Brigham Young University (BYU) is a private research university in Provo, Utah, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ranked #110 in the US News Best National Universities 2026. Founded in 1875, it enrols close to 34,000 students on a single 560-acre campus at the base of the Wasatch Mountains.

The university awards more than 200 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees across 12 colleges, with English as the medium of instruction. Its Marriott School of Business, Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering, and School of Accountancy draw the strongest Indian applicant pools among universities in USA. Fall and Winter are the two primary intakes.

  • US News National Universities (2026): #110
  • Acceptance Rate: 68% (estimated)
  • Intakes: Fall (August), Winter (January), plus smaller Spring and Summer terms
  • PG tuition (2025-2026): USD 8,672 to 17,344 per year (INR 8.3 to 16.6 lakh)
  • Average MBA starting salary: USD 122,000 (INR 1.17 crore)
  • US News Best Value (2026): #17

Because BYU is subsidised by tithes of Church members, non-LDS Indian applicants pay double the tuition of LDS members but still settle well below the US private-university median. Every enrolled student, LDS or not, must secure an Ecclesiastical Endorsement and follow the campus Honor Code, a requirement most Indian applicants underestimate at shortlist stage. Fall entry is the standard route to F-1 visa processing for an MBA in USA or MS pathway.

Admission Status: Opens 26 August 2026 (Fall 2027 intake). The Winter 2027 undergraduate window closed on 3 August 2026 and Fall 2027 applications open on 26 August 2026, with a priority deadline of 15 December 2026 and a final deadline of 1 June 2027. Indian applicants should also plan for the 1 February 2027 scholarship deadline, which is separate from the admission form.

Popular BYU Courses and Fees at Brigham Young University 2027

BYU offers over 200 undergraduate majors, 68 master’s programmes and 26 doctoral tracks. Programme length is standard for the US system: a two-year master’s or MBA, a four-year bachelor’s degree, and a two-semester academic year. Tuition is charged per semester, and non-LDS Indian applicants pay exactly double the LDS rate on a published policy. The figures below reflect the officially published 2025-2026 tuition schedule; the 2026-2027 rates typically release each May with a 3% annual step.

Insider note: Indian applicants most often shortlist Accountancy, Information Systems, MBA, and Computer Science at BYU. The Marriott School’s late-selection Junior Core (declared at the end of sophomore year) is a filter Indian students planning direct-entry majors regularly miss.

Brigham Young University Admission 2027

BYU runs two major intakes for Indian applicants: Fall (starts late August) and Winter (starts January). Fall is the primary international entry point because it aligns with a full academic year and F-1 visa processing in India.

Brigham Young University UG Admission Dates 2027

The undergraduate application uses a single online form for freshmen and transfers, with priority and final deadlines for each term.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
Fall 2027 application opens26 August 2026Portal opens; start Ecclesiastical Endorsement early
Fall 2027 priority deadline15 December 2026Recommended cutoff for scholarship consideration

Brigham Young University PG Admission Dates 2027

Graduate deadlines are set by each department, not centrally. Most Marriott School and Engineering PG programmes close between December 2026 and February 2027 for Fall 2027 entry.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
Marriott MBA Round 1 deadlineExpected 15 November 2026 (based on prior cycle)Confirm per programme; strongest scholarship round
Marriott MBA Round 2 deadlineExpected 15 January 2027 (based on prior cycle)Best for most Indian applicants with GMAT/GRE ready

Credential verification (WES/IQAS)Start 8 to 10 weeks before deadlineIndian degrees usually need course-by-course evaluation
Fall 2027 programme startLate August 2027I-20 arrives after academic admission and financial certification

Planning note: The Ecclesiastical Endorsement is not a document you can fast-track. From 1 July 2026, first-time endorsements require interviews with both a bishop and a stake presidency member, which adds 2 to 3 weeks to your timeline. Non-LDS Indian applicants get the endorsement through a Church leader or clergy of their own faith.

Brigham Young University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The academic bar for Indian applicants is moderate, but the Ecclesiastical Endorsement and Honor Code screen candidates on lifestyle fit before academic review.

