University of California, Riverside PhD Admissions Process
UC Riverside admits doctoral candidates directly into department PhD programmes. Most STEM PhDs run four to five years, with humanities and social sciences typically taking five to seven years. Indian applicants are considered on the same footing as domestic PhD applicants for admission, though funding and fellowship access follows a separate track.
UC Riverside PhD Application Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with a strong academic record.
- Applicants with a Master’s should hold a 3.5 GPA or higher.
- GRE is optional for most PhD programmes but recommended if you have taken it.
- Three letters of recommendation, with at least two from academic referees.
- A research-focused statement of purpose describing your intended area of study.
Funding and Fellowships
Fellowship packages are reserved for PhD applicants who apply by the January 5, 2027 deadline for the Fall 2027 cycle. Fellowship offers typically bundle tuition remission with a stipend, teaching assistantship, and research assistantship. Confirm the exact funding on your programme’s PhD page before you accept an offer.
Insider note: UCR PhD admits are typically matched with a faculty advisor whose research aligns with the applicant’s statement. Reaching out to potential advisors before you apply is a common step for Indian applicants.
Note: PhD funding, stipend levels, and fellowship criteria differ by department. Confirm current terms on the specific programme’s PhD admissions page.
University of California, Riverside Application Process Step by Step
The application flow differs by level. Undergraduate applicants apply through the shared UC Application, while graduate applicants apply through the UCR Graduate Division portal for their chosen programme. Both are fully online and do not accept paper submissions.

- Request English proficiency test scores to be sent directly from IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo to UCR.
- Pay the application fee of USD 155 (INR 14,841) for most graduate programmes, USD 180 (INR 17,235) for Anderson School programmes, or USD 80 (INR 7,660) per campus for undergraduate.
- Submit before the deadline and track your file status through the applicant dashboard.

Undergraduate decisions arrive in March 2027, with the Statement of Intent to Register due by May 1, 2027, and final transcripts by July 1, 2027. Graduate decisions roll out from March through May for Fall admits. Fellowship offers arrive first, followed by admission-only offers. Deferral policies vary by programme and require a written request through the applicant portal.
University of California, Riverside Documents Required for Indian Applicants

University of California, Riverside Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
UC Riverside’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate is around 69 percent, based on recent Common Data Set filings. The university does not publish a separate acceptance rate for international or Indian applicants. Selectivity varies sharply by programme, with popular Master’s tracks like MS Computer Engineering and MS Business Analytics running noticeably tighter admit rates than the campus average.
How Selectivity Varies by Programme
Engineering and business Master’s programmes attract heavy Indian-applicant demand, which pushes their effective admit rates lower than the institutional headline. Humanities, environmental sciences, and public health programmes typically run closer to the campus average. Your file strength matters more than the headline number.
UC Riverside Ranking Context
UCR sits in the QS World Rankings 2027 at position 398 and the THE World Rankings 2026 in the 301 to 350 band. On US News Best Colleges 2026, UCR ranks #75 nationally and #1 for social mobility. Explore its full ranking band and subject-level positions for a deeper picture.
Insider note: A Class XII score at or above 92 percent, combined with an IELTS 7.0 and a well-argued SOP, places Indian applicants comfortably above UCR’s minimum eligibility for competitive Master’s programmes.
USA F-1 Student Visa for University of California, Riverside
Every admitted international student at UC Riverside requires an F-1 non-immigrant student visa to enter the United States. UCR issues Form I-20 after you accept the offer and submit the required financial statement. The F-1 subclass is the standard route for full-time academic degree programmes.
The visa process runs through three main steps. First, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee using your I-20 SEVIS ID. Second, complete the DS-160 online non-immigrant visa application and pay the visa application fee. Third, book a visa interview at the US Consulate General in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, or Hyderabad, and carry your I-20, financial documents, passport, and academic records to the interview.
2026 update: Visa slots at Indian US Consulates typically open widest between April and July for a September start. Book the earliest available slot after receiving your I-20 to avoid an August scramble.
After arrival at UCR, complete the international student check-in with the International Students and Scholars office to activate your SEVIS record and register for classes.
Tips for University of California, Riverside Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UC Riverside over recent cycles.
- Target the fellowship deadline: Applying by January 5, 2027 puts your graduate file in the funding pool, not just the admission-only pool.
- Book IELTS well in advance: UCR needs IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.0 for graduate programmes, which is stricter than many peer campuses.
- Structure your SOP by research or career fit: Anderson and Bourns College readers weigh alignment with faculty or industry tracks heavily.
- Use CBSE or ISC percentage translations: UCR readers are familiar with Indian marking, but converting to a 4.0 GPA in your file helps.
- Line up financial documents early: The I-20 issuance depends on one full year of tuition and living costs verified through bank statements.
- Reach out to potential PhD advisors: A one-page email describing your research interest often shapes the shortlist for doctoral admits.
University of California, Riverside Admissions Checklist
The following steps cover what Indian applicants typically complete in the run-up to the Fall 2027 primary intake.
- Six months before deadline: Register for IELTS or TOEFL and target a test date at least eight weeks before the application closes.
- Four months before deadline: Request academic transcripts and evaluations from your school or university registrar.
- Three months before deadline: Approach three referees for Letters of Recommendation and share your CV and target programme details.
- Two months before deadline: Finalise your Statement of Purpose after at least two rounds of edits from a faculty member or mentor.
- One month before deadline: Complete the application, upload documents, and route the application fee payment through the portal.
- After admission: Submit the financial statement, accept the offer, and start the F-1 visa application within two weeks of receiving Form I-20.
UC Riverside admissions reward Indian applicants who file early for fellowship consideration, hit the IELTS 7.0 floor cleanly, and match their SOP to a specific programme or advisor. The Fall 2027 window is the one that matters most.

- Commuter friendly- bus service was free for students
- Spacious campus- UCR is one of the biggest UC campus
- The faculty department is great with experienced professors teaching students in ways that help students retain the knowledge.
Dislikes
- The fees for international students - even with scholarships, it was quite a hefty amount of fees as compared to the Citizens
- For me, a few of my lectures were from 7pm - 10pm so as to keep in mind the students who were also working during the day. But as the bus service was only until 9:50pm, it meant that i had to walk back home alone after 10pm and that was a bit unsafe.
Scholarship
- I did receive a scholarship; the minimum amount was $10000 for my course and the maximum was up to $80000. The scholarship criteria depended on the GRE/TOEFL scores and how early one applied for the course. Most international students received scholarships depending on when they applied as well. All of my batchmates (who were Indian) received a scholarship of up to $20k to $35k.

Likes
- Provided a lot of assistance in shaping my careers.
- The infrastructure was good.
- The accommodation facilities are good.
Dislikes
- There was nothing to dislike but I did not like the placement opportunity. The college should improve the placement opportunity.
- Teaching quality was good but needed to be improved.
Overview
I chose this university because of Course Curriculum , College Reputation , World Rank , Renowned professors and Good testimonials from Alumni. My overall experience was good at my college. I liked almost everything.
Overview
Good school, a new environment and it had the major I wanted. I also wanted to choose a school far away from home so I know what it's like to handle independence.
Scholarship
No, I have not, but some of my friends have and they had to apply through FAFSA for financial aid. For scholarships, my friends wrote essays to try to win a monetary prize that would go toward their college expenses.
