WPI Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
WPI admission requirements for Indian students centre on a recognised bachelor’s degree and an English proficiency test, with GRE waived for most STEM MS programmes.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree, or a three-year bachelor’s degree accredited by NAAC with grade A and class rank of Division I or II
- English test: TOEFL iBT 84, IELTS 6.5, or Duolingo English Test 115 for most MS programmes; Business MS requires TOEFL 90 or IELTS 7
- Credential evaluation: WES report recommended for 3-year Indian bachelor holders
- GRE: Not required for most engineering and computer science MS programmes; check each programme page
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 completion with strong performance in mathematics and science, typically 80% and above
- English test: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 7.0, or DET 120
[Source: WPI International Graduate Admissions]
Key insight: Applicants whose bachelor’s degree was taught fully in English can request an English proficiency waiver at WPI, but the university notes that scores below its published minimums count against the file rather than trigger auto-rejection.
WPI Acceptance Rate 2027
WPI acceptance rate stands at 60% overall and 41% for international applicants, per Collegedunia’s admissions data drawn from institutional filings. WPI is moderately selective compared with other STEM-focused private universities in the Northeast.
| Applicant Group | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 60% | Stable band |
| International applicants | 41% | Stricter than overall pool |
Indian applicants compete within the international pool, where academic profile and English scores carry heavier weight. Selective MS programmes such as Data Science and Robotics run tighter cohorts than the university-wide figure suggests.
Reality check: A 60% headline hides the tighter international admit rate at #WPI; Indian applicants should target a 3.3 GPA equivalent (CGPA 7.5/10) or higher to strengthen their file for Robotics and Data Science.

| US News National (USA) | 2026: #84 | 2025: NA | NA |
| Collegedunia Study Abroad | #442 of 824 | NA | NA |
Subject rankings favour WPI’s applied strengths: THE 2026 places Business and Economics at #176-200 and Computer Science at #301-400. QS Masters in Supply Chain Management sits at #71-80 globally. Collegedunia Study Abroad ranks WPI #211 of 357 among USA universities.
[Source: QS, THE, US News, Collegedunia Study Abroad]
Key insight: WPI’s US News National #84 rank matters for US employer recognition and STEM OPT hiring far more than its lower QS World band, which reflects global research volume rather than programme quality.

WPI vs Peer Universities
The peer set below groups WPI with other US STEM-focused private universities plus one Indian benchmark for reference.
| University | QS World 2027 | Collegedunia Study Abroad | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Worcester Polytechnic Institute | #901-950 | #442 of 824 | USD 30,420 (INR 29.1 lakh) | Project-based STEM with 36-month STEM OPT |
| Northeastern University | Higher band | NA | USD 30,000 est. (INR 28.7 lakh) | Co-op programme with paid work terms |
| Rochester Institute of Technology | Similar band | NA | USD 30,000 est. (INR 28.7 lakh) | Applied engineering with strong industry links |
| Stevens Institute of Technology | Similar band | NA | USD 32,000 est. (INR 30.6 lakh) | New York metro STEM placement pipeline |
| IIT Bombay (India reference) | #134 | NA | INR 2 to 3 lakh | Highest-ranked Indian STEM benchmark |
WPI stands out among mid-tier US STEM universities for its Robotics Engineering department, one of the earliest in the US, and its seven-week term structure that lets Indian MS students finish in three semesters.
WPI suits Indian STEM undergraduates targeting a US master’s with a moderate acceptance profile and long OPT runway. Total investment of INR 76 lakh over an 18-month MS against a median starting salary of INR 74 lakh gives a payback window near one year of US employment. STEM OPT of 36 months anchors the value case, backed by USA study visa pathways that recognise WPI’s designation.
WPI is not the fit for applicants chasing a top-100 QS brand or a large-city campus; those buyers should compare Northeastern for co-op-driven placement in Boston or a New York peer for finance-heavy MS routes. Applicants who cannot fund tuition beyond the merit scholarship band should also weigh public STEM universities where in-state adjacent tuition runs lower.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute FAQs
Ques. Does WPI waive the English proficiency test for Indian applicants?
Ans. WPI can waive TOEFL or IELTS if the applicant has completed at least two years of full-time postsecondary study in an English-speaking country within the last five years, or has three or more years of US work experience. Indian applicants whose bachelor’s medium of instruction is English may request a waiver, but WPI reviews these case by case and often prefers a submitted score for competitive MS programmes.
Ques. Is the GRE required for WPI MS admission?
Ans. Most WPI MS programmes, including Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, Data Science, and Mechanical Engineering, do not require the GRE for admission. A few departments still list it as recommended for scholarship consideration. Business PhD applicants must submit a GRE or GMAT score. Indian applicants should verify the exact requirement on the individual programme page before skipping the test.
Ques. How many hours can F-1 students work on campus at WPI?
Ans. F-1 international students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and up to 40 hours per week during official breaks and summer. Typical on-campus roles include Teaching Assistant, Research Assistant, and lab or library support positions. WPI’s International House processes work authorisation and provides social security number letters for on-campus hires.
Ques. How long does STEM OPT last for WPI graduates?
Ans. WPI graduates from STEM-designated programmes qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of US work authorisation post-degree. Most WPI MS degrees including Robotics, Computer Science, Data Science, and engineering fields carry STEM CIP codes. Indian applicants should confirm the CIP designation on the WPI programme page before enrolment.
Ques. Does Worcester Polytechnic Institute accept 3-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. WPI accepts a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree when it is accredited by NAAC with a grade of A and the applicant graduated in Division I or Division II. A WES or equivalent credential evaluation is strongly recommended for such applicants. Holders of a four-year bachelor’s, including BTech and BE degrees, meet the requirement directly without a supplementary evaluation.
Ques. What is the application fee at WPI for Indian applicants?
Ans. WPI charges an application fee of USD 70 (INR 6,700) for graduate applications. The fee is non-refundable and payable by credit card through the online application portal. WPI occasionally waives the fee for applicants who attend recruitment events or partner-school webinars in India. Undergraduate applicants using the Common Application also pay a separate WPI fee at submission.
Ques. Which loan providers finance WPI MS studies for Indian students?
Ans. WPI is recognised by major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, Avanse, InCred, Auxilo, and Prodigy Finance. Public sector banks such as State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda also fund WPI MS admits, typically requiring collateral for amounts above INR 40 lakh. Indian applicants should share the WPI I-20 and cost estimate with lenders during pre-approval to size the loan correctly.
Ques. Can spouses of WPI students work in the United States?
Ans. Spouses of WPI F-1 students hold F-2 dependent visas and cannot work or study full time in the United States under current rules. F-2 dependents may enrol in part-time recreational study only. Spouses of J-1 exchange visitors, which applies to some WPI research scholars rather than degree students, receive J-2 status and can apply for work authorisation. Indian applicants should factor this into family financial planning.

