Syracuse University Admissions Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at Syracuse works at two floors, an institution-wide minimum and a stricter school-specific bar for competitive programs like Whitman, Newhouse (the communications school), and iSchool. Indian applicants should read both.
Syracuse University Academic Requirements for Indian Students
- UG general entry: Class XII at 75% or higher, with a stronger 80-plus profile suiting Whitman and Newhouse.
- PG general entry: Bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA (around 60 to 65%).
- MBA entry: Bachelor’s with a solid academic record. Work experience preferred but not mandatory for exceptional profiles.
- PhD entry: Master’s degree in a related discipline plus research statement.
- GRE and GMAT: Optional across ECS and Whitman for Fall 2027 applications.
What are Syracuse University’s IELTS and TOEFL Minimums?
Indian applicants must submit an English proficiency test score unless they qualify for one of Syracuse’s narrow exemptions. The table below lists the institution-wide floor and the stricter bars set by Whitman, Architecture, and Newhouse.
| Test | Institution-wide Minimum | Whitman / Architecture | Newhouse |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.5 |
| TOEFL iBT | 85 | 90 | 102 |
| Duolingo English Test | 125 | 125 | 130 |
| PTE Academic | Accepted, per school minimum | Accepted | Accepted |
Syracuse University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Waivers at Syracuse are narrow. The country-based exemption covers Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom, so India is not on that list. Indian applicants with a completed advanced degree from an accredited US institution may request a waiver. Online graduate programs additionally allow a case-by-case Medium-of-Instruction (MOI) waiver for Indian applicants whose Bachelor’s was taught in English. This must be requested from an enrollment specialist and is not automatic.
Insider note: If your IELTS is short by half a band, Syracuse will conditionally admit you and route you through the English Language Institute (ELI) before your degree program begins. This adds one term to your timeline and to your cost.

Syracuse University Admit Chances for Indian Applicants
The USNews Best Global ranking band puts Syracuse at 483 for 2025-26. Indian applicants should treat Syracuse as a match, not a stretch. Whitman is more selective on essays and interviews, whereas ECS and iSchool are more numbers-driven. A 3.5-plus GPA with a strong SOP typically converts to an admit for on-campus MS Computer Science or Applied Data Science.
Planning note: Apply in the earliest live round, so Priority for Whitman MBA and Priority 1 for iSchool. Round 1 admits at Whitman historically get first look at merit scholarships, and Priority 1 iSchool admits are reviewed before class size fills.
USA Student Visa Process for Syracuse University Admissions
Indian students at Syracuse enter the US on an F-1 Student Visa. After admission, Syracuse’s Center for International Services issues an I-20 (SEVIS Form I-20 Certificate of Eligibility) once you submit financial documentation covering first-year expenses. You then pay the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,491), book a US visa appointment at the Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad consulate, and attend a personal interview. The current MRV fee is USD 185 (around INR 17,703).
You may enter the US no earlier than 30 days before your I-20 program start date. On arrival, complete the Center for International Services orientation and immigration check-in before your SEVIS record activates with the Department of Homeland Security. A "Continued Attendance" I-20 is emailed 2 to 4 weeks after classes begin.
2026 update: Wait times at the Mumbai and Delhi consulates for student visa appointments continue to run 4 to 8 weeks in peak summer. Book your slot the day the I-20 arrives to hold a July or August 2027 interview date for Fall arrival.

Tips for Syracuse University Admissions
The following tips are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Syracuse University across recent admission cycles.
- Target the Priority round for Whitman MBA. Round 1 admits get first access to merit scholarships worth 25 to 50% of tuition.
- Aim for IELTS 7.0 not 6.5 if targeting Newhouse, Whitman, or iSchool Applied Data Science, because the effective floor sits above the institution minimum.
- Choose Fall over Spring intake when your target program is offered in both, because Fall opens the widest scholarship and RA pool.
- Use WES for online graduate applications to avoid delays. On-campus programs typically accept in-house credential evaluation.
- Book the F-1 visa slot immediately after I-20 arrives, because Indian consulates run 4 to 8 week backlogs in summer.
- Skip GRE only if your GPA is strong. A borderline 3.0 GPA benefits from a 320-plus GRE score for ECS scholarship consideration.

- University as a whole is pretty great.
- The campus is good as well.
- The CS core courses seemed to be a little off the track, but we had multiple good options from the electives.

- The college campus is very beautiful. And it gets even better during the winters.
- The college hosts a variety of events including fun and cultural events. They also celebrate Indian festivals so we can experience our traditional festivals away from home.
- They provide us with career guidance where they go through our resumes and help us improve those for us to get a better chance in our job search.
Dislikes
- The curriculum is not that vast. There are very limited courses to select from. I had decided to enroll in some courses back in India but during the time of enrollment, those course were not available.
- The process for applying for a CPT is very bad. Like there is a deadline after which even if you get any internship offer from any company, the college will not be filing your CPT.
- As this is not a state university, the tuition cost is very high as compared to the other universities.
Scholarship
- Syracuse University does provide scholarships to selected students, but I wasn't fortunate enough to receive one.
- Some of my batchmates did receive the scholarship, which was around $20000.
- Every year approx 50% of students receive a scholarship. The amount varies for each student depending on their profile. Also, the scholarship depends on the course that you are accepted into. Usually 50% of computer science students receive scholarships.

- Weather conditions get really harsh during winters with extreme snow and wind. Which sometimes adds a lot especially for people or students like me who come from a country like India where weather conditions are not so extreme but it's excuse the summers are really warm but the winters are super cold with a lot of snow.
Overview
Overall my experience was one of the best periods and I made many friends. The winters were really tough, summer were really fun but mostly quiet due to holidays but overall it is a remembering memory.
Overview
For the admission, I gave the GRE exam and TOEFL. I have written a Statement of Purpose and have taken letters of Recommendations from three of the professors who were my mentors and educational advisor during my undergraduate.
Scholarship
Scholarships are based on merit. The merit includes papers that we have published, our undergraduate scores, and projects that we have done during and after undergraduation. Work experience also impacts and most importantly how one presents all these things.
