Upon your acceptance at SMU, you can apply for residence, through SMUport – the student login into the University system. Follow the steps listed below to apply for residence:

  • Visit the Account Activation page on SMUport.
  • Enter your “A” number (provided in your acceptance letter) and password.
  • Click “Activate” to get your SMUport ID.
  • Log on to SMUport, create your profile, select residence preferences, and pay the residence application fee ($25 CAD) via credit card only.
  • Upon acceptance of the application, pay the residence confirmation deposit and submit your Residence Agreement within the deadline to ensure your residence spot is reserved.
  • All residence fees include wireless internet, telephone service, voicemail, and cable television service.

  • All academic and language test transcripts must be submitted in sealed envelopes directly from the issuing authority.
  • Recommendation forms for post graduate students to be submitted to the University Admissions office directly from the referee in a sealed envelope.

English Language Requirements

  • International undergraduate applicants need to submit scores of English language tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, MELAB, CAEL etc. if completed secondary school in any medium other than English.
  • International postgraduate students are required to submit IELTS or TOEFL scores (minimum 6.5 and 80 respectively, higher for select courses)

Options of work while study

International students need to possess a student work permit in order to take up a co-op work/summer job etc. in Canada. Apart from a work permit, students are also required to possess a SIN ID to be employed in Canada.

  • SMU offers a co-operative education model for a host of both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Students can gain the advantage of combining classroom learning and relevant hands-on field experience while earning a pay of about $12-$15 per hour in a co-op job.
  • Volunteering would boost co-curricular records and add value to students’ resume. Opportunities exist both on-campus as well as off-campus in fields as varied as sports, museum, animal shelter, environment or events, among others.
  • Students can also avail of the opportunity to work part-time/full-time, on campus or off campus, depending upon whether the university is in session or not.

How to get a SIN?

SIN is mandatory in order to work on campus or off campus and for tax purposes. It is no way related to a person’s health insurance number. A social number is valid until the end of your stay or a maximum 5 years. You can renew the same if necessary.

One can obtain SIN by going in person to Service Canada office along with the following documents:

  1. Your Passport
  2. Your study permit
  3. Your off-campus work permit/ co-op/internship program permit.