- For robotics there is kind of good faculty here and labs are also fine , basically for the amount you are giving it’s worth it.
Campus Life
- I am pretty sure there is some extracurricular activities happening in college. I am not involved in those, but there is some happening now and then, sports are good, the library is there, and for my department, there is a good number of labs.
Fees
- Around 40k USD

Dislikes
- Could improve an alumni network and have more practical based curriculum
Campus Life
- There are a number of technical and non-technical clubs on the campus; they're mostly run by students and have their events frequently.
Fees
- $1690 per course credit.

Likes
- WPI project based learning curriculum is highly regarded with its distinctive WPI plan allowing us to gain hands on experience through real world experience/applications like mqp and iqp.
- Our university has a global project centre at recreational centre which gives the student with good opportunity to showcase their projects worldwide.
- People are really collaborative here and the staff are encouraging to group work reflecting real world environment problem solving.
Dislikes
- The intense 7 week term system can be challenging as it compresses course material into a shorter time frame with multiple projects bombarding from all subjects with exams and quiz
- The location is pleasant but the town is small and people don't come around often less summer events. Feels isolated
- Career fairs are competitive as like on campus jobs are hard to get and hard to reach
Campus Life
- WPI has three campuses: the main campus in Worcester, Gateway Park (a research facility), and the Seaport location in Boston for corporate programs.
- Our main campus facilities include a 24-hour Gordon Library and a large Sports & Recreation Center with a pool, exercise center, courts, and a climbing wall. We also have a well-equipped health-care center.
- Major events include TouchTomorrow (a STEM festival), Homecoming Weekend, and the Graduate Research Innovation Exchange. The Indian Student Organisation (ISO) actively arranges cultural events such as Diwali and Holi.
- Popular student organisations include the following:
- GSG, ISO, Robotics Club, Game Development Club, and Graduate Women in Science and Engineering are all student organizations.
- We provide intramural leagues, club sports teams, and a variety of fitness classes.
- The International House holds frequent cultural exchange programs and global events.
- Career fairs (fall and spring), networking events, and research symposiums all provide opportunities for professional growth. These activities provide a great balance to academic life and offer excellent networking opportunities.
Fees
- I received a $9,600 scholarship award, which will help offset my total college expenses. The curriculum costs $49,000 over two years, with tuition accounting for the majority of the expense. Additional campus costs are minor, totaling roughly $30 per semester. Breaking it down annually: Total annual cost: $24,500. My scholarship every year is $4,800. My remaining liability is $19,700.
- This grant covers about 20% of my overall tuition expenses, which greatly reduces my financial load. While tuition is the main expense, the low campus fees make the whole cost more accessible. I'll need to pay around $49 each day for my schooling over the course of a complete calendar year, which represents a significant investment in my future.

Dislikes
- Most of them get on campus jobs without any experience.
- The undergraduate courses are much efficient than graduate courses
- The dominance of Technology is quite good in STEM Fields but limited career opportunities.
Campus Life
- My university has only one campus. There are many facilities, such as libraries, sports, gyms, creative centres, medical services, and many more. We also have a university group for celebrating Indian festivals.
Fees
- The course is based on the credits. We should obtain 33 credits, with each subject credible to 3 credits. So we have 11 subjects to complete in MSIT. My total tuition fee is around INR 35,00,000. The college offers semester-wise payments. For students who are financially weak, they also offer monthly payments.
- My living costs come around $800, which includes rent and groceries.

Overview
I used Collegepond for the admission process. They helped me to select colleges and then I applied to them. They also helped in the visa process which is quite good and their service is great and is a good option as well.
Campus Life
The overall campus life is good. Worcester city isn't that lively so during winters it's difficult to enjoy. Overall there are great events in the summer. The campus fest is not the best. Decent enough. The facilities of gym and sports are great at WPI
Overview
Engineering is something that I have allows been passionate about. I hope to use my degree to help people and pursue a career in pharmaceuticals. This college gave me the ability to fully immerse myself in STEM.
