Worcester Polytechnic Institute Application Deadlines
WPI runs fixed-round undergraduate deadlines through the Common Application and rolling graduate deadlines through its own portal. Indian applicants should treat Fall 2027 as the primary intake because that is when nearly every program opens, with Spring limited to a handful of master’s tracks. Dates below are drawn from WPI’s undergraduate application options page and its graduate application FAQ.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (September), and most programs open here.
| Intake | Level | App Opens | Deadline | App Fee | Portal |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG, Early Decision I | Open | 1 November 2026 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | Common App |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG, Early Action I | Open | 1 November 2026 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | Common App |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG, Early Decision II | Open | 5 January 2027 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | Common App |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG, Early Action II | Open | 5 January 2027 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | Common App |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | UG, Regular Decision | Open | 1 February 2027 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | Common App |
| Fall 2027 (Primary intake) | PG, most master’s programs | Rolling | Rolling, funding priority 1 January 2027 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | WPI Graduate Portal |
| Spring 2027 | PG, select master’s programs | Rolling | Two weeks before classes start in mid-January 2027 | USD 70 (INR 6,695) | WPI Graduate Portal |
Two timing points matter for Indian applicants. WPI recommends filing at least two months before the intended start date so I-20 processing and F-1 visa slots line up. The graduate portal keeps accepting complete applications up to two weeks before classes begin, but funding decisions close well before that window.
Planning note: Early Decision at WPI is binding. A positive decision means you must withdraw all other US applications, so choose Early Action or Regular Decision if you want to compare US financial-aid offers before committing.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Eligibility for Indian Students
WPI sets separate academic and English floors for undergraduate and master’s applicants. Figures below come from WPI’s international graduate applicants page and its published English proficiency FAQ.
- UG general entry: Class XII at around 75 percent from a recognised Indian board, with Mathematics and at least one Science subject through Class XII.
- PG general entry: Bachelor’s from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA on 4.0 (around 65 percent for Indian applicants) in a related field.
- Business master’s entry: Bachelor’s with 3.0 GPA plus a quantitative background in maths and statistics.
- PhD entry: Master’s preferred with a strong research background, though some programs admit directly from a Bachelor’s.
WPI accepts four English proficiency tests. The floor differs by level, and Duolingo and PTE are both accepted alongside IELTS and TOEFL.
| Level | TOEFL iBT | IELTS | Duolingo | PTE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 90 (no sub-score below 20) | 7.0 (no band below 6.5) | 125 | 61 |
| Most master’s programs | 84 | 6.5 | 115 | Contact department |
| Business master’s programs | 90 | 7.0 | 115 | Contact department |
| Business PhD | 100 | 7.5 | Not accepted | Not accepted |
Worcester Polytechnic Institute IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Indian applicants who studied at a university in an English-medium country can request a waiver by writing to grad@wpi.edu before applying. WPI grants the waiver in two specific scenarios.
- Academic route: Two years (four semesters) of full-time postsecondary study at an accredited institution in the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or an Anglophone country, completed within the last five years.
- Work route: Three or more years of full-time work in the US in an English-language environment.
Medium-of-instruction letters from Indian universities are not accepted on their own. If your Bachelor’s in India was taught in English, you still need an official test score.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute PG Programs and English Scores
WPI offers over 50 master’s tracks concentrated in engineering, computing, and data. The nine programs below carry the largest Indian intake and share the same 3.0 GPA floor. PG base tuition is USD 30,420 (around INR 29.09 Lakhs) per year for a standard 30-credit master’s, and a course-by-course breakdown lives on the detailed program list.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |

GRE is not required for any of the master’s programs listed above. A statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation are needed across the board. For funding, most programs review complete files received by 1 January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry.
Insider note: WPI’s seven-week term system means each master’s course runs at double the pace of a typical semester, with students taking one to two subjects per term instead of a full semester load. Indian students in MS Robotics and MS Data Science often take two courses in their first term before speeding up.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduate application requirements page for your chosen program before applying.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute UG Programs
WPI’s undergraduate portfolio is heavily STEM-weighted. Indian first-year applicants most often shortlist the five programs below. UG base tuition is USD 61,790 (around INR 59.09 Lakhs) per year, with all five running on WPI’s project-based four-year curriculum.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |

