Memorial University of Newfoundland, commonly called MUN, is a public research university headquartered in St. John’s, Canada, ranked #721-730 in the QS World University Rankings 2027. It operates across three domestic campuses plus a partner site in Harlow, and covers programmes from petroleum engineering to marine sciences.

The Faculty of Business Administration runs MBA and Master’s in Management degrees that Indian students commonly target, while the Department of Computer Science delivers MS Computer Science across Fall and Winter intakes. Memorial University teaches entirely in English, offers IELTS waivers for Indian applicants with English-medium bachelor’s degrees, and lists 250+ scholarships open to international candidates. Its Petroleum Engineering programme ranks #51-100 globally in the QS Subject Rankings 2025, a niche credential Indian graduates use to enter Canada’s offshore energy sector.

  • QS World Rank 2027: #721-730
  • Acceptance Rate: 68-78% (estimated)
  • Intakes: Fall (September), Winter (January), Spring (May)
  • PG Tuition: CAD 4,833 to 18,746 per year (INR 3.36 to 13.03 lakh)
  • Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years under Canada PGWP

Memorial University’s tuition sits well below the national average for Canadian research universities, making it a low-fee entry point for Indian applicants weighing MS universities in Canada. Its India Merit Scholarship stacks with faculty-level entrance awards, and Newfoundland’s cost of living runs 20-30% lower than most Tier-1 Canadian universities.

Exchange rate used: 1 CAD = INR 69.5 as of August 2026

Admission Status: Open (Fall 2027 intake). Primary Fall 2027 deadlines for Indian applicants are December 1, 2026 for MS Computer Science and Master’s in Management, February 1, 2027 for the MBA international round, and April 1, 2027 for engineering MEng programmes. Winter 2027 undergraduate applications close December 13, 2026, and Winter 2027 MBA (limited seats) closes February 28, 2027.

Popular Courses and Fees at MUN 2027

Memorial University of Newfoundland Admission 2027

Memorial University of Newfoundland runs three intakes per year, with Fall (September) as the primary intake for Indian applicants across every faculty. Deadlines vary sharply between undergraduate and graduate programmes and are set by each department, not a central admissions office.

MUN UG Admission Dates 2027

Undergraduate admissions run on programme-wide dates published by the Registrar and apply to all Indian applicants.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
Winter 2027 UG deadlineDecember 13, 2026Applies to BSc, BEng, BN and BEd streams accepting winter entry
Fall 2027 UG deadlineAugust 13, 2027Primary intake; apply 6 months earlier for study permit buffer
Credential verification (WES)Start 8 weeks before deadlineWES ICAP mandatory for Indian Class 12 marksheets
Programme start (Fall)September 2027Orientation runs the week before classes begin

MUN PG Admission Dates 2027

Graduate programmes publish separate deadlines per department, so Indian applicants must map their target programme’s own cut-off rather than assume a single university date.

MilestoneDateNotes for Indian Applicants
MS Computer Science / MS Management Fall 2027December 1, 2026Earliest hard deadline; applications open now
MBA Fall 2027 (international round)February 1, 2027Separate Canadian round closes later; Indians must meet Feb 1
Engineering MEng Fall 2027April 1, 2027Mechanical, Civil, Process, Electrical and Computer streams
Programme start (Fall)September 2027APS verification not required for Canadian entry

Planning note: Study permit processing from India ran 8 to 14 weeks in early 2026, so target an offer letter at least 4 months before the intake to leave a safe biometrics and medical exam window.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Memorial University sets the eligibility bar as a recognised bachelor’s degree with a minimum second-class grade for PG and Class 12 Board results for UG, with English-proficiency scores that vary between undergraduate and graduate schools.

