University of Calgary Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants meet UCalgary requirements through Class 12 or a recognised bachelor’s degree, an English proficiency score, and a credential evaluation for competitive programmes.
Postgraduate Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 in the final two years (recommended); Haskayne MBA requires CGPA 6.0/10 or 3.0/4.0 in last two years with 2+ years full-time work experience
- English (general): IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 86, PTE 59, Duolingo 120, CAEL 70
- English (Haskayne MBA): IELTS 7.0 (min 6.0 per section), TOEFL iBT 97 (min 20 per section)
- Credential evaluation: IQAS or WES for international transcripts
- MBA specific: GMAT 550 recommended, GMAT Focus 515 minimum, mandatory video interview
Undergraduate Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ISC, or State Board) with 75 to 90% depending on programme (recommended); Engineering and Petroleum Engineering require 85 to 90% including Maths, Physics, Chemistry
- English: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT 86, PTE 59, Duolingo 120
- Programme-specific: Bachelor of Nursing requires Biology and Chemistry; Haskayne BComm reviews written supplement
Key insight: UCalgary does not automatically waive English tests for Indian applicants whose Class 12 was English-medium, since India is not on Alberta’s 43-country ELP-exempt list. Plan to take IELTS or TOEFL by December 2026 at the latest for a Fall 2027 start.
University of Calgary Acceptance Rate 2027
UCalgary does not publish an official institution-wide acceptance rate. Third-party analyses place the overall rate at 20 to 30% (estimated), with competitive faculties such as Engineering, Haskayne Business and Nursing running lower than that band.
The rate varies materially by programme: Engineering admission averages sit around 88% for Class 12 marks, and the Haskayne MBA converts roughly one in four qualified applicants. Indian applicants with 85%+ in Class 12 or a strong bachelor’s degree with the required English score have a reasonable path in.
Reality check: Marks alone do not guarantee an offer for Engineering or Haskayne. Statement of Purpose quality, prerequisite subject grades, and English test scores in the higher band (IELTS 7.0+) move the needle for competitive programmes.

University of Calgary Campus, Facilities and Student Life
UCalgary’s main campus sits in northwest Calgary, 15 minutes by CTrain (Calgary’s light-rail transit) from downtown, with a satellite Foothills Medical campus and a Doha campus in Qatar.
- Location and transit: Main campus is connected via the CTrain University station; monthly transit pass is CAD 112 (INR 7,774)
- Housing: On-campus residences house first-year and international students; international first-years get guaranteed accommodation if they apply by the deadline
- Facilities: Taylor Family Digital Library, Active Living centre (16,000+ sq metres), Schulich Engineering Design and Innovation Centre
- Indian community: UCalgary India Students’ Association (UCISA) hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; MSc CS and MEng cohorts have strong Indian presence
What Indian students say: Calgary’s winters are cold but drier than Toronto or Montreal, making commuting more manageable. On-campus housing fills up fast, so early residence applications matter more than students expect. Part-time work at the university library, gym, or in local retail is accessible in the first semester itself.

UCalgary has 36 subjects ranked in the 2025 ARWU Global Ranking of Academic Subjects; its top subject positions include Veterinary Sciences at #45, Water Resources in the #51-75 band, and Clinical Medicine in the #51-75 band. UCalgary is Canada’s #9 university in the THE 2026 domestic table.
Key insight: The QS 2027 drop of 38 places to #249 reflects methodology reweighting rather than material changes at the university. All rankings keep UCalgary in the global top 250, which is well inside the Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit and Indian employer recognition threshold.

University of Calgary Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
UCalgary maintains strong graduate employment outcomes, particularly in energy, engineering, technology and healthcare, reinforced by Calgary’s status as Canada’s energy corporate headquarters.
- Median starting salary (bachelor’s graduate): CAD 60,000 to 75,000 (INR 41.65 to 52.06 lakh) per year across engineering and business (market median, estimated)
- Median post-MBA salary (Haskayne): CAD 90,000 to 110,000 (INR 62.47 to 76.35 lakh) per year (market median, estimated)
- Recruiting sectors: Energy (upstream and clean), banking, technology, healthcare, professional services; Calgary hosts headquarters of TC Energy, Enbridge, Suncor and Shell Canada
- Career services: Career Services centre runs on-campus recruiting, mentorship, and CV clinics for international students
- Post-study work: Eligible graduates access the Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to three years
Insider note: Indian STEM graduates from UCalgary land more predictably at Calgary-headquartered energy and tech employers than at Toronto or Vancouver-based firms. The MDSA and MSc CS cohorts see the strongest early-career salary uplifts.
University of Calgary vs Peer Universities
UCalgary is best compared against U15 research universities in Canada with similar postgraduate scale and cost profiles.

