Memorial University was established in 1925, with five faculty members and 55 full-time students as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who sacrificed their lives in the First World War. The university has over 18,000 students currently. There are more than 2700 international students from 110 countries enrolled at the University which makes up 15% of the total undergraduate student population and one-third of the graduate students. The University is known for having the highest number of full-time international students in master’s and doctoral programs all across Canada.

The University offers more than 100 certificate, diplomas, undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs on its 4 campuses in St. John’s and Corner Brook, N.L., and Harlow, Essex, and online. Memorial University offers a number of unique programs such as co-op in Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering, MBA in social enterprise and entrepreneurship, joint degree in music and business, first to offer Master of Occupational Health and Safety in Atlantic Canada. It also offers the only 4 year bachelor of fine arts in acting or theatre production. It is the only Anglophone University across Canada to offer folklore programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Students applying for undergraduate studies during the spring of 2020 semester and expressing concern about the impact of COVID-19 on their travel should e-mail to delay their term of study.
  • For the fall semester, Memorial University will welcome new and returning students back in a primarily remote environment for teaching and learning. Courses on campus will not resume in person, and will not take place until January 2021.
  • The university is accepting couriers and mail packages for the submission of documents. However, it may take 7 to 14 days for the admission office to access the information and process the applications.
