University of San Francisco Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet USF’s academic minimum plus one accepted English test, with foreign transcripts routed through a course-by-course credential evaluation.
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended) from a UGC-recognised institution; some MS tracks prefer 60%.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 85 with no section below 20 (Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing each 17+), IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or PTE 65.
- Credential verification: Course-by-course evaluation via WES or ECE; start 8 weeks before your deadline.
- Standardised tests: GRE and GMAT are optional for most MS and MBA programmes; MS Financial Analysis recommends a strong GRE score.
Undergraduate applicants need Class 12 with 70% to 85% (recommended), TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5, and SAT/ACT remain test-optional for Fall 2027 entry.
Key insight: USF graduate committees waive the IELTS/TOEFL requirement for Indian applicants who completed a full bachelor’s degree in English medium at an accredited university, but the waiver must be requested in writing with a letter from the institution’s registrar.
University of San Francisco Acceptance Rate 2027
USF’s overall undergraduate acceptance rate sits at 62% per the university’s most recent Common Data Set disclosure, making it one of the more accessible private research universities on the West Coast. Graduate acceptance rates vary by programme and are not centrally published.
Applicants who apply Early Action see acceptance rates closer to 78%, reflecting stronger academic profiles in the early pool. Cohort-limited MS programmes such as MS Data Science and MS Computer Science admit tighter than the university-wide rate suggests.
Reality check: A 62% acceptance rate makes USF one of the more accessible private US universities on Indian shortlists, but MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, and the full-time MBA run tighter admits driven by cohort caps rather than published rates.

[Source: QS, US News Best Colleges 2026, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
Key insight: A US News National #110 rank clears the informal cutoff many Indian employers and H-1B counsellors watch, though USF sits outside the top 200 in QS World; expect stronger brand recognition from the US News position than the global QS band.
University of San Francisco Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
USF Career Services runs employer relations across the Bay Area, with tech, financial services, healthcare, and consulting the four largest hiring pools for graduate students.
- Placement rate: University-wide graduate placement rate is not officially disclosed.
- Median starting salary: $75,000 to $95,000 for MS and MBA graduates in Bay Area private-tier programmes (market median, estimated).
- Top hiring sectors: technology, financial services, healthcare, consulting, life sciences; representative Bay Area recruiters engage on campus each cycle.
- Career support: Dedicated MBA and MS career coaches, industry-specific employer nights, and a Handshake job board.
- Post-study work: 12-month OPT for all F-1 graduates; a 24-month STEM extension applies to MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, MS Analytics, and MS Biotechnology graduates.
Insider note: USF’s Silicon Valley proximity gives Indian STEM graduates a strong recruiter pool, but tech hiring cycles remain competitive; a first-year summer internship is the single strongest predictor of a full-time Bay Area offer.
University of San Francisco vs Peer Universities
The peer set below compares USF against three West Coast private and public alternatives Indian students commonly weigh alongside it.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of San Francisco | #1201-1400 | #384 global; #178 USA | $52,050 (₹49.8 lakh) | Jesuit private, Nursing #22, STEM OPT tracks |
| Santa Clara University | NA | NA | $60,000 (₹57.4 lakh) (estimated) | Silicon Valley MBA network, Jesuit peer |
| Loyola Marymount University | NA | NA | $52,000 (₹49.8 lakh) (estimated) | LA Jesuit alternative, film and business focus |
| San Jose State University | NA | NA | $22,000 (₹21.0 lakh) (estimated) | Public campus, low-cost Bay Area tech pipeline |
USF stands out for its blend of Bay Area location, Jesuit social-mobility mission, and STEM-designated MS options. The price premium over public San Jose State reflects private cohort access, hands-on career services, and campus housing inside city limits.
Indian applicants who want a private Jesuit peer with a stronger tech MBA brand look at Santa Clara; those chasing a rock-bottom sticker often trade brand for San Jose State’s public rate.
