SPIT B.Tech FAQs

Ques. How does SPIT’s autonomous status change the B.Tech experience compared to standard Mumbai University colleges?

Ans. SPIT designs its own syllabus, conducts its own exams, and updates curriculum faster than non-autonomous Mumbai University colleges. Topics like AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity are integrated ahead of the standard university syllabus. Graduates receive a degree under Mumbai University affiliation, but the academic experience is more industry-current. This autonomy is a key reason top tech recruiters consistently prefer SPIT graduates over many other Mumbai colleges.

Ques. How much do EBC and TFWS fee waivers actually reduce annual fees at SPIT?

Ans. For EBC families with income below INR 8 lakhs, the MahaDBT scheme reimburses the tuition component, dropping the annual fee from INR 2,12,000 to around INR 1,13,000 for boys and INR 27,690 for girls. SC and ST students may pay under INR 3,000 per year after reimbursement. TFWS provides a full tuition waiver for eligible CAP-allotted students. Applications go through the MahaDBT portal immediately after joining.

Ques. How competitive is SPIT’s MHT-CET cutoff for Computer Engineering compared to DJSCE and VJTI?

Ans. SPIT Computer Engineering closed at around 99.6 to 99.8 percentile for the Open category in 2025. VJTI closes higher (above 99.9 for CSE government seats) because of its dramatically lower fee. DJSCE sits slightly below SPIT at 98.56 to 99.61 percentile. The gap is narrow and shifts each year based on applicant pool strength and overall MHT-CET score distribution.

Ques. Can students from outside Maharashtra apply to SPIT B.Tech through JEE Main?

Ans. Yes, a limited number of All India Quota seats at SPIT are filled via JEE Main ranks through Maharashtra’s CAP process. Most seats go to Maharashtra state candidates via MHT-CET. Out-of-state applicants should download the latest CAP information brochure from cetcell.mahacet.org to check the exact seat matrix and category-wise qualifying criteria before registering.

Ques. Does SPIT have hostel accommodation for B.Tech students?

Ans. SPIT does not have an on-campus hostel. The college is in Andheri West, and most students arrange paying guest accommodation or shared apartments in nearby Andheri, Santacruz, or Jogeshwari. Monthly rents typically range from INR 8,000 to INR 18,000 for a shared room. Mumbai’s suburban railway and metro make commuting manageable from these localities.

Ques. Is a B.Tech from SPIT strong enough to crack GATE for IIT M.Tech admissions?

Ans. Yes. SPIT’s autonomous curriculum covers core subjects in depth, which aligns well with GATE preparation. Students who focus on data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and computer networks from second year onward consistently find SPIT’s academic rigour an advantage. Several SPIT graduates have secured IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras M.Tech seats through GATE in recent years.
