Stony Brook University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Stony Brook University requirements for Indian graduate applicants centre on a four-year bachelor’s degree, a valid English test, and course-specific academic prerequisites.

Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with 60% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); some engineering departments look for 65%.
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 80 (legacy scale) for master’s applicants and 90 for doctoral applicants, or IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo 105.
  • Credential verification: WES, ECE, or Josef Silny course-by-course evaluation is required from most Indian universities.
  • Test scores: GRE is optional for most MS programmes; GMAT is optional for the College of Business MBA and MS Finance.

Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Class 12 with 80% to 85% (recommended) from CBSE, ICSE, or state boards; strong math scores for STEM programmes.
  • English test: TOEFL iBT 4 (new 1-6 scale, exams after 21 January 2026) / 80 (legacy 0-120 scale, exams before 21 January 2026), IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105, or PTE Academic 53.

Key insight: Indian applicants with three or more years of English-medium instruction may request an English test waiver from Stony Brook Undergraduate Admissions by uploading a signed letter from the school principal.

Stony Brook University Acceptance Rate 2027

Stony Brook University acceptance rate sits at approximately 48% (estimated), based on public admissions data, which makes it a selectively moderate campus rather than a low-yield elite school. The Graduate School does not publish an aggregate acceptance rate, but competitive programmes such as MS Computer Science and MS Data Science typically admit under 25% of Indian applicants.

YearUndergraduate Acceptance RateTrend
202648% (estimated)Stable
202549% (estimated)Marginal drop

The rate is inflated by heavy in-state applicant volume from New York; international selectivity is materially tighter for STEM programmes. Test-optional policies for undergraduate applicants continue in the Fall 2027 cycle.

Reality check: A 48% headline hides programme-level variance. Indian MS Computer Science applicants should treat Stony Brook as a target-to-reach school, not a safety, and pair the application with two safeties elsewhere.

Stony Brook University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The main Stony Brook University campus sits on 1,454 acres in Suffolk County, Long Island, about 90 minutes east of Manhattan by the Long Island Rail Road service that runs from Penn Station to Stony Brook Station.

  • Location and transport: The Long Island Rail Road station sits at the western edge of campus; Manhattan is 60 miles west and reachable in 90 minutes.

Stony Brook University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Career outcomes for Stony Brook University graduates cluster near strong public research averages, with employment or continued study reaching about 95% within one year of graduation for bachelor’s degree holders.

  • Employment within one year: 95% (undergraduate)
  • Median earnings ten years after enrolment: $ 59,300 (₹ 56.77 lakh)
  • Computer Science starting salary: $ 73,837 (₹ 70.69 lakh)
  • MBA average salary: $ 68,399 (₹ 65.49 lakh)
  • Top recruiting sectors: Health care systems, technology (large-cap), financial services, biotechnology, and federal research labs including Brookhaven National Laboratory.
  • OPT support: All STEM master’s degrees qualify for the 36-month STEM OPT extension after the standard 12-month OPT, giving Indian graduates three full years to secure H-1B sponsorship.

Insider note: Long Island’s proximity to Manhattan gives Stony Brook MS Computer Science graduates access to the same New York City recruiting pipeline as NYU without the Manhattan tuition premium.

Stony Brook University vs Peer Universities

Indian applicants comparing Stony Brook University typically weigh it against other large public research universities in the Northeast and East Coast, plus one aspirational New York private for reference.

UniversityQS World 2027Annual PG Tuition (USD)Annual PG Tuition (INR lakh)Differentiator
Stony Brook University#468$ 26,990₹ 25.84 lakhStrongest ARWU trajectory in the SUNY system, STEM OPT eligible
University at Buffalo#464$ 28,320₹ 27.11 lakhSUNY peer, stronger engineering brand
Rutgers University New Brunswick#372$ 32,000 (estimated)₹ 30.64 lakhBig Ten membership and larger alumni network on East Coast
University of Massachusetts Amherst#241$ 34,000 (estimated)₹ 32.55 lakhHigher QS rank and stronger CS reputation
New York University#40$ 53,300 (estimated)₹ 51.03 lakhManhattan location and elite ranking at nearly 2x cost

Stony Brook wins on price for STEM master’s applicants who want New York access without Manhattan tuition. It loses to Rutgers and UMass Amherst on QS rank, and to NYU on employer brand pull in Manhattan finance.

An Indian applicant deciding between Stony Brook and its SUNY twin at Buffalo should let subject strength drive the choice, since the tuition delta is minor and both offer STEM OPT.

The single strongest Indian-student advantage is Stony Brook’s ARWU 2026 leap to #188 alongside SUNY out-of-state pricing that stays below $ 27,000 per year for graduate tuition.

Stony Brook University fits the profile of an Indian STEM master’s applicant whose total investment near ₹ 48.57 lakh should be paid down by a median $ 73,837 Computer Science starting salary within the STEM OPT window. The F-1 visa route plus 36-month OPT gives runway to secure H-1B sponsorship without the Manhattan cost of living.

