North Carolina State University admissions run on a program-by-program basis for Indian applicants, with Fall 2027 as the primary intake and Spring 2027 available for a smaller set of graduate programs. Undergraduate first-years need Class XII at 65% or higher with strong Math and Science, and master’s applicants need a Bachelor’s from an accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA equivalent (65 to 70%).

  • Next live deadline (Fall 2027 primary intake): Undergraduate Early Action closes 1 November 2026 via the Common Application.
  • Base tuition: USD 34,960.50 (INR 33.39 Lakhs) per year for non-resident undergraduates and USD 35,001.50 (INR 33.43 Lakhs) per year for on-campus graduate students; application fee is USD 100 (INR 9,551) for undergraduate and USD 95 (INR 9,074) for graduate.
  • Eligibility floor: UG applicants need Class XII at 65% or higher with prerequisite subjects; PG applicants need a Bachelor’s from an accredited university plus IELTS 6.5 overall (with 6.5 in each band) or TOEFL iBT 80.
  • Acceptance rate: 39.55% institution-wide, competitive within engineering and computer science majors.

Popular routes for Indian students include the MS in Computer Science, MS in Electrical Engineering, MS in Analytics, and the Jenkins MBA at the Poole College of Management, with strong Indian community feedback on assistantship access and Raleigh’s Research Triangle placement pipeline.

Admission Status: Open. The primary Fall 2027 intake is accepting applications. The Common Application for the 2026-2027 cycle opened 1 August 2026, so undergraduate Early Action (deadline 1 November 2026) is live now with a USD 100 application fee. Graduate applications for Fall 2027 close 1 March 2027 with a USD 95 fee, and many departmental deadlines run earlier than the Graduate School date.

North Carolina State University Application Deadlines

NC State runs a Fall-primary calendar for Indian applicants, with a smaller Spring window at graduate level. The dates below come from the official Graduate School application deadlines page and the undergraduate admissions site, and the Fall 2027 intake carries the widest program coverage, so most Indian applicants target it. Departments frequently publish earlier priority deadlines than the central Graduate School date, so scholarship-seekers should apply well before the posted cutoff.

NC State’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall 2027 (August start), where every college and department opens admissions.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 95.51, the live rate on 13 August 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

Common Application submissions through the platform still route to NC State’s own USD 100 fee, since NC State does not accept application fee waivers. The Coalition on Scoir platform is a parallel undergraduate route with identical deadlines, though the Common App remains the dominant path for Indian applicants.

NC State Eligibility for Indian Students

Academic eligibility at NC State runs on standard US thresholds translated for Indian grading. All figures below come from the NC State international admissions handbook and the undergraduate international applicants page, with English-test floors verified against the dedicated language-requirements section.

  • UG general entry: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE, or state board) with 65% or higher, prerequisite Math and Science for engineering and computing majors.
  • PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s from an accredited university with a minimum 3.0 GPA on 4.0 (65 to 70% in Indian marking).
  • Three-year Bachelor’s: Accepted only from Bologna Process institutions, so Indian three-year BA or BSc holders typically need a WES or ECE credential evaluation and often a Master’s before PhD entry.
  • English proficiency (all international applicants): Test scores are mandatory unless a listed waiver applies.

Accepted English Tests and Minimums

Test UG Minimum Graduate Minimum
IELTS Academic 6.5 overall 6.5 overall (6.5 per band)
TOEFL iBT (post 21 Jan 2026 format) 4.5 4 overall (4 per section)
TOEFL iBT (pre 21 Jan 2026 format) 80 80 overall (18 per section)
Duolingo English Test 110 110 overall (110 per section)
PTE Academic 58 Not officially posted

NC State IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

NC State does not grant a blanket medium-of-instruction waiver for Indian applicants, since India is not listed among the countries where English is the official first language of instruction. Two waiver pathways remain open. First, if you have completed at least one year of full-time degree study at a regionally accredited US four-year college with a 3.0 GPA, English testing is waived. Second, some departments accept a conditional admission with a pathway program. Every other Indian applicant must submit a valid IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or PTE score dated within the last 24 months.

