What Freeze and Upgrade Mean in MET 2026 Counselling

After each round of MET 2026 seat allotment, MAHE presents two choices. Freeze means you accept your current allotment as final. MAHE removes you from the active counselling pool, your seat is confirmed, and you proceed to document verification and campus reporting. No further rounds apply to you.

Upgrade means you remain in the active pool. The system checks your remaining higher preferences against available seats in the next round. If a better seat is vacant and matches a higher preference on your list, your current allotment is released and the new seat is assigned. If no better match is found, your current allotment stays exactly as it is — you do not lose it by choosing upgrade.

When to Freeze Your MET 2026 Seat

Freezing is the right decision in the following situations:

• You received your first or second preference from your choice list and are satisfied with the campus and branch.
• Your allotted branch — such as Computer Science Engineering or Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Manipal (Karnataka) campus — is highly competitive and a spot round upgrade is unlikely to improve on it.
• You want certainty over possibility. Freezing ends your counselling risk — no future deadline to track, no chance of an administrative error costing you a seat.
• You have reviewed your remaining higher preferences and none of them are realistically available given Round 3 fill rates.
• You are already preparing for campus reporting and cannot manage last-minute campus or city changes that a spot round upgrade might require.

Choose the upgrade option if any of these apply:

• You were allotted your third, fourth, or lower preference and a clearly preferred branch or campus is still on your list.
• Your MET rank is competitive and you believe seats in your preferred programme — such as CSE or Mechanical Engineering at Manipal or Jaipur campus — may open up due to surrenders after Round 3.
• You are flexible about which campus you report to and can manage a change to any MAHE campus based on what the spot round offers.
• You have confirmed your Round 3 seat and paid the acceptance fee, but your preference list still has options that would meaningfully improve your academic outcomes.

Choosing upgrade does not put your existing seat at risk unless MAHE finds and allots you a better match. If you have strong unfulfilled preferences and can manage the spot round timeline, the upgrade option is worth considering.

Risks to Know Before Choosing Upgrade

The upgrade path is generally safe but comes with specific risks that require active management:

• Spot round is the final round. If you choose upgrade and the spot round does not allot you a better seat, you must confirm your existing allotment within the spot round fee window — typically 2 to 3 days after the result. Missing this window permanently cancels your seat with no reinstatement.
• Fee deadlines are absolute. MAHE does not grant extensions under any circumstances. Whether you receive a spot round upgrade or retain your original seat, pay the acceptance fee within the stated deadline.
• Spot round seats are limited. Only surrendered and unclaimed seats from all previous rounds enter the spot round pool. If your preferred branch and campus were fully subscribed after Round 3, an upgrade is unlikely.
• Campus change logistics. If the spot round upgrades you to a different campus — for example, from Jaipur to Manipal — you will need to quickly reassess hostel bookings, travel arrangements, and reporting timelines at short notice.
• Upgrade is preference-list bound. An upgrade only moves you to a seat that ranks higher on your own submitted preference list. If your top preferred branches are all taken, the upgrade option will not produce any movement even if seats exist elsewhere in the system.

How to Freeze or Upgrade Your Seat on the Portal

Once the spot round allotment is released, follow these steps at counseling.manipal.edu:

1. Log in with your MET 2026 application number and password.
2. Open the Seat Allotment section to view your allotted college, branch, and campus.
3. Select Freeze to confirm your allotment as final, or select Upgrade to remain eligible for the spot round.
4. Pay the seat acceptance fee (first instalment) before the deadline displayed on the portal.
5. Download and save your allotment letter immediately after confirming.
6. Report to the allotted campus on the date specified in the allotment letter with all original documents and self-attested photocopies.

Documents needed at reporting: Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and passing certificates, MET 2026 rank card, allotment letter, valid photo ID (Aadhaar or passport), category certificate if applicable, and passport-size photographs.
