Indian applicants should check these three key points before applying for the University of Calgary’s International Entrance Scholarship:

  • Automatic consideration: No separate scholarship application is required. Students are considered once their high school transcripts confirm an average of 85%.
  • Tuition credit: The scholarship is credited directly to the first-year tuition invoice before classes begin.
  • Non-renewable award: The scholarship is not renewable, so students must apply for in-course awards from Year 2 onward.

The UCalgary International Scholarship also considers merit factors such as student leadership, Olympiad achievements and community involvement. Indian applicants should note that the Schulich Leader Scholarship is restricted to Canadian students.

From Year 2, students can also apply for faculty-specific awards worth CAD 1,000 - 2,500 (INR 69,410 - 1.74 lakh) to help cover their study costs.

The Vanier CGS is the largest single award among these funding options. UCalgary typically forwards only 4–6 nominations annually across all faculties, making selection highly competitive. Applicants should strengthen their profiles with research publications, international conference participation and a clear research statement.

Reddit Insight: Applicants on r/gradadmissions report that the University of Calgary’s internal deadline for Vanier nominations falls around three weeks before the federal deadline. This earlier deadline can make it harder for first-year PhD students to apply in the first funding cycle.

Eligible PhD students at the University of Calgary may combine the Alberta Graduate Scholarship with UCalgary’s CAD 33,205 funding guarantee, potentially bringing total annual funding above CAD 48,000 (INR 33.32 lakh) in eligible years.

FAQs

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian PhD applicant can secure at University of Calgary?

Ans. Indian PhD applicants stack Vanier (CAD 50,000), UCalgary’s base guarantee (CAD 33,205), and Eyes High Recruitment (CAD 15,000) per year. This takes total income near CAD 98,205 (INR 68.17 Lakhs) in Year 1. Vanier recipients cannot hold Alberta Innovates concurrently.

Ques. When does University of Calgary release scholarship decisions for Fall 2027 admits?

Ans. Entrance scholarship decisions for UG arrive with the admission offer letter, typically between January and April 2027. Haskayne MBA scholarship decisions follow a rolling model, with first-round awards announced in December 2026. PhD guarantee letters accompany the admission offer within 2 to 3 weeks of departmental approval.

Ques. Do I need to submit a separate scholarship application at University of Calgary?

Ans. Most entrance awards, including the International Entrance Scholarship and PhD base guarantee, require no separate form. The UCalgary International Scholarship and Eyes High need an essay and departmental nomination. External scholarships like Vanier and Banting need the UCalgary internal nomination round. PhD recruitment scholarships expect first class honours plus at least one published paper or conference proceeding.

  • I stayed in campus accommodation - a building allocated by student status, i.e., I was in the PG students' residence. Rent was CAD 1200, all amenities and services included. Very safe and convenient.

Scholarship

  • No, I didn't receive a scholarship during the course. The university didn't convey any details related to scholarship. I did some research but was not eligible for most of them.
  • Some of my batchmates did apply for financial aid. Some were paid around 1000-5000 CAD for the course. Its not a very large amount and only a few students received it. Many of my close friends had applied for it but didn't receive anything.

  • I was staying in an off-campus accommodation. I was staying in a 2-bedroom apartment in downtown. It was a shared accommodation where I was staying with 3 other guys.
  • I found them through Facebook and WhatsApp groups prior to landing in Canada. The monthly rent was around $1500 but increased to around $1800 next year.
  • The rent included water and electricity. The main challenge in shared accommodation is that its tough to trust someone you haven't met before.
  • My recommendation is to either stay in downtown or stay close to the university. My accommodation was a 15-20-minute transit ride away from the university. Most of the Indian students stayed near the university or in downtown.

Scholarship

I received the Rutherford Scholarship for achieving over an 80% average in all three years of high school.

I chose this university as the program I’m in is brand new, providing a fresh look at the built environment as a whole, unlike other universities. University is a unique experience. It’s much different than schooling before. You don’t know everyone in your school let alone even your program, making it much for self sufficient than previous schooling. It’s a challenging experience but feels much more rewarding than high school, with assignments posing actual difficulty and high level thinking requirements.

Scholarship

International graduate tuition award - 3060 CAD/year (automatic) Graduate Assistantship Non-Teaching - 2216 CAD/ year (automatic) Travel award for conference - 500 CAD (applied for a conference I attended) Interdepartmental scholarship - 1000 CAD (no application, automatic) Graduate Award Competition - 7000 CAD (application with research proposal, CV, reference letters)

I chose this university because of following factors: - Affordable tuition fee plus a funding package of 10,000CAD per year (so I literally paid a few thousand dollars from pocket as tuition). - I also got several scholarships, research assistants and GANT opportunities that helped me fund my stay. - Calgary is an affordable city compared to other big cities in Canada. - My program has a social justice focus and it is known for its community focus - My supervisor and my research interest fit well. Overall, it's a positive experience for me with great tutelage, resources, student support services, international community etc.

I got the Mitacs Globalink graduate fellowship, which is 15000$ for a year only. I am repeating that I am a research student, so this fellowship is in addition to the university's minimum funding, which is 25000$/year.

I have good experience from the perspective of courses, research, infrastructure and funding. University have flexibility about the courses; there is a good research environment and infrastructure.
