Undergraduate Programme Cost Range at NC State 2027

Undergraduate non-resident tuition and fees for 2026-2027 sit in the USD 33,000 to 36,000 range per year (confirm on the official fee schedule). Four-year total costs land between INR 127 lakh and INR 138 lakh across engineering, sciences and humanities. Most Indian first-year applicants target Engineering, Computer Science and Business majors.

Insider note: Indian students overwhelmingly pick the 10-month MS Analytics cohort and MS Computer Science for the balance of shorter payback and access to Research Triangle recruiters, though MS Electrical Engineering remains the largest single-department Indian enrolment on campus.

North Carolina State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

North Carolina State University admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on a four-year bachelor degree and a credential evaluation for three-year Indian degrees. Test-score minimums are set by the Graduate School and cannot be waived at the department level.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor degree from a recognised Indian university with minimum 60% aggregate or CGPA 6.0/10 for admission consideration; competitive applicants hold 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 (recommended).
  • English Proficiency: Accepted tests include TOEFL iBT (minimum 80 on the legacy 0-120 scale for tests taken before January 21, 2026, or minimum 4 on the new 1-6 scale for tests taken after), IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.5 in each component, and Duolingo English Test 110 overall with 110 in each subscore.
  • Credential Evaluation: WES, ECE or another NACES-member evaluation is required for three-year Indian bachelor degrees; four-year degrees benefit from evaluation but may submit official transcripts directly.
  • Standardised Tests: GRE is optional for most MS programmes but required for MS Analytics; the Poole MBA accepts GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment.

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 completion with 80% to 90% aggregate for competitive engineering and CS majors (recommended); minimum 70% for humanities and general majors.
  • English Proficiency: TOEFL iBT 85 or IELTS 6.5 for direct admission, with pathway options for scores slightly below.

Key insight: NC State does not publish an automatic IELTS or TOEFL waiver for Indian applicants, but graduates of Indian universities where instruction is documented as fully in English can request a departmental waiver with a Registrar letter, decided by the Graduate School.

North Carolina State University Acceptance Rate 2027

North Carolina State University acceptance rate stands at 39.55% across undergraduate admissions, placing it in the moderately selective band among US public research universities. Graduate acceptance rates vary sharply by department and are not published centrally by the Graduate School.

LevelAcceptance RateApplicant Notes
Undergraduate (Overall)39.55%First-year international admission is more selective than in-state
MS Computer Science15% to 25% (estimated)Among the most competitive departments for Indian applicants
MS Analytics (IAA)Around 20% (estimated)Cohort capped at 125 students per year
Poole MBA35% to 45% (estimated)Rolling admissions across multiple rounds

Rejection is heavier for CS and Analytics than for other Master’s departments, and profile fit with the department’s research areas matters more than absolute grades. Indian applicants with under 65% aggregate should target adjacent departments rather than reapplying to CS.

Reality check: The 39.55% headline rate reflects undergraduate admissions and is not a reliable proxy for Indian MS applicants, where competitive graduate departments run selection rates well below the university-wide figure.

North Carolina State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

North Carolina State University’s main Raleigh campus spans 2,100 acres across North Campus, Central Campus and Centennial Campus, home to the Hunt Library and the university’s public-private research park.

  • Location and transport: Raleigh sits 30 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport; Wolfline shuttles and GoRaleigh buses cover campus and the city with free rides for students.
  • Housing: On-campus graduate housing at Wolf Village and E.S. King Village offers guaranteed placement for the first year; roughly 35% of graduate students live on campus in the first year.
  • Notable facility: Centennial Campus hosts more than 70 industry and government tenants including SAS, Eastman and the US Department of Agriculture, giving students in-campus research and internship access.
  • Indian community: The India Student Association at NC State runs Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events, and Hillsborough Street carries multiple Indian grocery stores and restaurants including Udupi Cafe and Cinnaholic.

What Indian students say: Raleigh weather and cost of living are the two most-cited positives; the flat, cycle-friendly Centennial Campus and the strong Wolfpack alumni network in Charlotte and Atlanta make job hunts smoother than at colder-belt schools.

QS Business and Management 2026 lists Poole at #101 globally, and Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 places NC State Engineering at #85 globally. [Source: QS, THE, US News, ARWU, Collegedunia Study Abroad]

Key insight: For Indian applicants, ARWU subject strength in EEE and Statistics matters more than the QS World slip; US employers weigh departmental research citations and STEM OPT-eligible degree recognition ahead of composite rank movements.

