Gout is a condition in which monosodium urate crystals are formed in a joint, causing it to become red, hot, painful, and swollen in a short amount of time. The underlying cause of this is hyperuricemia, or too much uric acid in the blood, which causes sharp needle-like crystals to develop in regions with sluggish blood flow, such as the joints and renal tubules. If a human has recurrent Gout Attacks over time, the joint tissue might be destroyed, resulting in arthritis.

What is Gout?

Gout is an arthritic joint condition caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Purines, which are components of genetic material present both inside our cells and in some of the food we eat, are processed by our liver. When purines are broken down by our liver, uric acid is generated as a waste product.

Our body excretes this waste through our kidneys, which then filter it out of our bloodstream. When the liver generates too much uric acid or the kidneys fail to eliminate the appropriate amount of uric acid from the body, an excess amount of uric acid accumulates in the blood, causing hyperuricemia. This inturn results in a considerably larger quantity of uric acid in our body's fluids. When the concentration of uric acid is excessively high due to any of these factors; it will not be able to dissolve, and this excess uric acid will begin to form needle-like crystals inside our joints, which is most often observed in the big toe. As a result of the development of uric acid crystals, an inflammatory reaction occurs. To counteract this, our immune system's white blood cells will assault the uric acid crystal, causing joint discomfort and inflammation.

This is known as an acute gout attack, and if the illness is not treated, the uric acid levels may rise, resulting in lumpy uric acid deposits around our joint known as Tophus. This, in turn, causes further joint discomfort and, in some cases, deformity.

Causes and Risk Factor

Gout develops when urate crystals build up in our joints, producing inflammation and excruciating pain. When our body breaks down purines, which are chemicals present naturally in our body, uric acid is produced.

Purines can also be present in some meals, such as red meat and organ meats like liver. Anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, trout, and tuna are examples of purine-rich seafood. Higher amounts of uric acid are promoted by alcoholic beverages, particularly beer, and drinks sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose).

Uric acid dissolves in our blood and travels via our kidneys into our urine in normal circumstances. However, there are instances when our bodies generate too much uric acid or our kidneys discharge too little. 

Risk Factors

If we have excessive quantities of uric acid in our bodies, we are more prone to get gout. The following factors contribute to a rise in uric acid levels in human bodies:

  1. Diet- A diet high in red meat and seafood, as well as beverages sweetened with fruit sugar (fructose), raises uric acid levels, putting us at risk for gout. Gout is also exacerbated by alcohol intake, particularly beer.
  2. Weight-if you're overweight, your body creates more uric acid, and your kidneys have a harder difficulty removing it.
  3. Medical problems- Certain disorders and circumstances make us more susceptible to gout. Untreated high blood pressure and chronic illnesses including diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and heart and kidney disease are among them.
  4. Medication- Low-dose aspirin and certain hypertension medicines, such as thiazide diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and beta blockers, might raise uric acid levels. Anti-rejection medications administered for patients who have had an organ transplant might also cause problems.
  5. Gout in the family- If other members of our family have had gout, you're more likely to get it as well.
  • Age and Sex- Gout is more common in males than in women as uric acid levels in women are lower. Men tend to acquire gout symptoms earlier in life, usually between the ages of 30 and 50, whereas women often develop symptoms after menopause.
  • Recent surgery or a traumatic event- A gout episode can occasionally be triggered by recent surgery or trauma. Getting vaccinated can cause gout flare-ups in certain people.

Symptoms

Sleep problems, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and weight gain are among adverse effects of systemic steroids. These medications are used not just to treat acute inflammation, but also to prevent it from happening again, a process known as prophylaxis.
