- Thompson Rivers University is an access-oriented public university, with an estimated acceptance rate near 82 percent for qualified applicants.
Popular Indian-applicant picks at Thompson Rivers University include the Bachelor of Computing Science, the MBA and the Master of Science in Data Science. Students choose TRU for its co-op options and Kamloops’s lower cost of living than Vancouver.

Thompson Rivers University Eligibility for Indian Students
Eligibility at Thompson Rivers University combines academic thresholds with English proficiency floors, and both are read separately from the paperwork you upload later. Program-specific pages may add prerequisite subjects on top of the institution-wide minimums shown here, so treat these as the floor to clear before checking course-level requirements.
- UG general entry: Class XII (CBSE, ICSE or state board) with 65 percent overall in academic subjects, and any subject prerequisites for the chosen program.
- UG STEM entry: Class XII at 65 percent with Mathematics for Computing Science and Business, plus Physics and Chemistry for Engineering pathways.
- PG general entry: Four-year Bachelor’s with a 3.0 GPA on the 4.33 scale in the last 60 credits, which converts to roughly 60 percent for most Indian percentage systems.
- PG research entry: Four-year Bachelor’s at 3.3 GPA (about 66 percent) for research-heavy programs such as MA Human Rights and Social Justice and MSc Environmental Science, with a supervisor confirmation for the latter.
- MBA entry: Acceptable three or four-year Bachelor’s in any discipline with a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits, no work experience minimum.
Accepted English tests for direct entry are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT), Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic), Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) and Duolingo English Test. Minimum scores differ by level, as set out below.
| Test | UG Direct Entry | PG Direct Entry (most programs) |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic) | 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 | 7.0 overall, no band below 6.5 |
| TOEFL iBT | 88, no section below 20 | 94, no section below 20 |
| PTE Academic | 58, no band below 55 | 68, no band below 62 |
| Duolingo English Test | 125, no sub-score below 115 | Not accepted for master’s |
| CAEL | 70 overall, no subtest below 60 | 70 overall, no subtest below 60 |
Indian applicants are not covered by TRU’s country-based exemption list, which limits English-test waivers to nationals of countries where English is a first official language. A Medium of Instruction (MOI) letter alone is not sufficient at TRU for Indian applicants, though completion of a full undergraduate degree at an English-language university in a listed country does qualify.
Applicants below the direct-entry English floor can still receive a conditional offer through the TRU English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pathway, which is a bridging program that layers two EAP courses with two academic courses at Level 5 before students move into full degree study.
Thompson Rivers University PG Programs and English Score Minimums
Postgraduate programs at Thompson Rivers University span business, computing, education, nursing, environmental science and human rights. Base tuition for most 2026 to 2027 master’s programs sits between CAD 37,673 (about INR 26.20 Lakhs) and CAD 57,235 (about INR 39.81 Lakhs) for the full program, and a full course-wise fees breakdown lives on the fees page linked from the full program catalogue. The English floors below come from the official Graduate Admission Requirements page.

| MSc Environmental Science | 24 months | 4-year Bachelor’s in related field, 3.3 GPA, supervisor confirmation required | IELTS 7.0 (no band below 6.5) |
| Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) | 12 months | 3 or 4 year Bachelor’s in any discipline, 3.0 GPA | IELTS 7.0 (no band below 6.5) |
Insider note: The MScDS project route reads as the more Indian-applicant friendly of the two Data Science options because it does not require a supervisor match before submitting, while the thesis route pushes decisions until faculty availability is confirmed.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Thompson Rivers University graduate admission page for your chosen program before applying.
Thompson Rivers University Undergraduate Programs for Indian Applicants
Undergraduate programs at Thompson Rivers University run four years for direct-entry Bachelor’s degrees, with the flexibility of a joint five-year BCS-and-BBA option for students who want both a computing and a business credential. Base tuition sits at CAD 875 per credit (around INR 60,856), which works out to about CAD 26,250 per year (INR 18.26 Lakhs) at a normal 30-credit load. A full-degree total of 120 credits comes to CAD 104,952 (INR 73.00 Lakhs) before scholarships. See the detailed fee breakdown on the fees page for course-by-course tuition.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) | 4 years | Class XII with 65 percent overall in academic subjects | IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) |

| Bachelor of Engineering, Computer Engineering | 4 years | Class XII 65 percent with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) |
| Bachelor of Engineering, Software Engineering | 4 years | Class XII 65 percent with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics | IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) |

