University of New South Wales Tuition Deposit and Payment Options

The acceptance deposit varies, due within four weeks of accepting the offer, and it releases the CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment, the document needed for the subclass 500 Student Visa). The deposit is credited against your first-year tuition, not on top of it, and is refundable only if the visa is refused with evidence.

Methods of Payment

  • Convera (UNSW’s own portal): UNSW routes international tuition through Convera, which quotes an INR-to-AUD rate 2-3% better than a raw SWIFT wire; the exchange is locked for 72 hours after quote.
  • Bank wire (telegraphic transfer): Direct wire from an Indian bank works, but charges A$25-40 per transaction and gives you the SWIFT-desk rate, not the interbank rate.
  • Forex card (Niyo/HDFC/Axis/ICICI): Load AUD when the rate is favourable; useful for the deposit if you have the funds pre-arranged.
  • Education-loan disbursement: HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, and Prodigy Finance disburse directly to UNSW in AUD; the loan sanction takes 4-6 weeks and must be in hand before the deposit deadline.

Steps to Pay Tuition Fees for International Students

  1. Accept the UNSW offer online through myUNSW.
  2. Pay the acceptance deposit through Convera within four weeks.
  3. Receive the CoE by email, usually within 3-5 working days of the deposit clearing.
  4. Submit the subclass 500 visa application on the Home Affairs portal using the CoE and OSHC number.
  5. Pay the balance of Term 1 tuition by the census date, which is usually four weeks after the term start.
  6. Keep every receipt and Convera confirmation for the visa financial-capacity file.

Hidden Costs of Studying at University of New South Wales

Beyond tuition and rent, first-year hidden costs for a Term 1 2027 Indian entrant total roughly ₹6-7 Lakhs, most of it front-loaded before you land in Sydney.

  • Subclass 500 Student Visa fee: A$2,000 (₹1.35 Lakhs), paid once at application.
  • OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover): A$800 per year single-cover, but the full policy duration is paid upfront, so a two-year Master’s charges A$1,600 (₹1.08 Lakhs) at the visa stage.
  • Bond and setup: Sydney rentals need 4 weeks’ bond plus first-fortnight rent, roughly A$3,400 (₹2.29 Lakhs) on a share house, plus bedding and kitchen kit at A$600-800 (₹40,440-53,920).
  • Airfare Delhi/Mumbai to Sydney: A$1,300-1,700 (₹87,620-1,14,580) return, higher in the January-February visa season.
  • SSAF (Student Services and Amenities Fee): A$365 (₹24,601) per year, compulsory.
  • Textbooks and course materials: A$600-800 (₹40,440-53,920) per year; use the UNSW library and secondhand groups to cut this.
  • IELTS retake: A$490 (₹33,026) if your first band drops one requirement.

Budget ₹6-7 Lakhs for first-year hidden costs on top of tuition and living, and hold ₹2 Lakhs as a buffer for the first 30 days in Sydney while the Indian bank account and OSHC card are being set up.

Note: The hidden cost that Indian families most often forget is OSHC paid upfront for the whole policy. A four-year Bachelor’s pays A$3,200 (₹2.16 Lakhs) at visa stage, not A$800 per year, because the visa needs cover for the full enrolment length.

Fee Saving Strategies for University of New South Wales Students

The highest-value saving for a Term 1 2027 Indian entrant is stacking the UNSW International Student Award (20% off) with a share-house living arrangement and Section 80E interest deduction.

  • International Student Award (20%): Automatic reduction on tuition every year; on a Master of Commerce, that is A$12,400 (₹8.36 Lakhs) off per year, or ₹16.72 Lakhs over the degree.
  • Share-house over studio: Renting a room in Randwick or Kingsford instead of a Kensington studio saves roughly ₹9-10 Lakhs over two years.
  • Part-time work: Australia allows 48 hours per fortnight during term. At A$26-32 per hour (barista, retail, tutoring), a student earning 40 hours per fortnight covers about A$26,000 (₹17.52 Lakhs) of yearly living costs.
  • Post-Study Work stream (subclass 485): A Master’s completed in Sydney qualifies for a 2-year post-study work visa, and Sydney tech and finance salaries start at A$70,000-90,000 (₹47.18-60.66 Lakhs) per year, so the loan is largely repayable inside the visa window.
  • Section 80E: Interest on your Indian education loan is fully deductible from taxable income for up to 8 years starting the year you begin repayment; on a ₹50 Lakh loan the deduction is roughly ₹4-5 Lakhs of interest per year.
  • Pick the lower-fee UOC track: Some UNSW Master’s programmes let you pick electives from lower-band schools (arts A$985 per UOC vs engineering A$1,270 per UOC). Twelve UOC swapped saves about A$3,420 (₹2.30 Lakhs) across the degree.

Tip for Indian Students: The single highest-value lever for T1 2027 is the International Student Award: 20% tuition reduction, ~₹8.36 Lakhs per year saved on a Master of Commerce. Submit the 500-word statement with your UNSW application, not after acceptance, so the discount is applied to the very first instalment.

Plan for a Year 1 outlay of ₹57-69 Lakhs at UNSW depending on programme, and a full-degree cost between ₹1.11 Crore (two-year Master of IT) and ₹2.50 Crore (four-year Bachelor of Engineering Honours). The single controllable saving is the International Student Award, worth about ₹8.36 Lakhs per year on the higher-band Master’s. A ₹50 Lakh education loan carries an EMI of roughly ₹67,000 per month against a Sydney starting salary of A$70,000-95,000 (₹47.18-64.03 Lakhs), which the 2-year subclass 485 Post-Study Work stream comfortably supports. Submit the 500-word ISA statement with the T1 2027 UNSW application, before the 30 November 2026 deadline, to lock in the discount on your very first instalment.

University of New South Wales Fees FAQs

Ques. Is UNSW cheaper than the University of Melbourne?

Ans. UNSW and Melbourne are within A$1,000-3,000 per year on most Master’s programmes. UNSW’s Master of Commerce at A$62,000 (₹41.79 Lakhs) is roughly A$2,500 (₹1.69 Lakhs) cheaper than Melbourne’s Master of Commerce annually, while engineering programmes are almost identical.

Ques. How much education loan do I need for UNSW?

Ans. Most Indian students at UNSW take a ₹40-55 Lakh loan for a two-year Master’s, covering roughly half the total cost, with the rest funded from family contribution and part-time work. A ₹50 Lakh loan at 10.5% over 10 years works out to an EMI of about ₹67,000 per month; a ₹1 Crore loan is closer to ₹1.35 Lakhs per month.

Ques. Can I pay UNSW fees in instalments?

Ans. Yes. UNSW charges tuition term by term, not annually, and each Master’s year is split across three terms. So a A$45,000 (₹30.33 Lakhs) Master of IT year is billed as roughly A$15,000 (₹10.11 Lakhs) per term, due by each term’s census date. There is no lump-sum discount for pre-paying a year.

Ques. Do UNSW fees rise every year?

Ans. Yes. UNSW international fees have risen 4.10% to 8.06% per year between 2023 and 2026 on engineering programmes, and similar percentages on business and science. Any Term 1 2027 entry will be billed at the 2027 rate, published by UNSW in October 2026.

Ques. Does UNSW charge the same tuition to all international students?

Ans. Yes. UNSW’s international rate is uniform across nationalities, so Indian students pay the same fee as students from China, USA, Vietnam, or Singapore. Domestic Australian rates do not apply to Indian citizens, even those on permanent residency pathways, unless the student is already an Australian citizen or PR holder.
