AFMC PGD FAQs

Ques. Are AFMC PGD programmes open to civilian doctors or only to armed forces medical officers?

Ans. AFMC PGD programmes are primarily designed for in-service armed forces medical personnel, but civilian doctors may also be eligible under specific provisions depending on the seat matrix and category for a given session. Civilian candidates should refer to the official AFMC PGD admission notification for that year to confirm whether civilian seats are available for the specialisation they are interested in, as the seat allocation policy can vary year to year.

Ques. Are AFMC PGD degrees recognised by the National Medical Commission for specialist registration?

Ans. AFMC is a Deemed University under the Ministry of Defence and is recognised by the University Grants Commission. PGD degrees from NMC-recognised institutions qualify graduates for postgraduate specialist registration with the state medical council. Candidates should verify the NMC recognition status of the specific PGD specialisation they intend to pursue at AFMC before joining, as recognition can vary by specialisation and programme vintage.

Ques. How does AFMC PGD admission differ from the NEET-PG and state counselling route at government medical colleges?

Ans. AFMC operates under the Ministry of Defence and runs its own PGD admissions through a credential and exam-based evaluation rather than through the central NEET-PG and state medical counselling system. AFMC does not participate in the MCC PG counselling. Candidates apply directly through the AFMC admissions portal, appear for evaluation in May 2026, and are selected on institutional merit criteria. This is a significant difference from the NEET-PG route taken by government and private medical college PGD admissions across India.

Ques. Can an AFMC PGD holder later upgrade to an MD or MS in the same specialisation?

Ans. PGD holders from NMC-recognised institutions can pursue MD or MS in the same specialisation; some universities credit the PGD period partially toward the MD requirement. However, NEET-PG eligibility for MD/MS is open to MBBS graduates regardless of whether they hold a PGD, so an AFMC PGD holder qualifies to appear in NEET-PG again for MD/MS. The specific credit transfer policy for AFMC PGD holders would depend on the receiving university’s regulations.

Ques. What additional charges apply for AFMC PGD beyond the tuition fee?

Ans. The ₹2,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 programme fee covers tuition only. Hostel, mess, uniforms, practical and lab materials, and examination fees are charged separately as per AFMC institutional norms. Since AFMC is a residential military campus, all residential charges follow the institutional rate schedule published at the time of admission. Candidates should obtain the full fee schedule from the AFMC admissions notification before finalising their decision.