USF is a strong fit for Indian students planning a two-year investment near ₹105 lakh in the Bay Area with a market-median MS starting salary around $80,000 (₹76.5 lakh). The Nursing #22 rank and STEM OPT pathway make it especially compelling for healthcare and data science applicants.
USF is not the right fit for students who need US need-based aid, want a top-100 QS global brand, or prefer the sub-$25,000 tuition of a public alternative. In that case, San Jose State University or a University of California campus fits the shortlist better.
University of San Francisco FAQs
Ques. How long does OPT last for STEM students at USF?
Ans. Standard Optional Practical Training runs 12 months for all F-1 graduates at the University of San Francisco. Graduates of STEM-designated programmes, including MS Data Science, MS Computer Science, MS Analytics, and MS Biotechnology, qualify for an additional 24-month STEM extension. Total post-study work rights reach 36 months, giving Indian students three full H-1B lottery attempts while working full-time in the Bay Area.
Ques. Does the University of San Francisco waive IELTS for Indian applicants?
Ans. Yes, graduate committees at USF waive the IELTS or TOEFL requirement for Indian applicants who completed a full bachelor’s degree taught entirely in English at an accredited university. The waiver must be requested in writing, supported by an official letter from the institution’s registrar confirming English medium of instruction. Programme-level exceptions exist, so applicants should confirm with their target department before skipping the test.
Ques. What is the application fee at USF for graduate programmes?
Ans. The University of San Francisco charges a graduate application fee of $70 for most master’s programmes, payable online through the Slate application portal. School of Management applicants sometimes see fee waivers during recruitment events, virtual open houses, or partner-organisation drives. Nursing and Education programmes may charge a slightly different fee, so verify the exact amount on the specific programme page before submitting the application.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at USF?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders at USF may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during regular semesters and 40 hours per week during official breaks. On-campus roles include library assistants, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and dining services positions. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training authorisation, typically tied to a credit-bearing internship in the second semester or later.
Ques. Which Indian education loan providers finance the University of San Francisco?
Ans. Major Indian lenders recognising USF include HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo, and Prodigy Finance for non-collateralised loans up to ₹75 lakh. Public-sector banks such as SBI, Bank of Baroda, and Union Bank fund USF admits under their global education loan schemes with collateral. Prodigy Finance and MPOWER offer USD-denominated loans without an Indian co-signer requirement for STEM master’s admits.
Ques. What documents does USF require for credential verification?
Ans. Indian graduate applicants must submit a course-by-course credential evaluation from World Education Services (WES) or Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). Required uploads include official Class 10, Class 12, and bachelor’s transcripts, mark sheets, degree certificate or provisional certificate, and a passport bio-page copy. Start the evaluation at least eight weeks before your target deadline to allow processing and mailing lead time.
Ques. Does the University of San Francisco offer conditional admission for lower English scores?
Ans. Yes, USF operates conditional admission through its English as a Second Language pathway for graduate applicants whose TOEFL or IELTS falls just below the minimum. Admits enrol in an Intensive English Programme at the USF Center for Global Education, typically one or two semesters, before starting graduate coursework. This route works for students with TOEFL iBT 65 or IELTS 5.5 who otherwise meet academic criteria.
Ques. What is the refund policy at USF after enrolment?
Ans. USF follows a graduated tuition refund schedule: 100% refund if a student withdraws before classes begin, 90% within the first week, 50% by the third week, and no refund after the fourth week of the semester. Fees, housing charges, and health insurance follow separate schedules. International students who withdraw before securing an F-1 visa receive a full tuition refund with proof of visa denial from the US consulate.

Dislikes
- It is private so high tuition fees
- Limited electives available to choose
- It can improve in terms of facilities
Campus Life
- On our campus, many events are held every week, and we are notified prior by emails so we can stop by for whichever event interests us.
- It provides facilities like a library, sports, medical, food court and cafeteria, gym, swimming pool, and basketball court.
- And there are plenty of cultural activities and extracurricular activities.