PG Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree: Three or four year Indian bachelor’s with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); MBA accepts 60% or CGPA 6.0/10
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90 with 25 in Speaking and Writing plus 20 in Reading and Listening; IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Writing and Speaking, 6.0 in Reading and Listening; PTE Academic 65 overall; Duolingo 115
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for Indian marksheets; upload before the departmental deadline
  • Standout requirement: Two academic references and a research statement mandatory for thesis-route master’s; GMAT/GRE waivable for MBA with 3+ years of post-qualification work experience

UG Requirements

  • Class 12 academics: CBSE, ICSE or state board with 70% aggregate for BSc and BN, 75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for BEng streams (recommended)
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 83 with 20 in Reading and Writing; IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Reading and Writing; Duolingo 115
  • Waiver: Class 12 English scores of 70%+ from CBSE or ICSE waive the English test on request; requires a letter of English-medium instruction

Key insight: Memorial University does not require a mandatory GRE for MS Computer Science, unlike most peer Canadian universities. This alone shortens Indian preparation timelines by 3 to 4 months.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Acceptance Rate 2027

Memorial University does not publish an official acceptance rate, but third-party admissions data places the overall selectivity between 68% and 78% (estimated). Selectivity tightens sharply at the graduate level, with MS Computer Science and MBA cohorts operating on cohort caps rather than open enrolment.

Undergraduate arts and science admissions are the least competitive tier, while professional programmes such as Nursing, Medicine and MBA screen more aggressively on written statements and prerequisites.

Reality check: A 68-78% headline rate does not mean 7 in 10 Indian applicants get in. Programme-level acceptance for MS Computer Science and MBA sits well below the university average because seats are capped per intake.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Campus, Facilities and Student Life

Memorial University’s flagship campus sits in St. John’s on Canada’s east coast, with a second full campus at Grenfell in Corner Brook and the Marine Institute serving offshore and maritime programmes. St. John’s runs on a mid-sized-city rhythm that Indian students find calmer than Toronto or Montreal.

  • Location and transport: St. John’s campus is on Elizabeth Avenue, 10 minutes from downtown by Metrobus; Grenfell is a 30-minute drive from Corner Brook airport
  • Housing: On-campus residences guaranteed for first-year internationals if applied by June 1; off-campus rent runs CAD 700 to 1,100 for shared accommodation
  • Notable facility: The Ocean Sciences Centre in Logy Bay is one of North America’s largest cold-ocean research stations, feeding into the Marine Institute
  • Indian community: Indian Students Society at MUN runs Diwali, Holi and cricket meets; peer-mentor programme pairs new arrivals with senior Indian students

What Indian students say: St. John’s winters are long and heavy on snow, so budget CAD 400-600 in the first month for a proper parka and boots. Bus service pauses on some holidays, so students in off-campus shared housing prefer locations within 20 minutes of the campus.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Scholarships 2027

Memorial University lists over 250 scholarships open to international candidates, with a small subset carrying explicit India-nationality eligibility or preferences. Most entrance awards are auto-considered from the admission application, so no separate scholarship form is required for these.

Memorial University of Newfoundland Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Memorial University’s Career Development office runs the MUCEP work-study, MyExperience portal, and industry-connect events, with strong pipelines into Newfoundland’s energy, marine and health sectors.

  • Employment within 6 months: 90%+ across the MBA, MEng and MS Computer Science cohorts (institutional disclosure, not audited)
  • Median starting salary: CAD 55,000 to 75,000 for STEM and business master’s (market median; INR 38.23 to 52.13 lakh)
  • Top recruiting sectors: Oil and gas exploration, marine research, healthcare, provincial government, software services
  • Career support: MUN Works job board with 3,000+ live postings, dedicated international student advisor, and PGWP application clinics each semester
  • Post-study work: Up to 3 years under Canada PGWP; Newfoundland PNP International Graduate stream fast-tracks PR for MUN graduates in critical occupations

Insider note: Indian graduates in ocean and petroleum engineering are actively recruited by Cenovus, Suncor and Equinor Canada, all with St. John’s offices. This is one of the few Canadian cities where energy roles regularly hire fresh international master’s talent.

Memorial University of Newfoundland vs Peer Universities

The natural peer set is other mid-tier Canadian public research universities that Indian applicants often shortlist alongside Memorial University for affordability and PGWP pathways.

UniversityQS World RankCollegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG FeeDifferentiator
Memorial University of Newfoundland#721-730 (2027)#488CAD 4,833 to 18,746 (INR 3.36 to 13.03 lakh)Lowest PG tuition among Canadian publics; petroleum and marine strength
Dalhousie University#308 (QS 2026, verify)NACAD 22,000 to 30,000 (INR 15.29 to 20.85 lakh, estimated)Higher rank and Halifax location; premium fees
University of Saskatchewan#345 (QS 2026, verify)NACAD 8,000 to 20,000 (INR 5.56 to 13.90 lakh, estimated)Strong agriculture and public health; larger PR pathway pool
University of Manitoba#623 (QS 2026, verify)NACAD 10,000 to 21,000 (INR 6.95 to 14.60 lakh, estimated)Winnipeg engineering hub; larger Indian student base

Memorial University stands out on two axes: lowest headline tuition among Canadian public research universities and a documented pipeline into offshore energy roles. It trails the peer group on QS position and does not carry a medical or law school comparable to Dalhousie’s, so applicants targeting those disciplines will look elsewhere.

