St. Francis Xavier University, known widely as StFX, is a public undergraduate-focused Catholic university located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Founded in 1853, StFX ranks #40 in Canada on the Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 list and holds a Top 5 tier position in Maclean’s Primarily Undergraduate category 2024.

The university offers 40+ bachelor’s programmes across arts, business, science, education and nursing, plus master’s degrees in adult education, applied science, curriculum, nursing and public policy. All teaching runs in English, and Indian applicants are handled by a dedicated liaison at MS universities in Canada recruiter network via india@stfx.ca. The Coady Institute anchors StFX’s international-development reputation, which is a key draw for Indian applicants in public policy and adult education.

St. Francis Xavier University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

StFX applies programme-specific academic thresholds for Indian applicants, and English proficiency is mandatory for all international students.

StFX PG Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended) for master’s programmes; 70% or CGPA 7.0/10 (recommended) for MSc research streams
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale) with 20 in each section, PTE 60, or Duolingo 115
  • Credential verification: WES course-by-course evaluation of the bachelor’s transcript
  • Research programmes: Two academic references and a research statement matched to a faculty supervisor

StFX UG Requirements for Indian Applicants

  • Academic: Class 12 CBSE, ISC or State board with 70% to 80% (recommended); 80% for BSc Nursing and Health Sciences (recommended)
  • English: IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale), PTE 60, or Duolingo 115

Key insight: StFX waives the English test for Indian applicants who completed Class 11 and 12 in an English-medium school and can submit a signed medium-of-instruction letter on school letterhead. This route saves the IELTS fee and one to two months of preparation.

St. Francis Xavier University Acceptance Rate 2027

StFX does not publish an official acceptance rate, and the working estimate for undergraduate international applications sits at 75% to 80% (estimated). The rate reflects a small liberal-arts admissions model where fit and academic minimums drive decisions rather than a hard yield cap.

Nursing and Health Sciences run tighter than the university average due to clinical placement caps. BBA and Arts programmes typically clear qualified Indian applicants within four weeks of a complete file.

Reality check: A 75% acceptance rate does not mean easy admission for weak files; StFX rejects incomplete applications and files missing the medium-of-instruction letter or a WES evaluation. Complete files with 75% Class 12 marks clear most Arts and Science streams.

St. Francis Xavier University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

StFX sits on a 355-acre campus in the town of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, a three-hour drive from Halifax International Airport.

  • Location and transport: Halifax airport connects via a Maritime Bus shuttle to Antigonish town centre, and the campus is walkable end-to-end
  • Housing: Residence guarantee for first-year international students, monthly cost CAD 900 to CAD 1,100 with meal plan included
  • Coady Institute: On-campus international-development think tank drawing Indian development-sector applicants for master’s and short-course cohorts
  • Indian community: Small but active Indian Students Association hosting Diwali and Holi events on campus, with vegetarian meal-plan options

What Indian students say: Class sizes stay under 30 across most programmes and faculty know students by name, which changes the recommendation-letter and research-supervisor experience compared to larger Canadian universities. The town is small and quiet, so students who want weekend nightlife travel to Halifax.

St. Francis Xavier University Rankings 2027

StFX is a primarily undergraduate university and does not participate in QS, THE or US News global research rankings. Its strongest signals are Maclean’s Primarily Undergraduate placement and the Collegedunia Study Abroad ranking for Canada.

Key insight: For Indian applicants, the absence of a QS or THE rank is not a visa or PGWP concern because StFX is a DLI-listed public university and its degrees are recognised by IRCC for post-graduation work permits. Maclean’s Top 5 tier signals teaching quality that global research rankings do not measure.

St. Francis Xavier University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

StFX graduates enter Nova Scotia’s healthcare, education and public-service workforce at strong rates, and international graduates access a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years.

  • Employment within 6 months: 89% for undergraduate cohorts (StFX Career Services 2024)
  • Median starting salary: CAD 52,000 per year for UG grads (INR 32.50 lakh), CAD 62,000 for master’s grads (INR 38.75 lakh)
  • Top recruiting sectors: Healthcare and nursing, K-12 education, public policy, banking, non-profit development
  • Notable Indian alumni: Coady Institute alumni network active in Indian development-sector NGOs and policy think tanks
  • Career support: StFX Career Services runs on-campus recruitment fairs, PGWP workshops and provincial nominee-programme guidance for international students

Insider note: Nova Scotia’s Atlantic Immigration Programme gives StFX international graduates a direct provincial-nominee pathway, and healthcare and education graduates receive priority processing. This route is not available at most Ontario or British Columbia universities.

St. Francis Xavier University vs Peer Universities

StFX competes directly with three Maple League peers and two larger Nova Scotia universities on cost, teaching model and PGWP outcomes.

UniversityQS Rank 2027Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026Avg Annual PG FeeDifferentiator
St. Francis Xavier UniversityNot ranked#40 CanadaCAD 10,900 (INR 6.81 lakh)Coady Institute plus lowest tuition in group

Saint Mary’s University#801-1000#28 CanadaCAD 21,600 (INR 13.50 lakh)Sobey MBA and Halifax city access

StFX stands out among Maple League peers on tuition, coming in nearly CAD 7,000 lower than the next-cheapest master’s option in the group. The Coady Institute is unique in Atlantic Canada and drives Indian applicant flow in adult education and public policy.