PG Requirements

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% to 65% or CGPA 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10 (recommended); Marriott programmes prefer 65% and above
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT overall 85 with subscores of Speaking 22 and Listening, Reading, Writing 21 each; IELTS Academic overall 7.0 with each band 6.0; TOEFL PBT 564. PTE Academic accepted (verify score at BYU Admissions). TOEFL iBT reports use the legacy 0-120 scale here; the new 1-6 band scale applies from January 2026 with dual reporting through 2028
  • Credential evaluation: Course-by-course WES or IQAS report of the Indian bachelor’s transcript
  • Ecclesiastical Endorsement: Mandatory for every applicant, LDS or not

UG Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ISC, or State Board) with 70% to 85% (recommended); STEM majors prefer 80% and above with Maths and Science
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 85 overall or IELTS 7.0 overall (same subscore rules as PG)
  • Ecclesiastical Endorsement: Mandatory

Note: IELTS 7.0 with 6.0 in every band is a stricter bar than most US peers, and Indian applicants regularly miss on the Speaking band. Retake if any single band drops below 6.0, because BYU does not superscore across sittings.

Brigham Young University Acceptance Rate 2027

BYU admits roughly 68% (estimated) of applicants overall, which is moderately selective by US standards but sits well above the Ivy-League band. Marriott School, Engineering, and Nursing run tighter internal cuts after year two. The single official figure below is drawn from third-party US enrolment data; verify the current-cycle rate at US News Best Colleges and the BYU acceptance-rate silo.

YearAcceptance RateTrend
202668% (estimated)Stable
202567% (estimated)Marginal drop
202459% (estimated)Selective year

Fall entry is the most competitive intake because international applicant volume peaks then. Winter intake typically sees a higher accept rate, though seat count is smaller.

Reality check: For Indian applicants, the real gate is not the 68% headline. It is Marriott and Engineering’s internal Junior-Core selection at the end of sophomore year, plus a clean Ecclesiastical Endorsement. Applicants who look strong academically still get filtered on programme fit and endorsement follow-through.

Insider note: Shared rooms in BYU-approved off-campus housing (Wyview, Wymount, Heritage Halls) hold rent close to USD 550 to 650 per month. Free UTA bus and FrontRunner access on the BYU student ID cuts commute costs to near zero, so most Indian students skip a car in year one.

Brigham Young University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

BYU’s single 560-acre campus sits in Provo, Utah, a small city of about 116,000 at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains, 45 miles south of Salt Lake City.

  • Location and transport: Free UTA bus and FrontRunner rail on the BYU student ID; Salt Lake City International Airport is a 50-minute drive north
  • Housing: BYU-approved contracted housing on and near campus; single students required to live in approved housing for the first year; shared rooms USD 550 to 800 (INR 52,000 to 76,000) per month
  • Facilities: Harold B. Lee Library holds 6 million books and 98,000 print journals, one of the largest US university libraries; the Life Sciences Building and Engineering Building added since 2015
  • Indian community: About 1,500 international students from 100+ countries; the Indian Student Association hosts Diwali, Holi, and Republic Day events each year

What Indian students say: Winter temperatures drop below freezing from December to February, budget for a proper snow coat before arrival. Halal and vegetarian options exist in Cannon Commons and off-campus, though the range is narrower than in Salt Lake City or larger US cities.

BYU Scholarships 2027 for Indian Students

BYU offers three main scholarship categories open to international applicants: academic merit, need-based, and departmental talent awards. International-specific funding is limited, so most Indian students combine partial aid with family funds or education loans.

Planning note: International-specific funding is very limited, so the realistic scholarship route for Indian applicants is (a) apply as a merit candidate against a strong academic file, or (b) target Marriott School auto-review awards where admission carries scholarship consideration. Miss the 1 February scholarship deadline and you cannot back-fill later.

Brigham Young University Rankings 2027

BYU’s strongest position is in the US News Best National Universities 2026 at #110 and Best Value Schools at #17. In world rankings the university sits outside the top 800, reflecting a teaching-first identity rather than a research-output profile.

Subject-wise, Collegedunia Study Abroad places BYU Computer Science at #385 of 392 globally, a notable gap from the university’s overall rank. US News subject rankings put the Marriott School’s undergraduate Accounting programme in the US top 10 in most recent editions, which is the true academic strength Indian applicants should weigh.