Memorial University of Newfoundland fits Indian students who prize affordability, want a research-oriented public campus, and are comfortable with Atlantic Canada’s slower-paced city life. A total two-year MBA investment of INR 25.68 lakh against a market-median starting salary of INR 45 lakh gives one of the strongest ROI ratios in Canadian PG education, backed by the Newfoundland PNP International Graduate stream that speeds up study in Canada to PR conversion.

Memorial University is not the right pick for applicants who need medicine or law, want a Tier-1 metro address like Toronto or Montreal, or aim at bulge-bracket investment banking recruitment. A realistic alternative is Dalhousie University in Halifax for higher-ranked programmes with a similar Atlantic Canada campus profile.

Memorial University of Newfoundland FAQs

Ques. What is the application fee at Memorial University of Newfoundland?

Ans. Memorial University charges an application fee of CAD 120 (INR 8,340) for graduate programmes and CAD 300 (INR 20,850) for undergraduate international applicants. Payment is online at the time of application via credit card. The fee is non-refundable and applies per programme, so applicants targeting multiple departments pay per submission. Fee waivers are rare and limited to specific bilateral scholarship pathways.

Ques. Can Indian students get IELTS waivers at MUN?

Ans. Yes. MUN waives IELTS or TOEFL for Indian applicants whose Class 12 or bachelor’s degree was fully English-medium at a recognised board or university. The applicant must upload a signed letter of English medium of instruction from the school or university, and the Admissions Committee approves waivers case-by-case. CBSE and ICSE Class 12 with 70% in English typically clear the bar for undergraduate entry.

Ques. How do I verify my transcripts for Memorial University of Newfoundland admission?

Ans. Indian applicants must send transcripts through WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for graduate admission and through direct upload for undergraduate. WES turnaround runs 20 to 35 working days once documents are received, so start the process 8 to 10 weeks before the departmental deadline. The Registrar accepts the WES report directly, with no separate apostille required for admission.

Ques. Does MUN accept the Duolingo English Test for admission?

Ans. Yes. Memorial University accepts the Duolingo English Test with a minimum overall score of 115 for both undergraduate and graduate programmes. Scores must be sent electronically from the Duolingo platform to Memorial University within two years of the test date. Some professional programmes such as Nursing and Pharmacy prefer IELTS or TOEFL, so applicants should check department-level clarifications.

Ques. What is the deposit amount to confirm admission at MUN?

Ans. Undergraduate admits pay a tuition deposit of CAD 1,500 (INR 1.04 lakh) to confirm their seat, while selected graduate programmes charge up to CAD 2,000 (INR 1.39 lakh). The deposit is adjusted against the first-semester tuition invoice. Refunds are available only if a study permit is refused with documented evidence, subject to the university’s refund policy and application deadline compliance.

Ques. Are part-time work hours capped for Indian students at Memorial University of Newfoundland?

Ans. Indian students on a valid Canadian study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks. On-campus work has no hour limit, so MUCEP work-study roles and teaching assistantships do not count against the 24-hour cap. Employment must not be the primary purpose of the study permit under Canadian regulations.

Ques. Which Indian education loan providers cover MUN tuition?

Ans. SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Bank of Baroda’s Baroda Scholar scheme all fund Memorial University admits up to INR 1.5 crore. MUN’s QS World rank inside 800 clears the ranking threshold used by state education loan boards, and the university’s DLI status makes it eligible for Canada Student Direct Stream loan-supported study permits. Loans typically cover tuition, living costs and travel.

Ques. How long does dependent visa processing take for Memorial University of Newfoundland students?

Ans. Spouse open work permits and dependent study permits for children of MUN admits ran 8 to 16 weeks in early 2026 when filed from India. Dependents must file separately from the main study permit and prove financial capacity of CAD 4,000 per dependent per year over the base living cost. Master’s and PhD student spouses are eligible for open work permits under the current IRCC policy.

