowledge.
- The Infrastructure is good and the campus is well maintained.
- University has access to various lab tools.
Dislikes
- Courses enrollment is a difficult job, you have to be quick or else have to wait till next semester.
- It is little difficult to do any administrative processes.
- There is very less parking spots around university.
Campus Life
- Our university has various departments other than Science and Engineering blocks. There are some departments like music and arts for the respective students. They also have their respective clubs and each of the clubs has its own organisations to operate and conduct the events. For every semester, they conduct various events like welcoming events and fundraising events and also some volunteer organisations come and provide their services, which encourages students during their college times.
- We have a very vast library and have access to all the reference books that are required for our academics and many published articles, which helps students to do their project works and research. As a graduate student in the Electrical Engineering department, I got an opportunity to explore the courses like Digital Design and SystemVerilog-based Verification and also Logic Verification with Unified Verification Methodology (UVM), which is very much helpful for someone like me who is looking for opportunities in Digital Electronics.
- The faculty are very well experienced and also use all their experience in making the students understand the complexities in VLSI design. The labs are also equipped with the most updated and real-life tools from Synopsys and Cadence.
- Our university also encourages the students to excel their skills in co-curricular activities like basketball and Soccer. Unfortunately, I'm not that interested in any sports, so I did not participate in any tournaments but I have been to many events and tournaments at the Spartan Stadium and the Indoor stadium at our college.
- Apart from these activities, we have the Indian Student Organisation and also the International Student Organisation, which conduct the events and also some religious activities for students who are interested in their religious beliefs and who want to celebrate their festivals and could not go back to their families in their home countries.

- Strong curriculum and practical training
- Hands-on experience and research opportunities
- Faculty is supportive and have industry connection
Dislikes
- Sometimes few of the courses demands too much of writing and documenting.
- For Data Analytics course, students don't have choice to select courses on their own. The curriculum is already planned which every student has to take.
- There are very few part-time jobs available in the campus, which gets filled very quickly because of high demand.
Campus Life
- There is only one campus situated in the downtown area.
- There is a Martin Luther King library, gym and swimming pool that is very large. In addition, there is a building that has a lab; the computers are equipped with NVIDIA GPUs, which you can use to run your heavy models or do assignments.
- There are always some events going on on campus, be it a job fair or a cultural event. Indian students have an ISO group. They celebrate Diwali, Dandiya and Holi every year. You can go and participate in the event.
Fees
- Tuition fees: 26,200 USD
- Living expense: 20,000 USD
- The fees are charged credit-wise and semester-wise. We had to pay for every credit and pay before the start of every semester.
- Rent is around 700-1000 USD
- Transportation would be around 100-120 USD
- Regular expenses would include groceries and utilities, which would be like approximately 1000-1500 USD per month. Plus, it varies from person to person.

- Location - It is located in the heart of silicon valley. There are multiple networking events and opportunities and moreover I have heard from seniors that location has an added benefit while looking for full time job opportunities
- Food Pantry - The university has an active program under which the students can get free groceries (the type and quantity depends on the availability) once a week. This enables me to have basic items such as milk, onions, potatoes, canned food for free.
- Library - I quite like the library and it’s collection. It has 8 floors and first 4 floors are public library while the other floors have quieter seating space for studies and also have dedicated meeting rooms.
Dislikes
- Campus size & part time job availability - The size of campus is quite small in comparison to other universities. This also reduces the available on campus part time job opportunities. The opportunities are too less and the competition is too high with majority students being Indians.
- Curriculum- Talking about my curriculum, it is pretty rigid with no subjects to choose from. Subjects are already chosen for me unlike the education system here in the USA.
- Less student clubs - I think there are lesser student clubs here.
Campus Life
- My university has only one campus. There is library, recreational center, wellness center in the university. There are a lot of festivals happening here and there and many of the Indian festivals are celebrated here.
- There are many clubs including a few of Indian clubs which regularly held events for the students. There are also a lot of student organizations that help students throughout the semester which is also a big help.
Fees
- Fee is charged semester wise. The tuition fee is 8749 for one semester. Other than that there is cost for insurance which is quite high.
- Rent really depends on the property one lives in. But it is around 570-800 dollars per month. For transportation the university provides a clipper card for 3 dollars which lets us travel in bus and light rail for free.

- Academics and professors are really good
- Location and ease of access to community transportation
- Tuition fees is comparatively less
Dislikes
- Probably not as reputed as other top universities
- Mostly better for undergrads other than grads
- Cost of living is bit high and not a big campus
Campus Life
- I am personally not involved in many of the clubs and other events. I seldom find these interesting but I can see that there are always some or other types of events going on.
- Most of the master's students don't generally focus on these as most of the undergrads are in the clubs. There is a great library that students have access to until midnight so that's a great place to be.

Dislikes
- I am not able to take the subjects that i want to take as elective as i m restricted to the provided list,
- Also the prerequisites as i am in engineering managemnet course so i have to complete some prerequisites and before that i can not take BUS elective subjects,
- Also the insurance, we have to buy the insurance from the college only we dont allow with third party
Campus Life
- We have only one campus here; here in the SJSU we have all the facilities, including the gym, swimming pool, and ground for different activities like basketball, volleyball, pickleball, etc.
- There are lots of clubs that organise Indian activities like celebrations of Diwali, Navratri, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Holi.
- I have been joined in 2 major clubs: one is an Indian student organisation, and the other is Spartan Analytics.
Fees
- My entire course needs 30 credits of subjects without considering pre-requisites
- My master is for 2 years and it cost me around 32k to 34k for my entire coursework.
- In addition to this, we have to pay for health insurance, which costs $800 for fall and $1100 for spring, including summer. And same for the next year.
- My fees can be paid through an education loan or case (not sure if they allot, but I heard of it). Here one subject costs around 3k so by this we can calculate the rest of the fees.
- Monthly expenses are mainly for rent and utilities, which is around 650 per person here in San Jose.

Myrtle events take place here throughout the semester. Starting from Weeks of Welcome to different club events, there is no day we don't have an event.

- I always intended to pursue masters in Data Analytics as I always loved working around the data and make informed decisions. As San Jose city is well known for the field of Data Analytics, I opted to pursue my masters in SJSU as it is well reputed for this program and it is also situated in the silicon valley.
- Culture and diversity. There are many students coming from all over the world to study in this college. So growing network is very much helpful and easy here.
Dislikes
- Class timings. As most of the professors are working professionals, they take up the class once they finish their work. Like around we will be having class at 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. I personally did not like this as I am a morning person.
Overview
SJSU is pretty good. They offer some well structured curicullum and the faculties here are well experienced. Learning wise this college is exceptional, but for jobs we need to apply outside as there is no placements and companies coming to college. Most of the universities here does not provide campus placements like India. Each student should approach to the company employers and apply.
