Length and Height are important parameters that are used to describe the three dimensional geometric shapes. Length describes how long the shape is while Height indicates how tall a shape is. Length is horizontal measurement in a plane that is measured along the X-axis whereas Height is the vertical measurement that is measured along the Y-axis.

What is Length?

Length is the longest dimension of an object. It is the horizontal extension of an object which is measured along X – axis on a graph. The measurement of the distance from one point to another point is called length. It represents the degree of extension between two points on the horizontal plane. The length refers to the size of an object, irrespective of its dimensions.

Base unit for length in SI system of units is “meter”. All other units such as millimeter, centimeter, kilometer, inches, miles etc are derived from its base unit.

What is Height?

Height is also a measure of distance but of vertical distance of the object. It measures the vertical distance from the lowest point to the top. In geometry, height of an object is usually labeled as an altitude. It is measured along Y-axis of an object within the coordinate geometry. Height tells us how tall someone or something is. It is usually measured in centimeters, inches, feet, meter etc.

Key differences between length and height are as follows:

Comparison Length Height
Definition Length is the measurement of an entity from one point to another. Height is the measurement of an entity from the top to bottom.
Position Horizontal Vertical
Use It determines how long the object is. It determines how high the object takes base as a reference.
Axis of measurement Length is measured on the X- axis. Height is measured on Y-axis.
Dimension Length is the longest dimension of an object. Height is the dimension that would be up in any orientation.
Type of objects It can be one, two or three dimensional objects. It is mostly measured for three-dimensional objects.
Example Line, rectangle, square, cube, etc. Cube, cylinder, etc.

Similarities between length and height

  • Length and height both use same units for measurement.
  • Length and height both are used to measure the distance.
  • Units used for measuring the length and height are inch, feet, yard and meter.

Things to Remember

  • Length is considered to be a property of time alongside distance because a particular amount of time tends to have a length.
  • Length means the most extended dimension of a fixed object but not in every case as sometimes it depends on the position of objects.
  • SI unit has described ‘meter’ as the standard unit accepted all over to measure length and height or any kind of distance.
  • Difference between length and width is that length is the longest side of the object while width is the shortest site.
  • Height of a person is equal to the span of stretched out arms on the sides.
  • While measuring the height, if the vertical position is attached to earth, then altitude (height above the sea level) is called elevation.
  • In three-dimensional space, height is measured along the vertical Z-axis, describing a distance above the x-y plane.
  • In aviation technology, the altitude of an airplane is measured from sea level, while its height is measured from ground level.

Sample Questions

Ques. What is length and what does it measure? (1 Mark)

Ans. Length is measurement of a one dimensional object from one given point to another point. It tells us how long a particular object is. It is used to measure the distance and time.

Ques. What is the difference between length and width? (1 Mark)

Ans. Most common difference between the length and width is that the length is the longest side of the object while width is the shortest side.

Ques. What is the formula for volume of cuboids? (1 Mark)

Ans. the formula for volume of cuboids is length × width × height.

Ques. Length and height are which type of measurements? (1 Mark)

Ans. Length is the horizontal measurement and height is the vertical measurement.

Ques. What is the example of length? (1 Mark)

Ans. By definition, length is how long something is or the amount of time it takes up. An example of length is two hours of a movie or 10 inches.

Ques. While measuring the box, what comes first in the order of length, width or height? (1 Mark)

Ans. for the box, length is always the longest side so it comes first in the order. The next dimension is width as it is always shorter than length.

Ques. Are length and height the same? Is length always the longest? (2 Marks)

Ans. Although length and height share few similarities, they are not the same. Length describes how long the object is while height determines the tallness of the object. The length is considered as the longest dimension of an object and tells us how long that object is. Therefore length is always the longest.

Ques. What is height and what does it measure? How is the measurement done? (2 marks)

Ans. The height is a measurement of a particular object from the top to its bottom. It tells us how tall the object is. It is the measure of distance in a vertical manner. The height of an object is measured in vertical manner on the Y axis on the X-y plane.

Ques. What are the units of measuring length and height? (2 marks)

Ans. Length: The standard unit or the base unit of length is ‘meter’. Apart from that length is measured in millimeters, kilometers, feet, inches, miles, etc.

Height: As the difference between length and height is precise it shares the same units of measurement as length.

Ques. Distinguish between length and height. (3 Marks)

Ans.

Length Height
Length is a measurement of object from one point to another. Height is a measurement of object from top to bottom.
It measures horizontally. It measures vertically.
It is denoted on X-axis. It is denoted on Y-axis.
It's mostly used to measure the one dimensional object. It is used for one, two and three dimensional objects.
Example: line, square, rectangle Example: cube, cylinder