Worcester Polytechnic Institute PhD Admissions for Indian Applicants
WPI awards PhDs across engineering, science, and management. Doctoral applicants use the same graduate portal as master’s applicants. Most STEM PhDs come with full funding for admitted students, meaning tuition remission and a stipend across the standard four to five year timeline.
- Academic entry: Master’s in a related field is preferred, though some programs admit strong Bachelor’s candidates directly into the PhD track.
- English floor: IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 100 for the Business PhD, and IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 84 for engineering and science PhDs.
- Funding: Research and teaching assistantships are decided alongside admission, and priority is 1 January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry.
- GRE: Not required for most engineering PhDs. The Business PhD requires GRE or GMAT.
The application also asks for a research statement in addition to the standard statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation (typically from faculty), and a CV. Indian PhD applicants are strongly advised to email prospective supervisors well before the January funding deadline.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Application Process
The path differs by level. Undergraduates apply once through the Common App, and graduate applicants apply program-by-program through the WPI graduate portal.

Worcester Polytechnic Institute Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline
Notification windows are fixed by round for undergraduate applicants and rolling for graduate applicants. Once you receive an offer, WPI issues an I-20 after you accept and submit financial documents. The I-20 is the document you take to your US visa interview.
- Early Decision I: Decisions posted by mid-December 2026. Enrolment deposit due within three weeks of the offer.
- Early Decision II: Decisions posted by mid-February 2027. Enrolment deposit due within three weeks.
- Early Action I and II: Decisions posted by late January and late February 2027. Enrolment deposit due by 1 May 2027.
- Regular Decision: Decisions posted by late March 2027. Enrolment deposit due by 1 May 2027.
- Graduate rolling: Decisions typically arrive within 6 to 8 weeks of a complete application. Deferral to the next intake is allowed on written request.
Conditional offers are rare at WPI. If you are still finishing your Bachelor’s or Class XII when you apply, WPI issues a standard offer contingent on you submitting the final transcript before matriculation.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Documents Required
The list below is the full paperwork bundle Indian applicants should have ready before starting the Common App or the graduate portal. Digital PDF uploads are the default, and nothing is mailed by post.
- Passport bio-data page with a clear scan valid through at least Fall 2028.
- Class X and Class XII transcripts for undergraduate applicants. All Bachelor’s and postgraduate transcripts for master’s and PhD applicants.
- Degree certificate or a provisional certificate for graduate applicants.
- Statement of Purpose of 500 to 1,000 words covering academic goals and program fit.
- Two teacher letters plus one counsellor letter for UG, and three academic or professional letters for PG.
- Updated CV or resume covering academics, projects, internships, and any publications.
- Official English test score report from IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or PTE sent directly by the testing agency.
- Financial affidavit and bank statement required after admission for the I-20 issuance.
- Passport-sized photograph meeting US visa specifications.
WPI accepts credential evaluations from NACES-approved agencies including WES. Only some graduate programs require it, so check your program page before paying for one.
Insider note: Indian bank statements for I-20 issuance must show funds in a savings or fixed deposit account held in the sponsor’s name. Home-loan pre-approvals or property valuations are not accepted.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Acceptance Rate for Indian Applicants
WPI publishes a headline undergraduate acceptance rate of around 60 percent, with the international pool sitting closer to 41 percent. That gap reflects two things, heavier competition among international applicants for merit-scholarship dollars, and stricter English-score thresholds. WPI’s current ranking band in QS and US News keeps it competitive without being ultra-selective.
How competitive is Worcester Polytechnic Institute for Indian STEM applicants
MS Robotics, MS Data Science, and MS Computer Science draw the largest Indian pools and admit at rates below the institution average. A Bachelor’s above 70 percent from a well-known Indian engineering college, plus a clear technical statement of purpose, tracks with successful applications in these programs.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute Application Strength Signals
Concrete project experience, hands-on lab work, or research publications matter more than raw scores past the eligibility floor. WPI’s admissions readers reward applicants who have built or shipped something, given the university’s own project-heavy identity.
USA Student Visa Process for Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Indian students admitted to WPI apply for the F-1 student visa, the standard US academic visa. Once WPI issues your I-20 after you accept the offer, you pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (around INR 33,474), complete the DS-160 form, and book a visa interview at any US Consulate in India.
The consular officer will ask about your intended program, funding, and post-study plans. Carry the I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, WPI offer letter, financial documents, and academic transcripts to the interview. Once in the US, register with WPI’s International Student and Scholars Office within 30 days of arriving. The same office handles OPT extensions and travel signatures on the I-20.
2026 update: Book your visa slot the day the interview calendar opens for your consulate. Slots for Fall 2027 open in April and May 2027 and fill within hours in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
Tips and Checklist for Worcester Polytechnic Institute
The tips and steps below are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Read them alongside the deadlines table before you start filling out the Common App or the graduate portal.
- Book IELTS by August 2026 because WPI needs official scores at submission and slots in Indian metros fill fast for October and November.
- Request Indian university transcripts eight weeks before your deadline, since issue times run four to six weeks plus additional time for English translation.
- Email potential PhD supervisors before the 1 January 2027 funding priority date, since funded slots go to applicants who have been in touch.
- Reserve a WES evaluation only if your program page asks for one, as WPI does not require it universally.
- Address the seven-week term system in your SOP so admissions readers see you understand WPI runs four seven-week terms per year instead of two semesters.
- File the CSS Profile before the Regular Decision deadline if you want to be considered for need-based aid, since WPI uses CSS and not FAFSA for internationals.
- Read student reviews from Indian applicants before choosing Early Decision, since ED offers are binding across US colleges.
- Keep funds parked for the I-20 so bank statements can be issued quickly once the offer arrives and cover the first year cost as stated on your I-20.
Planning note: Give yourself a 90-day cushion between the deadline you target and your visa interview date. WPI’s I-20 turnaround averages two weeks, and visa slot availability drives the rest of the timeline.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute is a mid-selective private STEM university where a well-prepared Indian applicant has strong odds, and the two levers that separate admits from denies are English-score readiness and a project-heavy story that matches WPI’s own hands-on identity.

