Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 1 Rational Numbers – Important Topics

A rational number can be thought of as a ratio of two numbers in the form p/q where 'q' is not equal to zero and both 'p' and 'q' are integers (could be both negative or positive).

Any number that is expressed in the form of a fraction is rational. Other than that it can be a whole number, a number with decimal which can further be expressed as a fraction, a natural number, or any integer

Types of Rational Numbers:

  • Positive rational numbers: The numerator and the denominator, both are positive numbers or negative numbers, e.g., ¾, 5/7, 8/9, etc.
  • Negative rational numbers: At least one of the two, the numerator, or the denominator is negative, e.g., - ½, -3/4, etc.

Properties of Rational Numbers:

  • They are expressed in fractions and can be converted into decimal forms.
  • They can be greater than or less than 0.
  • They undergo all kinds of arithmetic operations.
