Thompson Rivers University offers 40+ merit-based scholarships, of which 6+ are accessible to Indian applicants at undergraduate level. TRU adds federal doctoral funding through the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships for eligible PhD candidates from India.

  • Standard UG international tuition: around CAD 22,000 (INR 14.97 Lakhs) per year
  • Tuition after a mid-tier award (Academic Excellence, CAD 2,000): CAD 20,000 (INR 13.61 Lakhs) per year
  • Tuition after an Exceptional Student Award plus a Diversity Scholarship: effective net closer to CAD 15,000 (INR 10.21 Lakhs)
  • Next application deadline: September 30, 2026, for the internal myTRU Undergraduate Awards Application (International)

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.06 as of July 2026. GPA is on a 4.33 scale at TRU; a 3.0 GPA equals about 73% in the Indian percentage system.

The Exceptional Student Award and the Academic Excellence Award are the two most common wins for Indian first-years, per data on TRU admissions. Both are stacked automatically on the admission letter, with no essay required.

Diversity Scholarships add a second tier for applicants whose home country is underrepresented on the Kamloops campus. Combining the Exceptional Student Award and a Diversity award can cut first-year tuition by CAD 6,000-9,000.

Reddit Insight: Multiple Indian first-years on r/TRU report their Exceptional Student Award of CAD 4,000 was auto-applied to the fall invoice. No separate acceptance step was needed after admission.

Thompson Rivers University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Indian PG applicants at Thompson Rivers University access funding through faculty-nominated internal awards and program-embedded fee reductions rather than a single flagship grant. The MBA, MSc Environmental Science and MEd tracks each carry distinct funding shapes.

Scholarship / AwardValue (CAD / INR)Eligibility for Indian StudentsDeadline (2026-27)
Faculty-Nominated Graduate Awards (Int’l)CAD 2,000-6,000 (INR 1.36-4.08 Lakhs)3.33 GPA in the last 30 credits; supervisor nominationTentative September 30, 2026
Graduate Research AssistantshipCAD 5,000-10,000 (INR 3.40-6.81 Lakhs) per termEnrolled in an MSc or MA thesis stream; supervisor matchRolling with supervisor
Graduate Teaching AssistantshipCAD 25 per hour, typical 10 hours per weekFull-time PG students; departmental postingRolling on TRU careers portal
TRU MBA Merit Bursary (Int’l stream)Case-by-case, up to CAD 3,000 (INR 2.04 Lakhs)MBA offer holders with GMAT 650+ or 3.5 GPATentative April 30, 2026 for Fall intake

PG funding at Thompson Rivers University sits on assistantships more than on named awards. A GRA paired with a GTA can trim MBA or MSc costs by roughly CAD 15,000 across two years, per TRU MBA data.

Faculty-nominated awards require you to secure a supervisor before applying. The window opens with the Fall term admission cycle and closes at the end of September.

Reddit Insight: Indian MSc Environmental Science students on r/TRU pair a GRA with a summer field-work stipend. That combination brought their net second-year cost below CAD 12,000, versus a CAD 22,000 sticker.

India-Specific Scholarships at Thompson Rivers University

Thompson Rivers University does not run a scholarship reserved for Indian passport holders. Indian applicants instead qualify for the Diversity Scholarships and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute grants, which behave as India-facing funding routes.

ScholarshipValue (CAD / INR)Eligibility for Indian StudentsDeadline (2026-27)
Diversity Scholarships (India-eligible slot)CAD 2,000-5,000 (INR 1.36-3.40 Lakhs)Indian citizens with GPA 3.0+ and IELTS 6.5+Automatic on admission
Shastri Student Mobility Grant (via TRU host)CAD 3,000 (INR 2.04 Lakhs) travel and settlementIndian undergrad or PG at an Indian home institutionTentative January 31, 2026 for Summer 2026 mobility
Shastri Research Student FellowshipCAD 5,000 (INR 3.40 Lakhs)Indian MPhil or PhD scholars visiting TRU labsTentative March 15, 2026

The Diversity Scholarships route is the closest thing to a dedicated India award at TRU. Kamloops runs a smaller Indian cohort than Toronto or Vancouver campuses, which keeps the underrepresentation criterion in play.

Shastri awards fund shorter research or study visits rather than full degrees. They still slot inside a TRU-hosted program and reduce out-of-pocket cost for Indian scholars in their first term.

Thompson Rivers University PhD Scholarships

Thompson Rivers University funds PhDs through the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and internal top-ups tied to the Environmental Science PhD. Environmental Science is TRU’s flagship doctoral program. Indian PhD applicants at TRU compete for the same pool as domestic peers.

