Saint Mary’s University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants meet Saint Mary’s University admission requirements through a mix of academic transcripts, English test scores and WES credential verification.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended); Sobey MBA accepts three-year degrees with strong CGPA and work experience
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 80 (writing 20), PTE Academic 61, or Duolingo English Test 115
- Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation required for Indian bachelor’s degrees
- Sobey MBA additional: GMAT 550 recommended (waived for strong CGPA), 2 years work experience preferred
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 from CBSE, ICSE or recognised state boards with 70% (recommended); higher for Sobey Commerce
- English proficiency: IELTS 6.5 overall or TOEFL iBT 80; CBSE English at 75%+ may waive the test
Key insight: Saint Mary’s University waives the English test for Indian applicants who scored 75% or higher in Class 12 CBSE English or completed a bachelor’s in English medium — always request the waiver explicitly during application.
Saint Mary’s University Acceptance Rate 2027
Saint Mary’s University does not publish an official acceptance rate, but third-party data indicates an 82% (estimated) acceptance rate for international applicants — placing it among the more accessible research universities in Canada.
Sobey MBA and MSc Finance are the most competitive tracks, with tighter internal cut-offs on CGPA and English scores. General PG and UG programmes admit most applicants who meet the published minimums.
Reality check: A high acceptance rate does not mean scholarship funding is easy — Presidential and Sobey National scholarships remain limited, and Indian applicants should apply by December to compete for merit awards.

Sobey School of Business holds an AACSB accreditation, placing it among the top 6% of business schools worldwide — a more relevant credential for MBA and MSc Finance applicants than aggregate world rank.
Key insight: World rank matters less for Indian applicants than programme-specific accreditation; SMU’s AACSB credential for Sobey School and its DGP-listed status make it a valid choice for Canadian PGWP and PR pathways.

Saint Mary’s University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Sobey MBA outcomes are the strongest at Saint Mary’s University, with career centre support extending to co-op placements and Nova Scotia Provincial Nominee Program pathways for international students.
- Employment within 6 months: 87% for Sobey MBA graduates (as per Sobey School 2025 report)
- Median starting salary: C$ 62,000 (₹42.43 lakh) — market median for Nova Scotia master’s graduates
- Post-MBA median salary: C$ 78,000 (₹53.38 lakh) — as per Sobey MBA employment report
- Recruiters by sector: Financial services (RBC, Scotiabank, BMO offices in Halifax), technology (IBM Canada, Deloitte), consulting and Atlantic Canada shipping
- Careers support and PGWP: Dedicated international student careers advisor and a three-year post-graduation work permit for master’s completers
Insider note: Halifax’s finance and insurance sector is smaller than Toronto’s, so Indian MBA graduates commonly relocate to Ontario or the Prairie provinces for larger recruiter pools while retaining Nova Scotia PGWP eligibility.
Saint Mary’s University vs Peer Universities
SMU competes with mid-sized Canadian teaching universities in Atlantic Canada and Ontario for Indian applicants prioritising affordable tuition, PGWP eligibility and Sobey-tier business accreditation.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint Mary’s University | #1201+ | C$ 20,996 (₹14.37 lakh) | AACSB Sobey MBA at half the cost of top-30 peers |
| Dalhousie University | #308 | C$ 27,000 (₹18.48 lakh) | Research-heavy U15 member, larger campus |
| Cape Breton University | Not ranked | C$ 18,500 (₹12.66 lakh) | Cheapest Atlantic Canada option, weaker business track |
| University of Windsor | #701-710 | C$ 27,500 (₹18.82 lakh) | Ontario location closer to Detroit auto sector |
| University of Regina | #801-850 | C$ 23,000 (₹15.74 lakh) | Prairie PNP pathway with lower cost of living |
SMU stands out for combining an AACSB-accredited Sobey MBA with tuition that undercuts most Ontario peers by 20% or more. For Indian applicants targeting Atlantic Canada PGWP and PNP routes, it delivers a stronger business credential than Cape Breton at a lower cost than Dalhousie.
Conclusion
Saint Mary’s University fits Indian applicants who want an AACSB-accredited Sobey business degree, three-year PGWP eligibility and a total 2-year investment near ₹65 lakh against a starting-salary median of ₹42.43 lakh. The post-graduation work permit route and Nova Scotia PNP pathway make the ROI credible within 3-4 years of graduation.
It is not the right pick for applicants who need a top-200 world rank on their CV for consulting or investment banking recruiting — Dalhousie University or Western University serve that profile better while keeping Canadian PGWP access intact.
Saint Mary’s University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at Saint Mary’s University?
Ans. Yes, Indian students on a valid Canadian study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks. On-campus work through the SMU Career Services portal has no hour cap. Most Indian students find retail, food service or teaching assistant roles within 4-6 weeks of arrival in Halifax, earning C$ 15 to C$ 20 per hour.
Ques. Does Saint Mary’s University offer GMAT waivers for the Sobey MBA?
Ans. Yes, SMU waives the GMAT for Sobey MBA applicants with a CGPA above 7.5/10 from a recognised Indian university plus 3+ years of managerial experience. Chartered Accountants, CFA charterholders and applicants with prior graduate degrees also qualify for waivers. The waiver request must be submitted with the initial application, not after admission — request it in the online form’s declaration section.
Ques. What is the SMU application fee and can Indian applicants get it waived?
Ans. The Saint Mary’s University application fee is C$ 40 for undergraduate and C$ 70 for graduate applications, paid online during submission. SMU does not routinely waive the application fee for Indian applicants, but partner counsellors and select recruitment events at India offer promotional codes reducing the fee. The fee is non-refundable regardless of admission outcome.
Ques. Are education loans from Indian banks recognised by Saint Mary’s University?
Ans. Yes, SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis, ICICI, Bank of Baroda and Prodigy Finance all issue loans for Saint Mary’s University Halifax, and the university’s Designated Learning Institution number is listed for GIC verification. Indian applicants need the SMU offer letter, IRCC GIC receipt of C$ 20,635, and tuition proof for the first year to unlock disbursement. Sanction typically takes 4-6 weeks in India.
Ques. What English test scores does SMU accept for Indian applicants?
Ans. Saint Mary’s University accepts IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 80 with 20 in writing, PTE Academic 61, Duolingo English Test 115 and CAEL 60. Sobey MBA requires IELTS 7.0. CBSE or ICSE candidates scoring 75% or higher in Class 12 English can request a waiver during application. Test scores must be sent electronically from the testing agency to the SMU admissions office.
Ques. How does Saint Mary’s University verify Indian academic transcripts?
Ans. SMU requires Indian applicants to submit official transcripts directly from the university registrar, plus a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for graduate applications. WES takes 20 business days once documents are received in Toronto, so start the process 8 weeks before your target deadline. Undergraduate applicants can submit sealed transcripts without WES, though WES speeds up conditional-to-unconditional offer conversion.
Ques. Can Indian students bring their spouse or family to SMU on a dependent visa?
Ans. Yes, spouses of full-time Saint Mary’s University graduate students can apply for an open work permit valid for the full study duration, and children can attend Halifax public schools free. Financial proof of an additional C$ 4,000 per year for the first family member and C$ 3,000 for each subsequent dependent is required at visa stage. The spousal open work permit route is one of the strongest reasons married Indian applicants pick SMU over UK options.
Ques. What is the refund policy at Saint Mary’s University if a study permit is refused?
Ans. Saint Mary’s University refunds full tuition minus a C$ 500 administrative fee when an Indian applicant’s study permit is refused, provided the refusal letter from IRCC is submitted within 60 days of the term start. The deposit paid at offer acceptance is refunded in the same window. Refunds are processed to the original payment source within 6-8 weeks and issued in Canadian dollars, so FX movement between deposit and refund is borne by the applicant.