| Bachelor of Arts | 4 years | Class XII 65 percent overall in academic subjects | IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) |
| Bachelor of Science in Nursing | 4 years | Class XII 65 percent with Biology, Chemistry, plus separate January deadline | IELTS 7.0 (Sp 7.0, Wr 7.0, Ls 7.5, Rd 6.5) |
Note that Nursing at the Bachelor’s level uses the same IELTS floor as the Master of Nursing because of regulatory patient-safety norms in British Columbia, not because of the academic content difference.
Thompson Rivers University MBA Rounds and Requirements
The Thompson Rivers University MBA is a 20-month, cohort-based program with two intakes per year (Fall and Winter) that is open to both career switchers and recent graduates, which is unusual for a Canadian MBA. It runs in a single full-time format at the Kamloops campus, without an executive or online variant for international students.
Thompson Rivers University MBA GMAT and Work Experience Policy
TRU does not require GMAT or GRE for MBA admission, though the admissions committee reserves the right to request a score if an application shows academic gaps. There is no minimum work experience requirement, which places the TRU MBA among the small set of Canadian MBAs that accept recent Bachelor’s graduates directly.
Thompson Rivers University MBA English and Interview Stage
The English floor is IELTS 7.0 (no band below 6.5) or TOEFL iBT 94 (no section below 20), applied strictly since the program is coursework and case-heavy. Interviews are not a standard step for every applicant, and the admissions team calls candidates for a video interview only where the file needs additional context on academics or motivation.
Insider note: Base MBA tuition for 2026 to 2027 is CAD 57,235 (around INR 39.81 Lakhs) for the full 20 months, and funding options for Indian students including the Exceptional Student Award and Graduate Teaching Assistantships are on the scholarships page.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Thompson Rivers University MBA page for your chosen program before applying.
Thompson Rivers University Application Process for International Students
Thompson Rivers University routes every international application through EducationPlannerBC iApply, the shared British Columbia application platform used by public post-secondary institutions in the province. The steps below hold for both undergraduate and graduate applicants, with program-specific supplements slotting in after the core application.
- Create an EducationPlannerBC account and select Thompson Rivers University plus your intake and program, then pay the application fee of CAD 100 (around INR 6,955) at submission on the EducationPlannerBC iApply portal.
- Upload identity documents (passport bio page), Class XII marksheets, and (for PG) all Bachelor’s transcripts with a certified English translation where the originals are in Hindi or a regional language.
- Attach English proficiency scores (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, CAEL or Duolingo for UG), sending the official score report to TRU’s assigned test-taker code.
- Complete the program-specific supplement for graduate programs, which typically includes a Statement of Purpose, two Letters of Recommendation (LORs), a resume or CV, and a supervisor confirmation for research masters.
- Submit the file and monitor your EducationPlannerBC dashboard for missing-document flags, then respond within 14 days of any TRU International Admissions email requesting further evidence.
Documents can be uploaded as scanned copies at submission, with certified originals or attested copies to follow once a Letter of Acceptance is issued and study permit application begins.
Thompson Rivers University Admission Decisions and Offer Timelines
Thompson Rivers University issues decisions on a rolling basis rather than a single announcement date, which means most applicants receive an outcome within four to eight weeks of a complete file arriving at International Admissions.
- Offer letter timing: 4 to 8 weeks from complete-file receipt for standard programs, longer for research masters that need supervisor sign-off.
- Conditional offers: Common where final Class XII marksheets or the English test score are still pending, cleared once the missing document is uploaded.
- Acceptance deadline: Students typically have 30 to 60 days from offer date to accept and pay the tuition deposit, with the exact date printed on the Letter of Acceptance.
- Deferral policy: One-intake deferrals are usually granted on request without a new application, provided the deferral request reaches International Admissions before the acceptance deadline.
Students paying the tuition deposit receive the study-permit-ready Letter of Acceptance (LOA) within 5 business days, which is the version needed for the IRCC study permit application.
Thompson Rivers University Documents Required for Indian Applicants
Below is the paperwork checklist for the Thompson Rivers University international application. Academic thresholds and English scores are covered separately in the Eligibility section, so this list carries only the documents you physically upload or send.
- Passport bio page: Colour scan valid at least 6 months beyond the intended intake start.
- Class XII marksheet and certificate: All boards accepted, originals scanned in full colour.
- Bachelor’s transcripts and degree certificate: Required for PG applicants, with year-by-year mark statements plus the consolidated transcript and a certified English translation for non-English documents.
- English test score report: IELTS TRF, TOEFL score report, PTE score card, CAEL or Duolingo, sent to TRU directly by the test provider.
- Statement of Purpose (SOP): 500 to 1,000 words for most graduate programs, addressing academic fit and career plan.
- Letters of Recommendation (LORs): Two academic or professional references for PG, on letterhead where possible.
- Resume or CV: One or two pages for PG, listing education, work, projects, and any research.
- Financial proof: Bank statements, sponsor letters, or Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) confirmation for the study permit stage.
- Program-specific supplements: Letter of Permission from home institution for MEd, cover letter and supervisor email for MSc research programs, and a scholarly statement for MN Nurse Practitioner.
Thompson Rivers University Acceptance Rate for Indian Applicants
Thompson Rivers University does not publish an official institutional acceptance rate. Third-party estimates place it at around 80 to 85 percent for qualified applicants, drawing on the access-oriented public-university admission model TRU uses across most of its programs. That figure is a general institutional estimate and specific programs run tighter.
Thompson Rivers University Acceptance Rate by Program Type
Open-enrolment programs such as the general Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science admit close to every qualified applicant, while the MBA and Master of Nursing sit in a tighter competitive band because of cohort caps and clinical placement limits. The Master of Science in Data Science and MA Human Rights and Social Justice sit in between because they need supervisor confirmation or an above-average GPA.
Thompson Rivers University Selectivity Factors for Indian Students
Applications from India are read alongside the standard institution-wide floors, with English proficiency and Class XII or Bachelor’s marks doing most of the sorting. TRU’s ranking band sits in the Times Higher Education 1001-plus range, which reflects its regional focus rather than any admission tightness.
Reality check: An access-oriented admission model means that admits most applicants who meet its stated requirements. It does not mean guaranteed admission, so applicants below the 65 percent Class XII floor or under IELTS 6.5 overall will receive a conditional offer routed through the EAP pathway rather than direct entry.
Canada Student Visa Process for Thompson Rivers University Students
Indian students admitted to Thompson Rivers University need a Canadian study permit before travelling, applied for online through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Most Indian applicants use the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which offers faster processing (typically 20 calendar days) if all conditions are met at submission. The SDS route requires proof of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 22,895 (around INR 15.92 Lakhs), a first-year tuition payment receipt, an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 overall or PTE Academic 60, and the Letter of Acceptance issued by TRU.
The general (non-SDS) route stays open to applicants who cannot meet SDS conditions, with processing times running 8 to 16 weeks. Both routes require the biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Centre in India, followed by a medical exam from an IRCC-approved panel physician. After landing in Canada, students must complete on-campus registration at TRU International within the first two weeks and enrol in the mandatory health plan billed at CAD 75 per month (around INR 5,216).
2026 update: IRCC continues the higher proof-of-funds threshold introduced in September 2025, so financial evidence must show CAD 22,895 for one student in addition to first-year tuition, with the GIC option being the fastest to verify under SDS.
Tips and Application Checklist for Thompson Rivers University
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Thompson Rivers University, blending sequencing advice with practical hand-holds for the study permit stage.
- Book IELTS 10 to 12 weeks ahead: The TRU MBA and Nursing floors of 7.0 overall usually take Indian applicants two attempts, so build in a re-test window.
- Target Fall for maximum program access: Winter and Summer intakes carry a slimmer program list, and popular options such as MEd and MA Human Rights only run in Fall.
- Aim to apply 6 months before intake: Apply by March for the September Fall intake to leave 12 to 14 weeks for study permit processing after the LOA arrives.
- Request Bachelor’s transcripts 8 weeks before the deadline: Indian universities frequently take 4 to 6 weeks to issue year-wise transcripts and a consolidated statement.
- Line up the GIC account early: Only IRCC-approved Indian banks can open the CAD 22,895 GIC for SDS, and appointment slots in metro cities book out during peak intake months.
- Use the Exceptional Student Award auto-track: Applicants with Class XII at 80 percent or above and IELTS 6.5 overall are considered automatically for the CAD 4,000 total award without a separate form.
- Choose the correct campus: Kamloops is the main campus for degree programs, while the Williams Lake campus runs a smaller trade and applied-degree list only.
- Keep two document sets ready: The application accepts scans, but the LOA release and study permit stage both need certified or attested hard copies.
Thompson Rivers University suits Indian students who want an affordable British Columbia public-university degree with clear direct-entry rules and a Fall primary intake that opens all major programs. Confirm your target program’s deadline, English floor, and application fee on the official TRU page before submitting through EducationPlannerBC iApply.