Insider note: IELTS 6.5 is the floor, but competitive MS Computer Science and Analytics admits typically show 7.0 or higher, and teaching assistantships require 7.0 in Speaking on IELTS.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official NC State international admissions page for your chosen program before applying.

NC State PG Programs and English Scores

Master’s programs at NC State cluster heavily in engineering, computing, and analytics, which are also the most popular routes for Indian students. Base tuition sits at USD 35,001.50 (INR 33.43 Lakhs) per academic year for non-resident on-campus graduate students, and professional programs like MBA and MS Analytics carry a program-specific premium on top. Full course-level fees appear in the course-wise fees breakdown for each master’s listing.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
MS Computer Science 2 years Bachelor’s in CS or related with 3.0 GPA IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
MS Electrical Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in EE or ECE with 3.0 GPA IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
MS Computer Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in CS, ECE, or EE with 3.0 GPA IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
MS Industrial Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in Engineering with 3.0 GPA IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
MS Statistics 2 years Bachelor’s with strong Math and Statistics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80
Master of Science in Analytics (MSA) 10 months Bachelor’s plus quantitative coursework IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80

MS Textile Engineering 2 years Bachelor’s in a related engineering field IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 80

Planning note: The MS in Analytics at the Institute for Advanced Analytics runs one intake per year starting July and closes admissions early, typically by December of the prior year. Treat it as a separate calendar from Graduate School dates.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official NC State page for your chosen program before applying.

North Carolina State University UG Programs

Undergraduate admission is direct-entry into a chosen major, with engineering and business as competitive tracks. Non-resident undergraduate base tuition is USD 34,960.50 (INR 33.39 Lakhs) per year, and Indian applicants apply through the Common Application or Coalition on Scoir. First-year engineering admits enter through the College of Engineering’s First Year Engineering program before selecting a specific major in Year 2.

Programme Duration Minimum Eligibility English Req. Min.
BS Computer Science 4 years Class XII at 65% with Mathematics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 4.5
First Year Engineering (BS) 4 years Class XII at 65% with Math and Physics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 4.5
BS Business Administration (Poole) 4 years Class XII at 65% IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 4.5
BS Statistics 4 years Class XII at 70% with Mathematics IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 4.5
BS Textile Engineering 4 years Class XII at 65% with Math and Science IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 4.5

Indian applicants whose Class XII scores are borderline may enter under Conditional Admission, which requires only TOEFL iBT 3 or IELTS 5.0 but adds an intensive English pathway before degree coursework begins. Regular Decision remains the safer route for applicants targeting engineering, since Early Action seats fill fastest.

NC State Jenkins MBA Rounds and Requirements

The Jenkins MBA at Poole College of Management runs a Full-Time program plus a Professional Online MBA, both starting in Fall (August). Jenkins waives GMAT and GRE by default, and Indian applicants are evaluated on academics, work experience, video essays, and interview performance. The Full-Time program is the standard route for Indian students seeking on-campus placement and STEM OPT extension.

Jenkins Full-Time MBA Fall 2027 Rounds

Round Application Deadline Decision Notification
One Day to MBA 15 September 2026 9 October 2026
Round 1 1 November 2026 15 December 2026
Round 2 (International priority) 15 January 2027 1 March 2027
Round 3 15 April 2027 15 May 2027

Jenkins MBA Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Degree: Four-year Bachelor’s from an accredited university.
  • Work experience: Preferred 2 years or more of professional experience for Full-Time MBA, with a strong preference for career switchers with demonstrated leadership.
  • GMAT/GRE: Optional, no minimum; strong scores strengthen scholarship consideration.
  • Interview: Required and offered by invitation after initial screening; the One Day to MBA route delivers a decision within 24 hours after the on-campus or virtual interview.
  • English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 80 for international applicants.
  • Application fee: USD 95 (INR 9,074), waived for One Day to MBA participants and US military veterans.