Overview
I had to submit a CV and all my a level result; i also gave them recommendation letters. Because of its good ranking and because it's ranked in the top universities University life should be experienced by all young people, which gives a vast change in our own attitudes and lives. It ensures our goals and success
Campus Life
The campus was good. I got many friends. The infrastructure was also good. I didn't participate in the extracurricular activities.

- With my low GMAT score this University was accepting my application and it has a decent MBA program with good ROI with regard to fee and average salary of pass out graduates.
Overview
The University has a lot to offer and many people find it quite overwhelming as campus is always buzzing with lot of activities around the year. You will not find any racist behavior from fellow students or university staff and faculty. They only value for your work and not who you are based on nationality or religion race etc. If you can keep up with the activities around you, no doubt you will learn a lot. Lot of hackathon happen with good price money in offering and I have won myself quite a few. Lot of workshops happen where you get paid to attend them.
Campus Life
All the assignment and curriculum is updated online on Brightspace website which is used by many universities. Every month lot of activities are planned and visit by industry experts. Campus is well connected with WIFI, a very big ground for football and university has its own varsity league. Lot of open spaces for students to sit and study. The University has Tim Hortons and Starbucks right inside the campus along with University Mess. They also provide food bank facilities for students who find it hard to earn during studies. The University just inaugurated it's innovation hub with state of the art facilities for students.
Overview
I wanted to go as far away from home as my parents would let me so that meant SoCal schools were my targets. UCLA didn’t have TAG or an undergraduate major similar to criminology, and actually UCI had the only true criminology program.
Campus Life
I never went to the campus physically because of COVID but I’d always hear great thinks about Aldrich Park and Ring Road. The esports team was really garnering support given the lack of physical presence, and many clubs successfully managed to shift meetings and events into an online format.
Overview
Bachelor of Science program is known for the number of research opportunities available for undergraduate students. Those studying areas of green chemistry are able to make use of the green roof research facilities of the new Atrium and Global Learning Commons while Astrophysics students spend time in the Burke Gaffney Observatory on campus.
Fees
The average tuition fees for international students in 2018/19 are CA$27,159 per year. Arts and humanities courses tend to be cheaper, while subjects such as engineering and medicine are among the more expensive (an average of CA$30,742 per year). Fees for business and management courses are lower than the national average, at CA$26,395 per year.
Overview
I like the residence and the city, and the program that I wanted they offered. It has a good reputation as a university. The city is nice and big and is great for students. My friend also decided to go to Halifax to study.
Fees
Tuition is about 7000 CAD a year, the residence is close to 10000 CAD depending on which you choose, then you also have to get a meal plan or live on the residence where you have a kitchen. Books are not too overpriced, and you can often get them second hand for much less.