Likes
- Location of the campus is in the heart of San Francisco downtown
- Class size is pretty decent with 15-20 students in each class
- Diversity of people from all around the globe
Dislikes
- Not as many career fairs as I expected
- Job fairs not conducted at the downtown campus
- Expected more workshops, seminars, webinars to prepare students for the job market
Campus Life
- The campus experience in terms of events, fests, clubs and extracurricular activities was pretty good. My college has 2 campuses.
- One campus is in downtown San Francisco and the other one is in San Francisco city.
- The downtown campus is a smaller campus with just one building as the campus while the other campus in the city is the bigger campus with library.
Fees
- $45,000 was the tuition fees, living expenses was around $10-$15k for the 1.5 years duration of my course.
- Fees are due semester wise and you also have the option to enrol in a payment plan that allows you to pay fees for each semester in a monthly instalment.
- The monthly cost of living in San Francisco on a student budget would be around $1250-$1500.

Likes
- Good faculty, Proper course based on what I wanted plus it was a STEM course.
Overview
Quite good, met a lot of new people, good faculty, good course.
Campus Life
I was on the downtown campus so not much aware about the activities but i am sure they were good.
Likes
- It was in San Francisco which is a hub for many tech companies and start ups. The program gave an exposure of the US market to work on various projects with clients.
Overview
Overall a good experience and I got a good exposure too but living in San Francisco is expensive and I would rather choose a university in Texas or some other state and pay less when I have to work by myself for getting a job.
Campus Life
This classes for this program doesn't happen in the main campus, which is a bummer. The downtown campus is just a building but equipped with all the basic facilities. The main campus, however, is huge and has gym, pool, recreation hall, library etc. There is a lot happening in the main campus including extracurricular activities, movie nights. Graduate Marketing Association is one of the club that the student can join at the downtown campus.
Likes
- The location and data science program. I like the small school size and the fact that it's in the middle of San Francisco. It has a good reputation because it's a private university.
Overview
My experience has been decent at USF. I've been in several classes where I know the professor is well versed in the content, which makes the learning process a lot less daunting. Social groups are similar to high school culture, so it can be difficult to find new people who are welcoming into friend groups. The university offers lots of events and the sports games are filled with energy.
Campus Life
There are lots of clubs, I'm part of a new one called USF Khandaann which we made for south Asian students to find a community. The Wi-Fi is shaky sometimes, there is a Koret gym, a large library.
Overview
I chose this program because of the exposure it was offering. Also, having the same set of people traveling with you all around the world strengthens your network. Moreover, i am an entrepreneur so wanted to have academic strong in that field.
Fees
38000 USD is the program fee.
Overview
I opted for USF because it had the direct-entry nursing program that I had been aiming for as well as being one of the tops in the nation. There are only a few direct-entry nursing programs in California so USF was a top choice for me. As a low-income student, I was able to apply to a majority of my colleges without fees and USF had already given me an application fee exemption due to my GPA and test scores. In the end, I chose USF from other schools like UC Santa Barbara and Azusa Pacific University because I felt that USF provided me the best of everything and provided me with enough financial assistance to be able to afford the education.
Fees
The tuition is $50000 and they have different levels of academic scholarships depending on your GPA and essay. I have been awarded the presidential scholarship which gives me $10000 per year and it was based on a GPA above 3.5. I have heard that there may be full scholarships given out but those would require at least a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a stellar test score. I believe scholarships may be available for international applicants but I would not be sure of that.
Overview
I wanted to get into a school in California so I applied for almost all the major universities in California. I have a mentor who helped me pay for all the application fees. Almost all of them accepted me. I choose USFCA because I have heard that employers pay a lot in silicon valley. I grew up in a middle-class family so I had a lot of access to education resources growing up. I was always at the top of my classes because I want my parents to be proud of me.
Fees
Tuition for being a full-time student for a year is about $50,000. The housing cost around $11,000. The dining cost around $5,000. Due to some circumstances that I don't want to talk about, I am not getting any scholarships. My mentor is paying for all my costs because he believes in me and wants me to succeed.