UCalgary trades a mid-tier QS position for direct access to Canada’s energy corporate cluster and lower Calgary living costs. It typically beats larger Ontario peers on total spend for Indian STEM students who prioritise employability over rank.
Indian applicants choosing UCalgary over the University of Alberta usually do so for Haskayne MBA cohort composition, MDSA programme depth, or Calgary’s proximity to industry recruiters.
UCalgary offers Indian applicants a defensible mid-CAD 30 lakh to 65 lakh total investment against a CAD 60,000 to 90,000 (INR 41.65 to 62.47 lakh) median starting salary. Its strongest Indian-specific advantage is the three-year Canada Post-Graduation Work Permit pathway paired with Alberta’s post-graduation nomination stream, which shortens the PR timeline for STEM graduates.
UCalgary is not the right pick for applicants targeting the QS top 100 or the Toronto-Waterloo tech corridor for internships. Those students should look at the University of Toronto or the University of Waterloo instead.
University of Calgary FAQs
Ques. What English-taught postgraduate programmes does University of Calgary offer?
Ans. All UCalgary programmes are taught in English, including course-based master’s such as MSc Computer Science and MSc Data Science and Analytics, professional master’s like the Haskayne Full-time MBA and MEng Software Engineering, and research master’s across engineering, science, medicine and social sciences. There are no French-medium programmes at UCalgary, which simplifies the pathway for Indian students who complete undergraduate education in English-medium boards.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at UCalgary?
Ans. Yes. Full-time international students with a valid Canadian study permit can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during academic terms and full-time during scheduled breaks, under Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada rules effective from late 2024. On-campus work carries no hour cap. Popular first-semester jobs include library shifts, campus retail and gym reception, all of which pay Alberta minimum wage of CAD 15 per hour or higher.
Ques. Does UCalgary waive the GMAT for the Haskayne MBA?
Ans. UCalgary offers a GMAT waiver only to applicants holding a Canadian or US undergraduate business degree with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Indian applicants with a bachelor’s from an Indian university are not eligible for the waiver and must submit a GMAT score of 550 or higher (recommended) or a GMAT Focus score of 515 minimum. The waiver is not extended based on work experience alone.
Ques. What is the application fee for international students at UCalgary?
Ans. The international application fee at UCalgary is CAD 145 (INR 10,065) per programme, paid non-refundably at the time of submission through the CAS portal. Applicants with prior Canadian education pay a lower CAD 125 (INR 8,676) fee. UCalgary does not currently offer a general application fee waiver for Indian applicants, so the fee should be budgeted per programme applied to.
Ques. Are IELTS scores from India accepted for UCalgary admission?
Ans. Yes. IELTS Academic scores from any authorised Indian test centre are accepted, with a minimum overall band of 6.5 for most undergraduate and course-based master’s programmes. Haskayne Full-time MBA requires 7.0 overall with 6.0 minimum in each section. IELTS Indicator and IELTS Online are also accepted. Scores must be sent electronically to UCalgary and are valid for two years from the test date.
Ques. Does UCalgary guarantee on-campus housing for international students?
Ans. UCalgary guarantees on-campus residence for first-year international undergraduate students who apply for residence by the published deadline, typically 1 June for a September start. Guaranteed options include Rundle Hall, Kananaskis Hall and International House. Graduate students and returning undergraduates apply through a competitive process and are not covered by the guarantee. Off-campus shared apartments in Brentwood and University Heights are the common alternative.
Ques. Which Indian education loan lenders finance UCalgary study costs?
Ans. UCalgary features on the approved international university lists of major Indian education lenders including SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, ICICI Bank, Auxilo, InCred and Prodigy Finance. Loan amounts typically cover tuition plus living expenses up to CAD 150,000 (INR 104.12 lakh) unsecured for STEM programmes at the Haskayne MBA and MDSA level, with collateral required for higher amounts. Interest rates vary by lender and co-applicant profile.
Ques. How does the UCalgary credential verification process work for Indian transcripts?
Ans. UCalgary uses IQAS (International Qualifications Assessment Service) as the primary credential evaluator for Alberta, with WES accepted as an alternative for graduate admission. Indian applicants submit sealed transcripts from every board or university attended directly to IQAS, which issues an equivalency report in 6 to 8 weeks. Applicants should initiate IQAS assessment by early January 2027 for a March 2027 application deadline to avoid document delays.