Key insight: For US F-1 visa officers and Indian employers, BYU’s US News National Universities rank of #110 carries more weight than its global rank. If your target is US employment on OPT rather than pure research reputation, that domestic figure is the one that opens doors.

Brigham Young University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

BYU’s Marriott School reports strong graduate employment outcomes, particularly for MBA, MAcc, and MISM graduates, with a career centre integrated into every college.

  • MBA employment within 90 days: 93% (Marriott School class profile)
  • MBA median starting base salary: USD 122,000 (INR 1.17 crore), with signing bonus averaging USD 25,000 (INR 23.9 lakh)
  • Top recruiter sectors: Consulting, technology, financial services, consumer goods, and accounting (Big Four)
  • Indian alumni: Alumni sit in senior roles across Adobe, Goldman Sachs, PwC, EY, and Deloitte US practices
  • Post-study work: F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of OPT; STEM-designated masters (Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics) qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of US work eligibility

Insider note: Marriott School’s alumni pipeline into Utah’s tech corridor (Silicon Slopes) opens interviews at Adobe, Qualtrics, and Domo that other US schools cannot match on cost-to-outcome. Indian graduates who target Utah or Bay Area tech see the strongest ROI.

Brigham Young University vs Peer Universities

BYU competes with mid-tier private US universities on value, and with Utah publics on cost. The peer set below mixes both.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG Fee (non-LDS/international)Differentiator
Brigham Young University (Provo)#1201-1400#207 world / #81 USAUSD 17,344 (INR 16.6 lakh)Lowest tuition among ranked US private research universities

BYU-IdahoNot ranked in QS 2027NAUSD 6,592 (INR 6.3 lakh) (estimated)Cheapest CES option, teaching-focused, no OPT-competitive STEM masters

BYU stands out in this peer set on one metric: tuition per US News National Rank point. At #110 with non-LDS PG tuition of USD 17,344, it is the lowest-cost private option Indian applicants can shortlist inside the US News top 150.

The Marriott School’s Accounting, MBA, and Information Systems programmes carry US-market recognition on par with schools charging 3x the tuition, which is the single reason most Indian applicants file here.

For Indian applicants who fit the Honor Code lifestyle, Brigham Young University offers the lowest total investment (USD 63,000 to 71,000 or INR 60 to 68 lakh over two years for a non-LDS PG) against a median MBA salary of USD 122,000 (INR 1.17 crore). The Marriott School network into Silicon Slopes and Big Four accounting is the single strongest advantage over similarly-priced US publics, and F-1 visa processing is straightforward once the I-20 is issued.

For Indian applicants who cannot commit to the Ecclesiastical Endorsement, dress and grooming standards, or Honor Code lifestyle, BYU is the wrong shortlist. Consider University of Southern California for a value-competitive US private with no lifestyle requirement, or Utah’s public flagship for a similar Utah cost base without the Church affiliation.

Brigham Young University FAQs

Ques. Does Brigham Young University waive the GMAT or GRE for Indian applicants?

Ans. The Marriott School MBA offers GMAT and GRE waivers on a case-by-case basis for candidates with strong quantitative undergraduate coursework, three or more years of professional experience, and a CGPA of 3.3 or above on 4.0 scale. The waiver is not automatic and must be requested in the application. MS programmes in Computer Science and Engineering still recommend the GRE, and dropping it can weaken a scholarship review.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at BYU?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa rules allow up to 20 hours per week of on-campus work during term and 40 hours per week during official breaks. BYU on-campus jobs (library, dining, research assistantships) start at roughly USD 10 to 13 (INR 960 to 1,240) per hour. Off-campus work is restricted to CPT or OPT authorisation, which requires programme completion or specific coursework linkage.

Ques. What is the application fee at Brigham Young University for Indian applicants?

Ans. The undergraduate application fee is USD 35 (INR 3,350) and the graduate application fee ranges from USD 50 to 75 (INR 4,800 to 7,200) depending on programme. Fee waivers exist for demonstrated financial need but are rarely granted to international applicants. Pay via international credit card on the application portal at submission.

Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for BYU?

Ans. Major Indian lenders including HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank, and Avanse recognise BYU as a listed US university and finance up to INR 60 lakh for PG and INR 40 lakh for UG on collateral-backed loans. Non-collateral loans through Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing are available for Marriott MBA and STEM MS admits. Interest rates in the Indian market range from 9.5% to 12% for secured loans.

Ques. Is the Ecclesiastical Endorsement required for non-LDS Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes, every BYU applicant must obtain an Ecclesiastical Endorsement, regardless of faith. Non-LDS Indian applicants get the endorsement through a Church leader, priest, imam, or clergy member of their own faith, who confirms the applicant will follow the BYU Honor Code. The endorsement is valid for 12 months and must be renewed annually for continued enrolment.

Ques. What documents do Indian applicants need for I-20 issuance at BYU?

Ans. After academic admission, BYU issues Form I-20 once the student uploads a bank statement showing at least USD 32,000 (INR 30.6 lakh) available funds for one year, a signed sponsor affidavit if funded by parents, and a passport bio-page copy. The I-20 typically arrives 3 to 6 weeks after submission, and Indian applicants then book the F-1 visa interview at the nearest US Consulate (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad).

Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for BYU graduates?

Ans. F-1 graduates from BYU’s STEM-designated master’s programmes (Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, and Mechanical Engineering) qualify for 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving a total of 36 months of US work eligibility. Non-STEM programmes such as MBA and MPA are limited to the standard 12 months of OPT after graduation.

Ques. Can Indian applicants apply to BYU without an English test if they studied in English?

Ans. BYU may waive the English proficiency test if the applicant completed a bachelor’s degree with English as the sole medium of instruction, backed by an official medium-of-instruction certificate from the awarding university. CBSE and ICSE Class 12 alone do not qualify for a waiver at the undergraduate level. Applicants should request the waiver in writing at application submission and attach the university-issued MOI certificate.

Overview

Growing up, I watched as my older siblings, as well as their friends, went off to college, many to BYU. When they came home for breaks I heard stories of professors who cared about their students and their work as well as peers who had similar goals as them. These qualities are what made me interested in attending BYU. The application process was fairly simple - a single application and application fee that allowed you to send your answers to all 3 of BYU campuses at once. I chose to attend BYU Provo, the most competitive of all 3 campuses, due largely to the quality of their nursing program and the academic rigor they were known for. As I only applied to 4 schools total - the others being BYU Idaho, University of Utah, and Utah State - I was relieved to have gotten in. Besides their academic programs, a huge draw to BYU for me was their low price tuition and the scholarship package I was offered as a result of my ACT score, class rank, and GPA. I was accepted with a 34 ACT score, and a 4.0 GPA, although I credit my acceptance more heavily to my variety of extracurriculars including leadership positions and volunteer experience.

Fees

The tuition fee is $2800 per semester. I received a private scholarship for academic excellence for $2000 each semester. I received loans through the government directly through FASFA for $1800 a semester. There are a variety of scholarships available and the student financial aid office can work with students to assist in finding other scholarships outside of the school.

Overview

It was the Least expensive school that I could go too in Utah. That is why I decided to go to Brigham Young University. They also are a good school that is respected by others. They have good programs.

Fees

There is the tuition fee and then the cost of all your books. They can easily be paid for online. Also, a few to tell them where you live off campus.

Overview

I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints so the tuition is less for me, which is great because college is expensive!! I also like that the environment is really Christian and there isn't any drinking or crazy partying.

Fees

Tuition is super affordable which is one of the appeals of this university. I haven't encountered additional fees when it comes to classes but that doesn't mean they aren't there. Tests are charged a late fee on the last day that they are open and some major admittance tests require fees.

I am Russian girl of 14 years old living in Istanbul (Turkey) at the moment. I suppose to graduate from the high school next year as far as I am smart/gifted teenager and twice skipped the grades (6-7,8-9) in Russian middle school . Is it possible for me to join BYU at 15 years old?

Students applying for admission at Brigham Young University must be 17 years of age by the first day of class. Considering the intellectual, social, and emotional maturity required of university students, the university does not offer admission to students younger than 17 years.