Insider note: Indian applicants targeting scholarships should aim for Round 1 (1 November 2026), since Jenkins allocates most merit-based aid before Round 2. Round 3 is functionally domestic-first and rarely a strong bet for F-1 applicants.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official NC State Jenkins MBA page before applying.

NC State PhD Admissions and Funding

Doctoral admissions at NC State are department-driven, and funding is the deciding factor for most Indian applicants. Applications sit inside the Graduate School portal but every PhD program requires a faculty match, either through a listed advisor or a research statement that names potential supervisors. Fall is the dominant intake, with a small handful of departments accepting Spring PhD starts.

NC State PhD Funding and Assistantships

PhD assistantships at NC State fall under the Graduate Student Support Plan (GSSP), which pays a minimum stipend of USD 20,000 (INR 19.10 Lakhs) per academic year for the 2026-2027 cycle plus a full tuition remission and health insurance. Actual stipends in Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics run higher, typically USD 28,500 to USD 33,000 (INR 27.22 Lakhs to INR 31.52 Lakhs) per year, based on Research Assistant or Teaching Assistant appointments. Detailed departmental funding sits in the funding for Indian students section.

NC State PhD Application Timeline

  • December 2026 to January 2027: Most engineering, computing, and sciences PhD programs close (department-specific dates).
  • 1 March 2027: Graduate School central deadline for Fall 2027 PhD applicants.
  • February to April 2027: Faculty interviews, funding decisions, and I-20 issuance.

Planning note: Emailing 3 to 5 faculty in September 2026, before submitting, is standard practice for STEM PhDs at NC State. Indian applicants who skip pre-application outreach rarely secure Research Assistantships in the first round.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official NC State page for your chosen PhD program before applying.

North Carolina State University Application Process

The application flow differs by level. Undergraduate applicants go through the Common Application (which opened for the 2026-2027 cycle on 1 August 2026) or Coalition on Scoir, while graduate applicants use NC State’s own Graduate School portal. Every step below is one that Indian applicants complete themselves rather than through a consultant.

  1. Choose your platform (UG only). Register on the Common Application or Coalition on Scoir. Both are equally weighted by NC State. Graduate applicants create an account on the Graduate School portal instead.
  2. Complete the application. Fill in personal, academic, and activities sections. UG applicants write the Common App personal essay plus any NC State supplement.
  3. Upload documents. Add unofficial transcripts, standardised test reports, and a statement of purpose (graduate applicants).
  4. Arrange recommendations. Undergraduate needs one counsellor plus one teacher recommendation; graduate requires three academic or professional referees who submit online.
  5. Submit English test scores. Send official IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or PTE scores directly to NC State.
  6. Pay the application fee. Pay the application fee of USD 100 (INR 9,551) for undergraduate or USD 95 (INR 9,074) for graduate through the platform. NC State does not accept fee waivers for international applicants.
  7. Track decisions and financial documentation. Log into the applicant portal to see status changes and, upon admission, upload the Certificate of Financial Responsibility to trigger the I-20.

NC State Admission Decisions Timeline

Undergraduate Early Action decisions release by 31 January 2027, and Regular Decision decisions by 1 April 2027. Graduate decisions are department-driven and typically release between February and April 2027. Admitted students have until 1 May 2027 to accept and pay the enrollment deposit. Deferrals are considered case-by-case and are more common for medical or visa delays than personal preference.

NC State Documents Required for Indian Students

The document set below is paperwork only. Academic thresholds and English-test floors are covered separately under Eligibility. All foreign-language documents need certified English translations from the issuing institution or an approved translator, and graduate transcripts require a WES or ECE credential evaluation on request.

