USA Visa and Post-Study Work for Computer Science 2027
The F-1 student visa is the standard pathway for international students pursuing degrees in the United States. After graduation, Computer Science graduates are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), a work authorisation that allows 12 months of employment for non-STEM fields and up to 36 months for STEM-designated fields like Computer Science.
- F-1 visa duration: Valid for the entire duration of your programme plus 60 days of grace period after degree completion. No annual renewal required.
- Optional Practical Training (OPT): Computer Science qualifies as STEM; graduates receive 12 months standard OPT plus 24 months STEM extension, totalling three years of post-study employment authorisation.
- H-1B visa pathway: After OPT expiration, employers can sponsor H-1B visa (specialty occupation work permit). Salary threshold is USD 60,000 minimum. Annual lottery-based selection; multiple attempts across three OPT years increase approval odds.
- Permanent Residency: PR is achievable through employment-based categories (EB2 or EB3) after H-1B sponsorship; typical timeline is five to seven years from graduation to Green Card approval.
Visa reality: F-1 to Green Card pathway is well-established for CS graduates with decent GPAs; 60–70% of international cohorts eventually secure permanent residency. Spousal visa (F-2) is allowed; dependents under 21 are included.

FAQs
Ques. Can international students on F-1 visa work off-campus while studying Computer Science at UT Dallas?
Ans. On-campus work is permitted up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and full-time during breaks without additional authorization. Off-campus employment is restricted during studies but becomes fully available during the 12-month Optional Practical Training (OPT) period after graduation. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) internships, when required by the curriculum, do not count against your OPT timeline.
Ques. Does UT Dallas Computer Science programme require GMAT or GRE for undergraduate admission?
Ans. No. The undergraduate Bachelor of Science programme requires SAT or ACT standardised test scores for admission but does not require GMAT or GRE (those are graduate-level tests). If your high school did not administer SAT or ACT, UT Dallas may request alternative evidence of academic readiness through IB, A-levels, or other nationally recognised secondary examinations.
Ques. How much can Indian students expect to earn after completing a Computer Science degree from UT Dallas?
Ans. Average starting salary for BS Computer Science graduates is USD 110,000 (INR 1.05 Crores) gross annually. Top performers (top 10–15%) earn USD 100,000 to USD 150,000 base salary plus signing bonuses (USD 30,000 to USD 70,000) and equity packages. After federal and FICA taxes, net take-home on a USD 110,000 offer is approximately USD 93,000 (INR 88.58 Lakhs). Salaries vary by employer, role specialisation, and location within the US; Dallas and Silicon Valley roles command premium compensation.
Ques. Are scholarships guaranteed for Computer Science students at UT Dallas, and do they cover full tuition?
Ans. Merit scholarships are automatic for students meeting academic thresholds (GPA 3.0+ and SAT 1200+ or equivalent) but are not full-tuition scholarships. The UT Dallas Academic Excellence Scholarship ranges from USD 2,000 to USD 8,000 per year, reducing net tuition cost but not eliminating it entirely. A student receiving USD 6,000 annually pays USD 34,164 in tuition (versus USD 40,164 unscholarshipped). Combined with on-campus work earnings, the total cost of attendance becomes more manageable for international families.
Ques. What is the visa timeline after completing Computer Science degree at UT Dallas, and can I stay in the US to work?
Ans. Yes. After graduation, you remain in legal US status during a 60-day grace period while applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Once OPT is approved, you can work full-time for 12 months standard (Computer Science qualifies for STEM extension, adding 24 additional months, totalling 36 months). This three-year window allows you to secure H-1B sponsorship from employers, transition to permanent residency (Green Card) through employment-based categories, or pursue further education. Most UT Dallas CS graduates transition to H-1B within the OPT period.

- What I like about UTD is the strong sense of community, with diverse student organizations like ACM and MSA, and the excellent facilities, including a modern library and sports center.
- The university's strong industry connections with companies like Amazon and Verizon offer valuable career opportunities, and the supportive faculty are approachable and help students with both academics and internships.
Dislikes
- However, parking can be a challenge due to limited spaces, and some classes are quite large, which can make personalized interaction with professors more difficult.
I chose UTD because of its excellent academic reputation, especially in Computer Science, and also due to the good career opportunities that comes with it as a result of partnerships with leading companies such as Amazon and Verizon. For my career aspirations, it was essential that I am located in USA which is known as hub of technology and innovations. Equally important to my decision was the fact that family members live around and they can provide both personal help as well as academic assistance. The experience has been all encompassing - academics apart; I have taken part in such activities like ACM and playing for their cricket team. A lively student life is what the campus offers; one striking thing about it is that there exists a balance between academic pursuits and social activities.
