Saint Mary’s University Scholarships for UG Students

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Presidential Scholarship | CAD 9,000 annually across 4 years, totalling CAD 36,000 (INR 24.63 Lakhs) | Admission average 95% or higher, 750-word community essay, international applicants eligible | February 15, 2027 by 11:59 pm AST | Entrance Awards Program: Parts 1 and 3 |
| Presidential International Baccalaureate Scholarship | CAD 9,000 each year for four years, totalling CAD 36,000 (INR 24.63 Lakhs) | Predicted or final IB Diploma of 36 points or higher | 15 February 2027, 11:59 pm AST cut-off | Same Entrance Awards form, Parts 1 and 3 |
| Santamarian Scholarship | CAD 5,000 yearly across 4 years, totalling CAD 20,000 (INR 13.69 Lakhs) | Class 12 or IB average of 95% (or IB 36+), essay required | Deadline February 15, 2027 (11:59 pm AST) | Entrance Awards Parts 1 and 3 online submission |
| Renewable Entrance Scholarship | CAD 2,000 to CAD 4,000 yearly (INR 1.37 to INR 2.74 Lakhs), renewable | Admission average 85% or higher; international UG applicants eligible | Rolling assessment; admission decision needed by March 1, 2027 | Automatic on undergraduate admission, no extra form |
| Sobey National Innovator Scholarship | CAD 20,000 year one, CAD 10,000 each remaining year, total CAD 50,000 (INR 34.22 Lakhs) | Bachelor of Commerce applicant with 90% average or IB 36+; primarily Canadian citizens or PR | Close-off 15 February 2027 by 11:59 pm AST | Entrance Awards Program form plus essay |
The Presidential and Santamarian awards share the same 750-word essay. A strong Indian applicant with 95%+ Class 12 board results should target both slots in a single filing.
Renewal terms need a 3.70 grade point average across 24 credit hours in year one. From year two onwards the threshold shifts to 3.70 over 30 credits per academic year. Missing the mark pauses the award instead of cancelling it outright.
Best-fit undergraduate programmes for these awards include BSc Computing Science, Bachelor of Commerce Finance and BA Economics through the Sobey School of Business. Applicants should also confirm English test scores before the essay stage.
For UG intake dates and IELTS thresholds tied to these awards, see the Saint Mary’s University admissions page.
Saint Mary’s University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students
Master’s funding at Saint Mary’s runs through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Named awards are limited, so most students combine one internal package with a Teaching or Research Assistantship.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Durland Graduate Research Scholarship | CAD 10,000 to CAD 20,000 per year (INR 6.84 to INR 13.69 Lakhs), renewable | Incoming research-based Master’s candidate aligned with SMU Strategic Research Plan themes | Tentative January 31, 2027 at 5:00 pm AST | Departmental nomination plus research statement |
| Graduate Fellowship (FGSR) | CAD 5,000 to CAD 10,000 per year (INR 3.42 to INR 6.84 Lakhs) | Full-time thesis-track Master’s student, minimum B+ standing | Rolling with programme admission | Automatic on admission to a research-thesis stream |
| Teaching or Research Assistantship | CAD 4,000 to CAD 12,000 per term (INR 2.74 to INR 8.21 Lakhs) | Full-time Master’s, matched to supervisor grant or teaching load | Continuous; arranged with programme coordinator | Direct request through the academic department |
| Conference Travel Fund | Up to CAD 500 (INR 34,215) | Confirmed conference presenter with peer-reviewed acceptance letter | Rolling through the academic year | Application form through FGSR |
| International Travel Fund (thesis field research) | Up to CAD 2,000 (INR 1.37 Lakhs) | Master’s thesis student conducting fieldwork outside Canada | Tentative March 15 and September 15, 2027 (biannual) | FGSR travel form with supervisor letter |
MBA and MFin applicants at the Sobey School face a different funding pattern. Entry scholarships operate on a case basis, so Indian candidates should raise scholarship intent during the admission interview.
Assistantship earnings often cover 40 to 60 percent of a research-based master’s tuition bill. Combining a Durland offer with a TA slot is the standard package Indian recipients report on the Computing and Data Analytics track.