NC State vs Peer Universities

NC State’s closest peers are large US public research universities in the Southeast and Midwest with land-grant missions and strong STEM depth. The comparison below uses two-year non-resident PG tuition as the cost anchor.

UniversityStateApprox 2-Year Non-Resident PG Cost (USD)Cost (INR)Notable Strength
North Carolina State UniversityNorth Carolina70,003 to 101,65367.1 to 97.5 lakhResearch Triangle location; ARWU top-10 in EEE
Purdue UniversityIndiana60,000 to 90,000 (estimated)57.5 to 86.3 lakhAerospace, ECE and CS depth
Virginia TechVirginia65,000 to 85,000 (estimated)62.3 to 81.5 lakhEngineering with strong DC-Beltway placements

University of FloridaFlorida60,000 to 85,000 (estimated)57.5 to 81.5 lakhBroad public research base with medical school

NC State stands out through the Research Triangle recruiter density and ARWU subject rankings in EEE, Statistics and Textile Science that outrank several higher-QS peers. Indian applicants targeting Analytics, EEE and Textiles get better research-lab access here than at comparable-cost publics; for MBA in USA aspirants Poole ranks below Purdue Krannert and Texas A&M Mays on brand pull.

North Carolina State University fits an Indian student targeting a mid-Atlantic STEM MS with strong assistantship odds and a total investment of INR 60 to 75 lakh, offset by a Class-of-2024 MBA median of USD 101,841 (INR 97.7 lakh) and STEM OPT-backed US work rights. The Research Triangle recruiter density around Centennial Campus is the single strongest Indian-specific advantage for job outcomes.

It is not the right fit for applicants chasing top-100 QS brand pull for family or employer signalling in India, nor for candidates with under 60% aggregate who will find the CS and Analytics departments too selective. Purdue University or Virginia Tech serve those goals better for similar total cost.

NC State FAQs

Ques. What programs are offered at North Carolina State University for Indian students?

Ans. North Carolina State University offers over 300 English-taught programmes across 12 colleges. Indian students most commonly enrol in MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Analytics and the Poole MBA. The Institute for Advanced Analytics runs the flagship 10-month MSA cohort, and cross-registration with Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill is available through the Research Triangle consortium for graduate electives.

Ques. How much does an MS degree at NC State cost for Indian applicants?

Ans. An MS at NC State costs USD 35,001 to USD 50,826 per year in tuition and fees for non-resident international students, plus a mandatory USD 4,733 annual health insurance charge. Two-year total costs typically fall between INR 67 lakh and INR 98 lakh depending on the programme, and MS Analytics runs as a 10-month cohort at INR 43 lakh total.

Ques. Can Indian students with a 3-year bachelor degree apply to NC State?

Ans. Yes, but Indian applicants with a three-year bachelor degree must submit a credential evaluation from WES, ECE or another NACES member. NC State admits three-year degrees from Bologna Process countries directly, and treats other three-year degrees through the evaluation route. Applicants should start the evaluation 8 to 10 weeks before the department deadline to avoid processing delays.

Ques. Does North Carolina State University require GRE for graduate admission?

Ans. NC State makes GRE optional for most Master’s programmes, though the Institute for Advanced Analytics still requires GRE scores for MSA candidates. PhD programmes typically list GRE as recommended but not mandatory, and the Poole MBA accepts GMAT, GRE or the Executive Assessment. Indian applicants with strong quantitative backgrounds should still consider submitting GRE to strengthen assistantship candidacy.

Ques. Is the IELTS waiver available at NC State for Indian applicants?

Ans. NC State does not publish an automatic IELTS waiver for Indian applicants, though degree completion at an English-medium institution may be considered case by case. Applicants from Indian universities where instruction is fully in English can request a waiver through their department, providing a Registrar letter and course-language documentation. The Graduate School decides waivers, not individual departments.

Ques. How can Indian students get financial aid at North Carolina State University?

Ans. Indian students can access graduate assistantships that provide a USD 15,000 stipend for MS candidates and USD 20,000 for PhD candidates plus full tuition and health coverage. Federal aid remains limited to US citizens.

Ques. Are on-campus jobs available for Indian students at NC State?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at NC State may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during term and 40 hours during breaks without additional authorisation. Common on-campus roles include Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, library and dining services positions. Assistantship jobs tied to a department carry priority hiring and are usually announced through departmental listservs each semester before hire.

Ques. What is the OPT and STEM OPT pathway for North Carolina State University graduates?

Ans. Graduates of North Carolina State University receive 12 months of Optional Practical Training under standard F-1 rules and an additional 24 months of STEM OPT for degrees on the USCIS STEM designated list, giving 36 months total US work rights. Popular Indian-student programmes including Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Analytics all qualify for the STEM OPT extension.

