Behaviour, Experience and Mental Processes

Behaviour experience and mental processes in Class 11 Psychology notes

Overt behaviour can be seen directly, such as speaking, smiling or writing. Covert behaviour happens inside the person, such as feeling anxious, remembering a poem or silently planning an answer. Both matter because psychology studies visible action and inner life together.

  • Behaviour: action or response of a person in a setting.
  • Experience: the felt side of life, such as fear, joy, stress or confidence.
  • Mental process: thinking, remembering, judging, problem solving and deciding.

Psychology as a Science and Popular Beliefs

Popular psychology often spreads through casual advice, sayings or media claims. Scientific psychology asks a stricter question: what does careful evidence show? A claim should be clear, checked through method and open to correction.

PointScientific psychologyPopular belief
SourceResearch, observation, test, interview or case studyTradition, media or personal opinion
MethodSystematic and recordedCasual and often unchecked
CorrectionChanges when better evidence appearsMay continue even after exceptions

Historical Growth of Psychology

Psychology grew from philosophical questions about mind into laboratory study and applied work. Structuralism studied conscious experience. Functionalism studied how mental processes help adjustment. Behaviourism focused on observable action. Gestalt psychology studied whole patterns, and cognitive psychology studied thought, memory and problem solving.

Use history to avoid one-sided answers. Psychology is not only mind, only behaviour or only biology. NCERT presents it as a broad subject that connects body, mind, society and culture.

Branches of Psychology in Class 11 Chapter 1

  • Environmental psychology: studies crowding, noise, pollution and environment friendly behaviour.
  • Organisational psychology: studies work behaviour, leadership and job stress.
  • Forensic psychology: connects behaviour with crime, law, victims, witnesses and rehabilitation.