Campus Life

  • In St. John's, it’s only one campus which is the main campus of memorial university, there are so many fest celebrated in the university in terms of Indian festivals, last year we celebrated Holi, Diwali, Republic Day, etc.
  • For sports and extracurricular activities we have a football ground, baseball ground. We have a swimming pool building with multiple pools called Aquarina, now they are hosting Canada games this year in the Aquarina so currently it is not useable for students.
  • Then we have a big gym, which has all the facilities and courts for badminton, tennis, racquetball and basketball. Also, we have a library with equipped computers for everyone free of cost even after you graduate like 3-D printers for cheaper price and normal printers as well.

Fees

  • For me every semester it was around $3300, Yearly $10,000. Which included only university fees like semester fees, recreation fees, Graduated Union fees, etc. University on campus living is expensive so I lived outside only always.
  • My monthly expense was $1000 a month. Including rent, groceries, utilities, bus pass, phone bill, everything. For undergraduate student the fees are course based(credit wise) so its expensive for them.

Overview

English language proficiency test results, 12th marksheet is required. Done go for consultants. Do your own research of what programs you want. If you ndont have your 12th marksheet ready, apply with your 11th marksheet and they may give you a provisional acceptance. Present 12th marksheet to get the final acceptance letter. Their acceptance process is quite slow.

Campus Life

There is no fun in campus. Infrastructure is not special. It's quite basic can use renovations. No campus festivals. Boring as boring can be. There is plenty sports facilities.

Overview

My experience at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) has been nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I stepped onto the campus, I knew I had made the right choice. The warm and welcoming atmosphere, coupled with the breathtaking views of St. John's and the Atlantic Ocean, created the perfect setting for my university journey. One of the highlights of my time at MUN has been the academic quality and the supportive faculty. The professors are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely invested in their students' success. The smaller class sizes allowed for more personalized attention and meaningful interactions with professors, which enriched my learning experience. Beyond academics, the campus life at MUN was vibrant and engaging. There was never a shortage of student organizations and clubs to get involved with. I joined a few clubs related to my interests, which helped me make new friends and find a sense of community within the university. As an international student, I appreciated the diversity at MUN. Interacting with people from various backgrounds and cultures broadened my perspectives and enriched my overall experience. The university's commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming environment for all students was evident throughout my time there. The location of MUN in St. John's was also a huge plus. Exploring the city's unique culture, trying out local cuisine, and enjoying outdoor activities in the surrounding natural beauty became an integral part of my life. The city offered a perfect balance between academics and leisure, making my university years unforgettable. The support services at MUN were also commendable. The academic advisors and career counselors were always available to guide and assist students in achieving their goals. Whenever I faced challenges, there was a safety net of resources to help me navigate through them successfully. Additionally, being part of research projects during my upper years was a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into my field of study and gain valuable experience that has benefited me after graduation. As I look back on my time at MUN, I am grateful for the memories, the friends I've made, the knowledge I've gained, and the personal growth I've experienced. Memorial University of Newfoundland has provided me with an exceptional education and a supportive community, setting me on a path for a successful future.

Overview

So far it has been excellent. So many opportunities right from working as TA to being vide president in IYA to COOP , there has been wide areas to explore and learn and has definitely expanded my skillset as a software engineer.

Not just the university , every single place here has Wifi. So there is no need to have internet pack in mobile. Most of the professors will be doing research on their specialized areas and if anyone is interested to be apart of that, they can approach the professors anytime and if they have an opening, they will take you in. Basically, all all these are very transparent. TA opportunities are also transparent and if you remain active in looking for opportunities you can easily grab one. I worked as TA and the pay is also very good. Music, dance, regional club, volunteering activities etc. , name anything it is available.

The best thing about this campus is interconnectivity of all the buildings. There is a tunnel which connects canteen to class, lab to library, during winter this tunnel becomes very useful. There are many other activities like gym, indoor playground and swimming pool which are free to access for students.

There are a lots of clubs and at least a handful of them could pique your interest. Extensive WIFI coverage throughout the campus. Navigating between campus can be very easy once you get accustomed to the MUN tunnels, they're the best especially during winters. They have built a new facility that has more research labs for Robotics and Marine life sciences.