- Some of the faculty are racist so choose your professor well. Read reviews on them.
Likes
- I really like the teaching faculty, especially the computing science department. The professors are very helpful.
- I also like this one thing about my University they put a lot of focus on the student's mental health whether it be a domestic or an international student.
Dislikes
- The one thing that I dislike is that there are not many jobs on campus for international students except for the co-op positions. There are many opportunities for domestic students comparatively.
Overview
The one particular reason for choosing this University is because it has a tie-up program with a college in India in Chandigarh. Through this program, I was able to complete two years of my Canadian education in India with the same curriculum as Canada. My overall experience at this University has been amazing. I really recommend this University as there are so many things you can find in here. I chose this particular program as it was of my interest and I was able to complete the first two years in India.
Likes
- Practical knowledge valued over theoretical knowledge
- Clean and hygienic campus
- Good faculty while delivering lectures
Dislikes
- Less on-campus accommodation
- Very high competition for on-campus jobs
- Fewer placement records from the campus
Overview
I chose this university as the program schedule was what I really wanted to study; the weather is pretty good compared to other provinces. On-campus classes are more than in other colleges/universities where the study is half online.
Likes
- This Post Baccalaureate course in Supply chain management was available only at TRU and it’s located in British Columbia, an important international hub in logistics and exports. Job opportunities are comparatively higher in this province when compared to other provinces.
- The university is diverse and involves students from different parts of the world. Staff are really supportive and are open to help in whichever way possible. Qualified professors & lecturers and the university is located in a scenic city with lots of explore.
Dislikes
- University tuition fee is really expensive and comparatively fewer jobs in and around Kamloops city. When looked at housing costs, on campus is a good place to live, but again the cost is massive when compared to the amenities available.
Overview
I have completed one year of study and it has indeed been a roller coaster of an experience. There are ups and downs but in the end the focus shouldn’t divert from the goal. There may be days when you may feel lonely but it’s important to remember why you’re there. Focus on your goals, speak to family and friends, work and strive hard to achieve your dreams.

