Work experience Optional Not required but helpful if your GPA is borderline (2.8–3.0). Two years of professional experience can strengthen the application.
Statement of intent Required; 1–2 pages Clearly state why you chose this specialization and your career goals post-graduation.
References Two academic or professional letters At least one must be from a faculty member if not employed; recent graduate within two years may use a professional referee.

English Language Proficiency for MEng Civil Engineering

All international applicants must prove English language competency via standardized testing. Concordia accepts IELTS and TOEFL but not Duolingo or PTE for graduate admission.

Test Minimum Overall Minimum by Component Processing Time
IELTS (Academic) 6.5 Reading 6.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.5, Listening 6.0 13 calendar days
TOEFL iBT 90 Reading 19, Writing 18, Speaking 19, Listening 17 3–5 business days
  • IELTS 6.5 is achievable in 8–10 weeks of focused study; many Indian students clear it on the first attempt.
  • TOEFL iBT 90 is slightly more difficult; prepare if you excel at reading/grammar but struggle with spoken English.
  • Both tests are valid for two years; plan your test date so results arrive by the application deadline.
Tip for Indian students: If your IELTS or TOEFL is below the minimum, some graduate programs offer conditional admission; you attend an English support course before the main program starts, adding one semester of cost and time.

Canada Visa Pathway for Concordia MEng Civil Engineering 2026

After graduating from Concordia’s MEng program, international students are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The PGWP allows you to work in Canada for up to three years without an employer sponsor. Most MEng graduates use this time to gain Canadian work experience and then transition to permanent residency.

  • PGWP duration: equal to your program length (maximum four years); MEng is two years, so your permit is two years.
  • Work permit processing: four to eight weeks; apply at or before graduation; extensions available if you continue studies.
  • Skilled worker visa: After one year of Canadian work experience and salary above C$62,000, you are eligible for Express Entry or Ontario PNP, which leads to permanent residency within 12–18 months.
  • Spouse/dependent visa: Your spouse can apply for an open work permit (no employer tie) while you work on the PGWP; dependent children are covered under your permit.
Visa reality: PGWP + one year of work experience + Express Entry = Canadian permanent residency by year three post-graduation. Plan your finances and job search timeline accordingly.

Master of Engineering (MEng) Civil Engineering FAQs

Ques. Is the MEng Civil Engineering program from Concordia recognized internationally?

Ans. Yes. Concordia’s engineering programs are accredited by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and the Engineers Geoscientists Quebec (OIQ). This recognition allows graduates to pursue professional engineering licensure (P.Eng) in Canadian provinces and reciprocal recognition in Australia, New Zealand, UK, and parts of the USA via international agreements.

Ques. Can I complete the MEng Civil Engineering program part-time?

Ans. No. The MEng Civil Engineering program is full-time only (minimum 45 credits, no part-time option). However, you can adjust your course load each term (for example, 6–9 credits/term instead of the standard 12 credits), which stretches the program to three to four years. Part-time load may affect your student visa status; consult Concordia’s international office before applying.

Ques. What is the IELTS score required if my bachelor’s degree was taught in English?

Ans. If your bachelor’s degree was completed at an English-medium university (or a Canadian/US/UK institution), you may request a waiver of the IELTS/TOEFL requirement. Concordia requires official documentation (diploma in English, transcript in English, university’s accreditation proof). The waiver decision takes 2–3 weeks; apply when submitting your graduate admissions application.

Ques. Are there specializations or tracks within the MEng Civil Engineering program?

Ans. The MEng is course-based, not research-thesis based, so there are no formal tracks. However, you choose electives in areas like structures and earthquake engineering, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources engineering, or environmental engineering. Advise your academic advisor of your preferred area; they will recommend electives aligned to your goal.

Ques. What is the difference between Concordia’s MEng and thesis-based Master of Science (MSc)?

Ans. The MEng is course-based (45 credits, no thesis, two years); the MSc is research-based (30–45 credits plus a thesis, two to three years, lower tuition per credit but requires lab work). MEng suits professionals seeking fast upskilling and entry into industry; MSc suits students pursuing PhDs or research careers. Tuition is identical (C$795/credit), but MSc students often secure RA funding from supervisors.

Concordia University’s MEng Civil Engineering program bridges undergraduate foundations and professional practice. The two-year duration, affordable Montreal location, and QS #38 ranking make it competitive for Indian students aiming to work and immigrate to Canada. Apply early for Winter 2027 intake; Fall 2026 has closed.