Reddit Insight: Indian MSc Computing and Data Analytics applicants report early supervisor emails ahead of the January cycle. That approach improves odds of both a Durland nomination and a linked Research Assistantship. Cold applying often means no scholarship line inside the initial offer letter.
For programme-specific tuition and living costs, see the Saint Mary’s University programs and fees.
India-Specific Scholarships at Saint Mary’s University
Saint Mary’s does not run a country-flag award reserved for Indian nationals. Indian applicants access the general international pool, which is where most funding actually lives.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renewable Entrance Scholarship (Indian applicant route) | CAD 2,000 to CAD 4,000 each year (INR 1.37 to INR 2.74 Lakhs), renewable | Indian Class 12 average of 85% or higher on CBSE, ICSE or state board | March 1, 2027 admission cut-off for September 2027 intake | Automatic on international UG admission |
| Presidential Scholarship (Indian applicant route) | Total CAD 36,000 across 4 years (INR 24.63 Lakhs) | Class 12 board average of 95% or higher, or IB 36+, with 750-word essay | 15 February 2027 close-off (11:59 pm AST) | Entrance Awards Program, Parts 1 and 3 |
| In-country Financial Need Bursary | CAD 1,000 to CAD 3,000 per year (INR 68,430 to INR 2.05 Lakhs) | Enrolled international student with documented financial hardship | Rolling through the Financial Aid and Awards Office | Bursary form after enrolment |
The 95 percent threshold is roughly a Class 12 score of 950 out of 1000 on CBSE and ICSE marksheets. That level typically pairs with strong extracurricular evidence in the essay stage.
Applicants using the 85 percent renewable route still need to lodge admission and scholarship files by mid-February. March 1 is only the admissibility cut-off, not the scholarship review date.

| Graduate Fellowship (PhD stream) | CAD 8,000 to CAD 15,000 per year (INR 5.47 to INR 10.26 Lakhs), renewable up to 4 years | Full-time PhD candidate with B+ minimum standing | Rolling with doctoral admission | Automatic on PhD admission |
| Research Assistantship (PhD) | CAD 12,000 to CAD 20,000 yearly (INR 8.21 to INR 13.69 Lakhs) | PhD candidate paired with a supervisor on an active grant | Arranged with supervisor at admission stage | Direct through the PhD supervisor |
| Teaching Assistantship (PhD) | CAD 5,000 to CAD 8,000 per term (INR 3.42 to INR 5.47 Lakhs) | PhD candidate teaching tutorials or lab sections | Continuous through the department each term | Departmental coordinator allocation |
A funded PhD package at Saint Mary’s typically bundles a Fellowship, an RA and a TA together. Indian doctoral applicants target combined offers around CAD 20,000 to CAD 30,000 per year (INR 13.69 to INR 20.53 Lakhs).
Astronomy and International Development Studies attract the largest Indian applicant volume. Direct supervisor contact before submitting the application is standard practice inside both departments.
External Government Scholarships
Federal Canadian awards and Indian government grants can top up the internal Saint Mary’s package. Doctoral candidates sit inside the largest of these pools.
| Scholarship | Value | Eligibility | Deadline | Application |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS-D) | CAD 40,000 per year for 3 years, total CAD 120,000 (INR 82.12 Lakhs) | PhD candidate at an eligible Canadian institution; international students now included (Vanier replacement, effective 2026) | Tentative national deadline November 5, 2026 (agency SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR) | Application through granting agency; SMU internal cut-off in October |
| Study in Canada Scholarships (SICS) | CAD 7,200 to CAD 10,200 for one term (INR 4.93 to INR 6.98 Lakhs) | Short-term visiting research or coursework; Indian nationals eligible | Tentative Saint Mary’s cut-off February 2027, then Global Affairs Canada | Through the Saint Mary’s international office |
| Government of India National Overseas Scholarship | Full tuition plus USD 15,400 per year (INR 13.11 Lakhs) stipend | SC, ST, DNT and Landless Agricultural Labourer categories, Master’s holder with 60% or higher | Tentative March 2027 (annual Ministry cycle) | Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment portal |
| JN Tata Endowment Loan Scholarship | INR 1 Lakh to INR 10 Lakhs partial grant, plus interest-free loan up to INR 10 Lakhs | Indian graduate with 60% or higher, headed for overseas Master’s or PhD | Tentative March 21, 2027 (annual cycle) | Online through jntataendowment.org |
| KC Mahindra Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies Abroad | Up to INR 10 Lakhs interest-free loan; 3 top grants worth INR 8 Lakhs each | Indian graduate with confirmed admission to an overseas Master’s programme | Tentative 31 March 2027 (annual cycle) | KC Mahindra Education Trust online portal |
Reddit Insight: Indian MBA applicants at Saint Mary’s often stack a JN Tata partial grant with a KC Mahindra loan. This combination covers roughly CAD 20,000 (INR 13.69 Lakhs) of MBA tuition without touching family funds.
