English Language Proficiency Block
International applicants from India must demonstrate English language ability through one of four accepted tests. Duolingo is the fastest and most accessible option for Indian students; results arrive within two business days of testing. IELTS remains the most widely offered test across India, with exam centres in every major city.
- Duolingo 110 is Calgary’s baseline and carries no per-component minimums; score is valid for life. Test online from home; no test centre travel needed.
- IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 minimum in each band (reading, writing, listening, speaking) is the recognized gold standard. Widely available across India on a monthly basis; preparation typically requires 8–12 weeks of structured study for competitive scores.
- TOEFL iBT 83 is accepted; less common among Indian students due to higher exam fees and limited test dates. Equivalent to IELTS 6.5 in institutional difficulty.
- For Indian 12+2 graduates planning law or management consulting post-graduation, a 6.5 IELTS target is recommended to ensure competitive placement interviews later.
Tip for Indian Students: Budget four to six weeks for WES credential evaluation of your 12+2 mark sheet. Submit the WES report alongside your application to avoid processing delays. Weak English test scores (below 6.0 per band) may delay your admission decision by four to eight weeks pending review by the Department of Philosophy.