St. Francis Xavier University is a fit for Indian applicants who want a small-class Atlantic Canada bachelor’s or master’s with a total annual cost under INR 27.50 lakh, direct provincial-nominee routes through Nova Scotia, and a Coady Institute link for development-sector careers. The study in Canada visa pathway supports a three-year PGWP that matches the CAD 62,000 master’s median salary.

StFX is not the right pick for applicants who want a QS Top 200 research brand, a large tech-recruiting hub or an urban campus, and Saint Mary’s University in Halifax is a stronger fit for those priorities. Applicants targeting a global research rank should also compare University of Toronto or McGill instead.

St. Francis Xavier University FAQs

Ques. How long does the PGWP last for StFX master’s graduates?

Ans. StFX master’s graduates on a study permit qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years, matching the maximum PGWP duration set by IRCC. A one-year master’s still delivers the three-year PGWP under current rules. Undergraduate graduates receive a PGWP equal to their programme length, up to three years. Indian applicants must apply within 180 days of receiving final marks.

Ques. Can Indian StFX students work part-time during their studies?

Ans. Yes, Indian students on a valid StFX study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic terms, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. On-campus work has no hour cap. StFX Career Services lists 200 to 300 on-campus jobs each term across dining, library, residence and lab assistant roles. The average on-campus wage sits at CAD 15 per hour.

Ques. Does StFX waive the IELTS for Indian applicants with English-medium schooling?

Ans. StFX accepts an English-medium waiver from Indian applicants who completed Class 11 and Class 12 fully in English at a recognised school. The applicant submits a signed medium-of-instruction letter on school letterhead confirming the language of instruction. This waiver applies to most Arts, Business and Science undergraduate programmes. BSc Nursing and MSc research streams still require IELTS or TOEFL.

Ques. What is the NSISP pathway to StFX for Indian students?

Ans. The Nova Scotia International Student Programme places Indian students in a Nova Scotia high school for Grade 11 or 12 before StFX admission. NSISP graduates pay CAD 10,135 annual tuition instead of CAD 21,665 at StFX. The pathway costs CAD 32,000 per NSISP high-school year but unlocks the renewable CAD 11,530 bursary through the full bachelor’s degree. Return on investment turns positive by the end of year two at StFX.

Ques. Does StFX accept CBSE and ISC Class 12 marks directly?

Ans. Yes, StFX accepts CBSE, ISC and state board Class 12 marks directly for undergraduate admission without a WES evaluation at the UG stage. Master’s applicants must submit a WES course-by-course evaluation of the bachelor’s transcript. Provisional Class 12 marksheets are accepted for conditional offers, with the final marksheet due before enrolment. Migration certificates from the board are required after acceptance.

Ques. What is the StFX application fee for Indian applicants?

Ans. StFX charges an application fee of CAD 40 for undergraduate applicants and CAD 100 for graduate applicants (INR 2,500 and INR 6,250 respectively). The fee is non-refundable and payable by credit card during the online application. StFX runs periodic fee-waiver windows for education-fair applicants from India, and the india@stfx.ca liaison can share the active waiver code before submission.

Ques. Can StFX international students bring a spouse to Canada?

Ans. Yes, StFX master’s students on a valid study permit can bring a spouse or common-law partner to Canada on an open work permit. The spouse can work full-time in any occupation for the duration of the study permit. Undergraduate students are no longer eligible for spousal open work permits under 2024 IRCC rule changes. Financial proof requirements rise by CAD 4,500 for each accompanying dependant.

Ques. Which Indian banks fund education loans for StFX?

Ans. StFX is on the recognised institution list of major Indian public and private banks including SBI, HDFC Credila, ICICI, Axis and IDFC First Bank. Unsecured loans up to INR 40 lakh are common for the four-year bachelor’s, while master’s loans typically clear at INR 20 to 30 lakh. StFX admission letters and CAD-denominated fee invoices are accepted for GIC and tuition disbursements. Non-banking lenders such as Avanse and Auxilo also fund StFX programmes.

Overview

Stfx is close to my home. I didn't want to be too far but I'm also far enough to get a sense of independence. The X ring was also a bit part of the reason that I chose the school and I'm looking forward to joining the alumni's.

Fees

Tuition is about eight grand for the average student. Residences go anywhere from $5000 to $9000 depending on what sort of living situation you're looking for. You have to pay fees for the union and some construction, but it's nothing out of place.

My first and primary language is English. Do I need an English proficiency exam test again?

Suppose your first and primary language is English, and you have completed your education entirely in English. In that case, you most likely won't need to take an additional English proficiency exam for St. Francis Xavier University (StFX).

StFX Univesity’s Master of Applied Comuter Science program is recognized as the top ranked program in Atlantic Canada. The admission for this program is very competitive. Admission is offered based on academic excellence. Students applying for admission in this program must have a four-year bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with at least 70% marks from a recognized university. Along with that a valid ELP test score is necessary for international students.