The CGRS-D is the top prize for doctoral applicants and needs the SMU institutional review before the national round. Missing the October internal window kills eligibility for the November agency cut-off.
Indian candidates using India-side awards should build a 30-day buffer for document notarisation. Ministry portals often reject files at the sworn-affidavit stage.
Saint Mary’s University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions
Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian student can secure at Saint Mary’s University?
Ans. The peak stack sits near CAD 36,000 over four years (INR 24.63 Lakhs) via the Presidential Scholarship for a 95 percent Class 12 applicant. Combining a Renewable Entrance top-up and a Financial Need bursary can add another CAD 3,000 to CAD 4,000 each year.
Ques. When should an Indian applicant apply for Saint Mary’s scholarships for the September 2027 intake?
Ans. Submit the undergraduate application and the Entrance Awards Program application by February 15, 2027 at 11:59 pm AST. That converts to roughly 9:29 am IST on February 16, and the Renewable Entrance admissibility closes March 1, 2027.
Ques. Does Saint Mary’s University auto-assess Indian applicants for scholarships or is a separate form needed?
Ans. Renewable Entrance Scholarships auto-assess on admission with no extra paperwork. The Presidential, Santamarian and Sobey National Innovator awards need the Entrance Awards form plus a 750-word community essay.
Ques. What are the Presidential Scholarship renewal terms at Saint Mary’s University?
Ans. First-year renewal needs a 3.70 grade point average across 24 credit hours between September and April. From year two onwards, the bar shifts to 3.70 across 30 credits per academic year. Falling below pauses the next instalment instead of cancelling the award.
Ques. Does a Saint Mary’s scholarship cover rent in Halifax for an Indian student?
Ans. The CAD 9,000 Presidential covers roughly nine months of shared Halifax rent at CAD 900 to CAD 1,100 per month. Groceries, transit and phone add another CAD 700 to CAD 900 monthly, which sits outside scholarship scope.
Ques. Can Indian applicants apply for the CGRS-D at Saint Mary’s University?
Ans. Yes, the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral replaced Vanier from 2026 and now includes international candidates. It pays CAD 40,000 per year for three years (INR 82.12 Lakhs total) through the SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR route.

- With my low GMAT score this University was accepting my application and it has a decent MBA program with good ROI with regard to fee and average salary of pass out graduates.
The University has a lot to offer and many people find it quite overwhelming as campus is always buzzing with lot of activities around the year. You will not find any racist behavior from fellow students or university staff and faculty. They only value for your work and not who you are based on nationality or religion race etc. If you can keep up with the activities around you, no doubt you will learn a lot. Lot of hackathon happen with good price money in offering and I have won myself quite a few. Lot of workshops happen where you get paid to attend them.

I didn’t apply for or receive any scholarships. I think scholarships were available to transfer students but definitely not in the same volume as for regular admission.
I wanted to go as far away from home as my parents would let me so that meant SoCal schools were my targets. UCLA didn’t have TAG or an undergraduate major similar to criminology, and actually UCI had the only true criminology program.
Bachelor of Science program is known for the number of research opportunities available for undergraduate students. Those studying areas of green chemistry are able to make use of the green roof research facilities of the new Atrium and Global Learning Commons while Astrophysics students spend time in the Burke Gaffney Observatory on campus.
I like the residence and the city, and the program that I wanted they offered. It has a good reputation as a university. The city is nice and big and is great for students. My friend also decided to go to Halifax to study.