  • The campus spans over 1,500 acres of land and is a land-grant university with more than 30 campuses. We have some of the best libraries in the world, including the Hunt Library, which ranks in the top 10 globally.
  • For sports, students have free access to the impressive Carmichael Gym. In terms of medical facilities, there is a clinic located on campus that is easily accessible to students. Additionally, there are numerous clubs, both technical and non-technical, that students can join. There are also many volunteering opportunities available.

  • Campus life is amazing; it's a really big campus (3000 sq meters) with a 5-floor independent library building and easy to get on-campus jobs

Fees

  • USD 18000/semester and around 700 for living expenses

  • Main campus, centennial campus, north campus (the rest I don't know; available online)
  • 2 libraries, AMAZING gym, health center, cafes, legal services office, mental health support.
  • GSA Social, Midnight howl run, Maitri indian student association, masquerade ball, diwali celebrations. Many sports clubs are available: boating, fencing, martial arts, boxing, etc. kayaks and camping gear are also available for rent.

Fees

  • It depends on credits. each course is 3 credits (except for the orientation course, which is 1 credit). i have taken 10 credits for the first semester, 9 credits for the second, 9 for the third and 3 credits for the last semester. That means 3 courses plus a compulsory orientation course for the first semester, 3 courses for the second semester, 3 courses for the third semester, and 1 course for the last semester. this is billed as such: https://studentservices.ncsu.edu/finances/tuition-and-fees/tuition-and-fee-rates/graduate-students/ so for me it was 21,266.25 USD for the first three semesters and 7,088.76 USD for the last semester, according to the credits I took (note credits == hours).
  • Health insurance cost is on top of tuition fees, which i dont remember exactly right now. but you can buy a cheaper health insurance from india and use that to waive that fee (which is what i did)
  • Semester-wise: $900 a month: $625 rent (private room + private bath), $150 utilities (electricity, water, Wi-Fi, phone bill, etc.) + $125 groceries (cheaper for me since I get free food at the place I work part-time on campus).

  • We have 4 campuses for my college. The main ones are the main campus and centennial for engineering students.
  • Both of these have library, main campus has sports, medical, music services. The gym is one of the biggest I have ever seen across USA.
  • The college provides good awareness of wellness and recreation. The main campus festivals are packapalooza, which is a shopping fest, moonlight howl and run, which is a midnight running fest, and a lot more are there.

Fees

  • It is credit based and 10+ credit means same fees for all. For all masters student the fee structure is 20k USD per semester excluding housing. There are no other charges. Insurance isn't mandatory.
  • The fee was semester wise, and in last semester it was 7k USD. Monthly expenses around 700 USD if private else 500 if shared inclusive of food, water electricity, rent. Free transportation.

  • NC State University is spread across a massive 2,000-acre area. Undergraduate classes are mostly on the main campus, while master’s students attend classes on the Centennial Campus. Campus is 4 miles from downtown Raleigh. The university has large libraries, great sports facilities with gyms, fields, and courts, and a student health centre offering medical care, counselling, and free primary care.
  • Big events happen a lot. Packapalooza is fun, with food, music, and free goodies like T-shirts. Football games are crazy exciting; everyone loves them. Moonlight Run is a night run event with a really cool vibe. Hillsborough Street is where most fun stuff happens, like fireworks and music nights.
  • Clubs and groups are everywhere. Sports, tech, or cultural activities—you'll find something. Events bring people together, and it’s easy to join in and make friends. Life here isn’t just about studying; it’s got something for everyone.

Fees

  • The fee structure for my course is as follows:
  • The tuition fee is $20,500 per semester for 9 credits.
  • For the first three semesters, I take 9 credits each, paying $20,500 per semester.
  • In the final semester, I only need 3 credits, which costs around $7,000.
  • The total course requires 31 credits, bringing the total cost to approximately $70,000.
  • Fees are charged semester-wise, based on the number of credits taken in that semester.
  • Monthly Expenses:
    • Rent and utilities: I pay $600, which includes electricity, water, Wi-Fi, and other bills.
    • Groceries and food: Around $200.
    • Other expenses (mobile bill, miscellaneous): Around $100.
    • In total, my monthly expenses are approximately $900–$1,000, depending on spending habits.

Overview

I chose this university as being a well reputed and a state college, the fees was nominal. It is located in the RTP area, which is a growing hub for tech industries in the East coast. Weather is one other factor. Placements are pretty good. Coursework is of industry interest and professors are well known.
