Educational Qualification Requirements

Your eligibility for INI CET January 2027 depends on the programme you wish to apply for. The degree requirements differ by course category.

For MD and MS programmes, you must hold an MBBS degree from a university or institution recognised by the National Medical Commission. The MBBS must be a full degree — a provisional pass certificate or part-completion is not accepted.

For MDS programmes, the requirement is a BDS degree from an institution recognised by the Dental Council of India. MDS seats at AIIMS institutions are offered in select dental specialties; confirm available specialties in the official prospectus.

For DM and MCh 3-year super-specialty programmes, you must hold an MD, MS or DNB degree in a specialty that is relevant to the super-specialty you are applying for. AIIMS publishes a specialty-to-super-specialty eligibility mapping in the official prospectus each session.

For DM and MCh 5-year integrated programmes, the entry-level qualification is an MBBS degree. These are direct MBBS-to-super-specialty programmes and do not require a prior MD or MS.

Degrees obtained from foreign medical universities are not automatically accepted. If you hold a foreign medical degree, you must obtain an eligibility certificate from NMC and clear FMGE or NExT as applicable before you are eligible to apply for INI CET January 2027.

Internship Completion Deadline

You must complete your compulsory rotatory internship on or before 31 December 2026 to be eligible for INI CET January 2027. Students who are still serving their internship at the time of application but will complete it before this date are permitted to apply.

However, you must submit proof of internship completion at the time of document verification and at joining. If your certificate is not available by that stage, your admission is liable to be cancelled regardless of your rank.

If your internship completion date falls after 31 December 2026, you will not be eligible for the January 2027 session. You may then consider the July 2027 session, for which the internship deadline is typically 30 June 2027 (subject to official notification).

Keep the following documents ready to establish internship completion:

  • Internship completion certificate issued by your medical college or attached hospital.
  • Certificate countersigned by the Principal or Medical Superintendent as required by AIIMS.
  • Registration certificate from NMC or State Medical Council updated to reflect completion of internship.

Age Limit for INI CET January 2027

There is no upper age limit for INI CET January 2027. AIIMS New Delhi and the participating Institutes of National Importance do not prescribe a maximum age for appearing in the entrance test or for admission to MD, MS, MDS, DM or MCh programmes.

This means students who graduated several years ago, took a career break, or are appearing after multiple earlier attempts are fully eligible provided they meet all other conditions. The absence of an age bar is consistent with the broader policy followed by the National Medical Commission for postgraduate medical admissions in India.

There is also no minimum age requirement beyond what is implied by holding a complete MBBS degree, which itself takes a minimum of five and a half years after Class 12 including internship.

Attempt Limit

INI CET has no cap on the number of attempts. You can appear in every January and July session as many times as needed until you secure admission to a programme of your choice.

Each INI CET session counts as a separate appearance. Your score from a previous session is not carried forward to the next — you must qualify in the specific session for which you want admission. There is no cumulative attempt count maintained across sessions by AIIMS.

This open-attempt policy is especially relevant for students who:

  • Did not qualify or score high enough in an earlier session to get a preferred seat.
  • Qualified previously but did not find a suitable programme or institution during counselling.
  • Are currently enrolled in a postgraduate programme and wish to switch specialty or institution.
  • Took time off after MBBS and are re-entering the entrance exam cycle.

NMC Registration Requirement

A valid registration with the National Medical Commission or any State Medical Council is mandatory for applying to INI CET January 2027. You must hold this registration at the time of submitting the application form.

Students who have recently completed internship and are awaiting permanent registration may be permitted to apply with a provisional registration. AIIMS typically accepts a provisional NMC or State Council registration at the application stage, with permanent registration required at the time of document verification or joining. Confirm this provision once the official notification for INI CET January 2027 is released, as the exact rule is stated in the prospectus.

Doctors who completed MBBS from an institution outside India must first clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or the National Exit Test (NExT) as applicable and obtain full NMC registration before applying for INI CET January 2027.

Category-wise Eligibility and Reservation

The academic eligibility criteria are identical across all categories. However, INI CET January 2027 offers seats under multiple reservation categories as per Government of India norms. Applying under the correct category is important because it determines the seat pool available to you during counselling.

Category Reservation Percentage Key Document Required
Unreserved (General / EWS Open Merit) Open merit seats Not applicable
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 27% OBC-NCL certificate from competent authority
SC 15% Caste certificate from competent authority
ST 7.5% Tribe certificate from competent authority
EWS 10% EWS income certificate for applicable financial year
PwD (Divyangjan) 5% horizontal across all categories Disability certificate from recognised medical board
Foreign / OCI / NRI As per individual institute notification Passport, OCI card or NRI sponsorship as applicable

To claim OBC (NCL) reservation, your caste certificate must specifically state that you do not belong to the creamy layer. Certificates older than one year from the application date may not be accepted — verify the validity requirement in the official INI CET January 2027 prospectus once published.

EWS certificates must be issued for the financial year specified in the official notification. AIIMS states the applicable financial year in the prospectus. An EWS certificate for the wrong year will be rejected during document verification.