- One on one professional support, passionate well-read faculty
Dislikes
- Commuter campus makes socialising hard, minimal elective options for law
Campus Life
- All basic facilities are available, and student discounts are available at partner locations all across the city.
Fees
- For 2 years, I paid around CAD 100,000
Likes
- Infrastructure was really good, sports related facilities were amazing. As long as you are a student, one can easily access swimming pool, badminton courts, squash, gymnasiums without any extra fee.
- Accommodation was easily available around the university
- University was easily accessible through city buses and transit
Dislikes
- The rent was pretty expensive and university authorities couldn't do anything about it
- There were very less career fairs and students didn't get any chance to interact with industry professionals
- There didn't seem to be any extra effort from university's side whether the students were able to secure a job after graduating. More than half of my batch didn't have a field job even after 1 year of graduation
Campus Life
-
The University has multiple campuses in Calgary
- 1. Main campus
- 2. Foothills campus
- 3. Spy Hill campus
- 4. Downtown campus.
- I only used to visit the main campus and didn't visit others. Main campus had around 4-5 libraries with one main central library. There were a lot of sports facilities, including gymnasiums, swimming pools, badminton and squash courts.
- During my time, it was the COVID pandemic, so we didn't have much festivals and all, but yes, there used to be career fairs, concerts, and stand-up comedy shows regularly before that.
- There was a Graduate Student Association (GSA), which had people who could support you for things like accommodation, transit, medical, tax filing, etc.
Fees
- I didn't take hostel so it was separate. For my fee, it was around $2500 for 3 units per course. We had to take at least 10 courses or a maximum of 12 courses. So if we multiply, the fee can range from 25,000 to 30,000 CAD for the whole course.
- The fee was increased a lot after our batch graduated.
- The fee was credit (unit)-based but was charged every semester.
- Monthly expenses
- Rent (including utilities): around 800-1000 CAD
- Groceries: 200 CAD
- Transportation: 150 CAD
- Phone bills: 50-70 CAD
- Misc.: 100 CAD
- Total expenses: 1300-1500 CAD, apart from the education fee.
- These numbers will change depending upon inflation in the last 2–3 years.

- It’s an interesting place to be. Faculty members for the most part are fairly supportive and the team of students running clubs and organizations are successful at getting people engaged.
Dislikes
- The commuter campus aspect of the campus. There is often little engagement between faculties because of this and a difficult transit experience for those living on the other side of the city.
Overview
I chose this university as the program I’m in is brand new, providing a fresh look at the built environment as a whole, unlike other universities. University is a unique experience. It’s much different than schooling before. You don’t know everyone in your school let alone even your program, making it much for self sufficient than previous schooling. It’s a challenging experience but feels much more rewarding than high school, with assignments posing actual difficulty and high level thinking requirements.
Campus Life
The campus is fairly lively, with events held by clubs and organizations on a fairly frequent basis. The university has a reputation for being a commuter campus which means that some days it can be quite quiet around the grounds. Besides that, everything else is top-notch with high-speed wifi, clean facilities, and a selection of food and beverage vendors.
Likes
- I like that my university is very student friendly and has a lot of resources available for international and domestic students such as writing support, literature review, financial support, food bank etc.
- Also, they have a very affordable tuition compared to other universities.
- They offer great international support services such as visa services.
Dislikes
- They do not have the best placement opportunities for students.
- They do not have a big infrastructure like many other bigger institutions in Canada.
- They do not pick a lot of international students for my program.
Overview
I chose this university because of following factors: - Affordable tuition fee plus a funding package of 10,000CAD per year (so I literally paid a few thousand dollars from pocket as tuition). - I also got several scholarships, research assistants and GANT opportunities that helped me fund my stay. - Calgary is an affordable city compared to other big cities in Canada. - My program has a social justice focus and it is known for its community focus - My supervisor and my research interest fit well. Overall, it's a positive experience for me with great tutelage, resources, student support services, international community etc.
Campus Life
There are a lot of campus events and activities. There is a huge library, fully equipped WIFI that works well in different parts of the campus, there is a gym, sports arena, multiple food courts, indoor walking facility during winters, bookstore, etc. There is also a SPA, a bar, a therapy center, religious center, neurodivergent space, women's center, and doctor's clinic.