  • Passport bio page: Valid for at least six months beyond intended entry.
  • Academic transcripts: Class X, Class XII (UG), and all Bachelor’s or Master’s marksheets and degree certificates (PG).
  • Statement of Purpose: 500 to 1,000 words, program-specific.
  • Letters of Recommendation: One counsellor plus one teacher (UG); three academic or professional referees (PG).
  • Resume or CV: Required for graduate and MBA applicants.
  • English test score report: Sent directly from the testing agency.
  • Certificate of Financial Responsibility: Bank statement or affidavit covering the full first year of study.
  • Digital photograph: Passport-style for the student record and I-20 processing.
  • Work experience letter: MBA and select master’s applicants.
  • Video essay: Jenkins MBA requires two short video responses.

NC State Acceptance Rate for Indian Applicants

NC State publishes an institution-wide acceptance rate of 39.55%, which places it in the moderately selective band for large US public research universities. This is the base figure across all applicants, not an Indian-student-only number, and departmental selectivity varies sharply.

Program-Level Selectivity

Engineering, Computer Science, and MS Analytics run tighter admit rates than the institutional average, often below 25% for Indian applicants due to volume. Business Administration, Textiles, and Agriculture see higher admit rates. NC State’s ranking band in QS World and Times Higher Education helps explain the applicant concentration in engineering.

What Strengthens an Indian Application

Class XII marks above 80%, IELTS 7.0 or higher, research or internship experience, and a specific statement of purpose that names NC State faculty by area consistently improve admission odds. Generic SOPs and low quantitative test scores are the most common reasons Indian MS applicants get held or waitlisted.

Insider note: NC State does not publish separate acceptance rates by country of citizenship, so the 39.55% figure is the anchor. Indian applicant admit rates for CS and Analytics track well below that number in most recent cohorts.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process

Admitted students enter the United States on the F-1 student visa. NC State issues the Form I-20 through the Office of International Services once the admission offer is accepted and financial documentation is verified. Indian applicants then apply for the F-1 stamp through the US Embassy or Consulate.

The core steps are: pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,429), complete the DS-160 form online, book a visa interview slot at the nearest US consulate (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad), pay the USD 185 (INR 17,669) visa fee, and attend the interview with the I-20, admission letter, financial proof (bank statements or education loan sanction covering at least the first year of study), academic records, and passport.

2026 update: Indian applicants should book F-1 slots as soon as the I-20 is in hand, since Delhi and Mumbai wait times have run 30 to 60 days for August intakes. NC State’s Office of International Services runs mandatory pre-arrival orientation in June and July.

Tips and Application Checklist for North Carolina State University

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at NC State across recent Fall intakes. They cover both decision-making and timeline sequencing.

  • Target the earliest round you can meet. Early Action (UG) and Round 1 (MBA) get the strongest scholarship and assistantship pools.
  • Book IELTS or TOEFL by August 2026. Retakes cost 2 to 3 weeks; do not leave the test to the final month.
  • Email PhD advisors in September 2026. Assistantship-backed offers usually route through a specific faculty member.
  • Order WES or ECE evaluations in October 2026. These can take 4 to 6 weeks and are non-negotiable for three-year Bachelor’s holders.
  • Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline. Indian universities often batch-issue certified transcripts monthly.
  • Line up loan sanctions before I-20 upload. The Certificate of Financial Responsibility must show liquid funds or a sanctioned loan.
  • Keep SOPs program-specific. Rewrite the second half for each NC State program, since generic SOPs are the top reason Indian MS applicants are waitlisted.
  • Book F-1 visa slot the day the I-20 arrives. Slot availability is the tightest bottleneck for Fall arrivals.

NC State’s student reviews from Indian applicants provide first-hand context on how these steps play out in practice.

NC State is a strong Fall-focused, engineering-heavy option for Indian students, and the 2026-2027 cycle is live now with the Common Application open since 1 August 2026. Applicants who move on Early Action (UG) or MBA Round 1 by 1 November 2026, and graduate applicants who file well before 1 March 2027, sit in the strongest position for admission and funding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. When does the NC State application open for Fall 2027?

Ans. The Common Application for Fall 2027 undergraduate entry opened on 1 August 2026. Graduate applications open on a rolling basis from September 2026, with the central Graduate School deadline of 1 March 2027 (many departments close earlier).

