Magnesium Nitride Formula makes an inorganic compound, which is also known as Trimagnesium Dinitride formula or Trimagnesium Nitrogen formula. Magnesium nitride is made up of Magnesium and Nitrogen, which consist of three atoms of Magnesium and two atoms of Nitrogen. Thus, the chemical formula of Magnesium Nitride sums up to, Mg3N2. At room temperature and pressure, the chemical compound occurs as a greenish to yellow powder. Moreover, it dissolves in acid, is slightly soluble in ether and ethanol, and can be prepared by passing dry nitrogen on heated magnesium. Apart from this, this chemical compound can also be prepared by passing ammonia on heated magnesium. When Magnesium Nitride is thermally Thermal decomposed, it generates nitrogen and magnesium gas.

The Chemical formula of magnesium nitride is -
Mg3N2
It contains Magnesium as (Mg2+) and nitrate as (NO3–) ions. By the elaboration of the formula, it becomes clear that Magnesium Nitride holds ions in its chemical formula, and so it is an ionic compound.
By the criss-cross method, the chemical formula of magnesium nitride can be derived. By crisscrossing method, the valencies of both the elements get interchanged with them taking place in the subscript of the element. The valency of magnesium is two (2) and the valency of nitride is three (-3). So, by the criss-cross method, the chemical formula of magnesium nitride becomes – Mg3N2.