- Honestly, this was the top most university in Canada which accepted me. Funding policy for research students is much higher as compared to expenses. I choose the thesis based program because i like the research and i want to go in it. Moreover, most of the thesis/research based programs are fully funded, so i had not to worry about my finances
- I like maximum things here, but the best thing is the accessibility of the facilities, I can come to my grad office at any time to work whether its midnight or weekend.
Dislikes
- I think, these year university is accepting much more students, which basically effect the teacher to student ratio. There is not any on-campus recruitment drive, so think two times if your program need huge investments
Overview
I have good experience from the perspective of courses, research, infrastructure and funding. University have flexibility about the courses; there is a good research environment and infrastructure.
Campus Life
There are lots of clubs and societies that organize different events; you will see the clubs organizing social events and societies organizing industrial visits and networking events. Few libraries have enough quiet space for studying. On the whole campus, your phone is always connected to the university's high-speed wifi, from which you can easily access research papers, books and other important articles. As for the sports, I don't know any common sport that you can not play here, but these all are indoors, since here most of the time over the year outside accumulated with snow.
Overview

- I choose this university, as I wanted to do my masters, I completed my bachelor's in University too , and my main goal is to do masters and it's only to be done from a University.
- I like the campus of my university, which is big and so accessible, there is a bus route inside and in front of every unit we get a stop for different locations in the city. It has world class facility as well as every building has a place to have a sit and complete our professional acadamic work or anything as there are big sofa as well as tables to sit , the structure of the building is as good as any corporate offices in the Downtown, calgary.
Dislikes
- The University is too big and maps doesn't work here, so proper guidance should be there for the students to show the building name as well as map of the building or as we can see in the mall , we can have a big display in the entrance of the building to show the map
Overview
The overall experience here is very good not excellent, as the fees for international student are very high , but for the students who are Canadian they have to pay less fees.
Campus Life
The campus life is so good here , as there are events that were organized again and again and they mail us regularly to get updated.

- Good scholarship, only university in the Canadian top 10 with tuition fees below $25k/yr for engineering, 95% graduate employment rate and 94% retention rate.
Overview
Overall experience is very good. The university has all bases covered residence, academics, sports, recreation, and research( also no 1 university in research) and Calgary is the 4th best city to live in, in the world according to the global liveability index.
Campus Life
Very good plenty to do in every way possible. Sports, recreation, movies anything you can think of. The university has its own football stadium and and Olympic ice skating ring also hosted the Olympics back in 90’s.
Likes
- The specialization is what attracted me to this University.
- The opportunities given to improve our skills. The student support here is great so far. Professors here have open-door policies, making it easier for us to seek guidance and clarification outside of class.
Dislikes
- The university has a strong co-operative education and internship program that allows students to gain practical work experience in their chosen fields but these are helpful mainly for those in research field. Despite all these as a student doing masters with course work, I don't have that much opportunities to gain some practical knowledge since these are limited for us.
Overview
I have had a great time since coming here. Don't expect that there will always be somebody to help you out because once you cross the border you are all on your own. Appreciate the little help you are getting. Please, sorry, thank you should not leave your lips.
Campus Life
There are many clubs and their events, many places to focus and read, etc. The libraries are having plethora of books to choose from including topics of spiritual and mental wellness. WiFi facility is available throughout the campus which is a great thing for the students.
