Stony Brook University Acceptance Rate
Stony Brook University reports an institutional acceptance rate of 48 percent, giving it a moderately selective admissions profile. Indian applicants who meet the Class XII or Bachelor’s floor with strong English scores typically clear the academic bar; the differentiation happens on essays, research fit, and rigour of school curriculum.
How Selective is Stony Brook for Indian Students?
Competitive Indian majors — MS Computer Science, MS Electrical Engineering, MS Finance, and the College of Business MBA — sit significantly below the 48 percent institutional rate because of heavy applicant volume from India and China. Undergraduate CS and engineering are also more competitive than the university-wide average. Stony Brook’s ranking band — QS World 468 (2027), US News Best Global 236, and ARWU 188 — supports the moderate selectivity story.
What Strengthens Your Application?
For UG, high Class XII marks in relevant subjects, a well-argued personal essay, and demonstrated leadership move the needle. For PG, research alignment with named faculty, strong quant scores (GRE 320+ for competitive labs), and technical portfolios (GitHub, publications, industry projects) lift the profile beyond the numeric floor.
Insider note: Stony Brook admits are strongest when the SOP names 2-3 specific faculty and current research groups by name. Generic "excellent research environment" essays tend to underperform.
USA Student Visa Process
Indian students admitted to Stony Brook University apply for the F-1 student visa at a US consulate in India (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad). The process starts once the university issues the Form I-20 after you confirm your seat and submit the financial affidavit.
Steps include paying the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,509), completing the DS-160 online visa application, paying the visa application fee of USD 185 (INR 17,712), and booking a biometrics appointment plus a consular interview. Prepare bank statements, loan sanction letters, and the I-20 for the interview.
Planning note: Book your F-1 visa slot as soon as the I-20 arrives; peak-season Mumbai and Delhi slots for August 2027 arrivals typically fill by March. Post-arrival, complete the SEVIS check-in and mandatory international student orientation at the Stony Brook Visa and Immigration Services office within the first two weeks.
Tips and Checklist for Stony Brook University
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian applicant patterns at Stony Brook University for the Fall 2027 intake. Sequence them backwards from your target deadline (1 November 2026 for UG Early Action or 1 February 2027 for competitive PG programs) to stay on track.
- Request academic transcripts and degree certificates 8 weeks before your deadline — Indian university registrar offices are slow to issue certified copies.
- Register for IELTS or TOEFL 12 weeks in advance — score reports need 3-4 weeks to reach Stony Brook’s institution code.
- Line up recommenders 6-8 weeks early and share your CV, SOP draft, and program page with them.
- Draft your SOP program-by-program — name 2-3 Stony Brook faculty whose research you want to join.
- Verify institutional code IDs for score reporting (IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT) before scheduling your test date.
- Pre-fund a forex card or international debit card to pay the USD 50 UG or USD 100 PG application fee without transaction failure.
- Track application status weekly through the Solar Student portal after submission.
- Prepare financial documents early — the I-20 requires proof of USD 58,799 (INR 56.28 Lakhs) available for the first year.
Stony Brook University admissions reward specific, program-aligned applications more than generic prestige-first essays. Meet the deadlines, get the English score right, and tell the admissions committee exactly why this program — not just this university — is the right fit.

- World class faculty, education from USA gives you immense opportunity to learn from the top notch professors (some of them are even the ones we read books of)
- If you are interested in research, the lab and university infrastructure provides you all.
Dislikes
- Some of the on campus housing at stony brook is not exactly near the campus it almost 15 mins drive.
- Cant get on campus jobs easily
- Most of the TA/RA positions are unpaid
Scholarship
- So I received a scholarship in the first 2 semesters of my master's; when I came here, I got a paid TA where 50% of my fees were waived off and I used to get a stipend of $1200 per month.
- It is highly unlikely that you would get such a scholarship at SBU, because very few people from my batch got this opportunity; I would say just 2 or 3. I was in constant touch with the professors before coming here so I was able to make it but it's rare, to be honest.

- The main factor would be the tuition over here is really less taking into account the reputation and quality of the academics. It suits well for my profile.
- I liked the diverse group of people I was able to meet over here, academics if you pick and choose your courses you can learn a lot, so many resources to study (Libraries and lounges)
Dislikes
- As they have given too many admissions getting to choose one like has been really difficult, finding part time is really difficult. I don't know why they hesitate to give offer letter."
Overview
I would say it's good for the most part of it but that comes from a person who doesn't have any homesick and loves being here. One thing that's worrying is being without any job offer that will always be in the back of the head and haunts me. Leaving that everything else is good. There are some limitations but most part I got so many things to do I don't even get the time to try new stuff.
Likes
- I chose this college because of its reputation and high ROI. When moving to abroad, cost plays an essential role and it can sometimes be burdensome. Stony Brook University has one of the lowest tuition fees in United States and delivers exceptional quality of education. I particularly chose this program because I am interested in the fields of Machine Learning, Data Science and Software Development. Professors are experienced in their fields and publish in top-tier conferences and journals like CVPR and ICCV. These factors were more than enough for me to pursue my masters degree here.
- First of all, it is a beautiful, lush green campus far away from bustling cities. It provides you with a perfect setting to learn your interests and grow.
- Secondly, assignments here are relatable and will demand a lot of hard work. But if done fairly and without the use of AI, then I guarantee you that it will be all worth it.
Dislikes
- The only thing I dislike about my university is their assumptions regarding us knowing many things. Some professors tend to skip some foundational things by saying that they assume that we have already learnt this stuff in our bachelor's and hence we know it. But this is not true. All the students tend to come from diverse colleges with a diverse curriculum.
- So, assuming that we know some topics beforehand and skipping them proves to be a hindrance while studying some advanced topics in the course. So here, self-studying plays a pivotal role because students must self-study many essential topics before jumping to the advanced things taught in the class. Apart from this, there is severe competition for everything here, ranging from course selections to on-campus jobs and housing selection. This can be stressful at times. So, apart from these two things, there is nothing that I dislike about my university.
Overview
My university experience has been incredibly rewarding so far. I've been exposed to new and exciting knowledge, thanks to supportive professors and a well-rounded curriculum, and I've had the chance to meet a diverse group of people, which has expanded my horizons and enhanced my personal growth.
Overview
Huge campus, the fact that it's a state university, lower tuition fees, the flexibility of selection of subjects for graduating, project/thesis option, the fact that everybody completes their masters in 1.5 years instead of 2 years, good placements with amazon being the mass recruiter, good quality research, good reputation, lower living expenses, lower rent for on-campus housing, many facilities, free university transportation, etc.
Scholarship
No, I didn't receive any scholarship.
Overview
Stony Brook was among the top 40 schools for computer science and one of the most economical schools as well. They are really famous for their systems-related courses as well as cutting-edge technologies like Data Science, Computer Vision and Machine Learning.
Scholarship
No, The fee is already cheap and they don't offer a lot of scholarships.
Overview
Good ranking for Computer Vision and Excellent campus facilities. Low cost and therefore high return on investments. Great placement opportunities for jobs and internships.
Scholarship
No, I didn't receive any scholarship.
