Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) was established in 1998 by a merchant navy engineer in Chennai. The institute believes that education had played a vital role in the success of an individual. HIMT’s achievement of its mission is guided by a Governing Council, which prioritizes the institute’s goals. The institute offers full-time courses in the field of nautical science and marine engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The HIMT admissions are based on the merit marks scored by a candidate in 10+2.
HIMT is affiliated to Indian Maritime University with the main mission of the institute is to make the best marines in the world who will protect and respect the global environment and are strong enough to face all global aspects.
HIMT facilities on the campus consist of classrooms, laboratories, library, practical training facilities are provided by way of a large well-equipped workshop, engineering infrastructure, simulator, mock-ups and above-all ship in campus, replica to a Ships Engine room for practical training.

The four-year B.Tech course in Marine Engineering leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of competency. After six months of sea service, a cadet become a Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval Ships anywhere in the world.
A candidate should be passed in 10+2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics group and at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard.
Age should be 17 to 25 years as on 31st of July.
The one year Pre Sea Training course for Mechanical Engineering Graduates (GME) is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate to Competency.
BE Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture degree with minimum 50% marks in the final year. A candidate should have scored at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th std, or degree course.
The two years Pre Sea training course for Diploma Holders (DME) is a course leading to a Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency.
Diploma Holder in Mechanical/ Marine/ Naval Architecture/ Electrical/ Electrical and Electronics Engineering with a minimum of 50% in English at 10th or 12th std, or degree course.
Note: For admissions in GME and DME, a candidate must be maximum 28 years of age as on 1st of March or 1st of September.
The 3-year B.Sc Nautical Science course leading to Second Mate’s Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency. After 12 months of Sea Service, enabling the cadets to become Navigating officers on board Merchant Navy Ships worldwide.
The 1 year DNS course leading to B.Sc Nautical Science and also leading to 2nd Mates Foreign going Certificate of competency. After 18 months of sea service, a cadet becomes Navigating officers on board Merchant Naval Ships.
Pass in 10+2 or equivalent with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry with a PCM aggregate of not less than 55% OR Physics as individual subject in one of the year, B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year. OR BE/ B.Tech degree from IIT or from a college recognized by AICTE approved with not less than 50% marks.
Should have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as s subject, either 10th 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/University.
Age should be 75 to 25 years on 31st July.
Note: For admissions in B.Sc and DNS a candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision in each eye to be 6/6, and with no color blindness.