ScholarshipValue (CAD / INR)Eligibility for Indian StudentsDeadline (2026-27)
Vanier Canada Graduate ScholarshipCAD 50,000 (INR 34.03 Lakhs) per year for 3 yearsIndian PhD entrants nominated by TRU; strong research and leadership recordTRU internal nomination tentative October 30, 2026
TRU PhD Entrance Award (Env. Science)CAD 5,000-10,000 (INR 3.40-6.81 Lakhs)Admitted to Environmental Science PhD; supervisor nominationTentative April 15, 2026
Doctoral Research AssistantshipCAD 15,000-20,000 (INR 10.21-13.61 Lakhs) per yearEnrolled full-time PhD; tri-agency-funded supervisorRolling with supervisor

Vanier evaluates PhD candidates on three pillars:

  • Academic excellence: transcripts, publications and prior scholarships
  • Research potential: proposal quality and supervisor endorsement
  • Leadership potential: mentoring, community and civic engagement

The Vanier CGS pays CAD 50,000 annually for three years, and Indian applicants qualify as international citizens under tri-agency rules. TRU holds a small nomination quota, so contact TRU’s grad school before September.

Doctoral Research Assistantships depend on the supervisor’s active grant. Environmental Science, Computing Science and Nursing labs at TRU tend to carry the largest pool of assistantship offers each year.

External Government Scholarships for Thompson Rivers University Applicants

Indian students admitted to Thompson Rivers University stack four external government or bilateral awards on top of the internal package. All four accept TRU as a host institution.

Thompson Rivers University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship stack an Indian undergraduate can build at Thompson Rivers University?

Ans. An Indian UG can stack the Exceptional Student Award (CAD 4,000) with a top-tier Diversity Scholarship (up to CAD 5,000). Add an on-campus job at CAD 17 per hour to push total first-year support past CAD 14,000 (INR 9.53 Lakhs). That covers about 64% of the CAD 22,000 sticker tuition.

Ques. When should I apply for TRU international scholarships as an Indian student?

Ans. Automatic UG awards apply as soon as TRU issues your offer, which usually lands between January and August. The myTRU Undergraduate Awards Application (International) closes on September 30 each year. Submit within a week of enrolling to stay safe.

Ques. Do I need to submit a separate scholarship application for the Exceptional Student Award at Thompson Rivers University?

Ans. No separate form is needed. TRU reviews your admission file against the 80% GPA threshold and adds the CAD 4,000 award to your acceptance letter. You only need a myTRU application for competitive faculty-nominated or ambassador awards.

Ques. What GPA does an Indian applicant need for the Academic Excellence Award at TRU?

Ans. You need 86% or higher in your Grade 12 board results, equivalent to a 3.7 GPA on the 4.33 scale that TRU uses. IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0 is the language floor.

Ques. Can Indian PhD applicants win the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship through TRU?

Ans. Yes. Indian PhD entrants qualify as foreign citizens under Vanier rules and can be nominated by TRU. The award pays CAD 50,000 (INR 34.03 Lakhs) annually across a three-year term. TRU’s grad school handles internal nominations by late October.

Ques. Does the Exceptional Student Award cover living costs in Kamloops?

Ans. Not fully. The CAD 4,000 award applies to tuition, while Kamloops off-campus rent averages CAD 900-1,200 per month. Pair it with a Graduate or Undergraduate Teaching Assistantship at CAD 25 per hour to cover accommodation and groceries.

  • I found off-campus accommodation, which is $800 per month for a private room. I used Facebook Marketplace to find it.

The one particular reason for choosing this University is because it has a tie-up program with a college in India in Chandigarh. Through this program, I was able to complete two years of my Canadian education in India with the same curriculum as Canada. My overall experience at this University has been amazing. I really recommend this University as there are so many things you can find in here. I chose this particular program as it was of my interest and I was able to complete the first two years in India.

I chose this university as the program schedule was what I really wanted to study; the weather is pretty good compared to other provinces. On-campus classes are more than in other colleges/universities where the study is half online.

I have completed one year of study and it has indeed been a roller coaster of an experience. There are ups and downs but in the end the focus shouldn’t divert from the goal. There may be days when you may feel lonely but it’s important to remember why you’re there. Focus on your goals, speak to family and friends, work and strive hard to achieve your dreams.

Overall experience was okay, for the fees that I paid to become an MBA graduate I had a lot of expectations regarding learning a lot of things that could actually help me get a job sooner.

I contacted CareerBrick in Delhi, and they helped me with the admission process. Gave IELTS after studying for 3-4 days from an online platform called Magoosh. The admission process was relatively easy. Got the confirmation from the university in a couple of months, and that's it. Also, I gave my GMAT too, although it isn't a prerequisite for admission at the university.

Scholarship

I received a TRU diversity scholarship in the first year which was for students with good marks. However international students do NOT receive many scholarships here. Even though I received the scholarship they didn't give it to me in the second year saying that the scholarship was given to everyone because it was some anniversary. Moreover, many students were given the same amount when it was the pandemic and the university was struggling to find more immigrants which makes sense now.

I applied with my engineering transcript and IELTS scores for admission with help of an agent from India. It took six months to know a decision from the university's side. I selected this institution because being an engineer this is the only institution that takes non-business graduates for higher studies in programs such as post-baccalaureate diplomas.

No, I didn't receive any scholarship.

TRU is one of the best experiences anyone can get. For an average student like me, you get more than average rating University which has a good campus and can explore a lot of things in the University from joining clubs to being part of all the activities. One of the other reasons is diversity which is difficult to find in many colleges in Canada but fortunately, TRU will give that opportunity, especially in non-business courses.