Ques. Is IELTS or TOEFL mandatory for Indian applicants?

Ans. Yes. India is not on NC State’s English-waiver list, so every Indian applicant must submit IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80 (graduate) or 4.5 in the new-format iBT (undergraduate), Duolingo 110, or PTE 58, unless they have completed one year of full-time degree study at a US accredited university.

Ques. What is the NC State acceptance rate?

Ans. The institution-wide acceptance rate is 39.55%. Selective programs like MS Computer Science and MS Analytics run tighter, and the Jenkins Full-Time MBA is competitive within a smaller applicant pool.

Ques. Is GMAT or GRE required for the Jenkins MBA or MS programs?

Ans. Jenkins MBA has waived GMAT and GRE as mandatory requirements. MS program policies vary by department; several engineering and computing MS programs have made the GRE optional, but strong scores still strengthen an application, especially for assistantship consideration.

Ques. How much is the NC State application fee for Indian students?

Ans. Undergraduate applications cost USD 100 (INR 9,551), and graduate applications cost USD 95 (INR 9,074). NC State does not grant application fee waivers to international applicants.

Ques. Does NC State accept three-year Indian Bachelor’s degrees for graduate admission?

Ans. Only three-year degrees from Bologna Process countries are accepted directly. Indian applicants with a three-year BA or BSc typically need a WES or ECE credential evaluation, and many programs prefer a completed Master’s before PhD admission.

Ques. How competitive is Early Action versus Regular Decision at NC State?

Ans. Early Action (deadline 1 November 2026) offers the strongest chance for high-demand majors like Computer Science and Engineering, since seats fill before Regular Decision (15 January 2027). Both routes are non-binding.

Ques. What English score do I need for a teaching assistantship at NC State?

Ans. Teaching assistantships require higher Speaking sub-scores: IELTS Speaking 7.0, TOEFL Speaking 23 (or 26 for TAs who deliver lectures), or Duolingo Conversation 125.

Ques. When will I receive an admission decision from NC State?

Ans. Undergraduate Early Action decisions release by 31 January 2027, Regular Decision by 1 April 2027. Graduate decisions are department-specific and typically release between February and April 2027. MBA Round 2 decisions release by 1 March 2027.

Ques. Is NC State a STEM-designated university for OPT extension?

Ans. NC State’s engineering, computing, analytics, and most sciences master’s and PhD programs are STEM-designated, which qualifies graduates for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the standard 12-month OPT.

Ques. What financial proof does NC State require for the I-20?

Ans. Admitted students must submit a Certificate of Financial Responsibility covering at least the first year of tuition, fees, and living costs. Sanctioned education loans, bank statements, or scholarship award letters are accepted, and the document is uploaded through the applicant portal after admission.

Ques. Can I defer my NC State admission for one semester?

Ans. Deferrals are reviewed case-by-case and are typically granted for medical, visa, or family reasons rather than personal choice. Indian applicants facing visa slot delays should contact NC State’s Office of International Services immediately upon receiving the I-20.

Scholarship

  • No, there are no scholarships except for PhD students. I personally don't know anyone with a scholarship.
  • It might be worth checking with the OIS team of NCSU or even admissions team so that we can get a better picture of how the scholarship programme works.
  • That said, the PhD students get their entire fee waived off. This is also for graduate TAs.

Scholarship

  • I didn’t receive any scholarships during my course.
  • However, one of my friends received a GSSP (Graduate Student Support Plan). Under this, a professor funds your education for that semester, and in return, the student works as a research assistant for them.
  • The university doesn’t offer scholarships specifically for international students. Most financial aid opportunities for international students come through assistantships or external funding.

Overview

I chose this university as being a well reputed and a state college, the fees was nominal. It is located in the RTP area, which is a growing hub for tech industries in the East coast. Weather is one other factor. Placements are pretty good. Coursework is of industry interest and professors are well known.