- It was one of the best universities to pursue MBA in British Columbia without a GMAT. As I decided very late to move to Canada I had not planned to take GMAT. This helped me to still pursue MBA from one of the best universities in BC
- Some professors were extremely Knowledgeable. The campus was great. Good exposure to extra curricular activities like basketball games, LEAP, etc. I made good friends, have good relationships with my professors.
Dislikes
- There were no courses that would actually prepare us students for our future jobs. So many software were not included in our courses to prepare us for the job roles in future. In a technologically advanced era, the students could benefit a lot if SQL, Tableau and Python like softwares are taught to us.
Overview
Overall experience was okay, for the fees that I paid to become an MBA graduate I had a lot of expectations regarding learning a lot of things that could actually help me get a job sooner.
Overview
I contacted CareerBrick in Delhi, and they helped me with the admission process. Gave IELTS after studying for 3-4 days from an online platform called Magoosh. The admission process was relatively easy. Got the confirmation from the university in a couple of months, and that's it. Also, I gave my GMAT too, although it isn't a prerequisite for admission at the university.

Overview
I applied with my engineering transcript and IELTS scores for admission with help of an agent from India. It took six months to know a decision from the university's side. I selected this institution because being an engineer this is the only institution that takes non-business graduates for higher studies in programs such as post-baccalaureate diplomas.
Scholarship
I received a TRU diversity scholarship in the first year which was for students with good marks. However international students do NOT receive many scholarships here. Even though I received the scholarship they didn't give it to me in the second year saying that the scholarship was given to everyone because it was some anniversary. Moreover, many students were given the same amount when it was the pandemic and the university was struggling to find more immigrants which makes sense now.
Overview
The course and papers made sense for what I wanted to pursue: Affordable course.
Scholarship
No
Overview
TRU provides options to work on and off campus. They also have a co-op program where we can gain career related work experience before graduating
Scholarship

Overview
TRU is one of the best experiences anyone can get. For an average student like me, you get more than average rating University which has a good campus and can explore a lot of things in the University from joining clubs to being part of all the activities. One of the other reasons is diversity which is difficult to find in many colleges in Canada but fortunately, TRU will give that opportunity, especially in non-business courses.
Scholarship
No, I didn't receive any scholarship.

Students applying for the M.Sc Environmental Science program of Thompson Rivers University must be graduates of a four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.3 on a scale of 4.33, in the last 60 credits.