It is not the right pick for Indian students prioritising elite QS brand or Manhattan proximity for finance recruiting; New York University is a stronger fit if budget allows, and Rutgers New Brunswick is a sensible compromise for Big Ten brand at lower cost.

Stony Brook University FAQs

Ques. What English-taught graduate programs does Stony Brook University offer beyond STEM?

Ans. Stony Brook University offers over 140 graduate programmes, all taught in English. Beyond the popular MS Computer Science and MS Data Science tracks, Indian applicants can pursue MA Economics, MPH Public Health, MS Journalism, MFA Creative Writing, and MS Higher Education Administration. The Graduate School catalogue lists every option with department-specific admission deadlines that vary from January through May.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on and off campus at Stony Brook?

Ans. Indian F-1 students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during breaks without additional authorisation. Indian applicants can request a waiver by emailing graduate.admissions@stonybrook.edu with proof of event attendance.

Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Stony Brook University for education loans?

Ans. SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Avanse all list Stony Brook University in their pre-approved lists for education loans up to ₹ 60 lakh without property collateral in most cases. Non-collateral limits vary by lender and cosigner profile. Indian applicants should share the I-20 admission letter with the lender before the F-1 visa interview.

Ques. Can dependents accompany Indian students to Stony Brook, and what are the visa rules?

Ans. Yes, Indian F-1 students may bring a spouse and unmarried children under 21 on F-2 dependent visas. Stony Brook issues a separate I-20 for each dependent after the student proves additional financial support of about $ 6,000 per dependent per year. F-2 spouses may not work in the United States but may enrol part-time in academic programmes. F-2 children may attend K-12 public schools free of charge.

Ques. How do Indian applicants get transcripts verified for Stony Brook admission?

Ans. Indian graduate applicants must submit sealed transcripts directly to WES, ECE, or Josef Silny for course-by-course evaluation. The verified report goes to Stony Brook Graduate Admissions electronically. Undergraduate applicants can submit self-uploaded Class 12 marksheets at application time and mail originals only after admission. Verification runs 4 to 6 weeks, so Indian applicants should mail sealed envelopes at least two months before the deadline.

Campus Life

  • Different events will keep happening around the campus; you will have different apps by which you can track those events and go and enjoy them.
  • Indian events like diwali, garba will also happen so get some indian outfits as well.
  • Every facility, like the world-class library and sports medical services, you would get everything on campus and some other person is there to help you out all the time.

Fees

  • Fees are charged per semester but it is based on how many credits you take, so at SBU per credit, it costs around $1k, and for a master's in computer engineering, you need to complete at least 30 credits so straight total fees would cost around $30k. But keep $4k-$5k for extra charges that universities take per semester, also for the student health insurance.
  • I live on campus so it costs me $900 per month, but if you choose to live off campus it would cost less but the commute is not good so it is highly recommended to live on campus at SBU. So $900 rent + 100-150$ basic grocery expenses (being said that you dont live in luxury, you will have to cook urself and be in a budget; otherwise, this could increase easily)
  • SBU buses are free so not much cost in commuting if you live on campus.

  • My college has three main campuses: SBU main campus, Southampton campus and Manhattan campus.
  • All facilities are available, including the gym, football, basketball, badminton, swimming, squash, volleyball, and pickleball. Extracurriculars in terms of contributing to career growth are widely available on campus through a lot of events.

Overview

I would say it's good for the most part of it but that comes from a person who doesn't have any homesick and loves being here. One thing that's worrying is being without any job offer that will always be in the back of the head and haunts me. Leaving that everything else is good. There are some limitations but most part I got so many things to do I don't even get the time to try new stuff.

Campus Life

Part time is really difficult to find over here, for extracurricular there will be events going on like any other university but depends on the interest of individual. As a badminton fan they don't have a separate court for badminton and also I have to pay $30 per month to access the gym which is kind of sad. I really like the classes and Libraries, one of the library is open 24 hours and also study lounges are so many over here and they are really good. Wifi is really good never had a problem with it for more than 10 min. This university is best for people who want to research as they have a lot of funding for research projects (I am not 100% sure of this)

Throughout the year, the university offers a wide range of activities and events. The research facilities are cutting-edge, and the libraries have extensive resources. High-speed Wi-Fi connectivity is readily available, and the institution provides excellent sports facilities. Overview

Huge campus, the fact that it's a state university, lower tuition fees, the flexibility of selection of subjects for graduating, project/thesis option, the fact that everybody completes their masters in 1.5 years instead of 2 years, good placements with amazon being the mass recruiter, good quality research, good reputation, lower living expenses, lower rent for on-campus housing, many facilities, free university transportation, etc.

Fees

It depends on the credits. For masters 31 credits are compulsory and every credit costs around $964 apart from the other fees like health insurance, transportation, etc. Every semester all credits taken above 12 aren't charged. Approximately the tuition fee is around $40000 for two years.