- Our university has a global project centre at recreational centre which gives the student with good opportunity to showcase their projects worldwide.
- People are really collaborative here and the staff are encouraging to group work reflecting real world environment problem solving.
Dislikes
- The intense 7 week term system can be challenging as it compresses course material into a shorter time frame with multiple projects bombarding from all subjects with exams and quiz
- The location is pleasant but the town is small and people don't come around often less summer events. Feels isolated
- Career fairs are competitive as like on campus jobs are hard to get and hard to reach
Scholarship
- I'm glad to announce that I was awarded a $9,600 scholarship based on my academic performance, Statement of Purpose (SOP), and Letters of Recommendation (LOR). The university's scholarship committee reviewed these materials to determine the award amount. While scholarship amounts vary for every student, ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 per year, I am pleased to have earned a sizable gift to help fund my study. Though I am not aware of the exact criteria utilised to establish individual scholarship amounts, obtaining $9,600 is a major acknowledgement of my academic achievements and potential.
- This prize will help me minimise my educational expenses and validate my efforts throughout the application process. It is satisfying to know that the university regards my academic profile and sees possibilities for my future achievements.

- I've obtained a merit scholarship of $2500 per year. It was automatically given my the university. Others received scholarships too but not more than $2500. The least I heard was $700. I believe 80% of students receive scholarships each year. I heard few colleges which gave more scholarship at my time. I think most of the scholarships are based on merit rather than admissions.
